  • I'm jealous of people who know description. I mean seriously, that is my biggest weakness. I just can't seem to describe a scene quite to my liking. On the other hand, my dialogue is spot on! :D
It depends on the writer really. There are a couple writers here that are really good, so I would imagine that they have a couple of those. Not that new writers can't do it, but a really shocking twist requires the juggling of information and to keep the reader in the dark, yet have it make sense in the end.
It's definitely the most popular genre people go with. I just try to encourage people to stray from the games with the plot. You know, make it a little more exciting at least.
That's one problem with my section. There are some stories that have been done to death, but since they're easy stories to start writing, more and more pop up. If I had a nickel for every original trainer story...
I try to be more on the original side with my ideas. No one can be completely original, since everything you're going to write has basically been written before, but I try to be as original as possible.
That's why I write stuff down. I can't remember a thing! I'm very forgetful when it comes to ideas, chores, you name it. I have a lot of notes on my I-pod and computer for random story ideas that come to me at random times. I only have two ideas that I think I might flesh out. One of them I already explained, but then the other one is a pokemon fanfic.

Do you know what a Gary/Mary Sue is? Basically, it's a male/female character respectively that everything goes impossibly right all the time. And even when things go wrong, it turns out to be a good thing. So the second idea is about a beginning trainer whose mom and dad are going to be named Gary and Mary Sue, so hopefully the connection is there. Basically, the kid doesn't inherit his parent's trait of perfectness, and he has to live up to his father's and society's expectations. Gary Sue was champion of every region at one point, our main character is champion at getting his butt whooped at battles, so you can see the conflict there.
Well I guess different techniques work for different people. I just think that the more effort you put into a story before you start, it's more likely you'll see it through. I'm just going in blind at this point too, so I guess I can relate to it a little bit.
So a zombie apocalypse in medieval times with dragons and magic? I think that could be a great story. One tip I do have for you is that before you start writing, plan out the story. Make sure you have an idea of where you're heading and what your story is about. I spent about a year planning out Alien Poverty before I started writing it. I threw out the little map I made of the story by the second chapter, but I don't think it's by coincidence that Alien Poverty is the only book I've spent more than a week planning out and that it's the only book that I've written more than two chapters. Let alone ten (almost eleven)!

If you need help ironing out the wrinkles or you want a second pair of eyes on the basic plot, make sure to head on over to FF&W and check out the "Plot Bunny Thread". It's a great tool and we'll be happy to help you cover the minor details.
Like something that takes place after one civilization/era ends, but a new civilization arising? If you could explain it to me, it would help flesh out the idea a little more. I had no clue how my three characters were going to die and then come back to life until I thought of an underground company when I was telling you, so you might be surprised what pops to mind.
Yeah, I'm having the same feeling with Alien Poverty. I started going one direction, but then changed my mind and now there are a few loose ends that are going to remain loose. I'm going to have to rewrite it if it's ever going to get published. My new idea (I'm sorry, I tried not writing about it, but I couldn't resist) is about three people in the future who go to this underground company who kill people and bring them back to life. The story is about each of the three people's experiences as they die, since there are reports of people who see things when they die. I thought it would be an interesting idea.

I could always give you some ideas that I'm not going to write about, if you want.
Yeah, writing will do that to you. Ideas are pretty rare for me, so I'm sure to write down ideas for later use. I doubt a lot of them will actually get written out, but I've actually started thinking about my next book since my current one is about to come to a close within the next three chapters or so. I could tell you if you're interested. If you're having trouble with your own ideas, we have a plot bunny thread dedicated to helping people flesh out their ideas. You should stop by once the urge hits again!
My section is pretty much drama free, but it's hard getting people to interact with one another. My biggest problem right now is drumming up activity. It's going to take a while and the section is going to need a lot of love, but I think I can do it.

I think you're doing a great job so far, especially with the scammers. I don't stop by a lot because I don't have wifi and therefore can't trade, but from the staff lounge, it sounds like you guys are doing great.
I don't have much of a social life, but I'll go out once in a while with friends. The reason I stay in my room most of the time is because my older brother annoys the heck out of me and rather than put up with it, I just keep away from him.

Being modded here was interesting. I thought that after Astinus was promoted, I was soon going to get modded, but after the first two months, that feeling went away. After about four months, I was questioning whether or not FF&W was ever going to get a mod. Then I got the PM and I was ecstatic. I was concerned if I was going to do a good job, but I think I'm doing pretty well. My biggest mistake so far was implementing a rule that every chapter had to be 1,000 words. Not a problem to veteran writers, but a bit intimidating to new writers. I enforced it way too harshly, however, and I ended up losing a few new members. It sucks, but live and learn.
I suffered from the same thing, so I know exactly how you feel. I just never had anyone there to help me through it or to remind me that I was worth it, so that's why I VM spammed you. I just don't like people putting themselves down because it reminds me of how I felt back then. Just remember that the feeling will pass. I used to think I was hideous to the point that I would lock myself in my room all day so no one would have to look at me. Now, I'm hot! :P

I still lock myself in my room, but that's because I don't really have a reason to leave. Over the years I just gained more self confidence and now I feel a lot better. Just hang on there, you'll feel a lot better soon. And I love it here too. PC is a great place, that's for sure.
