It would be in this forum anyway. Nothing too serious.

I was thinking of a controlled battle so that it would be easier to help/compare etc. Though comparisons might not work for the best either.

Anyway, by controlled, I mean, like same two trainers (and abilities) same two Pokemon, and same 4 moves and same setting. That way the writer could play around with what there is. Then there can be a freestyled portion.

  • Do you usually write in the order you feel like writing or in the order people are going to read your story?

I write it in the right order. I think it up crazily. Right now, I'm imagining the ending chapters with winter and snow and the Trainer's camp high high high up in the North Kanto Mountains.

Well, true. There is that. But that's a good thing, cos it means you're going somewhere, and not just making it up as you go along.

  • If anyone needs any tips on writing battles, there's actually a nice way of doing it: go join any board's ASB. Seriously, having multiple people depend on you to describe every attack simply because each one could have over 9000 possible outcomes really shapes you up. Not to mention a lot of leagues' standards are pretty high, particularly TCoD's (which was based on the league I was a member of, at the risk of bragging), so you'll be run through a wringer before getting to play.

That's if, of course, the thread doesn't get off the ground (or at least in addition to it). I think it might be an interesting idea to start a thread and not only practice but critique each other's battling techniques. But an ASB league? Definitely good practice.

    What is an ASB league?

I'll start the thread today, just not right atm.

And talk about waking up, I woke up in an awkward position and my arm hurts now. :S

  • What is an ASB league?

To start off, ASB stands for Anime-Style Battling. The concept is pretty simple. Members of a board may obtain Pokémon (the rules on starters tend to vary by league; the one I played gave you six non-legendary basic or baby Pokémon of your choice for free) and challenge other members to a text-based battle that takes place completely on a message board. In this battle, the combatants would take turns submitting orders for their Pokémon (two or three a round, and these could be any move in their movepool, even TMs and HMs -- hence the name, Anime-Style Battling). A third member, the referee, would step in after receiving orders from all battlers to write up a detailed account of how each move was executed.

It's probably better to show you an example of how it's done. TCoD's league is probably the closest comparison to the one I played, and its refs tend to be decent. I'd give it a thumbs up in that regard, but if you're still curious, SPPf has their own (although it's a completely different system), and I've heard that PE2K recently opened theirs (which pretty much stemmed from the same system TCoD was primarily based on).

Hilariously, a friend of mine/one of the original developers of the ASB league I'm familiar with (and, admittedly, probably one of the most well-known systems) tried to bring it to PC, but it constantly got rejected. This is in part because of bad advertising (He just really didn't know how to pitch it.) and the fact that he kinda abandoned the attempt after awhile.

Hmmm that sounds like an interesting system. I like the idea of a 3rd party. I've seen it to some extent in RPing, but of course not this well organized.

With RPing though, of course there are several ways to encounter a battle with another member. Perhaps one of the more difficult but no less fun way, is that of action reaction posting in a realistic manner. In this case, both RPers have to be skilled, and know not to god-mod. I haven't had the chance to do this here at PC though.

Plus I could see it being rejected in terms of unfamiliarity (your friend's attempt). What I've done in RPs here, for battles, is just post one half of the battle, while the other RPer my character is battling against, finishes it off. A predetermined winner would preceed this though.

I haven't had the chance to do this here at PC though.

One thing to note, though, is that ASBing is only RPing up to the extent of "lulz I submit my orders." The players don't actually have characters who interact with one another beyond "my Pokémon does something to yours" unless you really want to get cracked out. Generally, this is taboo because in ASBing, you're encouraged to pull off moves that are physically possible for the Pokémon (like have them stand on their head and whistle "Dixie"... which I've actually done in a battle before, just because the ref said in an earlier explanation that I could theoretically do it), meaning you could possibly involve the other trainer if you're seriously an ass.

In other words, it's only really optional to react in character as a trainer in one of these battles, and you certainly don't have to lead up to it. Simply put, you're you (unless you actually create a character if you really feel like it), so you'd just react the way you would. Hands remain on yourself and your Pokémon because it's the ref who decides what actions happen to the other party.

Or in even simpler terms, the only roleplaying that really goes on is between yourself (literally) and your Pokémon. Whatever happens after that is the ref's decision, which really prevents any possible godmodding whatsoever.

Or in even simpler terms, the ref is not optional, and that party is trained to be objective. There have been problems with objectivity in the past, but generally, that's also very taboo.

As for unfamiliarity, yeah, but mostly, the dear boy just didn't know how to explain it. It's possible to propose the league and get it set up (because that's how it's pretty much been done wherever it's transplanted itself), but you really have to know how to present it to the public and make it sound simple, fun, and not like what we already do in the RPG forums. He was so focused on presenting possible changes to the root (i.e., new things he'd bring into an ASB league) that he neglected to fully explain what the system was (perhaps with examples), so it just got written off as just another RPG. *shrug*

But I do have to say the league was great practice for writing battles. All of mine ended up being pages long because every little detail ended up coming into play somehow. I'd have things like broken bones or large gashes, attacks being deflected, parts of the arena being used as shields or weapons, all kinds of things to make things exciting. Now, I've taken that lesson outside of the ASB scene. As in, basically, the first rule is that a battle isn't meant to just be about Pokémon A using Move A on Pokémon B. It stretched my imagination and challenged me to think of how a battle might be affected by the battlers themselves and where they are.

    ....

And now I almost want to pick up where Macabre left off. And I would, except it's a headache and a half to actually organize something like that.

  • Just on page 5 of my new Pokemon script series thing if people have heard what a script series is? Page 5 of Episode One I'm on anyway, I'm thinking of letting someone write a script if I fill them in on a storyline, I'd tell them exactly what should happen so they can write.

  • ASB sounds freaking awesome. But how do the refs keep it accurate? Do they use the stats from the games for things like hp, defense, and attack power, or what? Could I be a ref and bust out my D&D dice, rolling for things like accuracy, critical hits, etc.?

Didn't we just get done explaining to someone else that making it sound like you want to engage in a non-kinky master-slave relationship due to an apparent lack of interest in writing your own fic concepts when you're in a fanfiction community isn't such a good idea?

    Anyway.

ASB sounds freaking awesome. But how do the refs keep it accurate? Do they use the stats from the games for things like hp, defense, and attack power, or what? Could I be a ref and bust out my D&D dice, rolling for things like accuracy, critical hits, etc.?

First, health and energy. How it's taken depends on the system. The one I used measured it in percentages, with every Pokémon receiving 100% health and energy at the start of the battle. (Shedinja wasn't an issue. We didn't really have abilities. Even then, everyone was capable of using moves that dealt super-effective hits on it, so it didn't really matter.) Additionally, for base damage, we'd look at the base power of each move. You know, like how Tackle supposedly does 35 base damage. In some systems, there was a damage scale where we'd match up 35 base damage with a certain range of percentages (for example, 1 – 3%) and decide how much damage the attack did, based on the circumstances. (Circumstances being not only the evolution line and size comparison – like Steelix doing more damage than an Onix and Onix doing more damage than Rattata – but also the surroundings. Tackle done by a Rattata diving into a pool to hit a Magikarp might do less damage than on land due to resistance from the water.) Instead of PP, meanwhile, each attack took a certain percentage of energy based on the same kinds of variables. (A healthy Onix in a wide-open area had an easier time Tackling a Rattata than a Rattata with a sprained back paw who needs to do some swimming to get to the Magikarp, if that makes sense.)

Second, stats. There weren't any in the same sense of the games except for Speed. (e.g., A Pikachu would always go before a Wobbuffet in the ref's write-up of what happened in the round. Unless, of course, something was pinning the Pikachu down.) This is also why it's called Anime-Style Battling: because stats were pretty much thrown out the window in the anime, too. For HP, though, I've talked about how sometimes, damage could be affected by circumstances. Some refs tended to take off less for a Rattata's Tackle against an Onix, for example, in part because of the obvious difference between Onix's defenses and Rattata's offenses. There were still stat boosts, but generally, that just meant an extra percentage point was added or subtracted from the damage an attack deals. For example, a Slash might do 6% normally, but after two Swords Dances, it might do 10%. On the other hand, if the opponent uses Iron Defense three times, it'd go down to 4% damage.

Third, accuracy. Yeah, it tended to be randomized. All of those have a percentage one way or another, so most refs would just take it out of 10 or 100 on a randomizer site. For example, if it's a 50/50 chance that a Pokémon won't move because of Attraction, rolling a 36 out of 100 might mean it moves while rolling a 76 might mean it doesn't. Generally, refs were pretty trustworthy about that and would state what they rolled at the end anyway.

Hopefully, all of this made sense. I'd be happy to root around for one of my old reffings to show as an example, although I'm not entirely sure if I've got any.

Oh, so it's like Pokemon Elite 2000 Forum's Ultra Role-Play Game? [brick'd repeatedly]

...In other news, my mom is at the ER for burn injuries and I'm stuck at my grandmother's house for the night.

  • Yeah! Exactly!

    ....

    *tosses another brick*

Sorry to hear about your mother, by the way. Hope she recovers quickly.

Also, on more on-topic note, how many people have actually read Reviewing and You? All the way through? This is not an ego question. This is an "Astinus and I are quirking eyebrows again, so somewhere, a kitten is going to die" question.

That and I'm actually curious to know how many people are following the advice in it.

I read it, though it was quite a while ago and I really should go check it out again. I hope that I follow the advice, but I only review, like, once every two months anyways, so I don't get much practice with it.

  • Well, Val, I have *is hit by a brick* but I don't pay it the same attention than the other stickies *is dropped a brickwall on him* such as, well, The Lounge!

Why is that you ask? You feel people is still not reviewing properly or something? Well I am the first to admit that I'm not great a spell or grammar checker but when I like a work I know full well why I like it so I can talk about it. RIght now it's the best that I've got to offer (plus characterization, I think I'm good at it) so I always try to maye my reviews as useful as possible and make sure I talk enough nonsense that I can't be infracted for breaking the word/character limit.

Please, please, please, don't kill Kittens. Every time a kitty dies someone masturbates your local deity (eg.: Arceus) creates an Internet Explorer fan. Or even worse things.

ASB... that reminds me that I'm yet to finish submitting my squad at Serebii. And the whole battles thread sounds fun and I can't believe I didn't realize it had been already posted so I go to check.

Now, please please please let me plead again:

Kill No Kitties (Kitties R Cute). Plus, "Mota", my cat, will certainly kill me if she gets word that I fail at protecting kittens, however meta this task becomes. If cubs are a necessity, may I kindly suggest chihuahua dogs instead?

And Giratina, I'm sorry to hear about your mom's burns. Here at home it is Dad who suffered a lesser accident - he got a nasty cut in the right thumb.

Well seeing as one of my own quotes made it into there, well, I can't deny that I haven't read it, now can I? XD :P

Mind you I can't even remember if I had read it like 6ish months ago, or whenever I started regularly coming to the fanfic forum. As I have learned to always read the sticky rules among other things.

I'd still defend myself however, saying that even reviewing is a learning process, and we can learn only to develop it. Other than that, we've already discussed a few things. ;)

    *whistles innocently*

Why is that you ask? You feel people is still not reviewing properly or something?

In a sense. While I don't expect people to get the details right, Asty's had to delete a crapton of one-liners recently. On top of that, there were a few where I just felt like the reviewer went into it thinking they're there to assert that they're better than the writer, rather than actually make more of an effort to help them. One of the most basic lessons that I repeat over and over again is that reviewing does two things:

    1. Tells the writer what you think.
    2. Helps the writer improve so they can get a better opinion out of you.

In other words, I feel like a lot of people are doing things out of snark or to be superior, rather than to actually lend a helping hand. Granted, I'm snarky all the flipping time in the Writer's Lounge, but there's a line between what's done outside of a review and what's done leisurely here. But the point is, yeah. Snark is okay when you're not reviewing. Reviewing, however = trying to help people as well as stating your opinion.

That and I recently facepalmed at a consistency thing. Oh, guys. Please fact check.

Please, please, please, don't kill Kittens. Every time a kitty dies someone masturbates your local deity (eg.: Arceus) creates an Internet Explorer fan. Or even worse things.

So we unleash unspeakable horrors upon the world, and you tell us not to burn kittens alive?

If cubs are a necessity, may I kindly suggest chihuahua dogs instead?

This is tempting. I never liked those things.
