  • Stupid question, but where is Lapras? I looked at a guide that said it was at M.Falls on monday (Today at the time of this post) and i got a call saying its in the main room. But i'm not getting it. Is it a random encounter? Is it a visible pokemon on the map like Snorlax? Any help would be great.

It is visible on the map, but it's in a closed-off location that requires you to travel through the cave and take a door that leads back out into the main room. You also need the Waterfall HM.

If it's still not showing up on the map, it may be a result of the internal day being wrong. I had this issue when playing on my PSP, even if the system date/clock is right, it is off by a weekday in the game. However, I put extra code in the game's script for the clock so it will tell you what day it is in-game. If it's anything but Monday, Lapras will not appear on the map. Also do you have at least 120 Pokémon captured in your National Dex?

The PokéDex thing is weird, I've not had that problem when I tested it. I left the PokéDex data structure exactly the same as the normal game, from what I understand the it might have switched PokéDex modes automatically and what you are seeing are the National Dex numbers for Lapras and Ditto. You can switch it back in the menu, I think you have to press either Select or Start while viewing the Dex to see the options for it.

The PokeDex switching on its own was my initial guess, as I never gotten a Lapras or a Ditto yet (I read your PDF file for Pokemon Locations about National Dex mons, and Ditto is only obtainable post E4) IIRC my PokeDex also switched into National Mode color, but still displayed Treecko as the start of the list (indicating its a Hoenn Dex) instead of Bulbasaur (I've already encountered a Bulbasaur while entering Pokemon Contest in Lilycove.) I also thought maybe its because I skipped some trainers in gyms (like Roxanne's and Norman's gyms) and in routes where one could stay away from their sight. I also caught pokemons as I encountered them, without them being in the Dex yet (result of skipping some trainer battles) so I'm wondering whether that contributed to the problem of the missing Baltoy & Claydol entry (Since they were still missing in the Dex post E4.)

Unfortunately, at that time I did not do the Select to switch option to attempt to "fix" it. Instead, after E4 I just started a New Game and did things differently (Changed Starters, Battled every single trainer to get the Pokemon to register in the Dex.) I also opted out catching Foreign Pokemon until I get my National Dex. So far things are running smoothly and I haven't had problems with the PokeDex, except for the "glitchy" Dex entry when catching pokemon the first time, as others have already reported.

About the fishing system, yeah one of the things I've wanted to do was change it to the simpler one from the other games. I tried this a long time ago but ended up running into the problem described in this thread here: https://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=410590
I have no idea if it's been fixed now. EDIT: Actually, I did a little more reading into the thread and Struedelmuffin says it works if implemented properly, maybe something else I was testing at the time was causing problems. I'll definitely be trying again, this would be a very nice feature.

I find this rather funny, still if implementing a minor feature might/will complicate major things in game then I understand why it has to be left out. I guess I could put up with the pains of fishing rather than have a lifetime supply of Tauros out of water. I love Feebas too much to sacrifice it for some minor inconvenience lol

Also thank you for the kind words! I went into making this with the intention of turning it more into the game I really wanted it to be, and shared it because I knew others out there would have wanted it.

You're welcome! IMO it looks aesthetically pleasing too (esp the Pokemon Party and the Fly Map screen) One thing I disliked about some rom hacks is when people incorporate FR/LG tiles & colors to R/S/E games. It looks too Gen2-ish and out of place. I love Emerald since it has a unique look and feel out of all the GBA Pokemon games, and I want to thank you for further improving it.

The Legendary Pokemon catching events I found exciting too (getting Tickets in game) since it makes post game worthwhile other than mindlessly breeding and grinding for Battle Frontier.

Also, I forgot to thank you for the DNC PokeNav feature and Repel System (Finally! Some peace and quiet!)

P.S. I forgot to to ask this before, but I noticed Mom doesn't give the Amulet Coin anymore after you battle Norman? Was this intentional or was it put somewhere else in game? Thank you!

  • Definitely agree with you about mixing tiles between the two sets of games, heck I even tried it once and I really wasn't liking where it was going.

I think the Contests don't update entries in the Dex, not sure though. The data for that is probably only in FR/LG, as I've tried replicating the 'show image of Pokémon' function and it wouldn't update it. However, the contests use a certain set of code I don't know how to edit (a command called "special 0x12E"), which may or may not include updating Dex entries. As for the rest of what is happening with your save file, unfortunately no possible cause is clear to me.

P.S. I forgot to to ask this before, but I noticed Mom doesn't give the Amulet Coin anymore after you battle Norman? Was this intentional or was it put somewhere else in game? Thank you!

Now that is definitely strange and shouldn't be happening. Just now I double checked the code for both Norman's after-battle script and Mom's script, everything seems to be lining up properly. Mom's script is unchanged from the original and all references to the flags in Norman's script are still accounted for. The only explanation I can come up with is that she may have already given you the Amulet Coin at some point, you may want to check all held items just in case. The script deals with "flag 0x85", which is only used for checking if you got the Amulet Coin from her or not. The only other flags check for the Balance Badge and PokéNav, which still use the original flags.

I just finished today the New Game i created, and I decided to test out the contest theory, I can confirm it does record it. The start of my Pokedex before I entered the contest was Weedle (from in game trade in Rustboro) then after I entered a contest and encountered a participant Bulbasaur, my Pokedex was updated as well.

OMG haha, the only times I was ever in Littleroot was when I was getting my starter, and the waking up on bed post E4. I only remember the Amulet Coin from the vanilla Emerald since I always get it for Meowth when I finally get to go in BF. I replayed the games twice now, did things differently and I'm sure I never got it from Mom. I also tested out re-battling Norman post E4, see if Mom will give me the item but she only gives me infinite dialogue of "You look a little tired. You should rest a bit." I don't know what's her problem, I just want my item lol

Anyway I want to thank you still answering the questions and stuff :D

    No problem!

I did some more testing and for me at least, the script is still working as long as flag 0x85 hasn't been set. Mom's script is definitely the same as in the normal game, did a file compare to be sure. Now I'm wondering if the Norman battle went as normal, since I did change parts of that script. Did you still get TM42 from him, and was his dialogue non-glitchy?

One way to check if flag 0x85 was already set is to load your save file into PKHeX, go to 'SAV tab > Event Flags > Research > Check Status'. Then type or scroll to flag 133 (which is 85 in hexadecimal) and if a check mark appears in the box on the right then the flag has been set, and if not then you should still be able to get the Amulet Coin (in which case I don't know why it won't give it to you). Otherwise, the flag has already somehow been set.

Yes. I had 180ish when I went for lapras. And i didn't know about the clock, so I just checked it. And in game, its Wednesday, but here in reality land, as of this comment, its Thursday. So the in game clock is a day behind. That's probably why it didn't show up for me. I was searching for it on a Saturday by the games time standards. And yeah, I'm playing it on my PSP Street with TempGBA. Not sure if there's anyway to fix it, but oh well. At least now I know and can work around it.

I'm certain it's a bug with TempGBA (that's also the same emulator I use!), which is a shame since it otherwise seems to be the best GBA emulator for PSP. One way to get around it of course is to change the PSP's system time but then it makes everything else have the wrong date. I'd make a patch specifically for dealing that emulator but I have absolutely no idea what code to change.

Nope, the Norman battle was normal as I remember it (I got the TM, and Wally's Dad interrupted us after battle to give me the HM Surf.)

I kind of want to smack myself for even asking the Mom question in the first place, as now I figured out where the Amulet Coin was (I found it in my Item PC, not in the Pokemons in the Storage.) I remember now after battling Norman, I went home to Littleroot to put my PokeNav in DNC in Birch's Lab and dropped by at home to decorate my room with that free starter plushie one gets from the Game Corner in Mauville, so at some point at talked with Mom and had gotten the item. I forgot that out of habit, I stow away unwanted items in PC to keep my bag free of clutter and to avoid accidentally selling things.

Tbh I don't know much about PKHeX since I never really messed with it, I yet to read up all about it and possibly try it soon (I don't have a working laptop rn and I understand its not possible to do it in mobile atm.) Thank you for the advice and I'll be sure to use it to check my save files in the future in case I run into problems :D

Whew, I'm glad you were able to get it, especially because I ran out of ideas on why it could be missing xD

if you are going to use PKHeX theres one thing to take note of for ROM hacks, where the program will label some Pokémon as "invalid". It's totally normal, it's basically a result of the encounter conditions not being the exact same as the original game.

Big fan of the rom. And pardon my likely ignorance, as I have no EXP with rom hacking, but I would like to make a suggestion for a "next step" to it, so to speak.

Considering we got Gen 3 remakes of the get 1 games, and people have hacked Johto into the Gen 3 style as well, I would personally find it very interesting if you/someone could add other regions to the game. I'm aware some people have remade gen 2 with gen 3 updates, along with the Orange Islands from the anime, and seeing all of that in one big rom hack would be quite amazing, to me at least.

Again, no EXP with rom hacking, so I'm not sure if its even possible, but considering how well this came out, I think it would be interesting to see the game/rom expanded upon to be even bigger.

I hope this isnt to bold of me to suggest. And either way, thanks for reading my comment if you do see this. Haha

No problem! I do like your suggestion there, and ideally I'd do exactly that but that's where there is indeed a problem: As far as directly editing the ROM goes, it's been a solo project; as it makes troubleshooting bugs/glitches way more efficient. Unfortunately doing it alone makes development really slow for an inconsistent content creator like me. If I tried adding every Region it would take decades at the rate I've been going. By the time I finish it, Gen-3 hacks might not even be a thing anymore and we'd be on Mars. xD If I could make a living off of this as a job on the other hand, that would change considerably.

Regardless of that, I still have plans to add more areas and Trainers into the game, and where possible will give them more elements from the previous generations. Making an extended-Dex version is still planned as well. Due to the FF-byte modification I made, there's definitely room for a lot of things even without expanding the ROM past 16MB.

Ah I see. Well either way, I do appreciate what you have created so far. One of the best QoL rom hacks out there.

If i can make a suggestion for things to be added to Hoenn though. I would like to see NPCs who have competitive teams. Kinda like what Lets Go did.
And as a side not, the ability to buy PokeBlocks. Feebas is way more annoying to evolve than I remember, and mixing with the NPCs is a crap shoot most of the time.

These are just minor suggestions though.

Thank you for the suggestions! Also it really makes me happy to see positive feedback on this. When I first released it I never thought it would gain this much traction, especially with the other great ROM hacks out there.

I could definitely tweak some of the NPCs' teams, mainly the ones who have custom movesets (most of the important Trainers) and give any new NPCs the similar tweaks.

As for Feebas, yeah that's been bugging me for a while and I've been trying to come up with solutions for it. One I'm realizing is that I could make it so that the Blend Master will show up much more often and at set times. He definitely gives the best PokéBlocks (best in single-player at least). This should solve the evolution problem, but the real tough part is making Feebas easier to find in the first place without adding it to the main encounter table. For now, all I have is the included link to the Feebas Finder, which outright tells you which tiles it's on and ruins the fun (or what little fun there was). Also wondering how plausible it could be to make a special Item that helps you locate the Feebas tiles (sort of like a hotter vs. colder minigame). Making a PokéBlock store sounds cool, though because of their data structure it would be impractical to make a shop out of it; at least without the disassembly (which I have little experience with).

Well most roms seems to be "original" games. So the reason that this got so much traction is because its good to see a game from peoples childhoods, as good as it can be without the multiple games feature that pokemon does (Not too fond of that, personally.) Emerald was my first game, and it bugged the hell out of me that it was basically unfinished because of the general pokemon game structure/

As for the Feabas part? Best i can say is make it like ORAS, where Feebas was only available under the bridge by the weather center at a certain time of day. Idk about the Pokeblocks though. Best i could suggest is just make the highest quality ones available to buy, but i'm sure i'm over simplifying. Either that, or make Feebas evolve with a stone of some kind. It is a trade pokemon in later games, so idk. Maybe that?

As a side note, is there a move tutor for Frenzy plant/Blast burn/Hydro Cannon? In the original gen 3 games, those were only avalable in the Gen 1 remakes.

    Hi SkyVortex,
    Dude, this looks legit!!
As soon as I complete the hack I'm currently playing, I'm giving this one a go fer sure! I really like that you kept as true to the original as possible without completely redesigning the core gameplay. The additional events you've mentioned sound like a real treat, because honestly those are amongst my favourite aspects of the earlier gens. I'm super stoked to try it.

You make a solid point there about the popularity; it looks like it's filled an important niche, where other ROM hacks tend to change a whole lot of things. I'd also describe Emerald the same way as you do, it felt like an amazing but still unfinished game when I played it. Kind of like 'Future Kanto' in GSC, it's mind-blowing that it was included, though it was unfortunately a bit empty. Heard it was down to limitations in cartridge space back then. Crystal was a particularly great game though, that's where I started and Emerald is pretty much where it ended, for now at least.

Great idea about Feebas, it would actually be the perfect solution here. Only problems I might run into when implementing this is that I'll have to somehow tie a clock-checking script into the Fishing Rod script and also make it dependent on precise location. Granted, this is way harder than it sounds unless I spend some time learning how to use the Emerald Disassembly. Regardless, I will go for it anyway and see how far it gets, even if I have to make some other modifications to get it working.

As a side note, is there a move tutor for Frenzy plant/Blast burn/Hydro Cannon? In the original gen 3 games, those were only avalable in the Gen 1 remakes.

There's no move tutor for the FP/BB/HC in CosmicEmerald right now, but now that you mention it this would be a great feature to have. I'll be adding this one too for sure.

Yeah, the events from the older games were actually a huge part of my inspiration for doing this. That and having more areas to explore throughout the game really helps, as well as having references to the previous Gens. Since Emerald was the last of the mainstream games I completed, it was sort of like a grand finale. It was still missing quite a lot of things that would have made it more fun (as mentioned above), so I decided to try and fix that. I hope you enjoy it.

There's no move tutor for the FP/BB/HC in CosmicEmerald right now, but now that you mention it this would be a great feature to have. I'll be adding this one too for sure.

If you are going to add some features, id like to request that secret bases be used in game. Seeing as its impossible to do it with other players, i think that NPC players would be best. Maybe for competitive teams.

Also, since the best way to grind EXP in Emerald was with the secret bases that would be filled with Blissies (Like what ORAS did), i would appreciate that being added. Haha

Yeah, I bet I can do the Secret Base thing. If so then I'll make it as another separate patch in case it causes issues for anyone with those bases active already. Also will have to consider that some Bases might be some people's favorite and adding this feature might ruin it for them. Due to that I'll have to figure out which ones are the least popular.

Some time ago I was attempting to come up with some ideas for custom OC Trainers that show up on different days in different Secret Bases. Kind of like the 'Day of the Week' item-givers in GSC, except you battle them. If you guys want me to add one with all Blissey, I'd definitely have to make this into a post-game thing otherwise it'd be way too broken. Maybe I'll put that particular trainer elsewhere and make them a once-a-day battle (instead of weekly), and include some other high-EXP Pokémon with different stats (so Special attackers won't have to deal with Blissey's high Sp. Def).
