  • I'm surprised that Infernal Legend is doing as well as it is. When I saw that Genesis was one of the eligible hacks, I thought that Genesis would easily take the cake but Infernal Legend is definitely giving Genesis a run for its money. Err, cake.
Why, yes it is. However, I was looking at another tutorial recently and they have a whole section dedicated to pointing out each and every mistake that the author made in that book. :\ And it's a pretty lengthy list, too. The tutorial is actually really good and can be found here. Though if you don't know C, it'll be pretty hard to follow.
I've been wondering this for a while now, how do you get that text when you hover over the dots in your sig?
Well if you have Wi-Fi, you can access the Nintendo WFC thingamajig. I had to change my settings temporarily from WPA2 to WEP (which might be harder for you seeing how your dad is a computer genius/zealot) but I got it working. Sadly, if you picked up the Shiny Pichu at GameStop when they were offering them (which I did), they won't let you get a Shiny Pichu from Wi-Fi. Those Nintendo executives are smart.

I would pick you up a Pichu and/or Jirachi but all I have is Diamond so I can only get one of each. :(
    :D
Well you should at least pick up the Pikachu-colored Pichu via Nintendo WFC or whatever it's called. It unlocks a special event in HG/SS. Are you planning on getting HG/SS?
Are you free this weekend? I was hoping that we could finally have that battle that we were talking about a while back. Saturday's better for me because Sunday will most likely be entirely devoted to Soul Silver.

By the way, have you gone to GameStop to pick up a free Jirachi yet? The event ends on Saturday!
I don't but I'm considering getting some just for that quote.

How about 4:00 AM - 10:59 AM = Morning, 11:00 AM - 6:59 PM = Day, and 7:00 PM - 3:59 AM = Night? That's 7 hours for morning, 8 for day, and 9 for night (as opposed to 6, 8, and 10 in Gold). On the topic of palettes, I'm trying to see if it's possible to make the windows of buildings light up during night. I think I'd have to designate a special color just for the windows, though, because if I just set the normal blue that the windows use to yellow, it'll change a whole bunch of other stuff too.

Well I made it change the colors and I think they look pretty good but now I need to find some way of making sure that the code only runs when the game is in the overworld. Right now, it changes the palette pretty much everywhere, including the entire intro sequence, the titlescreen, the bag, the trainer card, the battle screen (though it's a little weird). So pretty much every place you can think of and then some. Plus there are some kinks that needed to be worked out like if you're on a map at 6:59 PM and then the clock ticks over to 7:00 PM, when you enter a building, the fade out uses the night colors. It's hard to explain but it doesn't look good. I'm sure I can find some way of fixing it though. No problem is unsolvable, right?
Well I found something to do: I got the routine to run once per frame, so that at all times I can access the time and have it be accurate. The normal Emerald game only reads the time whenever a map loads and, I think, every 30 seconds or so but with my hack, I can get the exact time, any time. Hm, I should put that on my business cards...

I think the emptiness has passed. I've already got more ideas for projects. I think I'm going to try to implement a Day/Night System. Thanks to Thrace, I actually have some basic knowledge of how the palettes are loaded so I just need to come up with some algorithms to create nighttime and morning colors and then get my hands dirty with the actual hacking. And as I just typed the word "algorithm", I remembered that I was supposed to find some way of finding the current day-of-the-week from the date. That's two substantial projects right there! For the Day/Night thing, I think I'm just going to use the system laid out in G/S/C (4AM-10AM = Morning, 10AM-6PM = Day, 6PM-4AM = Night), though maybe I'll extend Day for an extra hour because I never really liked how Night was the longest of all the times of day. If you can think of any cool ideas, please let me know.

    Is everything okay with you?
    ^_^
I knew that at any time I could have just used ZDG's code but, as you probably know, I like to do things myself as much as I can and I knew that I would never be satisfied until I wrote my own routine that returned the time. Still, now that I finally did it, I'm not sure what I should do. It's funny. You know how sometimes people say that the journey is more important than the destination, or however that phrase goes? Well now that I can use the time, I don't know what to do with that new power. I suppose I could get to work implementing the time-based ideas I've been brainstorming ever since I began working on the RTC problem (events that only occur on certain days, having a specific map play a special music on August 11th (my birthday^^), different pokémon at different times of day, maybe even a Day/Night System) but I just feel this emptiness inside of me. It's kind of scary.
    Gentlemen... BEHOLD!

Well, after some 6-7 months of trying to figure out how the RTC works, I finally did it this morning. I can't even count the number of free periods I spent pouring over GBATEK trying to decipher what the hell all those terms meant. Slowly (very, very freaking slowly) but surely the pieces all fell into place and after numerous "A-ha!" moments, I finally got it working. By the way, I'm not planning on switching to Fire Red. I actually did all of my work in an Emerald ROM but I figured that with the all the common misconceptions about R/S/E vs. FR/LG in terms of RTC capability, it'd be more impressive if I recorded it in a Fire Red ROM. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go look up some algorithms for deducing the day of the week from the date.
