that's because you can fly from the indigo plateau to both kanto and johto, so if you're in kanto, fly first to the plateau then fly to johto.

I don't like teaching HM to my main pokemons, expect Waterfall because it's the best physical-100%accurcy-water move. Fly is just average and I don't like surf.

Magneton you can a Magnetite right after the 3rd badge (just next to Ecruteak city), good pokemon to use (Steel Types are really cool) plus it a has a 3rd evolution. Crobat is cool but it's a real pain when you have to catch a Zubat and train it.
