  • oh my god I didn't even notice it was tonight. that's gonna be awesome. I'm suitably jealous.

    have fun!!
have not seen Only Yesterday yet but I've heard very good things, so it's only a matter of time! both Mononoke and Fireflies are two of my favorite Ghibli's, in fact they flesh out my top 3 with Whisper in the Heart as the #1, but I'm still missing a considerable chunk of Miyazaki's filmography, so. should probably hop on that.

my Malick ratings (so far) are The Tree of Life > The Thin Red Line > Days of Heaven > Badlands, and the fact that I fell so hard for Days of Heaven is a testament to how fucking good the other two are. I don't really even like war films that much but The Thin Red Line was absolutely incredible, imo. need to see the other two at some point, even though I've not heard good things about To the Wonder. Knight of Cups I'll be seeing in theaters even if it does terribly just so I can see a Malick film on the big screen.
hahaha really? I'm always a sucker for sentimental shit like that, for the most part, as long as it's not too mawkish. and even when it is, sometimes. I just thought it was endlessly beautiful and it tugged at my heartstrings in a way I was not fully expecting! plus all the writers' block / creative wells running dry themes struck a nerve.

the 2 stars for Primer surprised me as well, I was fully expecting to love it, but I found it mostly inconsequential in the end and didn't think it was a very successful mindfuck. most of the dialogue was completely uninteresting to me and I thought the end was entirely underwhelming. I fully expect it to go up in my estimation if I ever feel compelled to rewatch it considering all of the shit that I probably didn't understand that took place, but for now, was not a huge fan.

in other news, Days of Heaven was completely transcendent upon second viewing. Malick is quickly becoming one of my favorite directors ever.
It's that sort of temperature around the country. I'm in one of the supposedly colder areas and it's still 30+ all day every day, haha. Last I went to Rome I think it was creeping up to 40 or so, so it's not so bad for you haha. If you ever have a chance, you should go to the Vatican at 12pm on a Sunday. The oul pope pops out for a chat. And heh. Tell me more about this "real Rome". ;]

I've heard so many good things about Florence. Dead jealous. Are you taking a train from Rome? I want to organise a trip there some time.
yeah yeah use the heat as an excuse ;]

how are you liking it? been to Rome before?

Heh. Well, let me know how it all goes! I should try and see more of Italy really. Can't stay sheltered in my little mountain world forever.

...and yeah, I'm a mountain child now. Abruzzo so pretty central. The freaky chemicals bit is right, though. Having access to 100% alcohol is a pretty decent deal. ;]
Only Rome, and just for the weekend. I can't give any massive recommendations for food, haha. Alas I am broke etc, although you'd be pretty hard-pressed to find bad. I may be able to get some for Florence if you give me a little bit though!

For what it's worth, actually, I do remember one recommendation I got in Rome. Can't remember the place's name, mind, but I know it was on Via dell'Oca near Piazza del Popolo, which you'll probably end up seeing if you're doing any tourism. But as I say pretty much anywhere is probably worth recommending, haha. Just stick with smaller places as opposed to big glitzy restaurants full of tourists.
oh shit I need this blu-ray Badly. I still haven't seen World of Tomorrow which is sad. maybe I'll remedy that today.
Nashville has been on my list for a long time! and Short Cuts. (I think that's what it's called.) my PTA ranking is really similar to yours: Magnolia > There Will Be Blood > Boogie Nights > Punch-Drunk Love > Inherent Vice > The Master.

Alex liked Boogie Nights but not as much as I do. he liked it more towards the end and kept commenting on how unrealistic some of the drug stuff was. typical
oh I've already seen all of PTA's except for Sydney. I think you're definitely right about him preferring Inherent Vice but he told me to give him something that wasn't too much of a headfuck and that movie is very confusing. regardless my favorite of his is PROBABLY Magnolia, because I'm a sucker for 3 hours plus of sentiment.

I was thinking the same thing w/r/t our symbiosis. 8) I've pretty much completely fallen in love with film as an artform, which is weird because up until a couple years ago I actively went out of my way to avoid watching movies for some reason.
beautiful. that album is masterful. I only have their second on vinyl for some reason!

also me and Alex are going to be watching Boogie Nights today. FYI
