Hiya! I've never done something like this before, but it looks awesome and unique! I'd be more than happy to help out with the region/character/story design, I think it would be a great experience.
I tend to use Pokémon that I think are cute or cool, while making sure I'm not repeating any typings for good coverage. I also try not to use any Pokémon that were on my team during any of my playthroughs of the other games.
And yes, I always use my starter. xD
I've unfortunately never completed a Pokédex, but I've come extremely close on multiple occasions. I'm just too lazy! While I'm playing through the main story, I usually only catch the Pokémon I like, though I only choose my six favorites to train for use on my final team.

Yeah, the magic aspect is epic! I also found it really unique how wizards aren't limited to magical objects (like a staff/wand) and can actually use abilities for combat, much like Natsu does. :D
Love Fairy Tail! It's awesome, but dub episodes are hard to find. (I can't focus on the action while reading subtitles.) O.o

I received the original Pokémon Ranger when it had first released, but I didn't get around to actually playing it until many years later. I still loved it nonetheless! I enjoyed being able to play as a Ranger and interact with Pokémon in ways that weren't seen in the main series. I thought...
I think a feature like this would come in handy, especially because I'm very picky about the genders of my Pokémon. For example, I'd prefer my Lucario to be a male, while I'd like my Gardevoir to be a female.
