FireRed hack: Gary's Mod (Beta 2 Released!)

I've been wanting a game to play as the rival for ages, this looks very promising and I'm excited to start the beta!

Small question, for the unobtainable Pokemon in this hack, will there still be Pokedex entries, or will completionists have the satisfaction of a complete Pokedex should they get all that are available in the game? I can't remember what the reward in FR was for accomplishing that anyhow, but I was just curious. Keep up the great work!

Sorry to burst any bubbles, but there isn't gonna be any sort of reward for capturing all of the available pokemon. There isn't even going to be all 356 Pokemon in the hack because certain Pokemon (ex: groundon) have no place in the story and would feel kinda cheesy if I added him in for the sake of adding him in. Needless to say, you can hack him in through cheats/modifying scripts if you want but there's no reward for doing so. But please, feel free to catch as many as possible. Make Prof. Oak's dream come true! ;)

Lol only if you apply the patch and your save is from beta 1. If your save is from, say, beta 2.02 then applying patch 2.04 won't have any effect on your save file.

With that I think most of the bugs have been found/squashed so I feel confident in starting up progress for Beta 3 which will go up to the Elite Four. Beta 4 (aka the final version) will have post game content including the replacement to the Sevii Isles: The Kanjoh and the Kanenn Isles!

Yes, you read right, the Sevii Isles will be replaced by the Kanjoh and Kanenn isles! As you may have guessed, these islands are mixtures of Kanto and Johto/Hoenn and may contain some familiar landmarks. Legend has it that special plates deep within the hearts of the islands modify the weather, making it habitable for exotic Johto/Hoenn Pokemon to live on the islands. But with these new islands, new secrets and new battles await. Well, are you ready? (Beta 3 will contain some of the Kanjoh and Kanenn Islands, but Beta 4 is where you'll get to explore them fully).

And yes, Betas 3 and 4 are where my hack heavily deviates from the canon of Fire Red/Leaf Green. I mean really, am I just supposed to let you lose the Pokemon Champion title?

So, uh, I guess my thing was from Beta 2 because my save file was still there. However, some of these happened:

Basically, I was grinding in the north part of Route 2 (right before Pewter City), and after I applied the new patch I grinded normally for a while then went to Pewter to heal. I started walking slower and slower then the first image happened; I loaded my last save and the second happened. The third time, I managed to get to the Pokémon Centre but when I tried to enter, the third image happened. The fourth time, I got into the Centre and stuff was normal, but when I exited, everything went black.

Did I apply the patch wrong or something...? Probably not your fault but I wonder what I did wrong.

That's odd, something definitely went wrong with the patching. Did you do the 2.04 patch on a clean fire red rom or patch it onto a rom that had a previous patch on it?

Well from what I understand is that saves are just recordings of the progress that you've made in a game. Saves are compatible with other games (ex: shiny gold and gaia) but since each game uses different flags, variables, and routines the saves usually end up buggy and unplayable.

What I suggest is to get a clean fire red rom, patch the 2.04 patch onto it, rename the rom so it has the same name as the save file (if your save is called bananas.sav then rename the rom to bananas.gba) and the save should be playable from the newly patched rom.

Well, I was aware this wouldn't be a 386 hack, I just didn't know if the Pokedex was going to be altered so there wouldn't be a bunch of random empty slots impossible to fill. Then again it also makes sense since this isn't Ash/Red.

I just started playing the other day and noticed something. When starting a new game, the professor says nice to meet you. I was just wondering if the dialogue should be changed since Gary/Blue/Green is his grandson?

Also, if you don't want to use the Gen5 TMs mechanic, may I suggest a bigger store selection for the TMs? Like perhaps have most of them in it but expensive or something so it isn't as broken? Since TMs are discs it would only make since for there to be copies of most, instead of half being a "one in the world limited edition" thing.

I beat Brock and I am adoring the game so far. I love how you changed the dialogue around with a lot of NPCs and signs, so even the first hour of the game or so feels like a whole new experience. I can't wait to see whats in store after the Elite 4.

I've ran into a strange glitch. Somewhere around the time that I got Cut, wild Pokemon encounter rate dropped to almost nothing - in all areas. I got through the Rock Tunnel without a single encounter. They do work generally, because running around in a patch of grass for a while yielded a few encounters, and Sweet Scent works, but it's like the rate has been lowered to 0.0001%. It's not a problem with the rom as I repatched a clean one and still nobody comes out to meet me :( Do you want my save & how can I send it to you?

I arrived at a point in history when I can not go on: I beat mr. fuji and the other old, and I managed to get the poke flute: but I can not go to saffron city, because the old has not yet prepared the tea: is there anything else I need to do first ??

I was thinking about replacing Pokemon I'm for sure not going to use with others that would be in the game and I might actually follow up on that. As for TM's, I have a workaround so you won't be limited to just one TM use per playthrough. ;)

There are a few reasons why that might have happened. Are you using the 2.04 version? And did you try to revive a fossil at Pewter City? Because for some reason, wild encounter rates drop to 0 while reviving a Pokemon. You'll have to wait for the revival process (which is really fast, like 255 steps) but I'm working on a fix now.

Congrats! You reached the end of beta 2! There are other things to do like collect all the available mega stones (listed below) and challenge koga. In beta 3 you'll be able to go to Saffron City up to the Elite 4, but until then you're done.

I just noticed. Everything else is going swimmingly, but in my Pok?dex there were only two Pok?mon: Pidgey and Rattata, the two species I'd been grinding on after I started Beta 2.04. Any way to fix this...? I really want Blue to at least finish the Kanto Pok?dex to rub it in to everyone that he's better then Red and his grandfather was wrong.

It's also slightly bothersome because I can't quickly check what Pok?mon I've caught.

Ohhh yeah, I did leave the Helix at the Museum and didn't go back for it because the thought of navigating the Diglett Tunnel again made me sick. Thank you! But also... could you maybe simplify the Tunnel a bit? Before we get Fly its the only way of going back to the first four towns, and as it is it's really annoying to do so. I appreciate how you made it into a fresh new location, but to have to go through a maze with all those Arena Trapping Digletts and Dugtrios too high-leveled to scare off with a Repel is... not fun. Once would be alright, but there are a few reasons one might want to go back more than once.

That's odd, so your pokedex only has pokemon from before you applied the patch? Or it only counts pokemon you've caught after you applied the patch?

Haha thanks, there are modified attacks in the game if that's what you mean. There are tools floating around that let you modify attacks if you're trying to get an attack in that isn't in the game normally.

Hmm, I understand your frustration. It is a pretty steep level curve once you get there, I just never had trouble with it since I had a flying type pokemon and all the diglett's and 3/4 of dugtrio's attacks were ground type (sucker punch was the only thing I feared). It was an easy place to grind exp for a flying pokemon though haha. I'll put in something so the travel back isn't so painful.

Just wanna throw out a heads up that I'm planning on mapping most of the Kanjoh and Kanenn Islands before getting into any heavy scripting so expect little progress as I'm trying to whip out these maps as quickly as possible.
