Ash has promised countless people stuff though.

    The kid doesn't keep them.

We'll see. They may manage to keep it this time around. After all, he did keep his promise to Goodra to come back for it. And he certainly kept his promise with Lapras.

Besides, and I probably should correct myself for this, it's actually Misty and Brock who specifically promise Ash this time around, not actually Ash. Ash if anything only gives a suggestion. No final goodbyes either:

Promise or no promise, odds are slim that they'll come back. The only reason I would want them to come back is if they explain how they got their hands on those Mega Stones. Unless I'm mistaken, they never explained that in SM43 and would shed some light as to what they've been up to since they were last on the Anime. Brock getting one makes some sense since he can freely travel around. Misty, on the other hand, how in the bloody hell did she get hers unless she left the Gym in her sisters hands in order to acquire it.

Maybe, but I don't think they'd even mention it if they had zero plans of having them come back in the first place.

Besides, remember Goodra. Ash left it behind and vowed to come back for it, and he ultimately fulfilled his promise right before the Kalos League.

And personally, I really want her to pursue her goal again. It was just flat out unacceptable having her simply being forced to put her goal to the side burner. If they really needed her to leave, they should have had her either pursue her goal, or otherwise actually change her goal completely of her own free will with no outside influence.

It's a high possibility that they got it from Kalos and if that's the case then they might be back to explain during Ash's Kalos visit.

  • Or during the Alola visit. Don't forget, they did indicate that they'll come back for Alola.

It is a possibility but going to Alola and talking about mega stones doesn't make sense cause Alola isn't for mega evolutions. But ya, they could just mention where they got it when they go to Alola, discussing it in detail in Alola doesn't make sense.

Personally, I hope that when they come back for Alola, they actually STAY this time around. Yes, I'm even willing to say this about Brock, who until now, I stopped liking since Johto considering he showed tremendous promise here, and besides, with his Pokemon Doctor goal, he'd actually be an invaluable asset in case they end up not being near a Pokemon Center. As far as Misty, she definitely needs to resume her Water Pokemon Master goal after the writers and her sisters essentially stole it from her, and Lana may just be key to restoring her goal.

  • It will be nice if they stay but it will not happen soon as of right now.
And they actually shouldn't bring out the topic of mega stones in Alola.

To be fair, Mega Stones can be used in Alola according to Bulbapedia, in conjunction with the Z-Ring, so if anything, that would be even MORE marketing material for Gen VII. And since Misty also hinted at wanting a Z-Ring, that would actually be even MORE reason to have them discuss it in Alola.

Besides, to be honest, I honestly don't see why Ash should even revisit Kalos other than for 20th anniversary stuff. Other than maybe seeing Clemont/Bonnie and/or retrieving Ash-Greninja, or maybe mega evolutions, there doesn't seem to be any reason to go there anyway, especially when Serena isn't even in Kalos anymore, she's in Hoenn. Same deal with Unova or any of the other regions. At least with Kanto, that was Ash's home region, and dealt with the whole Alolan variants anyhow.

Well, one flaw with their reappearance was that, quite frankly, they spoiled far too much regarding their reappearance. If they really wanted to go that far, they really should have brought them back permanently.

Still, we know they're going to be back before Alola concludes.

Having them promise that they'll go to Alola seems telling to me since they could have just told Ash that they'll see him when he returns to Kanto. It certainly means more than an ambiguous mention of other regions in an interview.

And I don't understand why the Mega Stones are even remotely interesting. They're just a plot device that requires no explanation. The best way to utilize Misty is have her help Lana, who looks up to her.

Oh, I agree with that last bit. Heck, I even thought that, if anyone is to help inspire Misty to regain her Water Pok?mon Master goal, it's Lana.

So far as Mega Stones, to be fair, Misty's put on a pretty tight leash, so having her have a Gyaradosite makes little sense when her sisters probably can't even let her go to Pallet Town for a prolonged period of time based on the beginning of Battle Frontier before calling her back, much less let her go to Kalos to get the stone there.

EDIT: BTW, the Japanese subs for this episode make it very clear that Ash, if anything, is the first challenger to not only break through Mega-Gyarados's attack, but also actually BEAT it, so if anything, that actually makes Misty's battle against Ash, heck, even a lot of her skills during this episode, even MORE impressive than initially thought, since it implies she had a lot of trainers LOSE against her. Well, she most certainly redeemed the Gym Leaders' name after this, potentially rivalling that of Brock's impressive battle against Kiane. After the crappy treatment Gym Leaders got in AG, BW, and to a lesser extent DP, they needed redemption, and they got it.

Here's the sub proving this claim:

On a related note, here's the sub showing the promise, in case anyone is still in doubt:

BTW, that's not my tumblr account, but it is someone I follow (my tumblr account is more along the lines of "otnesse").

But it is not something that needs to be explained. If I have to try:

    1. Misty can leave for a vacation as long as her sisters are around. She was in Hoenn, after all, and she views Alola as a possibility.

    2. Someone may have given her the stones as a tribute for her success as a gym leader.

    1. Considering how Daisy essentially threatened to give away badges if Misty delayed any further (and that's while she was travelling from Pallet Town to Mount Moon), I have my doubts about that theory.

    2. That may work, but on the other hand, it would require someone who hailed from Kalos in the first place.

EDIT: Not quite new stuff, but Mayumi Iizuka's niece apparently dressed up as Misty according to this tweet:

    That's adorable.

And while I don't care about the stones, how do you think Misty is going to leave the gym if her sisters are such a pain in the neck?

Well, develop a backbone and stand up to them, for one thing. Or better yet, maybe have Daisy actually take charge of the responsibilities as Gym Leader, even train herself if needs be. After all, Luvdisc is a Splendored Thing did actually have her showing some surprising initiative such as spearheading the rescue of the two Luvdisc for that play, that would actually show her to have some potential to be a great gym leader if she puts her mind to it. In fact, I'm actually a bit sad that they DIDN'T end it with Misty leaving the gym in that hoso.

The thing is that Misty appears happy right where she is, and that development was set up by the Hosos. So while I definitely think a vacation is in the cards for her, I'd be surprised if she left the gym for good. If Game Freak ever gave her game counterpart a new role, that would be a different story.

I have to say that Misty got better treatment than Iris did. Unless the latter returns, which seems unlikely given her relatively low popularity, there is no telling where she is and whether she will ever defeat Drayden or Clair. At least Misty gets to be a kickass gym leader.

And I've just remembered what a missed opportunity the World Tournament was for the BW anime.

If she were truly happy right where she is, I'm pretty sure she would never revisit Ash, or more importantly, constantly delay her return to the gym during her reappearance during the Battle Frontier arc to such an extent that Daisy had to outright threaten Misty to come back.

As far as the Hosos, correct me if I'm mistaken, but weren't they the same ones that had Misty comparing her situation to that of Cinderella in a depressed tone and, in the Japanese version, at least, outright shook her head? Even in that Date with Delcatty episode, the ending in the Japanese version makes clear she's only taking the position of gym leader because she knows her sisters would make it worse, not because she's actually happy with the position. Someone who's truly happy with the position would act more like Apu from the Simpsons regarding the Quik-E-Mart, or Jason Fox regarding school (love it so much that if anything they hated being separated from it for a second even for the sake of friends). Even the Poke-Problem segment for the first episode of their return had Misty not looking too happy when explaining that she has the gym to herself.

The one good thing about this series of episodes right now is that at least Misty actually averted what befell the Gym Leaders of Hoenn and Unova, and to a lesser extent Sinnoh. I mean, honestly, did you see how THEY were depicted? It's literally no different from how Jessie James and Meowth lost to that caterpie in Episode 3. In the case of the Sinnoh Gym Leaders, they only came across as impressive after the really unnecessary nosedive in competency from Ash and Pikachu ESPECIALLY considering they had just taken out a friggin Regice earlier. That's one of the reasons why I hated their forcing Misty to become Gym Leader, and still do, thought to a lesser extent. That being said, she may have been a punching bag until she got the Mega-Gyaradosite, since she implied that strategy was what allowed her to be unbeatable.

As far as Iris, at least Iris is actually ALLOWED to pursue her goal. Misty wasn't and if anything was forced out of it. And yeah, agreed how Best Wishes REALLY wasted a good opportunity for her to come back. Instead we got Dawn who literally had no real reason to be there.

Does she really seem unhappy to you? She comes across as resenting her sisters for leaving her, which is not necessarily to say that she would ditch the gym if they were permanently around. And I don't understand your logic about her not visiting Ash if she were happy at the gym. There is no way around the fact that none of her sisters is even a battler, but they can at least allow her to take some time off every now and then. If she didn't want to be a gym leader, she would have closed the gym down a long time ago.

As for the Delcatty episode, do you have a source for your claim? Here is what Dogasu had to say about it (and this is the guy who loves to point out discrepancies whenever possible):

    Dogasu said:
Kasumi's final monologue as she sits on the diving board at the end of the episode is more or less the same in both versions. Now there are rumors going around that this is the scene where Kasumi decides to go to Houen to visit Satoshi and his friends (this is the last Housou to air before the Mirage Kingdom episodes of Advanced Generation), but that's not the case, and whoever started that rumor didn't know what they were talking about. Kasumi just talks about becoming a better Gym Leader and nothing else.
And for heaven's sake, she is smiling at Togepi during this scene.
