Is the 3DS a "Pokémon machine" ??

I personally agree. Not liking most of nintendo's games. I'm not a fan of Mario, I was more a Sonic guy back in my childhood.

It's been almost a year since I bought the 3ds, the only two games that have touched it; Pokemon Y, Zelda: Link between worlds. Same with the DS; Pokemon Diamond,Ranger, Black and White 2 and MAYBE a few other games. Gameboy you asked? Pokemon, Pokemon, Pokemon.

    What are your thoughts?

The sole reason I bought a 3DS was Pokémon XY (and its wifi).
Since then the only other game I've bought is Pokémon OR (preorder), and that makes up my list of 3DS games.
So yes, the 3DS is a personal Pokémon Machine.

The DS however is different, since at the time I had a girlfriend who always played DS games with me on multiplayer. So aside from Pokémon Pearl, SoulSilver, Black and White 2, I've also got Mario Party, Mario Kart, Bomberman and Yu-Gi-Oh Nightmare Troubadour.

But, back to the Gameboy Advance, the only games I have for that is Leafgreen, Sapphire, Emerald, and Mario Power Tennis.

So personally, I'm only in it for Pokémon, but I do enjoy other games and am willing to buy them if I have people to play them with.

I think of it more as a JRPG machine. Between Pokemon, Bravely Default (with Bravely Second coming out in the new year), Fire Emblem Awakening (there's speculation of a sequel for this too after it sold a million units), Project X Zone, both Etrian Odyssey games, all the Shim Megami Tensei games, The Mario RPG games, we have a Xenoblade confirmed in the future too. That's a lot of JRPG, and they're mostly really good. Well I've heard Sticker Star was bad, but generally speaking.

No. Even before X and Y are announced, I had a 3DS. I will admit however that the sole reason I bought one is because I wanted to see the flashy 3D effects.

That doesn't mean that Pokémon is solely a '3DS machine' however. Nintendo is a powerhouse in the handheld corner and has made many successful games. Examples include Super Mario 3D Land, Fire Emblem: Awakening, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, Mario Kart 7, Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Super Smash Bros. for 3DS. Just because you're not a fan of Mario doesn't mean that Pokémon is the only thing that's worth it. I haven't bought any of the games I listed, but I certainly want to get one of them for how successful they are.

I only get my Nintendo handhelds for Pokemon games, so if a next generation handheld gets announced, chances are I'll mainly get it for the corresponding Pokemon game so I always remain up-to-date.

I did have some non-Pokemon games for the DS, but I found those games crap so I just stuck to Pokemon and I'm glad I did.

Whilst Pokemon games are a huge draw for me when it comes to buying Nintendo consoles, I think the 3DS has a lot more to offer than just Pokemon. There have been a fair few good quality JRPGs released (although nowhere near on the level of the PS Vita in my opinion, which is pretty much JRPG central) in the last couple of years, and Nintendo have really made an effort with the 3DS, even though the 3D element is still just a glorified gimmick most people don't even use.

Granted, they've been re-releasing a lot of old titles in the form of updated remasters - Ocarina of Time, etc - but that's become a fairly common strategy this gen, and there is also the original DS' library to draw on thanks to backwards compatability...and the DS had a lot more to offer than just Pokemon as well.

The New 3DS looks promising, too...if nothing else, it'll have Xenoblade Chronicles, which I'll buy it for without hesitation. xD

Nintendo is relevant just because Pokemon, Zelda and Mario Games. Sure, there are few exclusives that are good, but 90 percent of users buy the console just for the above.

The PSP line is better in all aspects except one; I doesn't have POKEMON!

Is kinda sad that Nintendo is just milking their franchises with low end consoles. I will give anything if they make a Zelda game similar to skyrim.

I think for a lot of people who don't like NIntendo's core characters the 3DS has definitely become an awesome JRPG machine, and Pokemon definitely falls into that category. But there are plenty others, like the Shin Magami games, Bravely Default, Fantasy Life so on and so fourth.

...Touché. now that you've mentioned it, I could see where you're coming from as most people who bought a 3DS is for X and Y.

Yet, for some reason, I still don't see it as a Pokémon machine. Even so, if Nintendo wants to focus on their main three franchises, then I'd still like to think that the 3DS isn't a Pokémon machine. There are many Mario games and Zelda games on the 3DS, as well as SSB4, so I guess it's more of a money machine than anything.

But at least they're also aware of their other franchises even if they focus on their main three too much. I could see Fire Emblem and Animal Crossing getting a new game thanks to their recent success. Not to mention that they're powerhouses in the handheld department.

I wouldn't say it's a Pokemon machine even though I'm the same with not being interested in Mario + Zelda franchise but since Atlus makes many JEVORPGs (Japanese English Voice Only RPGs), it isn't only Pokemon machine because there are some quality RPGs for the system.

As Zeria said, it's nowhere compared to PSV, but you can find some good quality ones =)

Long story short, as long as 3DS monopolizes SMT, it will have quality games for those who aren't interesting in more than one franchise from the Big 3.

As for milking... it's everywhere... if you look at any huge gaming series (AC, CoD, FIFA, ...) they are milked.
It's just probably more visible on Nintendo because Mario and Zelda are more prominent for Nintendo than mentioned examples for Sony/Microsoft.

Isn't wi-fi actually crappy on 3DS? (or was it browser?)

Mario Kart 7 There are 7 games basically the same. I mean, they don't even try to make it somewhat different. Only a few improvements. Mario Kart you can race in a car! with mario..and luigi..with your friends..ummm...ummm.. IN 3D!!!

I probably should explain that my wifi is WPA2 password protected. A DS Lite is unable to connect to WPA2 strength wifi, so I never had that luxury before. I've used the wifi functions on Pokémon Pearl and up on my holiday destinations and so I knew what I was missing out on.

Whether the wifi is awful or not on the 3DS is not my concern, it works and I'm glad it does. I've been able to connect and play with my foreign friends for the first time - it was great.

I agree with Satoshi. Nintendo's milking is nothing compared to other. In 25 years Mario Kart had 8 games... Smash Bros. is only in its fourth game. In 7 years Assassin's Creed had 8 games. Cowadoody has yearly releases, Need for Speed had yearly releases for a long time...

When I'd first gotten my GameBoy Color, it was solely due to Pokémon; without it, there was no other way to play main-series back then, so I had to get it. Did have other games for the console, but have rarely found myself going through them. For GameBoy Advance, it's the same reason. DS—I've primarily gotten the handheld for Pokémon as well, but began exploring other series—ones that I liked—to see how they run on handheld consoles and whatnot, and the experience wasn't too bad at all.

Now, for 3DS, I've purchased a set of it for quite a few series, and not just this one. However, Pokémon was definitely one, huge reason as to why I've decided to buy; I'm a pretty big fan of the series, and it wouldn't precisely feel right for me to miss any of its releases.

Mario Kart games were very different from each other in the early days at least. Super Mario Kart, Mario Kart 64, and Mario Kart Double Dash were all very different experiences from each other. And then Mario Karts DS and Wii introduced online play, so that changed the game again. If you want to carry on and say that all those games are the same, you may as well say all racing games are the same.

Sorry if I'm a bit sensitive to that criticism, but as a pokemon fan it really bothers me when people say that X and Y 'are the exact same game as what I was playing in 1998' or that I'm being exploited by Nintendo, or any other cliched BS people say. If anyone personally feels they've had their experience with Pokemon or Mario Kart or any other franchise and isn't interested in playing the newer games, that's fine, no one is forcing you to buy or play these games. But don't **** on the fanbase of those franchises for still enjoying them. That's basically the equivalent of pushing a kid off the monkey bars because you no longer enjoy playing on them.

You could say the exact same thing for Pokemon.

Pokemon ORAS There are 25 games basically the same. I mean, they don't even try to make it somewhat different. Only a few improvements. Pokemon you can be a Pokemon trainer! beat the elite 4 and the Champion...with your friends..ummm...ummm.. now IN 3D!!!

That's kinda true, but.. Pokemon began with 150 pokemon, now a day there's 700+ and still adding mega evolutions. The story, some mechanics and moves, Characters, etc, changes with every game. XY is on of best looking games, and ORAS will be the best looking game on the 3DS. And it's actually competitive!

I've played all AC games and I can guarantee to you that I can't go back to the first one. It's the same idea but it all changes. Don't compare history, to a story of a plumber trying to save a princess, please. And I actually really like smash bros, but it's all the same. Not to mention, in 3-4 years, it will be the same price as the day of it's release. Talk about milking -.-

That's the same with MarioKart too. I play Super Circuit and the DS one and there's a big difference even though they're from consecutive hendheld generations. They do add new features each time. For MK8 they added anti-gravity, before that they added gliders. It might not be evident to someone who doesn't follow the series. And the releases are pretty far apart too. We won't be getting another MarioKart for atleast 2-3 years.

As of Nintendo handhelds being Pokemon machines, you could use them as that. Enough Pokemon games are released every generation to justify the purchase of a console just to play Pokemon. But there is no need to restrict yourself to just that. There's plenty of great games other than Pokemon. There's GTA, Super Mario, Nintendogs, Animal Crossing, Professor Layton, Fire Emblem, Zelda and what not. GTA Chinatown Wars (DS) happens to be he highest rated handheld game ever too.
About one-third of the people who bought a 3DS/2DS have bought Pokemon X/Y, which is great, but don't forget the two-third's who didn't buy it for Pokemon.
