So, apparently there was a lot of info-dump for X/Y recently. I want to take this time to go over each of them and my thoughts on them, but to summarize, none really got me excited me about the games, some of them disappointed me, and one really creeped me out. And the major burning questions that remain unanswered.
*"Fairy"-type. Really? That's the best name they could come up with? I mean, come on, if you're going to create a new type, give it a cool name, like the Magnesium Phosphate-type or the Tetrafluoroethane-type.
*October 12 release date. Fine with me, as it's still plenty of time before my birthday.
*Pokemon-amie. Otherwise known as a virtual way to "touch" your Pokemon. Sick and creepy. When I first heard about this, naturally the first thing that came to mind was To Catch A Predator.
I can only imagine this feature was created by someone with a really weird fetish. Needless to say I will not be engaging in this sort of questionable behavior.
*I really hope riding Pokemon is optional. It's not something I would do willingly. This is what gas-guzzling, V-8 powered behemoths are for, folks!
*Sky Battles: No opinion, except how would these work if you don't have a capable Pokemon in your party?
*Horde/5 vs. 1 battles: Two observations. (1) Seems completely unfair unless the enemy Pokemon are several levels below your own, and (2) because it's unfair, the evil team had better utilize this battle style when they battle you.
*Multiple rivals - nothing wrong with that idea in and of itself, but when your character and all of them are sitting together at a table, that seems to suggest that y'all are buddies. Houston, we now have a problem. I've said this preceding every Pokemon game release as of late, but I WANT TO SEE AN EVIL, SADISTIC RIVAL FOR ONCE! No more "buddy" rivals - they turn out to be spineless pushovers every time. This whole "friendly rival" thing is like a virus that's infecting every Pokemon game, and there's no attempt to even try to vaccinate this problem. I hope (but I'm not expecting) that at least one of them goes crazy and turns evil.
*New Pokemon: All are rather meh. I'm probably going to use a team composed mostly of old Pokemon anyway.
*Default character names: I'm going to name my character either "Lisa" or "Ashley" anyway, so that is a moot point.
Well, despite the disturbing Pokemon touching simulator (which I hope is completely optional) and the fact that the rival situation appears to be "the same old, same old, only multiplied in quantity," I'm still somewhat excited about these games (although if it wasn't for an attractive female progatonist, I doubt I'd be interested). Nothing announced tipped the scales in favor of X/Y, but nothing knocked it off my "to buy" list either.
But two questions I still have:
1) What do the final evos of the starters look like? As those forms, not their first stage forms, are ultimately going to decide which one to choose, and whether or not they get fired from my team later on.
2) Cat Pokemon: Which ones will be included, and will they be version exclusive? The presence of cat Pokemon in the wild will ultimately determine whether it is X or Y that I buy.
