You should use Profile Privacy to hide specific things, like making it only your friends can see your Contact Info and Visitor Messaging. So if someone isn't on your friends list, they can't see your VM's. Genius!

You should stay invisible, that way people aren't going to see you using PM, viewing profiles etc. I'm staying permanently invisible on PokeCommunity
