Ever thought to yourself that a meme could become so popular - or in this case infamous - to the point where it's considered a 'hate symbol'? Welp, that's the case with this frog down the riverbank. Over the course of last week, the popular meme was officially declared a hate symbol by the Anti-Defamation League (AFL) because of Internet users twisting it into anti-Sometic contexts.

In a statement made by the Anti-Defamation League, "Images of a frog, variously portrayed with a Hitler-like moustache, wearing a yarmulke or a Klan hood, have proliferated in recent weeks in hateful messages aimed at Jewish and other users on Twitter." The CEO of the non-governmental organization Jonathan Greenblatt, went on to say "Once again, racists and haters have taken a popular Internet meme and twisted it for their own purposes of spreading bigotry and harassing users."

'Pepe the Frog' was originally a comic book character by Matt Furie in the series Boy's Club beginning in 2005. Over the last decade, the frog became synonymous with being the "sad frog meme," often captioned with phrases such as "feels good man" or "feels bad man." Generally, the meme is often used to express some kind of emotion with the meme covering a wide variety of them due to the expanse creativity of the Internet.
My stand point is that it's all based on context with 'Pepe the Frog.' Like with anything, it's really all just a matter of how the subject matter is being used and whether or not it's appropriate. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't. What about you guys? What do you think about the ADL claiming 'Pepe the Frog' as a hate symbol? Do you use the popular internet meme? Would this ruling change how you feel about using it? Comment below as I'd love to hear and discuss with you what you have to say about this topic!
