Well, I'm not sure I know how to do it either to be honest. What I do is take an area I want to shade, do a quick and rough job of it, look at it and if something looks funny I go back and change it. I do this probably 20 times or more and I save ones that look alright in case I want to compare them. I think it helps to have some kind of 3D image of what you want it to look like so you don't end up with just stripes of different shades.
I think you can get away with cheating a bit, too. If one area has good looking shading then you can be lazy with the others since you have a good impression already. Yeah, if the most prominent part looks good the others can be a little simpler.
When all else fails I look for an official sprite and see how they do it. A lot of the time it's very simple.
