There should be a kind of hacking-contest here, because there are many new and motivated users which might find good partners and friends.
There are already quite a few hacking contests out there right now. Every month (starting on the 10th day), the HotM begins taking votes. There's also HotY which starts late in the year and results are shown early into the next year. I actually talked to DrFuji about creating a ROM hacking contest that consisted of a few prizes, such as:

    Custom user title
    Banner
    Custom emblem

The thing is, the already existing contests kinda give the same things for winning. Also, I'm still not sure of an effective way to set up a contest that people will enter and stay committed to (I mean, unless there was some sort of money prize in there, but you know...). Another thing to note is that with HotM and HotY, people don't have to go out of their way to make a hack specifically for the contest: they just get nominated and entered if others think their hack is good/enjoyable/fun.

EDIT: I'd also throw in that if PC has too many ROM hacking contests, I think the quality of the hacks and the interest in the contest as a whole might plummet. Right now, whenever something like HotY comes around, I can tell that people actually get genuinely excited for the big revealing of who's involved. If we cluttered the place with these contests, the "Hall of Fame" thread and basically the overall satisfaction of participating or winning one of these contests would drop greatly.

Actually you're right. But I think, as for the HoTM contest, there should not be only 3 hacks that compete together. :D

I actually think that having a HotM is a tough thing to do. Most hacks that are presented in the Progressing Hacks section get abandoned anyway, so choosing the correct hacks to showcase in HotM would be a challenge. Another thing to think about is hacks don't get posted everyday, so having more than three in HotM would be really tough without reusing some hacks from previous contests over and over again. I think what the mods have going right now is a fair balance, but as I said, it would be tough no matter what to keep showcasing new hacks for the contest.

Haha, my planned berry system is not all that impressive.

I'll probably make 10 OWs (or tiles?) for berry trees, five for empty/planted and five for ready to harvest. Maybe in ten or twenty irl minutes they'd regrow, and an empty berry tree can only house the berry that was originally placed in it. This minimises the script necessity and isn't really all that useful/important, so the player wouldn't really reharvest them unless he went back to the same route much later. It's just so I can boast another feature in the "Features" section of my future thread.

Berries being hidden in the ground is really a good idea, and maybe sometimes randomly found on trees (much like Hidden Grottoes). I'm obviously going to keep many berry shops around the place if I manage to implement healing properties to the unused/Pokéblock only berries. What do you think?

A pedometer is also really convenient imo but I don't really know how to implement one (I just have this D/N system lol).

That reminds me guys, some word has reached me that there exists a force male gender intro patch out there for FR. Do you guys know any around here?

    https://www.romhack.me/skipgenderchoice/info/ yeah right there :)
and in the topic of contests, I agree with Renegade, there's not enough hacks to put more than 3 in HOTM

    Much thanks :)

Anyway, I do believe that there isn't enough hacks out there with enough quality/dedication more than say three to pin up on hack of the month. Strictly speaking, there aren't more than six or seven hacks for even HotY, so after a year or so there won't be a hack to judge.

Or a thing you could change is the assessment of a hack in question. How is a hack in progress rated? On what basis? Just because there isn't a release yet, should it be excluded?

This was about 6 years ago (I think...), but I remember there was a Hack of the Week competition. Pretty much most threads in the 'Progressing Hack' showcase ended up with an award.

But it was, to some extent, helpful in finding new up and coming hacks.

Hack of the Week was always silly in my opinion. Besides, it wasn't staff run so was never 'official'.

Also @ anyone asking: Something has been added to the forum splash to /hopefully/ reduce Help/Question threads being posted outside of the Beginner's Lounge subforum. (It was previously a forum announcement but it has now expired) :))))

How do you guys feel about mixing OWs from FRLG and RSE? Does it look bad in your opinion?

Well the main problem is that the OWs are viewed from different perspectives - the RSE one is focussing more as a face-level view while the FR one focuses a more overhead view. This overhead view has gigantic heads and smaller bodies, and the later gens continued this. Obviously they would clash rather harshly. IMO you should try your style by basing it on the tiles you use. If the tiles give a more over head perspective then try FR.

I agree with what everyone else have said so far; they're two totally different styles, and wouldn't look that well when they're collided. Same goes for everything else, really, even sprites and tiles--if you combine 3D-looking ones with 2D, they'd seem very out-of-place.

RSS NPCs are ugly and don't fit into a 16x16 door from FireRed. But it looks quite neat if you "convert" RSS NPCs to FR-style :)

Am I the only one who prefers the RSE OWs...?

You may have a point there, but then it's quite easy to convert them as you said. From GSC to FRLG there's been a smooth transition of perspective, which may have helped Gen IV and V a lot in them getting good graphics.

At this point I'm wondering which style you think is better- HGSS/DPPt's or BW/B2W2's? I mean obv the BW one came later so it's more advanced but... well, everyone has their opinion.

I prefer RSE too actually, I just wouldn't mix the two. I hate everything about Gen 5, to me it might as well not exist.

Gen V, definitely. That was a very lively generation, filled with animations, fantastic character designs (well...I mean, barring Ghetsis), and just so many things that would benefit hacking.

...Now if we're talking about using BW as a base...well, in that case I don't really have an opinion. Either game works for me, but I'd say that V is easily the most detailed generation.

About a week or two ago, Luxray Hacker put up a mini hack contest. A contest where its not a full hack but maybe like a beta type of a hack, where the game would go up till like 4 gyms. A hack that would take maybe 3-5 hours of gameplay I guess. Just for beginning hackers to practice.

There could be HOTM style in the Beginners Lounge . I don't know if that would work.

I don't see how they destroyed Pokemon at all. In fact, they added a lot of really neat features to the game that made it more advanced.
