Yeah, it's pretty long. The oldest ones don't have their charming style and kinda look creepy, so I would just suggest the anime until it ends. 80-ish episodes is still a hell of a lot though.

I'd suggest reading Hajime No Ippo if you like sports manga, it's pretty interesting if you can follow it.
It's really sad.
Filler episode after filler episode, and the reason they become so good/strong at the end is always a cliche thing.
Friendship, hope, love, or any bull**** along those lines.
That just reminds me of Dragonball Z for obvious reasons.
