July predictions!

    Thought this might be fun.

July is here! With a new month comes the (fairly good) possibility of new US/UM information, meaning more/less speculation! So, what do you think we're getting this month? Character information? Info on the new Solgaleo/Lunala forms? A little more about how this will be an "alternate story" from S/M? New Alola forms? Maybe even a new trailer? Maybe nothing at all?

    Throw your predictions out there!

I can't really predict as to what information we'll get, but I guess maybe the artwork of the new player character designs would be likely since that happened not too long after S/M news coverage officially began as well.

That said, a new trailer should be expected, with at least one new trailer dropping every month afterwards in the lead-up to release day.

Didn't we have a month's drought of news for SM after they were announced? I remember a very large gap.

I'd expect a page spread from CoroCoro promising more news in next month's issue - because of course - but I think they're more likely to continue focus on Marshadow and the other upcoming events they have at the moment...at most, maybe a teensy snippet about what is different which can be interpreted in a million more different ways, but nothing concrete that will please anyone hoping for news here, haha.

Some more artwork would be nice, though. Even if there isn't much to go with that. I think August/September will be a better month for news, then in October we miiiight get a demo if we're lucky. Then someone will leak everything about a week before the official release again.

Two months to be specific. S/M's announcement was in February 2016, but actual news coverage didn't begin until May.

Like you said, I do think the next CoroCoro issue should have some new info since we had nothing last issue, aside from artwork of the Ultra Solgaleo and Lunala. Expecting at least one trailer as well, since we know how much that tactic worked in the pre-release period for S/M.

Does that set a precedent, do you think? I didn't keep up with SM's news releases, but if they had that short of a coverage period when they were brand new games and USUM will at least be set in Alola...well, the outcome for some worthwhile news this month doesn't look good. There is substantially less to say on the gameplay/new features of USUM if they're using SM as a base, and revealing too much of the plot differences would utterly destroy the intrigue and put a lot of people off. The most I'd ever expect on that is character designs and a tiny bit of blurb, honestly. I expect a lot of what makes USUM different will be held back until the game is released.

That said, I'd expect the frequency of news to drop rather than the coverage period to reflect the similarities between the games/the fact that we already know all the Alola Pokemon, unless they have some new Alolan forms etc. lined up. SM had more than one reveal per month I'm guessing, and CoroCoro isn't the only source of information for new Pokemon games. Maybe they'll just space things out a little more...in which case they could easily start this month and just reveal new info once or twice a month.

You do have a point, since we have a very short period between announcement and release this time around, similar to B2/W2. I think S/M had a new trailer drop every month since May 2016, though sometimes we had two trailers within a month.

I'm likely expecting the player characters' official art, and maybe an overview of the graphics and the slight change to Alola's environment.

Five months is still quite a long time really...but then again, considering updates are not that frequent, perhaps not. Maybe not a trailer every month, but they could definitely give us SOMETHING every month.

Wouldn't the change to Alola's environment constitute a pretty major spoiler, though? Like...if they confirmed that those unfinished buildings were Gyms, even by accident by showing a screenshot. It'd also establish the nature of the games and when they take place. They'd have to be verrrrry careful with that. But it's possible! Knowing GF, those reveals would be intentional.

Visually I'd expect them to use exactly the same base for SM too...although a nod to the New 3DS/2DS' enhanced capabilities would be nice. Given that they've introduced the N2DSXL as a cheaper price point, there is no reason they couldn't squeeze in some extra features or improved running times etc. for the New model...it's not splitting up the userbase if it still works on the older models, after all. That'd be nice.

I'm sure they will only show the minor aesthetic changes, and not try to intentionally have trailers spoil things. People do also like to discover what the trailers may be hinting at, but I do feel Gyms should be kept secret until a later trailer if that is the case.

Well, it's a difficult balance, isn't it? Especially with games like these. They need to show how they're different in order to draw interest and actually show that they're not just the same games, but they also need to be careful not to spoil too much for people who are already interested in the games...although I wonder if they care that much, because they're probably pretty confident people are already interested will buy the games no matter what, and there's that whole "nobody is forcing you to watch it" argument.

I would have thought that, if they were going to include Gyms in USUM, that'd be the first thing they'd want to show - a lot of people complained about the lack of Gyms in SM, so showing USUM with them would go a long way towards pulling some of them back in, maybe.

    Agh, marketing. I hate marketing.

I do agree that Gyms should be shown in a trailer at some point assuming if Gyms do become a thing in Alola, but not too early so that people can still sustain the hype. Marketing is tough for sure.

Well, they don't need to tell us who the Gym Leaders are, what the Gyms involve in terms of puzzles, how they'll complement Trials - assuming we'd get both, or a mix of them - or anything else; just that they're there. The fandom will sustain the hype with or without information...as is evidenced by, amongst other things, this section of the forum. xD

But I don't expect a Gym announcement if Gyms are thing, beyond perhaps saying that Gyms are a thing.

Right now, it doesn't feel like we're getting anything, but that can easily change in a week or so. CoroCoro will leak around the 12th which could have some tidbits but I'm not expecting anything major. They could also announce upcoming trailers a week prior similarly to how they did when advertising Sun & Moon in the run up to the release.

If we do get something then I'd like more background on the story, some clarification when these games take place, and more information on the protagonists.

I remember that during S/M's pre-release, new trailers usually came out close to when CoroCoro released. I know July has only just started, but we'll see if news about a trailer will get announced soon since we do need an overview of what to expect.

Can we get any new information from another source but CoroCoro?

We should be getting trailers dropping every month or so, since they tend to reveal a fair chunk of stuff anyway. They also spread faster across the internet than CoroCoro news does, and that proved successful for S/M's pre-release period.
