Think of a random word

  • Think of a random word.

    I thought of "mosquito".

I wonder, what are the thought processes involved in coming up with a random number or word. It can't be truly random - I'd watched an old episode of Family Guy that used the word "mosquito" a few times in one of the scenes, which was the thing that prompted me to think of mosquito.

So how does the brain drag a memory up for this "random" word? What processes does it go through to choose this word? What makes a word more likely to be chosen by this process? How recent it appeared? Its significance to your current emotional state?

I'm no expert on neuroscience, and I welcome anyone who is to explain this to me.

  • It's all repetition, I believe. If that word keeps popping in front of you, that word will stick in your brain for some time. D:

  • Funny, all the bird-related words that come from that first one. I suppose the brain picks up on those and formulates a response accordingly.

My word was 'abdicate'. Probably because I've been talking a lot lately about how awesome of a word it is.

  • We can't think of an entirely random word. We're not computers, you know. Some little thought in our minds triggers us to think of that particular word. Whatever we are thinking of at the time will most likely be the thought that drags up this "random" word. It isn't completely random, actually. For example, you were probably sifting through your memories for a second to select a word. It isn't random, because it appeared when you were thinking of a word to be random.

  • Exactly my point, Samus. What I'd really like to know is the psychological process, in layman's terms if possible, for creating a "random" word. :3

Since I had a hint of Shakespearean touch in my life today, I thought of one word.
