I would recommend Firered/Leafgreen since they are remakes of the first ever games to come out. They are more simple than the others and offer a fun experience. Then you can move on to Emerald, HG/SS, etc.

If you ever played Diamond/Pearl or Platinum, there is a man who will judge how your Pokemon feels about you as a trainer/friend. (By looking at it's footsteps, don't ask me how! :P ) If you put a Pokemon with high happiness, the man will mention wild Pokemon showing envy towards the Pokemon...

I always walk/run around the region, until it comes to bike paths or hatching eggs is when I use a bike. I bet they can add more features with the bike, like in R/S/E...

Take all the time you need, you can never put a release date on a hack since you never know whats going to happen in my view... I'm liking the new screens though! Finished your first hack which I enjoyed, need to find a suitable Emerald rom for the second though, anyways keep at it. :)

I can deal with status inducing moves, what I can't deal with is powerful attacks, especially critical hits that come out from them, such as Dragon Rush, Earthquake and Dragon Pulse to name a few.
