In high school, most sites were restricted. It was rather annoying when attempting to research a sexually transmitted disease or look at a painting that may or may not have contained breasts.

In college, the only thing I'm guessing that was restricted were like violent / terrorist / sites of that nature. If they caught you viewing pornography or other material that was frowned upon that wasn't blocked, you could lose access.

One of my teachers (real computer whiz) developed a program that enabled him to monitor student activity on any computer he shares a network with, in real time. A.k.a. the entire school. Yeah, it's pretty insane. :|

I remember on the day of exams last year, we were allowed to chill in the library if when we finished early. (which is where the computers are). Of course, some students (yes, including myself) immediately found ourselves a circumventor and began searching sites that would normally have been blocked. From his desk, the teacher began turning off all the computers we were using, one by one. It was actually pretty creepy. Fortunately, he's a pretty cool guy and let us off with a wink and a smug little smirk from his window above the library.

Ahhh, my computer sciences teacher has something like that, too! It's pretty amazing. From his desk, he can turn on all the computers at the same time, send us popup reminders (he once sent us all a message telling us to save our work, and that two of my classmates had their shirts untucked XD;), and then he can view exactly what we're doing without getting up and checking for himself. It's pretty cool, I have to say.

My college actually employs students at their "ResNet" office, so there's some of those people who can't switch off and they share their secrets with the school on how to get around their security systems and on things like say torrent downloading or intranets in the dorms. And they put bandwidth restrictions on those living in the Dorms... kinda sucked last year, but since they're only freshmen dorms, I assume I'll have a better connection this year.

We don't have students running things like that, but every once in a while, a student will "stumble across" a teacher's network password. Not so much fun for the teachers, but we have a blast.

Anyway, on a completely different subject, I finally finished my community service hours. I worked basically did nothing at a recording studio in Perth. It wasn't that bad, actually. I've heard that in some countries, students are required to complete 100 hours and over! Luckily in Canada (or at least in Ontario), we only have to do 40.

I needed to do 75 hours, but I'm somewhere around 92. I've done at least double that in undocumented credits, but I wish I had more that goes on the transcript. Eh, some people have like 500 hours and it's crazy.

Apparently, I have to do community service this year, same thing as a senior. At least 60 hours is the requirement. Frankly haven't done any yet, but I'll be sure to have it completed before the semester.

Haha, oh man I used to whine about the 40 hours of community service required in Ontario but then I heard some people have to do 100 hours a year in some places/schools and I immediately shut up. XD; I ended up with 60 or something, though it was a little harder because I couldn't just do volunteer work... I had to do volunteer work that helped the community in some way that could be justified religiously because I went to a Catholic school. Luckily by the time you make it through several years of religion classes, you learn how to tie ANYTHING into religion, so it all worked out... XD;

One of my schools required community service for graduation. I think it was 40 hours? I was pleased with myself when I told one of the higher-ups in that school that I wasn't bothering with it -- I was moving in a few months. :D;;

Our dorm wants us to do one community service thing a year. I still think it's bull. Not everyone's on the Philanthropy committee -- why should everyone else do their work? Then again, I really shouldn't complain. It's just one project. But still... I don't take into being forced to work that well sometimes. D:

Yeah, I have to do community service in my degree to graduate as well. I'll be doing them some time next year.

My university doesn't require any of that. :/ I'd be annoyed if it did, haha. I'm not really a fan of community service even if it makes me sound like a bad person. Unless I have a good reason to (as in, I HAVE to, or I know someone running an event that needs help), I won't do it. :|

I love helping out the community. I feel that's what we're meant for, and if we can take the time out of our day to help build someone a home or take a walk for the fight against cancer, why not.

I used to be in the IB (International Baccalaureate) Program at my High School. It requires 35 hours of community service each year to recieve an IB Diploma. I never did 1 minute of community service. (I'm such a bad man XD)

But now it's my Junior year and I dropped out of the program. But now my brother is in it.
