4th Gen What do you think about Barry?

Well, this is a thread for you guys to discuss about the impetuous and pretty ambitious guy. He's my favourite character in D/P/Pt.

He puts high value on friendship (did I say the meaning correctly?), because he asked Professor Rowan to give Lucas a Pokemon although the professor didn't have such plan, and were going to reproach them. He also took all the responsibility of enticing Lucas to enter tall grasses without a Pokemon, in order to let his childhood friend to have a Pokemon.

They are friends, they are rivals. They remain competitive. Barry and Lucas battled constantly through the game, and they grew from it. And Barry always dreamed about becoming the strongest trainer in the world, or as strong as his dad, Palmer.

But. The event in Lake Acuity surely struck his confidence. Because of the crushing lost to the Team Galactic Commander, Jupiter, he realized there're something lacking inside him. That caused a positive change on him - becoming a little bit serious, realistic and mature. At that time, he thought it's not about becoming the greatest or something, it's about whether you have strength to protect something. Uxie was suffering, being caught by Team Galactic by force, all he can do was watching helplessly, and hearing the taunts from Jupiter. It gave him a clear destination: become stronger.

Although, in Survival Area, he's still talking about the win streaks with Lucas, and how strong or cool his Pokemon are by asking Lucas for a battle, but, all these are just for one thing, becoming a stronger trainer.

Phew, a lot of words. He's my favourite character in Pt after all. Anyway, what do you think about him? Please discuss here.

  • I liked Barry; his peppy and happy-go-lucky personality was a change from the snobbish/overconfident personalities of Silver and Blue.

    He's awesome. All around.

I mean, he has that hyperactive personality, which is just the trait I'm looking in for a rival. Not to mention his almost OP team.

  • Barry was a very interesting character, he's hilarious and clumsy which is different from other rivals but after losing to Team Galactic at Lake Acuity he learns to become stronger and he even ended up as the strongest Trainer in all the games until Red's Pikachu got a level buff.

I loved Barry, which was one of the reasons I enjoyed D/P/Pt.

Thank you for you guys' opinion! PlatinumDude you're right, his personality is totally different and unique throughout the Pokemon game rivals!

@Bourne-mouth: Yeah, that will be good if rival has such kind of personality, you know, it will boost myself to become better too!

@Hikari10: Same as you! But he can become the strongest just because the player beat the Elite 4 30 times, and his starter will become Lv.85, if the player doesn't do that, Red will still be the strongest trainer. XD

  • My opinions mimic those already said. He was quite a wonderful character, and one of my favourite rivals in the game. Brendan/May always seemed to be a bit lacking in personality while Silver and Blue were both very aggresive and snobbish. Black and White seem to have picked up on this, as Cheren and Bianca seem to represent both halves of Barry's personality. That makes the pair of them my second favourite rivals.

Cheren is the drive to win and become stronger. He wants to fight and he wants to become the most powerful trainer in all of Unova, but over the course of the roleplay he learns that being a trainer is about defending what one cares for and doing what's right. Barry was similar, as you said, realising that Pokemon training is about standing up for what is right rather than becoming stronger.

Meanwhile, Bianca represents the peppy, cheerful and enthusiastic side of him. Bianca shows a great love for people and Pokemon, as does Barry, and they're both known to be rather clumsy figures. They lack experience with Pokemon, and they both show a great desire to go on a grand adventure. As the game progresses they become more mature and more refined individuals, realising that their time with their Pokemon has made them into a better person.

Just something I had noticed at least. Barry was a fine character and I'd love to see him pop up in a later game, even if it's just for a short time. He was hilarious and wonderful. Blue, Silver and Brendan made me want to become a better Pokemon trainer so I could beat them. Barry made me want to become a better Pokemon trainer so I could have some fun battling him.

  • Barry annoyed the heck out of me to be frank. Maybe it's me growing older, but idk I just don't appreciate the whimsical nature of Barry. Right from the get-go he was fining me money, and he just didn't shut up. So I pretty much hate him.

    My two cents<3

He was fining you, and you've just given your two cents. Ha.

Yes it's true, his whimsical nature could annoy some. His theme probably suits his entire theme. Can't deny that he's unique as a character though. He doesn't have as much charisma as Cheren, and he's not as interesting as Bianca, but he still sticks out against every character in the 4th generation. That's saying a lot.

An impatient rival in which at the start of the game you have to chase after him to give him a town map.

  • I hated him. HATED him. Easily the worst aspect of D/P/Pt. His attitude was, quite frankly, annoying. His impatience was frustrating, and I just hated having to listen to him babble incoherently. I wanted to extend my fist every time he ran up to me just so I could clock him in the face whenever he tried to run into me. Maybe after a few hits to the head he would learn to calm down and behave like a normal human being.

  • Pearl is one of my least favourite rival, but I pretty like him anyway. He has an annoying side, but remains an interesting character. And, his battle theme was great. They should have improved his personnality though, he's a character "too simple" to my mind, and for that reason can't be as awesome asGreen, Silver or Ruby, who had more interesting and original personnalities.

  • Ugh, I just couldn't like Barry.
He was such an annoying little brat...is it wrong that I kinda felt happy when he lost to Team Galactic?

  • lol i'm gonna get flamed so bad for saying this

    I'm sorry to say this, but I wanted to punch Barry's little face in. He was too hyperactive and peppy for me. Ever since gen 3, the rivals were becoming less rival-like and more friend-like, which is fine for some people, I guess. To me, though, I preferred the badass Silver and Blue from gens 1 and 2. They were more rival-like and I loved Silver out of all the rivals. Maybe it's because I played Pokemon Silver as my first Pokemon game and the rival was quite a jerk, or maybe it's because I'm just a cruel person, but I really didn't like Barry. sowwy ;~;

...though his recurring battles at the Battle Tower/Battle Frontier were useful

  • I don't even remember his personality being that bad, because when I played through Diamond Barry wasn't constantly by my side or anything xD Idk I thought he was kind of funny, he's just a rival :I

  • I would say that he wasn't that bad as a rival (I actually liked fighting with him, unlike some others *cough*Cheren*cough* or annoying to me *cough*Bianca*cough*) but I did miss the badass characters from earlier gen. (not Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald. Brandon/May/Wally were definitely NOT badass). If I had to rate them, I would put them like this:

    Silver>Blue>Barry>Wally>Brendan/May>Cheren>Bianca

  • Worst rival in the series so far. Silver tops the list, followed by Blue, then Wally, then Cheren/Bianca, then Brendan/May, and then Barry at the very bottom of the list.

He basically just annoyed me with his hyperactiveness and retarded "humour" or whatever it was with the "m8 i'll fyn u a jillion dollarydos lolz".
