  • Thanks for the replies! It's nice getting good feedback on my first published map. :D

Anyways, I brushed up on the map a bit in the last few hours. Here's my take on it.(Don't mind the spoilers if I'm not addressing you, I'm just rambling)

    @ colcolstyles,
    Spoiler:
    Thanks for the advice!

    @ pokestick,
    Spoiler:
    Thanks for the help!

ANYWAYS, in addition, I'd like to point out specifically my use of sideways stairs. It's pretty hard trying to find/make sideways stairs in a 3rd gen rom without making them look ridiculously out of place or take up too much space (diagonal does that). However, in my personal opinion, working with only forward stairs is a nightmare. I like having creative freedom when I map out my ideas. If anyone wants to recommend some tiles for that, though, that would be an ENORMOUS help.

For those of you that will look at the first part of my post and say "tl;dr", enjoy the edited version of the starter town. Rate it as you wish, although it seems most of the obvious problems have already been accounted for. :P

  • I hate natural mapping and it hates me.

    Map Name: Wildwood Pass
    Base ROM: Emerald BPEE
ROM Hack: N/A. It was for funsies. ^_^

Comments: Boring stairs are boring. I replaced the stairs with a grassy slope the player can walk up. So, those are not tile errors. Um, the small rocks aren't too plentiful in my opinion in case anyone points that out. If you think about it, those rocks would likely be formed by a rock slide or such. Which means that they would be grouped like that. Much like cave mapping. Well, should be a fun one to rate... Right? xD

    Rated Map: Wildwood Pass.

    Rating: 8.5 - 9 /10.

Reason: Well, it's a very nice map, however, I just have the feeling that it's too messy, and that to much is going on. I also needed a bit of time to find the cave entrance and exit =P. I do love it, but yeah, too much going on.

    Suggestions:
I don't know. Clear it up a bit?

Well, your normal mapping style is utterly fantastic and I think you should revert back to on the basis of this map. Yeah, this map may be pretty on the eyes and nice and very large and with quite nice playability. But your normal mapping styles is so much better than this. I know this isn't a tile or palette rating thread, and I'm not going to rate based on that. I'd thought I'd just tell you what I think of the tiles in hand. You have no idea how close this is to the tiles and palettes in my hack xD. The mountains are stunning and perfect and cannot be beaten. The trees blend well in together and Zelix's style of tile making goes well with this map. But, what stands out the most is the default emerald wild grass tile. If your changing the majority of your tiles except for the grass tile it's bound to stand out. Well, yeah that's enough about the tiles and onto the aesthetics of the actual map. I know you strive for playability in your maps, and in a natural style it's really hard to keep playability as good as your normal style involved. But yeah, the playability is done well enough to look good and still be a nightmare to beat. So yeah, playability is a nice even mix and it looks really good. The whole map together is outstanding and there is no real reason for anyone or me to downgrade it on any basis. Except one thing, and this one thing is probably the biggest problem with natural mapping. This is the obvious border errors, I know most of them won't be seen in game, but seriously there is way too many and it's an offputting fact when rating and looking at a map of this calibre. Final Rating, 9.4/10.

First of all, your grammar is absolutely horrid :D
Second, there's no such thing as a border error that can't be seen in-game. The border blocks can only be seen in-game so a border error implies that, during gameplay, the player can see the border in a spot where they shouldn't be able to. Ergo, if they can't see it, the error is nonexistent.

I'm in too much of a hurry to rate sasquatchd00d's map like I should but I will point a few things. Firstly, I really like those stair replacement tiles. Those were a really nice touch. Rock placement, along with flowers et al., is great, especially those clumps of rocks in the mountains. It's a shame they won't be seen in-game. One thing that really bugged me, though, was your tall grass clump shape. The edge of more than one clump is a very straight, diagonal line. I can understand having two or maybe three blocks in a line but six? I think that's pushing it.

    Very good overall though.

I just love how another one thinks the same about stairs then me :) stairs are really boring. Every one is using them so this is much better idea :) And also the map is pretty amazing. I like how you placed the trees and mountains(spelling). The playability seems great too. Hope to see more from you.

Hey, here's a thought!! What if the map/maps next to it prevent the border error from happening because the maps are connected in game? DUH!!

I rate the map a 10/10 for dedication, good use of tiles, and of course the great stair replacement.

Hmmm... What can I say about this map?

I see that the same grass tile was used for the whole map. Also, flowers in the grass? Nuh uh. That isn't a good choice. I do like the way the character is forced through grass, but on the ledge nearest the bottom exit, the character could take a few steps and their out of the grass easily. The second is good. And, you can't exit from the top exit once you go down the ledge.

    I rate a 6/10

This map is really nice, the only thing that irks me is that pole fence near the house. I don't know why but it just...bugs me. :\ Aside from that it's really nice, maybe cut down the grass a few spaces, maybe~

I see nothing fundmentally wrong with this map. However, flower placement could be better... try placing them in small groups diagonally. I think the grass is a little TOO neat... try spacing it out a bit. You seem to have mastered shadowing trees, which is pretty good for someone who's only just started mapping.

Once again, a very Nintedno-y map, good job. Without a doubt your best route so far. 9/10 :)

I WANT to like this, but it's way too empty right now. All the buildings in the center are way too close together... and once again flower arrangment is poor. Go back to page... 164 I think, a guy called sasquatchd00d showed people how to correctly map flowers. Why have you used a roof for a bridge? It looks odd. And so does the lone rock near the gym. I do like the waterfall though.

This definitely has potential to be awesome, but needs some improvement beforehand. 5.5/10

P.S: I've just noticed, there's a tile error on the path at the bottom of the city.

    Spoiler:

I used the roof as bridge cuz That was the only thing I had :(, but now I used a door, so the player will have to go inside/into the montain/waterfall. And if there's still empty place, in game I'll put people and stuff. Hope just there's not too much flowers.

  • I like this map! I think I see a boarder error over by the cave entrance though...
Besides that it has a nice shape, enough grass, naturally shaped cliffs, a nice use of Kyledove Tiles, and a very nice palette! Snow is my fave! XD

    Overall Rating: 8.5/10
