Sounds pretty interesting actually. Keep the Doctor in character by having him be truly interested in the mystery she poses (like Eleven gets all frustrated with not understanding who Clara is) but not in her as a person to begin with. And as the fic develops, he might realize that it's not just her past that enchants him but actually the person herself...? :3 And perhaps for a really heartfelt ending, they never quite figure out the last piece of the puzzle, rather he accepts that things are what they are and that they are great as long as they have each other! /brainstorm

Nice :3 Read some here for inspiration (if you haven't already?) and see what's been done to death and what might be interesting :3 I don't think there's rules, because obviously Ten became smitten with Reinette quite easily and Eleven didn't seem to have much problem with entertaining River's interest in him. There's just the ordinary angsty "oh no you'll die before me, I'll get hurt, better not get too emotional to begin with" or "my life is too dangerous for you if I care about you" or "I'll rob you of your shot at a normal life" which he pulled on Rose several times *shakes fist*

I totally understand. I think it was the same for many who loved Ten on the show ^^ But you know, Ten's never really gone, there's rewatching and there's fanfiction and he's in the 50th anniversary special that you have yet to see! Allow me to give you a cute moment:

Yeeeah... As a Doctor I find him more rude and silly than Ten was. Ten was awfully compassionate actually. But I love the plot, filming and whole atmosphere of Matt's seasons :3 It's a better show in some ways, even though Tennant is the "better" Doctor imo.

Well, watch Eleventh Hour ahead of time then :3 then you'll know that the Doctor ends up fine after the regeneration and won't have to rip your heart out completely to stop the feels that come after... this...

I was heartbroken at the start of season 5, but the first episode (Eleventh Hour) is so cute and funny with Amy and Eleven so it's not hard to forgive them for taking Ten's place after a while :3
