    (This idea was Jake's.)

This is a collab article, hence it is in this section! This means that anyone can contribute - discuss and offer parts you've written up in here, and I will add it to the OP.

The subject - a round-up of jokes/pranks websites have done with some relation to Pokemon. What we need are examples with a description of said pranks performed. Given the subject matter the deadline for this to be finished is 31ST OF MARCH, which is a bit ambitious but still achievable. (Needs a bit of time to be transferred to wordpress with all the images, checked there and also posted on AF for countries that are in the future, like Australia. =p) Images (created or existing) are also welcome!

A rough structure - feel free to agree or object to this!

Oh man I have one contribution... From my youth when I used to actually draw and spent time on the weird site of deviantART.

    It was April 1st, 2008...
Everyone on DA had this Mudkip icon by DA user Chimpantalones as their avatar for the entire day!
    Pokémon April Fools Jokes

The infamous "So I herd you liek Mudkipz?" meme...
No one could change their icon until April 2nd. Kip.

I'd love to see the history of every April Fool's event on PC~ :gawk:

I have screenshots of PC during 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. I think 2013 too? But definitely have a folder of screenshots of all of those if that'll help lol Just looking through my hard drive and found them.

FYI, 2011 and 2006 were the best. I remember 2006 too if that'll help anything. 2007 I don't think anything was done iirc.

Oh excellent! I was hoping that you would have screenshots of previous April Fool's Days. If you want to help write about the events of the days, I'd been fine with that.

Ah yes, that's a notable AF one, cheers for raising it! Any interest in writing it out in full?

Ah, that'll be very useful indeed, Nica! Please do share them. No need to worry about sizing (but any cropping you'd like to do is fine) as we can resize images on the wordpress side. :)

Ok Astinus if it's cool can I do 2011 and 2006? :) I'll write 'em up on Monday, and provide the screenshots on Monday too.

I'm not Astinus but I imagine that would be alright.

I've meanwhile done a draft for the last section, as an example of how each prank being summarised will look like. It doesn't even need to be as long (and it's not very long at all tbh given it's filled up with an image and video).

One other prank I want to write about is one done by Serebii - a pseudo-prank. His site doesn't really do AF jokes. Back in 2007 however, before Pokemon Diamond and Pearl had come out outside of Japan, he put up all the official English names for places, characters, attacks and items on April Fools. https://www.serebii.net/archive/April-2007.shtml (bottom of the page). People were naturally sceptical given the date, but it then turned out that he had put up the real names and had merely waited for that date to do so. A pseudo-April Fools!

    2011

PokeCommunity's 2011 April Fools prank was the first prank I was involved in staff-wise (and therefore the most fun for me!) It had three layers. The forum had a forced Serebii style, followed by word replacements, and then swapping around the forums everyone moderates. Other forums had individual stuff too! Game Development had how to ride a WAILORD, Black and White had an event announcement of three rare Pokemon and Battle Stadium had a Stunfisk tournament.

    Some of the word replacements:
THE GREATEST PEOPLE EVER = they, tacos = emblems, Stunfisk and Herdier = Black and White, applesauce = April Fools, Plasbad = bad, Blanket = game, hotel room = Discussion, Arrest = battle, crazy = other, Smugleaf = Snivy, Bacon = Tepig, Wotter = Oshawott, INVISIBLE MAGIC = trade, England = anime, Pickle = Reshiram, Cucumber = Zekrom, Fresh Meat = New Users, Fish = Welcome, Vuvuzela = Media

    Highlights of the day:
    Stunfisk City!
Current Generation Blankets - includes Stunfisk & White, Chicken & Pastries and Cherrim/Hippotas/Hitmonlee.
    Rebecca Stunfisk
Users got renamed! crazyworld9) instead of Otherworld9)
Plasplasplasplasbad... it added a new "plas" whenever you edited your post. NEVER ENDING BAD.
The greatest people ever could arrest you! IF YOU LOST YOU WENT TO JAIL.

    2006

PokeCommunity's 2006 prank was probably the most memorable to me. At this point I had only been a member for six months. I remember early that morning I was posting in Mixed Community Groups, and suddenly the entire forum went black. Within an hour (cue me freaking out due to not realising it was an April Fools prank) the forum style changed to what is now PokeLink 2.0. The forum banner changed "The Todoroki Community" and I realised we'd been hacked. Some users tried to bargain with the hacker... and ended up getting banned. Secret forums were apparently leaked by Todoroki, too. I, on the other hand, tried to not leave Mixed Community Groups, afraid of being banned by Todoroki. Later on we discovered it was a prank. There was no hacker, and although people were saying "praise Todoroki, we'll do anything for you", some people took it too far and were permanently banned (last I checked). Rest in peace guys. Here's hoping you forgot the whole incident? :)

    _______________________________________________________

Images: If you can uh... crop out my stuff that'd be awesome lol. I chose three for every April Fools cuz I had a few for some and a lot for others, and 3 fit perfectly to make 'em all even.

https://imgur.com/a/m3MiF <-- Uploaded in year order!

Looking at this stuff... you guys are awesome. Glad to have been part of all the April Fools I have. :)

Also lmk if you need me to write anymore. :) I also have two screenshots of google's previous pranks if you need those too.

Cheers! I had a go at incorporating those two parts into the article's WIP draft (first post in the spoiler). I'll edit the images later; may use this article as an excuse to test WordPress' cropping too actually when the images are separately uploaded [that way we don't have to worry about image links going dead down the track]. For the moment I went with the raw images you've uploaded for the draft though, don't want to tackle the cropping right now.

Presentation will change a touch on WordPress as well.

In 2008, the website Feminist Gamers ran an article about a police operation which busted an illegal Pokémon fighting ring. I've done a short write-up below. Felt pretty awkward to summarise so please shoot feedback at me!

    --

In 2008, the website Feminist Gamers ran an article about a police operation which busted an illegal Pokémon fighting ring. The story described an underground Pokémon battling network which ran across the United States. The article cited the "extremely small red-and-white balls" Pokémon are kept in, without food and water, as well as the prizemoney that comes with Pokémon battles, likened to "illegal gambling", as examples of the inhumane treatment of Pokémon. References were also made to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Pokés (SPCP) as the organisation which has taken in the Pokémon involved in these battles, drawing comparisons to similar organisations which exist in the real world for protection against animal cruelty.

This article was reposted around the internet on numerous other forums and websites back in 2008, and it's still just as humorous today in the way it exposes some of the more questionable elements of the Pokémon games. Give it a read below:

    Well, to get things started.

    2007

There was no April Fools Day prank played on PC.

    --

This is as far as I got before I started feeling light-headed. If anyone wants to add more to these, then go ahead!

    2005

The beginning of PC's April Fools pranks! This day had most of the moderators switch accounts, with everyone acted completely opposite of how they usually did. An example of this is Mr Cat Dog (moderator of Pokémon General at the time), who created the member account BritneyPikachu119 to spam up the forums. This also meant that they were moderating sections that some of them had never looked at before, which I'm sure caused a mess of things. To add to the members' frustration, the Daily Chit-Chat thread was closed.

    2008

This April Fools prank had every members' dream come true: they all became moderators!

They actually didn't. Instead, every regular member's post bit had them displayed in the moderator color, but they didn't have any staff power. Though many members did try to see if they did have staff powers, just in case one of them was actually a mod.

    2009

Consider this the sequel to 2006's prank. Everyone was renamed to Todoroki. Avatars, signatures, user titles, and user bars were all disabled, meaning that there was no easy way to tell who was posting. Todoroki continued his reign of terror, leaving his mark on the forums for a long time.

    2010

Sometimes, April Fools Day pranks don't happen on the actual day. PC's staff had this problem in 2010, where they were unable to finalize a prank in time for April 1st. To go with this, the staff created the SlowpokéCommunity, where the entire site celebrated the Slowpoke species. The forum skin was changed to one dedicated to Slowpoke, and everyone had avatars of the dopey Pokémon.

There were a few members who weren't happy about the prank because it happened a day later.

    2013

To keep things simpler after the events of 2012, PC's staff decided to go back to confusing members. Each time any member posted, their user name and avatar would be replaced with a Pokémon. Their post count numbers would also reflect which Pokémon they were, removing that hint as to who was posting. On rare occasions, the member would become a shiny Pokémon, and their user name would have sparkles added to it.

Sorry about the late reply, but that's basically all I gotta say about the event. I don't even use dA any more and everyone having Mudkip avatars they were locked into for a day was all there was to it, pretty much.

Ooh, I didn't know of that one! Neat write up! I've added it into the OP with only a couple minor changes iirc (one being the very beginning to flow on from the previous entry). Looks pretty good to me! Sadly the site appears to be long dead. =(

    *etc*
Cheers for those, Astinus! I've added those into the OP as well with again some minor changes/additions; let me know if any of those need to be changed! Also let me know if you're too busy to tackle the last few (sans 2012 if you scroll down) and I'll cover for you.

No worries, I went and wrote it out neatly in the OP. Sounds like it was fairly straightforward, haha.

A new administrator under the name of Lerroux rose into power, leading to many staff members to "quit". Thus, leading to moderator applications and the staff forum being "open to the public." At the very end of the prank, it was revealed Went was Lerroux, and anyone who sent in a moderator application received the Ley Roo emblem.
Woah, I see your deleted post there! You're most certainly allowed to contribute, don't feel like you're not allowed! That's a good starting point (maybe a touch more detail and adding in one of Forever's images for this) - are you still fine with this being used within the article?

General comment @ everyone - we could still use another couple entries like the above if you have another AF joke to contribute.

One addition: Went barely played Lerroux. Nick played it mostly. Razor leaf too iirc and I know I did too.

Since I wrote summaries for TT's DCC

    2012

Lerroux was an admin "invited" to the forum by Rukario, in order to force PC to become more like Facebook. Many members of staff quit over this. Because of these new open positions, Lerroux started to accept moderator applications from members. The staff forums were even revealed to the members (and can still be accessed today!) When the prank ended, it was revealed that Lerroux was a character played by a few members of staff and there was no Facebook takeover.

    2014

Nearly every forum had a rotating name and description that changed each time PC's main page loaded.

    Pokémon April Fools Jokes

Here's an example for the Third Generation and Second Generation sections.

    2015

This April Fools Prank hit tha streets wit Gizoogle! PC had a filter to change many words to make it sound like PC's members were a little more gangsta. Especially the staff, whose names were spiced up. To add to the confusion, the colors of PC's forum skins were inverted. (There was a toggle to remove this, since many members complained that the inverted colors caused headaches and other issues. We like to have fun without causing harm here!)

Hey Marcin, there's a slight correction you need to make to the article, under the 2013 section. The picture that you used of you being a Ludicolo was from our staff collab from around February 2014. For April Fools Day 2013, everyone had the randomized avatars and user names.
