    Chapter 1 #03 - Lull

Registering her license is easy enough. She knew activation would take a day, but Marie hasn't figured out what to do with that day. She's already been to the marketplace- and spent too much, which she probably should have remembered before buying from the café- and the beach. She's already caught a Pokémon, but she can't challenge the gym until Saturday...

She stirs her cocoa with some small feeling of regret as she idly glances around the café. The nurses said Tuie and Stunnie will be out in about an hour. Maybe she should train? That's a thing people do, right? That's why we're called trainers, haha… But no, it's getting late. She should be in bed by eleven if she wants to leave around nine. Even if she doesn't know what she's leaving to do, having a schedule is probably helpful.

Her eyes drift across the room. It's nice here, warm and friendly with a fair amount of people even at this late hour. She hadn't ever been to a Pokémon Center before leaving Johto, but the ones she's seen since have all been fairly similar. Some nicer and better funded than others, certainly, but all similar. Even down to the community bulletin board near the framed café menu.

Oh, hey, maybe that will give her something to do tomorrow.

She deposits her dishes in the caddy and surveys the board. Ideally, there would be some kind of show or event happening… there's a few listed, but none for tomorrow. Maybe she should look into the Contest Hall's schedule- oh, hey, speaking of…

A sky blue flyer with an image of the Contest Hall and "HELP WANTED" in bold letters gets its picture taken. Marie grins. Tomorrow at 10am, she starts her first job!

    Jolts and sparks
Friday, September 18th - about 8 to 9 am - Slateport City Beach
Once they finished breakfast, it had taken a little over an hour for the girls to reach the market and pick out a new swimsuit for Natsuko. Avril had browsed some other shops as well, recognizing the stands where Jo bought their own items, but didn't get anything for the time being. She would have passed by even later, on the way back, after all.

After that, they arrive at the beach, changing clothes in the public locker room. Tsu steps out in her new black bikini and a black sarong with a flame pattern, keeping a hand on her new wide-brimmed white sun hat so the wind doesn't take it. She has a small satchel strapped to her thigh, currently hidden under the sarong, and she retrieves Shiny's PokéBall from inside, sending the Ponyta out.

Not too long after that, Avril leaves her own locker room with a green tankini, her cloth bag and towel on her shoulders, her sunglasses in place of her other pair, and a berry print kerchief on her head, under which Poppy is resting comfortably.

"Ah, the beach…" Tsu looks around the area, but it just seems like a normal beach to her. "Let's have some fun!" She pulls her phone out of her satchel, angling the shot so she can take a selfie with both Shiny and her new swimsuit in it. She flashes a grin and a V-sign, showing the picture to Shiny. "Look how cute we are!"

She notices Avril, enthusiastically waving to her. "Hey, Avril! Isn't this great?" She hurries over to her new friend, while Shiny prances along behind her, having fun in the sand.

"It really is a nice place! Wow, it's been so long…" Avril replies, her eyes jumping to different people and locations all around the beach. "Uhm… now we're supposed to get closer to the sea, aren't we?" she chuckles, her words covering out Poppy's enthusiastic chirping.

"We can! It'll get hot soon, but the water should be nice and cool." She leads the way, striding confidently into the water, only to immediately jump back to shore again. "Ah! Haha… it's colder than I thought!" Shiny laughs at her from the sand, preferring not to get her hooves wet.

Avril doesn't have enough time to step back before the next wave reaches her feet. "Oh it is cold… I admit I didn't expect that from Hoenn water." she giggles, getting back onto dry sand. "Maybe we should wait a bit before trying to swim."

"Yeah, it's probably safer that way." Tsu jokes as she starts walking along the shoreline, staying clear of the water itself. "Let's see what we can find over this- huh?"

As she walks, her foot sinks into the sand much more than she'd anticipated. She can feel something soft underfoot, but before she can puzzle out what it is, an electric shock shoots up her leg. She cries out in surprise, before being launched backward and falling on her butt in the sand. "Whoa! Ow… what was that?"

"N-Natsuko!?" Avril calls out, rushing to help her friend out but still clueless about what actually happened to her. "Are you ok?"

"I'm okay! Just got a jolt from something." She accepts Avril's help up, eyeing the patch of sand warily. "Shiny, can you use your Tail Whip to clear away that sand?"

Sunshine steps forward, her fiery tail actually growing in length to reach the ground. She backs up to the patch of sand, whipping her tail to brush away the sand and expose a flat brown fish Pokémon. In retaliation, it spits out a jet of water, striking Shiny in the flank and making her jump in surprise.

Seemingly furious at the wild Pokémon for hurting her playfellow, Poppy crawls out of her little place under Avril's kerchief just in time to fire off a Razor Leaf towards it, hitting on target despite being so much smaller than her opponent.

"Ow…" the blonde girl complained in the meantime, as Poppy did pull her hair and mess up her look in her attempt to float away. "No no no, what are you all doing…" she then hastily muttered, as the situation started to look increasingly similar to a Pokémon battle.

Natsuko looks over at Poppy, still on Avril's head, then at the Stunfisk, who does not look happy. She steps in front of Avril in case Stunfisk tries that again, instructing Shiny to get its attention. "No spitting water! That's just rude! Shiny, use Sunny Day, it'll weaken the water!"

A small bead of light forms in Shiny's mouth, which she then spots out into the air. It hovers above the field for a second, then quickly expands into a shimmering orb the size of a basketball. Despite the heat of the actual sun, the girls and the Pokémon can feel a gentle warmth spreading from the orb.

Stunfisk doesn't like that, and unleashes another jolt of electricity, this time at Shiny. She snorts in annoyance, digging at the sand with her hoof but otherwise not too bothered by the Thunder Shock.

"That's a cool move…" Avril whispers, quite intrigued by the small orb floating somewhere over everyone's head. Poppy, however, doesn't want to lose more time and keeps using Razor Leaf on the Stunfisk from her vantage position. "W-we should just… leave the thing alone, I suppose?" the blonde girl then asks, a slightly worried look on her face.

Tsu looks at her friend, who doesn't want to fight, and her Pokémon, who very much does want to fight. And that Stunfisk doesn't look sorry at all for shocking Tsu or Shiny. "Yeah, but we can't just let this thing go around zapping whoever it wants, can we? We have to defend ourselves, right?"

"Or you could just toss it back in the ocean." A strapping young man comes up from behind the pair. His white t-shirt says "LIFE GUARD" in large, friendly letters, and with his red shorts, sunglasses, and a whistle around his neck, he certainly looks the part. He's carrying a rubber-tipped walking stick, which he jabs under the
Stunfisk, flipping it onto its back. During the scuffle, it had moved away from the water's edge, so he has to get the stick under it again to flip it into the water.

"Sorry to interrupt you ladies and your battle, but these things get mean if you provoke them, so you gotta make it quick. I take safety very seriously." He twirls the stick around in his hand before planting it in the sand, offering the pair a small smile. "Hey. Name's Chadley. You ladies having a good day?"

"Y-yes, it's been great so far! T-thanks for your help there…" Avril smiles, with a hand on her hair to fix up the positioning of her kerchief. Poppy, after being somewhat disappointed that the Stunfisk was gone, just chirps and waves at the lifeguard with a playful grin.

Natsuko kneels beside Shiny, checking her over to make sure she's not hurt. "Did that nasty fish get you all wet and mess up your coat? Aw, Shiny, I'm sorry! Let's get you fixed up." A Potion and a quick brush later, Shiny is feeling healthy as… well, a horse. Happy that her partner is feeling better, Tsu finally acknowledges the lifeguard.

"Thanks for that. I don't think we stood a chance, even with the both of us!" She bows her head respectfully, which the lifeguard nonchalantly waves off.

"Just doing my job. But it's hot out here, especially with that second sun you created. There's a lemonade stand down the beach a bit, why don't we get a drink? I'll protect you from any more Stunfisk."

"Well, that seems like a good idea! I should've known about these… Stunfisk things." Avril giggles, still somewhat clueless about what has happened. "What about you, Natsuko?" she turns to her friend, happy to see that Shiny is feeling better.

"Yeah, a drink does sound good. And I do like lemonade." She takes a moment to consider, then gasps dramatically. "Oh, but if you're escorting us, you won't be able to protect anyone else! I mean, you're the only one with the stick, aren't you?"

Chadley laughs off her concerns. "Not at all! There are plenty more of these things back at the guard shack. You don't-"

"Perfect, then I'll take this one!" Natsuko interrupts, grabbing the walking stick and heading back the way they'd come. "Keep making the beach a safer place! We can handle ourselves from here!"

"Wait what?" Avril gasps, her voice followed by what sounded like a feeble, high pitched battle cry from Poppy. The girl can't help but chuckle at her Pokémon's antics, before trying to get Natsuko's attention again. She calls her name out loud. "You can't do this alone, you said it yourself!" she shouts, before giving in and running after her.

Natsuko lets Avril catch up, idly poking at the sand as they walk. "Can you believe that guy? He was a total creep, and he interrupted our adventure. And he made fun of Shiny! Sunny Day is warm and beautiful!" She seems more grumpy now, but tries to reign in her temper for Avril's sake.

"I don't know, he helped us after all…" Avril mutters, in between heavy breaths. "Ok, he was a bit too smug about it, but…" She looks warily at Natsuko and Shiny, who don't really seem pleased to hear that. "You know, whatever, let's do this. At least let me help a bit in case something bad happens. I-I'll do what I can…"

Natsuko lets out a sigh, then chuckles. "Sure! I think that's the guard shack up there, we can grab another one. And hey, technically, this doesn't count as a battle. We're just sending these little guys home before anyone steps on them!" Avril just nods and smiles, happy to hear that Natsuko is reassuring her, before following her to the shack.

Natsuko leads the way into the guard shack, knocking on the door as she opens it. "Hello, anyone in here?"

There's a *clink* of coins being inserted into a vending machine, then the *rumble thump* of a drink being dispensed. There's a lifeguard inside, a tall woman in a red one piece, who retrieves her bottle of water as she turns to face the pair. "Hi. How can I help you?"

Tsu steps up to do the talking. "We were just looking for the guard shack, so we could pick up another one of these." She presents the walking stick, then hands it to Avril. "There are just so many Stunfisk out there, and we'd feel so much safer if we both had one. And then you lifeguards wouldn't have to worry so much. It's a win-win, really."

The lifeguard sighs, sweeping a lock of blue hair away from her face. "I don't know… it can be kind of dangerous if you don't know what you're doing. Where'd you even get that, anyway?" "Well…" Avril mutters. "We got it from, what was it… Chadley! And he showed us how to use it, as well."

"Chadley, huh? Figures he'd try to recruit more people to do this…" She shrugs and fetches another one from the back, handing it to Natsuko. "We do appreciate the help, and if you want to spend your time doing this, then thank you."

Tsu accepts the walking stick happily, offering a high five to Avril. "Nice! You ready to go?"

"Alright!" the blonde girl exclaims as she accepts the high five, mostly trying to look confident enough in the eyes of the blue haired lifeguard, more than anything else. "Let's get this done!"

"Yeah! Thanks, lady!" Tsu waves to the lifeguard as they leave, who half-heartedly returns the wave, along with a genuine smile.

Tsu heads back to the water's edge, looking for the telltale signs of lurking Stunfisk. She starts poking at the sand almost randomly until she finds one, instructing Shiny to use Tail Whip to expose it. It responds by trying to Tackle her, but Natsuko steps up with the stick. "Not so fast! Get back in your home!" She gets the rubber end under it, flipping it back into the water. Several sparks of electricity fly up as it sinks below the waves, surprising her.

"Wow… that was kinda cool! I kinda forgot they're Electric, too! Aw, I should've had my camera out…" she shrugs and grins at Avril, feeling a little better after getting some revenge for earlier.

After looking at the Stunfisk being thrown into the sea, both amazed and wary, Avril tries to catch onto her friend's words. If she wants a photo of a Stunfisk, then I have to be the one who flips it. Or… she thinks. "I'm sure we'll find another one. Like… here?" the blondie pokes at a suspicious looking pile of sand, but without finding any Pokémon hiding in it. She tries somewhere else. "This may be it. But… a-are you sure I won't mess up?" she asks Natsuko, as Poppy struggles to get a better look.

Natsuko retrieves her phone from her leg pouch, turning it toward Avril. "You'll do great! I was able to do it on accident! I'm pretty sure it's literally impossible to do this wrong."

After carefully placing the rubber tip of her stick under where the Ground type should be, the girl looks once again at her friend. "Ok, here I go!" She then counts to three, Poppy chirping in sync with her, and throws in the air the unaware Stunfisk with all her force. She might not be very strong, but this is more than enough regardless, and the Trap Pokémon is sent flying, before landing in the sea with a big splash. "I… I did it, right?" Avril asks, somewhat surprised of her successful first attempt, as Poppy cheers her up proudly.

Natsuko laughs, having caught the whole thing on video. "Good job, Avril! That was fun, right?"

"Fun? Yes, maybe… but it's also a bit too dangerous for my taste." The blondie sighs. "You didn't look too good before, when Stunfisk hurt you."

"Well… yeah, that didn't feel great, but that happens sometimes, right? That's just life. I get knocked down, but I get up again." She puts her phone away, picking up her walking stick again. "If you want to stop with the Stunfisk, though, I understand."

"Oh no, it's ok!" Avril hastily explains. "I'll still do my best to help you and the other beach goers out! Let's… look for more suspicious piles of sand and show that guy how good we are, right?"

"Yeah! And let's still go to that drink stand! I want that lemonade." They keep going, finding a couple more Stunfisk to flip, and Tsu even hands Avril her phone to record her flipping one herself. Avril tries a couple more times, getting gradually better and more confident. That is, until she messes up a throw.

The Stunfisk she's trying to get into the water notices her stick under it before Avril is ready. It moves to the side, and as a result only gets launched sideways, right onto the blonde girl's foot. She quickly moves away, but not before getting zapped by the Electric type and letting out a yelp. Luckily, she's able to get it right the second time, and throw the Stunfisk away into the water before it's too late: Poppy was already in pole position to start a proper battle.

"Ughhh… I'm so done! I'll just let others save me!" The blondie cries out, clearly trying to catch her friend's attention more than anything else.

"Are you okay?" Natsuko comes over, looking a little concerned. "Alright, we can be done. It's not our job anyway, right? Let's go do something else." She offers to take the walking stick if Avril doesn't want it.

"I-I'm fine now, thank you…" Avril mutters, smiling slightly. "It was scary though. I wonder if it happened to the lifeguards as well, as they learned how to do this…"

"Maybe! Let's go ask them." They decide to go back to the guard shack and return the sticks, staying away from the water so they don't trip over any more Stunfisk. But as they're walking, Natsuko notices a patch of sand shift suspiciously.

"Wait. Did you see that?" She holds out her arm to stop Avril. "Probably another Stunfisk. I'll handle this." The blonde girl looks carefully at where Natsuko pointed, noticing what looks like a red toy shovel. "Uhm, wait, whose is that? Did someone lose that toy?"

Tsu strides forward, walking stick at the ready. "You're pretty far inland, buddy. Did someone bury you? Let's fix that." She drives the stick into the sand, but doesn't hit anything. "Huh?" She pokes around a bit, getting a bit nervous when the sand starts rising.

A small mound of sand rises up, the toy shovel sticking out of the top. Two eyes made of stone and a large mouth form, but Natsuko is too committed to back out now. "Okay, you're not a Stunfisk!" She jabs it with the stick, to absolutely no effect. "Let's not…" a suddenly worried Avril mutters behind her. "Just leave it there!"

"Uh… Shiny? A little help, please!" Shiny charges past Avril, trampling the sand pile under her hooves. But it simply rises again slightly to the left, and a dreadful wail emanates from its mouth as sand starts swirling around Shiny.

"Okay, you're right! Shiny, get out of there!" Natsuko is very worried now. Shiny tries to retreat, but the swirling sand pushes her back toward the evil sand pile. "Alright, then, back in your ball!" She holds out the PokéBall, but the sand blocks the red beam, leaving Shiny in the middle of the raging cyclone.

"I guess I have no choice… Use Flame Charge!" The flames around Shiny's hooves flare up, leaving scorch marks in the sand as she charges the sand Pokémon. It responds by Hardening itself, protecting against further attacks. Shiny flinches in pain as the sand rages around her, and Natsuko can only watch and feel helpless.

Now it's actually Avril's time to step up, no matter how much she could try and deny it. Poppy reminds her by swiftly freeing herself from her trainer's Kerchief and floating above what looks like a Sand Tomb attack now, before firing off a large cone of small, but sharp leaves at Shiny's opponent.

Natsuko looks over at Avril in surprise, then sighs in relief. "Alright, Poppy! Thanks for the assist! Shiny, use Tail Whip to soften it up!" Shiny swishes her tail like she was swatting at flies, knocking off bits of hardened sand from their foe. It responds by opening its mouth, absorbing energy from Shiny as more sand buffets her. After a quick Lucky Chant, Poppy sends some more leaves the Ground type's way.

This is how it is, uh? Avril thinks as she takes some more steps closer to the epicenter of the fight. "Ok, I'm here to help!" She announces, putting Natsuko's safety before the one of that weird Pokémon after realizing what situation her friend got herself in.

Shiny whips her tail again, and gets drained of more energy and smacked with more sand. She stumbles, almost falling but managing to stay up. "Come on, Sunshine, you can do this!" The attack is followed by more Razor Leaf - no need to use other moves when it's already proving to be super effective, right? Plus, Tail Whip only seems to make it stronger for some reason.

With another Tail Whip, the Ground type tries to Harden again, apparently getting concerned, but the Sand Tomb holds strong. Poppy fires more leaves, before trying - with only middling results - to use Fairy Wind and dispel some sand. Avril isn't really in control of Poppy, to be fair: she's mostly telling her to be careful and to stay away from danger. To all the advice, the Flabébé replies with more enthusiastic chirping.

"Shiny can't take much more of this, and I can't pull her out through that sand." Natsuko pulls another PokéBall from her pouch. "But thanks to you two, maybe I won't have to! I'll cut off the sand at the source!" She throws the PokéBall, striking the sandy menace and absorbing it inside.

The ball quivers in place, but the sand still swirls around Shiny, which concerns Natsuko a bit. Then it clicks shut, and the Sand Tomb abruptly collapses. Natsuko immediately runs to Shiny's side, hugging her tightly. "Shiny, I was so worried! But you did great, even when things looked grim!"

She turns to Poppy, trying to hide the tears in her eyes with a big smile. "And Poppy, you were amazing! We couldn't have done this without you!" She suddenly feels very tired, putting a hand on Avril's shoulder for support. "I'm sorry, I should have listened to you. I'll try not to be so reckless from now on."

Poppy bows her head as a sign of gratitude, as Avril smiles at her friend. "It's fine, I'm just happy it all went well. This was probably the best ending there could be!" She cheers, before looking at the Pokèball on the ground. "Whatever that is, I'm sure it was just a bit startled by you. I'm sure you'll become close friends!"

"Oh, yeah, what even is that?" Natsuko picks up the ball, checking her Pokedex. "I guess it's a Sandygast, a Ghost and Ground type from the Alola region. Apparently they're pretty rare."

With that taken care of, the girls make it back to the guard shack, where the same lifeguard from before greets them. "Welcome back. How'd it go out there?"

"Uhm… it was fun!" Avril speaks up, forcing a smile, as Poppy also smiles and chirps. "Well, we got zapped once, but I guess it's part of the job, isn't it?"

"It can be, but it's sort of what we're trying to avoid." She takes the walking sticks back, offering Avril and Natsuko each ₽1000 for their efforts. "Thanks again for doing that. You've helped make the beach safer."

Natsuko accepts the reward, still holding her new PokéBall. "It was nothing. Thank you." Avril does so as well before turning to her new friend. "Oh, you did well! Better than me at least!"

"You didn't do too bad, yourself. Now, let's go get that drink. I could use one!" Natsuko jokes as they head back outside.

    Jordie "Jo" Hughes
    Friday, September 18th
    Chapter 1: Part 2 - Crash

6:00 am to 8 am - Southern Pokémon Center
Jordie gets up as early as usual and prepares themselves for their morning workout. No Gabby, only their music, a bottle of water and them. Since they practically haven't started traveling yet, they should at least go out for a 30 minute jog before heading to the beach; you know, to keep the habit. That's what they do.

Not much happens there, really, just a few people outside either to go to work or for the same reason as them. As they are going back to their room, Jo manages to overhear a conversation between another guy and whoever he is talking to on his PokéGear. Jo can only see him from behind. He has short, brown hair and wears a leather jacket and baggy pants. He doesn't have a Pokémon… no wait, he does, it's like a green slime inside his sleeve… ew!

"... yeah, I'm telling you, man! Two Pokémon. You need two Pokémon to challenge the- holy shit…" he says, desperately touching his jacket in many different spots as if looking for something. "Yeah, yeah, sorry about that, it's just that- What?... Again? I already told you! Two Pokémon for the gym… Yes, that's what I was told… Look, we can do this, but until our licenses are ready, we should be prepared and catch a Pokémon or two, train a bit, battle each other or other people. You know how-"

Jordie doesn't pay attention to the rest of the conversation, they already heard more than enough. The first challenge is a double battle, they conclude, what else could they need exactly two Pokémon for?

There is other thing that makes Jo uneasy, though: Another trainer meant another potential rival, so they have to know him better. 'Keep your friends close and your enemies closer', that has been pretty much Jo's moto on this whole thing since the beginning, and while they considered Avril and Shuna their friends, at least the latter was also their rival and Jo took notes about her too. What Jo catches now, depends on if this guy is more dangerous than Shuna or not.

Jordie goes back to the first floor of the Pokémon Center, acting as if they lost something, just in case that the other guy noticed them before, but in reality they just stand away from him, but close enough to hear him finish his call. Then, Jo starts walking back, fast paced, towards a random room. If their running clothes had pockets, they would use them, for it, but they had to do with it. They wait until they are close enough and purposefully stumbles with their own feet to crash with him. Jordie expected only to crash and say 'Oh sorry' before starting a conversation for it not to feel weird, but both of them lose balance, and it actually helps. The guy falls on his back, and Jordie has to lean against the wall to avoid falling.

"Oh my god, I'm so sorry!" Jordie fakes a concerned expression, rushing to him to help him get up. "I've been… very clumsy since I arrived yesterday. You're not the first person I crash with today and it's still early."

"Uh, never mind… I'm fine I was walking around a lot, it's no surprise something like that happened." he says while getting up. He has a low and grave voice, it's difficult to listen to him correctly and he also seems to be a bit shy since he is avoiding doing visual contact with Jordie.

"So… you're a trainer, uh?" Jordie asks. 'Of course he is, why else would he be here?' they think at first, but then their thoughts change to 'No, this was great. Keep playing the clumsy person role.'

The guy smiles at them, he blushes after making eye contact with Jo and looks away again, shrugging before speaking in a somewhat sarcastic tone. "Y-yeah I think I am. That's why I'm here." He laughs. "I guess you are one too? You look like one."

"Correct. I started my journey yesterday when the ferry from Kinyo got here, so I'm still a bit unfamiliar with the place."

"You are from Kinyo? Cool… Never heard about it." he says a little ashamed and still looking away. "Not that I know much about other regions, though. I wasn't the brightest person in school."

"Uh, no, I'm from Unova. Had to make a stop at Kinyo before getting here." Jo corrects, but talking about them won't tell them what they need to know. Before he can answer (which they don't think he was going to, anyways), Jo asks: "Where are you from, though, uh… friend?"

    "Hui. I'm from Alola."

"Alola? That's cool, indeed!" Jordie answers. "What kind of Pokémon do you have there? I'm interested, in Unova we only have native Pokémon and you rarely see species from other regions."

Hui takes his time to answer. He really isn't the brightest person around, but he finally answers. "It depends on the island I think… In Ula'ula we have Fearow, Ledian, Pancham and-" before he finishes answering, the gooish Pokémon Hui had under his sleeve splatters on the floor. A few drops of the green slime falls on Jordie's shoes and before they could kick them away, they got off, moving like a slug. The green sludge starts piling up, eventually morphing into a green Grimer to which Jordie looks with disgust. "And this. His name is Crash."

"A shiny Grimer? Very cool, really!" Jordie says. They are genuinely amazed this time. They saw a Grimer at the ferry, but it was a normal, purple one. It was also their first time seeing a shiny Pokémon, although they have seen many battles before, however said surprise didn't last enough for them.

"Shiny? No, those are purple." Hui says. For a minute there, Jordie thinks Hui is just confused, then they look back at his Grimer and notices an odd, yellowish coloration no the bottom of its mouth, normal Grimer don't have that. "It's an Alolan Grimer." Hui adds, noticing Jordie's confusion.

    "What's the difference?"

"Other than the color? The typing. Alolan Grimer are Poison types as well, but also Dark types."

"So they only take serious damage from the ground type."

"Correct. Psychic type doesn't affect them anymore, and while that is cool, the fact that-"

"Do you know where to catch Pokémon?" Jordie interrupts. "You see, I was told that the gym only accepts challengers that have at least two."

Hui shrugs. "No idea. The beach, maybe. I heard there were… a lot of Stunky? Sunfish? something like that."

'Stunfisk. A bit pathetic. Not the best thing for a first catch.' they think. Noticing how Hui was looking at them in a weird way, Jordie looks at their X-transceiver and then smiles at him, they already had the information they needed, after all. "Thank you! You see, I'm in a hurry right now. I haven't had any breakfast yet and I need to go before it's over. It's free, after all!" they laugh.

    "Y-yeah I get you, I haven't had breakfast either… W-w-want to come?"

"Oh, no, no! Thank you, but I have to get some things from my room first. I might take my time, so go ahead!" the trainer answers. They thought it was kinda cute how he blushed when he asked them to go, but that was it, and Jordie also had to plan stuff with Gabby. Only one catch per location were the rules in Hoenn, or so they remember. "It was… nice knowing you, Hui. I believe we'll meet each other again."

"Maybe. Uh… well, bye… you never told me your name."

"Jordie Hughes. You can call me Jo, though." You'll have to memorize it, you'll hear it a lot, after all. They think, but hopefully managed not to say it.
    "Gabby girl, I'm home!"

Gabby chirps cheerfully while she floats to her trainer the moment Jo goes through the door. Jordie pets her a bit and while they get ready to take a shower the ask: "Did you miss me? Did you behave?" to which Gabby answers with multiple nods. "Good. We are going to the beach today. We'll relax a bit, but we also have training to do, don't forget. We have to catch a Ground type today."

    Slateport Beach

It's bright and sunny, the beach goes on for miles, and people and Pokémon alike are having a good time. And Edison is bored. He'd spent time relaxing, then sought out and defeated a rare but apparently dangerous Pokémon, and now he has no idea what to do. He walks along the beach, alone, starting to regret not going with Sunny. Energetic and sassy as she is, at least she was someone to talk to.

But there is one area where almost no one is going: the sandbars and tide pools of the shallow water. Most people are sticking to the dry land or going out to the deeper water for swimming, boating, or surfing. Curious, Ed goes for a stroll, noting that the water doesn't even touch his shorts. It's high enough to make walking slightly more difficult and therefore slower, but that's no deterrent to a determined scientist! Neo follows along behind him, their movement speed unaffected as they hover over the water.

The ocean is certainly beautiful to look at, but by rummaging through the sand underfoot, Ed finds interesting shells and shiny rocks, worn smooth by water and time. Neo detects motion nearby, but doesn't see anything when they turn to investigate. While Ed is distracted by rocks and shells, they begin looking around for signs of Pokémon.

Ed notices Neo's behavior, especially when they keep looking behind them, gently scooping them up to look them over. "What's going on?" Neo's eye keeps looking around the area. "Perhaps the ocean is causing problems with your proximity sensor? It is motion activated, so we'll probably just need to calibrate that. Use Supersonic to scan the area, thought ought to clear things up."

Neo sends out a low frequency pulse, and to Ed's surprise, a flashing light below the surface answers it! "Hello, what's this?" He brings up his Holotch scanner, moving closer to scan the source of the light: a golden-brown star shaped Pokémon clinging to a rock. "Hello, what are you? A Staryu, eh? N.D., were you perhaps detecting this?"

Neo floats closer, and the Staryu detaches itself from the rock with surprising speed, its core glowing as a wave of unseen force bursts forth, striking Neo. They remain unfazed, but now there's a battle.

"That was Psywave..." Ed's seen the move before. "Very well, use Thunder Wave!" Neo aims both magnets forward, sending out a low amperage blast that washes over Staryu, causing it to lock up. "That should slow it down. Go for Shock Wave next!"

To Ed's surprise, Staryu jumps up, landing on two of its appendages and pointing the topmost one at Neo. A stream of water erupts from the tip, striking Neo full on. Neo's armor is impressive, but it's not water resistant. "It's so fast..." Fast as it is, it's not faster than light, and the blue laser Neo fires from their eye hits without fail.

"Perfect aim, as always, N.D.! Use Shock Wave again!" Staryu tries to move, but its limbs are locked up in paralysis. Neo lines up the shot, firing another precise shot of electricity. "And now, I believe a Thunder Shock will suffice."

Staryu's core flashes green, and a soft light emanates from the core. Checking his Holotch, Ed identifies the technique as Recover, and is amazed as the Pokémon heals its wounds with its own power. As such, Neo's lower power jolt fails to knock it out as Ed intended. "Fascinating! Neo, another Shock Wave!"

In a moment of deja vu, Staryu fires a blast of Water Gun at Neo, who responds with another blue laser. Ed notices a red light within Staryu's core start blinking, holding up a hand to forestall Neo's attack. "Hold off, N.D. I think I'd like to study this one some more." He pulls a PokéBall from his pocket, tossing it at Staryu. The ball strikes the paralyzed echinoderm, pulling it inside. The ball shakes once, then clicks shut. Ed goes to recover the ball as his Holotch registers Staryu to his Trainer card.

"Star-shaped, with a gem-like core, brings to mind asterism, so perhaps... wait, what's this?" Scanning Staryu's vitals reveals that they are no longer paralyzed. He sends Staryu back out, noticing the still blinking light in their core, but they otherwise seem to have no difficulty moving. "This calls for an experiment... Aster, would you kindly use Recover?"

The Staryu, apparently now named Aster, is happy to oblige, healing their wounds with that same green energy. "Fascinating! And Neo, use Thunder Wave on them, please."

Aster looks at Ed in surprise, but Neodymium responds without hesitation, sending out the paralyzing low amp pulse. Aster locks up again, paralyzed. Edison observes them, but can detect no change. "Perhaps the ball?" He returns Aster to their PokéBall, and as the red beam strikes, there is a flash of green from Aster's core. Checking again, Aster is no longer paralyzed!

"Ha-ha! Success! It appears that interacting with the PokéBall's digitization energy creates a synergistic effect with their natural curative properties! Truly fascinating. Don't worry, my new friend, I won't be testing that ability of yours any further, but I'm sure it will be useful in the future." He starts making his way back to shore, looking for Sunny so he can show her his new capture.

    Emilio Estéban Grácia
    077GMS.png

    Location: Slateport Hotel

"I know that, ma… N… no, I know, but he sure as hell doesn't show it."

Inside a cheap hotel room paced Emilio, backpack and beanie having been tossed to the foot of the bed. His messenger bag had been gently placed by the pillows, the one pokéball nestled inside in the small crater he had created with a single push of his fist on to rectangular, dirty white pillow.

With a distraught voice the young man argued with his mother, free hand gesturing confusion yet annoyance. "No, ma. It isn't okay for him to do tha- no. I know, but… okay. Bye." That familiar tone of a call ending echoed as his hands wrapped themselves around the device. He begins to jab the edge of the pokégear against his forehead, a scrunched up face doing its best to withhold a scream. A minute of this resulted in him releasing a bellow of rage, defeated yet refusing to give in to his mother's pleas to return home.

He had only just begun. He cannot give in. Yet.

He sits on the bed and feels his back plop against its thick bedding, spread out extremities sinking into the fabric. The bag tilted and landed on its side while the pokéball resting next to it rolled down the pillow, skimming Emilio's left arm before reaching his neck. And like a burning metal he flinched and shot up, now glaring at the filthy, brown carpet. Steadily the pokéball rolled towards his waist due to his weight pushing down on the bed's blanket.

"...I can't. I don't want to see your damn- ugh." Emilio debated against himself, hands massaging his temples with eyes closed to quell an emerging headache. "How do I even… begin?" A sigh escaped his lips. He groaned as he reached for the pokéball, fingers hesitating upon grazing the spherical capsule. Inside a galarian ponyta awaited their release.

He stood back up. "Let's just get this over with." Quickly he snatches the pokéball and presses its button. Immediately he felt weak to the knees, chest tightening and cold in anticipation of his aunt's companion; she never left the cute thing alone.

His hands clutched the pokéball against his chest amidst the galarian ponyta's escape, regret and guilt building at an unprecedented rate. And as the red lightshow melted away to reveal the psychic-type pony beneath, his being began to slightly tremble.

The gleeful expression on the horse upon seeing the familiar man soon transformed into that of a worried one, eyes watching as the pokéball was dropped. His hands now clamped his mouth as a futile attempt to swallow the grief he now attached to the pokémon, yet the stinging that came with incoming tears forced him into the small bathroom nearby.

Ponyta yelped when the door slammed shut. The unfamiliar surroundings began to scream at the horse, puzzling and worrying her. Nothing, not even Emilio's distraught reaction, had been seen before.

Regardless, the ponyta felt pity, cautiously approaching the dark mahogany door, artificial yellow light from inside leaking out the bottom and top. She sat next to the doorhandle, away from the door's range.

Muffled sobbing could be heard, followed by the sudden opening of the door. Out came Emilio, irritated eyes and somewhat wet cheeks signaling to the pony that he was in no good state. It took him a moment to process that his companion was not standing in the same exact spot as before, thus why she was startled when Emilio gasped and scanned the room several seconds after having stared into the wall. When he found her next to him relief consumed his panic-stricken body, shoulders relaxing as he crouched to her level. The door awkwardly squealed as it pulled itself into a wider opening.

He gulps, teeth biting his tongue before his eyes rested on ponyta's own. "Heeey. It's been a while, hm?" Wanting to help him ease out of the peril he is feeling, she displays glee. With ears upright and front hooves tapping the carpet, she uttered a high-pitched neigh.

Unfortunately he felt another round of tears welling up, yet instead of fleeing into the restroom he slapped his hands on to his knees and stood. His ponyta followed him to the bed, observing him retrieve several granola bars from his messenger bag before sitting on the poofy bedding. This caused her own stomach to rumble, yet he did nothing to bring this fact to Emilio. On the contrary, she gently picked a bar with her chalk-white teeth, head nestling between his legs and tilting upward to hand it over.

He snickered, hand plucking it from her mouth. "Thanks, but don't do that. I can do that, see?" he explained, slowly grasping one firmly before opening the same hand, dropping the bar down to lay with the rest. With that he proceeded to unwrap the peanut butter and chocolate delight.

Somewhat happy, the galarian pokémon laid down beneath him, laying her beautiful head on his dirty sneakers. "No!" he suddenly blurts, startling the pony into a sitting position. "Don't do that, they're dirty." Despite her understanding and smile he felt a twinge of guilt, sighing before stroking behind her ears. Seeing her eyes close and hearing her satisfied hum slightly uplifted his spirits.

He felt a little better now.

"I feel bad. Sorry. I'm just… well, you already know me, right?"

    Jordie "Jo" Hughes
    Friday, September 18th
    Chapter 1: Part 3 - New Friends

10:25 am to 10:45 am - Slateport Beach
Jordie found a lemonade stand not too far into the beach. They are sitting there, with their floppy straw hat and new sunglasses, with Gabby by their side wearing her new sunglasses as well. They have been there not much time, really, just looking at the prices of the many lemonades there -the Fizzy Ginger one does seem to be pretty good-, but honesty the prices aren't too much of Jordie's liking, they totally have enough to buy one or two, but that would leave them with even less money. Still, not as if they regret spending almost everything in the Market yesterday.

Jo looks back at the ocean, a lot of kids running, people swimming. The waves aren't really big enough to try surfing, but that's fine, they won't have too much time for it anyways. It is then, when the trainer looks back at Gabby, that they notice she was looking behind them as if she saw… anyone but Jordie, before trying to hide in front of them just to be stopped by the wooden counter.

Natsuko arrives at the lemonade stand, excited to try it after all the talk. "Whoo, it is hot today!" She says to no one in particular, looking at the menu. "What kind of drinks do they sell?"

Avril, who has been two or three steps behind the whole time, this time has better things to take care of than answer her friend. "I suppose berry juices and… wait." She cuts off her answer mid sentence, only to walk closer to Jo. After all, the bright green hair is too hard to overlook. "Hello there! You're at the beach too!"

"Avril, my sweetheart!" Jordie says, actually surprised to see her at the beach. "No wonder Gabby was a bit nervous… I didn't expect to find you here. How are you doing so far?"

"It's alright, thanks!" The blonde girl smiles. "I've also met a new friend, and… we've agreed to come here together. Right, Natsuko?"

"That's right!" Natsuko turns her attention to Avril's friend. "People have been telling us about this place all day, so we figured 'why not?' I'm Natsuko, nice to meet you!"

"Jordie. You can call me Jo, though. And this shy girl behind me is Gabby. Nice to meet you as well!"

Sunshine comes up beside Jo, sniffing at Gabby curiously. The little Ponyta had never seen a Solosis before. Gabby tries to back off from the Ponyta, and finally moves under the stool her trainer is sitting in, Jordie laughs at her.

At that point, how could Poppy not join in all the fun? She once more tries to slip out of Avril's bandana, but her trainer stops her in time. "Sorry, but I don't think it's a good time to play with Gabby, she's a bit shy as you saw." She explains, as Poppy just stands still and pouts. "And… Gabby, right? Cool sunglasses you have!"

"They are, right!?" Jordie intervened "She chose them herself. With my help of course! We bought a lot of stuff at the Market yesterday as you may know. Did you go there already?"

"We did, but I don't think Avril got that much." Natsuko points to her new hat. "I had to pick up a new swimsuit and hat for today. I plan on going back later, though. There was still a bunch of stuff I'd like to look for!"

"I didn't buy anything at all, don't you remember? But to be fair I had already got some stuff when I was ferry hopping, like this bandana. I'll probably go back if I have enough money left, though." Avril explains, giggling. "The seals look so cool!"

"They are! And there are many of them and aren't too expensive! If you really decide to be a coordinator you could find a good use for them!"

"I hadn't thought of that. I guess it could be interesting, though." It was good to meet someone as friendly as Jo, and they already have so much to talk about. "Here's an idea! I actually just caught my first Pokémon, so let's celebrate! Drinks are on me, what do you say?"

"I like it! Sure! I was actually waiting for someone to invite me for a drink." Jordie jokes.

"Well, that's a great idea!" Avril gushes. "Thank you, Natsuko."

"My pleasure! And hey, you can return the favor after you catch yours!" She jokes, turning her attention back to the menu. "I was just expecting a basic lemonade stand, but these guys go all out! So many flavors…"

"I know, I've been looking at the menu for a while now." Jordie says "I'm more inclined to the Fizzy Ginger one, it looks so good. But on the other hand… I've had berry lemonade before as well… It's hard to choose, but I guess I'll go with Fizzy Ginger."

"There are so many enticing flavors…" Avril chuckles. "But this? Never seen before! Red berries lemonade you say? I'm in!"

"What can I say, I like sweet stuff, but I'm a sucker for mint." Natsuko shrugs, grinning unapologetically. "So I'll go for the Watmel-Mint lemonade."

The man running the stand stayed quiet while they debated, but once he had all their orders, he set to making them. It was kind of entertaining to watch, and he was clearly practiced at his craft. He slides each Trainer their respective drinks, and Natsuko hands over payment. "Thank you very much!"

Jordie takes a sip of their lemonade. The feeling of the soda in their mouth combined with the sweet and spiciness of the lemonade was… "This is pretty good! How's yours, girls? They also do look very good!"

Natsuko takes a long sip of her melonade, actually shivering a little as she does. "Ooh, it's sweet, and it's cool! This was a good idea!"

"As I said, it's unlike anything else, but…" Avril laughs, trying to look like a picky food expert. "This is amazing! Right, Poppy?" She asks her Pokémon, who is now perched on the table. The only way she could drink was by nearly submerging her head in the drink, but she didn't mind: by the looks of it, it was actually totally worth the effort!

Jo laughs at how Poppy had to drink, sadly Gabby isn't a fan of sweet stuff so they can't try something similar, not that she wants to leave her place under the stool, either. Jordie then looks at Natsuko who is pulling her cup away from Shiny. The little Ponyta had drank half the cup already. She'd said she caught something before, right? Maybe they have to keep an eye on her too. "So… Nat. Can I call you Nat?"

"Huh?" Distracted by Jo, Natsuko doesn't realize Shiny drinking more of the lemonade. "I'd rather you didn't. You can call me Tsu, if you like. What's up? ...hey, no more!" She pushes Shiny's head away from her, determined to keep what's left of her drink to herself.

"Understood, Tsu. You said you caught something before. What was it?"

"Well… it's a Sandygast." She debates pulling it out, but decides against it. "It used Sand Tomb, so I couldn't just run away, even though Shiny was having a hard time fighting it. Luckily, Avril helped me out, so I was able to catch it!"

"Hey, it was Poppy doing all the work!" Avril laughs, while Poppy buffs her chest and nods proudly. "But I'm glad you were able to catch it!"

Jordie smiles at Avril now, lowers their sunglasses a bit and says: "So you actually battled, uh? How was it? How did it feel?"

"I said I didn't do anything… I just looked at Poppy fending for herself and yes, she did well!" Avril shrugs. "You know how it is, you start feeling sorry for your opponent, but then it starts hitting you hard and you wonder if you're even doing the right thing. And… my heart…"

"If it makes you feel any better, I couldn't have done it without you." Natsuko tries to comfort Avril. "Think of how much Shiny would have been hurt if not for Poppy."

The blondie breathes heavily as she tries to process. "G-guess you're right." She mutters, reaching for Flabébé. "But I just don't want Pokémon to get hurt. And if the wild Pokémon don't get this, we're better off avoiding them, right?"

While Jo at first thought Avril could also become a threat for them, she hasn't changed her way of thinking despite the recent events, so maybe they don't have to think too much about it for now. Still, Jordie can't help but feel a bit concerned for their friend. "Maybe. If you can avoid danger, that is. It won't hurt to teach your Pokémon how to defend themselves either."

Just like the previous day, Jo was giving good advice, and just like the previous day, Poppy was gushing. She really picked a good, confident trainer to introduce to Avril! And meeting them again was probably the right way to go. "You know already but, that's good advice Jo! Maybe…" The Laverre girl thinks for a moment. "Maybe there's another way. Guess I'll find out more as we keep traveling and staying in touch!"

"Well, how about we stick together for a bit, then?" Tsu finishes her drink, putting the empty glass on the counter. "It's still a nice day, and it's kinda lonely by yourself. We could hang out here for a bit, go for a walk, what do you say?"

"Seems like a good idea." Jo nods, taking another sip of their lemonade. "Gabby would like to take a… walk. Right, Gabby girl?" Jordie looks under their seat and sees a still very shy Gabby that repeatedly exchanges glances with the other trainers and their respective Pokémon. "You already know Avril and Poppy, it will be fun! You want to go?" Gabby leaves her hideout and stares at Sunshine for a few seconds, she floats closer to the Ponyta and examines her for a bit and Sunshine sniffs at her, then Gabby does the same thing with Tsu, who merely offers a friendly wave. Gabby turns to her trainer and nods.

Avril looks at Gabby with interest, before agreeing to the other trainers' suggestion with a smile. "Yes! We still have to go for a swim, right Tsu?"

"I'm still up for it, but I think Shiny might sit that one out."

"Well, maybe she can play with Gabby or Poppy so she doesn't get bored!" Jo proposes "Gabby likes the water, but this would be the first time she visits an actual beach, so I'm sure she won't be there too much time. Not sure about Poppy, though."

"Poppy… she just floats above the water, of course!" Avril laughs. "But she won't mind playing on the beach with your Pokémon, right?" She doesn't have to wait long before getting a chirp of approval. "And there should be nothing wrong with taking some time off the journey for ourselves to enjoy, too!"

"You are totally right, Avy girl! We are visiting another region, after all. Might as well explore and have fun while we can!"

    Chapter 1 #04 - Unsolicited Advice

Her first job is…. not exciting.

Mostly she's sitting in the box office at the contest hall selling tickets. Which is mostly fine, but she's not allowed to have Tuie or Stunnie out. And Marie just has to… sit here. With some strangers who are way older than her and not really interested in talking to her aside from telling her to do stuff. Or not do stuff. Like not wear her bandana, because it's "not professional". Even though it's hot in this little booth and her hair is thick and now she's sweaty. Ugh.

It's really something when you're counting down the minutes until you're allowed to go mop floors.

She get that done quickly, at least. Perhaps not well, but she's got $6,000 in hand and is bouncing out the door before anyone can check. $6,000 for four hours isn't bad at all! And now she can get a nice lunch, maybe from one of the market stalls… eat down at the beach… maybe see if Miss Mermaid is working. Maybe help flip more Stunfisk.

Or maybe train, like a trainer should.

    That's a better idea.

There's a park with a few fountains behind the northernmost Pokémon Center. A few people are out here with her, some just relaxing but others actively training like she intends to. Some glance over as she releases Tuie and Stunnie, but Marie isn't concerned about them. She's concerned about the fact that she's had this Pokémon for nearly a day and really hasn't interacted with him much at all.

Tuie flutters onto her shoulder. Stunnie flops himself into a fountain with a sploosh and stares at Marie through the clear water. She stares back at him.

    "So… how are you?"

Stunnie clacks his beak. Tuie copies him. Marie taps her foot.

"Okay, let's… establish things. I'm Marie. I caught you. This is Tuie. I've been calling you Stunnie in my head, so that's your name now."

Stunnie crackles with electricity, expression unchanging. "Yeah, like that. Okay. What else do you do?"

Marie hops out of the way as a ball of mud splatters where she was standing, but there's no way to avoid the deluge of mud that drenches her and Tuie both, and with the mud in her eyes there's no dodging the blast of water that leaves her dripping from head to toe.

"Oh, you little-!" Marie's lunge at her annoying fish is interrupted by a snicker from behind.

"Hey, hey, you caught a prankster, huh?"

"So it seems," Marie answers through gritted teeth, glaring at her Pokémon and turning to face this springy-haired interloper, who doesn't seem to care that she's in a bad mood. "You want to do something about it?"

"I'm on break," they claim, as if Marie knows what their schedule is or what they're on break from, "but earlier I saw people training on the beach! The lifeguards don't care if you battle down there and there are lots and lots of Staryu to find! They're a much much better match for your Stunfisk than your Natu would be. And, and! You could practise a double battle! Cause you're challenging the gym, right? You're gonna need to practise!"

    "That's rude," Marie huffs.

    They grin mischievously. "But true!"

Ugh. They're right, but people sticking their noses where they don't belong rubs the wrong way. Marie grabs Stunnie by the tail and drags him out of the fountain, letting him dangle at her side as she walks away.

"See ya later!" The person calls. Marie groans. She hopes not.

    Chapter 1: Part 2 - Maritza White

18:00 to 18:20 - Northern Pokémon Center Entrance
Miranda is startled at the sudden call from an unknown acute voice, though not as acute as hers. She quickly grabs her bat's grip as a first reflex and Mankey does a backwards flip before taking a fighting position by her side, but both of them calm down the moment they see a girl of about the same age as Miranda.

She has gray hair, pale skin and somewhat reddish eyes. She also has a small mole under each one of her eyes that make her look weird, but somewhat cute as well. She wears a pair of white gloves that hold an equally white umbrella on one hand and Miranda's P★DA on the other one. The girl looks at her with a concerned look after seeing Miranda acting up, and a little intimidated as well by the way she is looking at her.

"I- I apologize! I didn't mean to startle you that way." she says and shows her the P★DA "I just saw this on the floor, and thought it was yours. I thought that maybe you didn't want to lose it."

    "Who the hell are you!?"

"Oh, y-you're right! Please excuse my manners. My name is Maritza White, from Hammerlocke, Galar." She answers. "I got here today to become a trainer."

    "You don't have any Pokémon."

"Oh, I do! But Juggernaut's PokéBall is in my room at the Pokémon Center. I don't like to take him out for a walk much, he gets startled easy and likes to run away." Maritza clarifies. "But, please, enough about me. How about you? This is a Pokémon Digital Assistant, so I assume you are from Orre."

"It's called a P★DA." the grumpy girl answers.

"Yeah, P★DA stands for Pokémon Digital-" Maritza looks at the other girl to her eyes, and terrified by the way she looks at her, she gives up explaining. "Never mind… But you are from Orre, right? Are you here for the gym challenge as well?"

Miranda doesn't answer. Why does this girl even care? Maybe she wants something? Yes, that's totally it. No other reason for someone to talk to a total stranger, the P★DA thing was bullshit!

The brunette takes her bat and gets up, she starts walking away and Mankey follows her, but he gray haired girl stops her. "Hey, wait!"

Miranda looks back and sees Maritza walking slowly at her and looking at the screen of her P★DA.

"This is the Hoenn Ranger Database! You are here to become a trainer too!" she yells excitedly. Looking at her so cheerful as she speaks non-stop gives Miranda the urge to punch her. Why can't she shut the fuck up!? She doesn't care what she says! She doesn't even know her! "Did you already plan what you were going to catch?"

"I-" That was an interesting question… she didn't have the answer for, and that didn't put her in a good mood. Miranda took her P★DA back with no need to rush to violence, somehow, and gave another look at it. How did the other girl even realize it was the Ranger That's Ablaze -how could she even memorize a name so stupid? "Why do you ask me that? Why do you even care?"

"Well… I'm curious." Maritza answers. "I think you are rather… interesting, to say the least. Not everyone carries a baseball bat on a journey or dresses like a baseball player when they attempt to travel around Hoenn. Are you a baseball player?"

"No." She doesn't even know how to play, these are just the only clothes she had that she likes.

"Oh. So it's just aesthetics. That's cool, yeah."

"Why do you dress like a…" Miranda starts asking, already feeling annoyed by her, but stops once she realizes she doesn't even know too much about clothing either! "Why do you wear a vest on a Pokémon Journey!? And a tie!? And a brown shirt? And a-"

    "Khaki."

    "What?"

"Brown is the dark, chocolate-like colour." she explains "Khaki is a more yellowish tone. Kind of like dust."

    "Who cares!?"

"And you are right, I shouldn't be wearing vests, shirts and ties when I'm traveling," she ignores, "but they were the only clothes I had and I'm used to them…"

Miranda feels her head spinning. It hurts. There is so much shit she doesn't understand because this girl can't stop talking. Her day really did take a turn for the worst the moment she stepped into the gym.

"... I personally like khaki above any other colour, but my mother has always told me I look better dressed in black and whites, but I think that's very-"

"Shut up!" Miranda finally yells, smashing the ground with her bat, and scaring the hell out of Maritza in the process. "You are annoying! Why are you even talking to me!? I don't even know who you are! Can you at least tell me what the fuck do you want!?"

Maritza exhales all the air she had inside the moment Miranda shouted at her. The brunette actually expects her to get nervous, or to start crying. None of those happen aside from the initial startle, not even tearful eyes come from her and if she is nervous or scared, she also does a pretty good job hiding it.

"That's an interesting reaction… Really!" She jokes, because she has to be joking. What kind of reaction did she even expect? "Well, I already told you what I wanted. I wanted to give you your Pokémon Digital Assistant, firstly, and secondly, since I saw you had the Ranger Database Application, know if you had an idea of what you wanted to catch. The first battle is a double battle; since you are from Orre you should be familiar with them, so you'll need more than your Mankey."

"What does the Pokémon I catch have to do with the Ranger app?" Miranda asks, knowing that she won't be able to get rid of Maritza and taking advantage of the fact that she actually cared to explain.

"Oh, you aren't familiar with it yet? In Hoenn, trainers can catch only certain species of Pokémon that are listed on the Hoenn Ranger Database, anything that isn't there is an illegal catch and catching those would give you trouble." the gray haired girl explains. "It was all well detailed in the Journey Hoenn booklet I read on the ferry."

"Journey Hoenn…?" she heard that name before, before Mankey's apple show took place, but she didn't even care enough about it for obvious reasons. "I… I don't think I read it."

"I can teach you how to use the application!" Maritza offers "If you want to, of course. I don't want to bother you too much."

Miranda looks at the girl with bewilderment. She doesn't want to accept, but it's definitely a better option than having to enter the Pokémon Center again, and ask the receptionist for help. A second thought passes through the girl's mind before accepting: How would Maritza react once she finds out she doesn't know how to read? She'll laugh, probably, everyone does, but for some reason it seemed as if it will be different this time. Not that she would get her hopes up, though. "... Sure." she finally says, but isn't too confident about it.

Maritza walks to Miranda's right side, hand where she is holding the P★DA. "I practiced this more than enough while I was on the ferry, so you are in good hands." she says. By the way she smiles, Miranda can tell she is very proud of herself for it and is also very excited. Maritza then points at the screen. There are a lot of buttons with words she doesn't know. "Okay, let's start with the basics: This is the Homepage. The many buttons you see here would take you somewhere else depending on what you choose. Let's say… 'Commentaries and Notes'. Choose that one." she waits for Miranda to tap the screen, but her brain is turned off. She doesn't know what to do… at all. "Commentaries and Notes" is a long name, so she chooses exactly the one with the lengthiest name and a page with Pokémon names -she knows they are Pokémon names because Mankey is there and she knows how to write it, there are also pictures of each- appear, each name has a speech bubble on its right followed by numbers. "That's right. This is the comment section. Pokémon Rangers and Trainers usually make comments about the Pokémon they find here -though they are usually done by Rangers since Trainers commentaries are moderated. Anyways, to go back to the Homepage, tap on the house over there." Miranda does that, and she is back, indeed. "Now go to… hmmm 'Locations'" another word Miranda doesn't know. This time she doesn't even have a way to get away with it, it's not a long name and none of the buttons that have Pokémon on them are lengthier or shorter than what she heard. Miranda starts sweating, and holds tight the grip of her bat again, making Mankey get on guard. "... are you okay?"

    "I… I don't…" she says ashamed. "I don't know how to read."

"... oh, that is..." before Maritza could finish her sentence, she puts a hand on her mouth and fakes a cough. She is laughing at her, as she expected. Mankey starts jumping and screeching and Miranda wants to punch her too. Punch her and run away, but then Maritza falls on her knees, dropping her umbrella. She keeps coughing… harder. She is in pain. She wasn't faking it. Miranda's rage disappear and she is filled with concern now. She doesn't know what to do. Call someone, or help her get up? She sees Maritza clumsily trying to pick up her umbrella, and Miranda helps her with it. Maritza coughs for a few more seconds and then she finally calms down. She pulls out a handkerchief from her vest and cleans her mouth with it and asks for Miranda to help her get up, which she does. "... I-I'm sorry."

"What was that?" Miranda asks concerned. Looking back at Mankey, she realizes that he also got scared.

"I… have a lung problem. Breathing and coughing. It comes when you least expect it." she answers putting her handkerchief away and then laughs. "But enough about it. Where was I...?" Maritza takes her time to regain her composure and recall what she was saying before her coughing attack. "...oh, right. You don't know how to read. That's going to be a problem."

Miranda doesn't answer, just grips tighter on her bat.

"... Maybe… I can help you learn." she proposes.

Genuinely surprised by that, Miranda doesn't know how to answer. She can't help but think that deep inside, Maritza is making fun of her, but… This is difficult. She already made it clear that she is patient enough to teach her basic stuff even after how she shouted at her. It was her best chance, but... God, she is so annoying!

"You gotta be shitting me…" she says "... Right?"

"No, not at all. You see… I need someone to travel with as well. My respiratory handicap limits me a lot and I have an overall weak body." she says. "You seem to be tough… and caring. So I teach you how to read, and you have my back in exchange. It's a win/win situation."

    "Will we travel together, then?"

"I also have Juggernaut to protect me, but until he evolves… yes." she says. "Of course you don't have to follow me all the time, we can go separate ways some days, but would be good if we meet each other in most routes and at least once or twice per town."

"Well then…" Miranda starts walking south, even if she doesn't know where she is going exactly. She notices no one other than Mankey with her, so she turns around. "Hey, girl. You coming?"

She smiles. It's a gentle and nice smile, honestly. "Let me pick up Juggernaut's ball and let's finish with the application tutorial first…" She says before entering the Pokémon Center.

    Friday, September 18th
    Slateport Beach

Flipping Stunfisk had seemed fun at first, but it quickly lost its appeal. Sunny now sees why the lifeguards are so willing to pass this duty off to others. And worst of all, she can't find the lifeguard to return his stick, or Eddie to hang out with. Sure, he would probably ramble on about something geeky she wouldn't understand, but he's still her best friend.

She doesn't even have the heart to flip the next Stunfisk properly, just leaving it exposed on the sand. "Go on, scram." It puffs up a bit, probably trying to intimidate her, but she just smacks it on the head with the stick, sending it flopping back into the water. "I said scram. I'm not in the mood."

Rather than stay grumpy, she goes to get herself a snack, heading back up to the food trucks by the road. One of them is selling frozen treats, and soon she's happily munching on an orange and vanilla ice cream bar. As she strolls along, part of a conversation catches her attention.

"...fun of Shiny! Sunny Day is warm and beautiful!" "I don't know..."

Sunny pauses, positive that it's just a coincidence, but she laughs at the unintentional compliment. And then she sees the guy! The same lifeguard from earlier!

"Hey!" She runs over to him, handing him back his walking stick. "Chadley, right? Thanks for letting me do this, it was fun! For a little while."

He seems reluctant to take the stick back, but does so anyway. "No problem, babe. Felt good, right? Doing your part to keep the beaches safe and help those Pokémon return home?"

"For a little bit, yeah. But I'd get super bored doing it all day."

"Tell me about it!" Chadley laughs. "But hey, we lifeguards are allowed to offer a reward to anyone donating their time and energy to Stunfisk patrol. What do you say, can I buy you a drink?"

"Ooh, tempting..." Sunny thinks it over for a moment. "But I'll pass. I actually just got something, so I'm okay for now."

Chadley nods, reaching into his pocket. "I get it. Then instead, I can offer you a monetary reward of equal value, and my number." He hands her a ₽500 bill and a folded piece of paper.

"Alright, Chadley." Sunny accepts both items. "That was well played. Maybe I'll talk to you later."

"Looking forward to it." His teeth don't actually sparkle when he smiles at her, but Sunny wouldn't be surprised if they did. "But for now, I am needed elsewhere. Have a good day!"

Sunny keeps moving, heading in the opposite direction than she did earlier. The beach is still very pretty, and she doesn't mind seeing more of it. There are a lot of people here, too, and some of them can be interesting. A lot of small swimsuits, apparently shorts aren't as popular as she thought...

She soon notices someone with a very distinctive hair style walking through the water. It's Eddie! She'd recognize that spiky blond mop anywhere, and calls out to him. He looks around a bit before he sees her, but she can swear he smiles a bit when he finally does.

He starts making his way over to her, but almost slips as he gets out of the shallows. He jumps back quickly, certainly faster than Sunny's ever seen him move, just as a Stunfisk releases a jolt of electricity. Someone less perceptive would probably have been zapped, but not Ed.

Sunny briefly regrets not having a stick anymore, but decides to see how this plays out. Eddie was never excited to battle, but she always liked watching him. She gets closer as she sees Neo move up to engage.

Ed starts off with Supersonic, which Sunny kind of expected. It's one of his favorite moves, after all. Stunfisk is too confused to retaliate properly, so it was a good opening move. "Alright, N.D., let's try a Magnet Bomb!"

That's new! When did Neo learn that? Sunny watches as a small panel above Neo's eye slides open, and a small metal orb is launched from within. It flies straight toward Stunfisk, guided by Neo's magnetism, detonating on impact. As cool as it looked, Stunfisk looks more annoyed than hurt, and scoops up then flings wet sand at Neo using Mud Slap.

Eddie frowns at that, rubbing his chin with one hand. He always does that when he's really thinking. He moves his hand to his shirt pocket, pulling out a PokéBall. He glances over at Sunny, then pulls a different PokéBall from his pocket. What's that about?

Ed recalls Neo, and Addie takes their place. Stunfisk flops about in confusion, giving Addie time to wind up his Metronome. Stunfisk spits water at Addie, but the little guy barely feels it. His little hands glow white...

    Here it comes!

...then the energy travels to his head, and he opens his mouth wide to unleash a Hyper Beam! Stunfisk is caught full in the blast and goes flying! The beam carves a shallow trench through the sand, startling several people and getting the attention of everyone nearby.

"Oh. That's... unconventional." Ed seems to be at a loss for words, so Sunny knows he's just as surprised as everyone else.

"Woo! Good job, Eddie! That was awesome!" Sunny cheers, running over to give a big hug to Addie. She tries to pick him up, but he's heavier than he looks. For his part, Addie looks exhausted, so Sunny just pats his head and puts an arm around Ed's shoulders. "We should go. Right now. Come on."

"Oh, hello, Sunny." Ed returns Addie to his ball. "I've had quite the day, let me tell-"

"Shh, no talking." Sunny starts walking, ready to drag him if she has to. "Just move. Please walk. Let's get the hell out of here."

To his credit, Ed doesn't argue. He matches her pace, which is quicker than normal despite her attempt to look casual. "Did you have fun at the beach today, Eddie?"

"I did, actually. More than I expected, I must say."

"That's good! Because they probably won't let us back after that."

"It's not my fault!" Ed protests, bewildered at the implication. "It's a random technique, I didn't... it was an accident!"

    Chapter 1 #05 - Training, Like A Trainer Should

Two Staryu are not hard to find once she wades past most of the swimmers, and Marie is all of a sudden battling for real. A real double battle, at that. In the water. Tuie flutters back to her perch on Marie's extended arm; she still can't fly for long and she definitely can't swim. Stunnie's happy to bury himself by her feet and is taking great joy in zapping Marie every time she steps on him.

This is not going very well.

"Okay, Tuie, um- use Cosmic Power! Just, do that a few times! Stunnie, start zapping them, not me, oh my god they're like, right in front of you- no, one went left- just- augh."

The Staryu circle Marie, Rapid Spins kicking up a fine, rainbow-tinged spray. Do they think we're playing? Stunnie manages to zap one, but it sinks for only a second as green light suffuses its form, then pops right back up to twirl once more.

"Ooh, just- Stunnie, just zap everything!" Marie immediately regrets that command as diffused electricity skitters up her legs, undirected power lost on the further-away Staryu. "Uh, not that, not that, stop- Tuie, how many?"

Tuie pecks her four times. "Great, hit that fucker on the left!"

Tuie flicks out her wings and a beam of purplish light punches into the Staryu's core, driving it into the seabed at a forty-five degree angle. Stunnie, simultaneously and unprompted, punches the other Staryu out of the water with a Tackle and electrocutes it before it can dive again. The three watch as it sinks into the sea and washes toward shore with the waves.

Marie lies down to float on her back, Tuie on her bandana and Stunnie on her midriff. "Well," she says, after a moment, "that sucked."

    Chapter 1: Part 3 - Beachcomber?

    19:30 to 19:45 - Slateport Beach
When Maritza said her Pokémon's name was Juggernaut, Miranda expected something big and strong like that character from X-Mon, like a Salamence, Tyranitar, even a Flygon would be okay. But a Wimpod? Seriously? The poor thing was so afraid of Miranda that Maritza had to take him inside his PokéBall before it ran away. He seems to be more calm now that they are at the beach, though. Apparently, there's enough trash around for him to be distracted eating than being scared of every person walking 5 meters away from him, or something like that is what Maritza said.

Why are they at the beach, though? Well, Maritza said -after teaching Miranda how to read the words beach, Slateport and location along with some Pokémon names- that they would only be able to catch Pokémon there.

It is similar to the beach south of Gateon in Orre. Kids running with their Pokémon and the classical group of idiots that were playing volleyball too close to the sea that are now waiting for one of them to offer to swim and get their ball back… oh, and how to forget the food stands she doesn't have the money to buy something from. There's also this public dressing room for people to change to their swimsuits and leave the bothersome stuff there, but Miranda doesn't have a swimsuit.

"How is it that a sporty girl like you doesn't have a swimsuit?" Maritza asks, not making eye contact with Miranda, but exploring the beach with her eyes from one end to the other. "At least, you could've asked me to buy you one. I have money for it."

    "I don't want to swim."

"Really? I thought that someone who decided to go to Hoenn would try Slateport Beach when they got the chance. You really are a weird one."

"Who the fuck you calling weird, uh!?" she angrily yelled, ready to smack her head with her bat. "If you wanted to swim so badly, why didn't you buy one for yourself!?"

"Well, I don't swim." she answers. "See, my skin can't be exposed to the sunrays too much. I would burn easy."

"Why the fuck did you come to Hoenn of all places, then!?"

"I have my reasons." the gray-haired girl answers. "Still, I can't help but feel weird dressed like this. Everyone is either shirtless with shorts, has a one piece swimsuit or a bikini, and we both are wearing completely unconventional clothes for this place. Aren't you hot with that jacket?"

"I'm fine. It's already getting dark." Miranda lies, she is actually dying from the heat for being with that thing the whole day. Maritza probably realized, though, she looked like that kind of person that could read people feelings easily, but probably it was because she was very calm in an… unnerving way.

"Are you sure? I can buy you some water if you want to." she offers. "You aren't supposed to die before me, just in case. If anything, you can at the same time."

"I said I'm fine!" Now that she said that, she totally won't be able to take it off when she is actually dying. That would prove her wrong, and she doesn't like being wrong. "Now what about that thing you were going to show me?"

"Well, we won't be able to see a thing if we stay here. Come." Both girls walk closer to the sea. Aside from the people she saw before, Miranda can also see at least three toned people with red uniforms and sticks, that's the only way she can describe them because all of them look the same for her. "See those people over there?" Maritza says looking at two of those stick people "They are the beach's lifesavers. They are supposed to use those sticks to send the Stunfisk underground back to the sea, see?"

Maritza chuckles at her own pun before continuing her explanation, but Miranda doesn't even pay attention to her. She is instead looking at the stick people -lightsaber isn't a good name, she thinks, even if those sticks kinda look like lightsabers for her-, specifically at a blonde one that buries part of the stick on the sand and then pushes with force, making a brown and flat Pokémon come out of the sand. It flips on the sand before being pushed a second time, back to the sea, by the same stick dude.

Miranda now looks around the beach, looking for similar patches of sand like the one the stick dude used to get that Pokémon out, while the other girl keeps talking to herself. She finally finds a suspicious one, though it's a bit bigger than the one the stick dude used.

"Mankey, help me dig here." The Pokémon starts scratching the sand, sending lots of compacted sand to a couple sitting behind him, but Miranda pays them no mind even after they shout at her to be more careful. -What are they even doing in the shoreline, to begin with? Dumb people. They kept digging that spot until Miranda was finally able to take a good look at the wild Stunfisk. Now the only thing she had to do was, take it outside, battle it and catch it. Simple, right?

Just when she already had her bat underground, she hears Maritza talking to her from behind. "Hey, what are you doing?" she asks. Miranda turns around and sees the stick dude from before was with her.

"What does it look like, duh?" she says. "I'm going to catch this shit."

"Oh, I see! I thought you would need help learning how to do it, so I called a lifesaver to teach you. They say they would be happy to give you their job." Maritza cheers, and turns to the stick dude that is looking at her with that are you fucking kidding me? look Miranda knows so well, even if they know she is telling the truth. "... In nicer words, of course! Is she doing it the right way?"

"Yes, that's the right way to use the… stick?" they stay quiet for a second, staring at Miranda's hands. "I haven't seen that stick before, where did you get it?"

    "It's a bat."

"Your bat!?" Maritza repeats astonished. "H-hey! Y-you can't use your bat for this! Put that thing down now!"

"Why would I do that!? It's almost outs- FUCKING HELL!" Maritza yells in pain the moment she feels a strong zap traveling from her bat, sent by the Trap Pokémon she was trying to get outside of its hiding spot. The girl falls down and drops her bat as well and the lifesaver goes to help her get up.

"A-are you okay!?" both Maritza and the lifesaver ask at the same time. Miranda doesn't answer, she just holds her own hand, muttering angrily Ouch, ouch, ouch! Goddamit, that fucking hurt!

Maritza can feel the rage in her eyes. And in Mankey's who is now screeching at the Stunfisk. The girl gets up now and grabs her bat and pushes the lifesaver aside the moment they try to stop her. She raises her arms, holds the bat firmly and swings it with great force, shouting: "Son of a bitch!"

Dirt rises and falls on her cap and clothes as everyone around her see the Stunfisk fall meters away into the sea. Miranda hears a splash and everyone look quietly and surprised at her, except Mankey, he is jumping cheerfuly looking at the sea.

Maritza walks and stands besides her as well. Miranda expects her to be mad at her, that would be common, but she is actually smiling, which now that she thinks about it isn't that surprising.

"Well, that's another way to send them back to the sea." she says, looking at the waves and then looks back at Miranda. "Want to try again?"

    "Shut up."

    Chapter 1: Part 4 - Neon Blue

10:45 am to 10:55 am - Slateport Beach
With their drinks finished, the three Trainers and their Pokémon head back onto the beach. "So, what are we gonna do first?" Tsu walks backwards so she can face both Avril and Jo. "I don't want to go swimming just yet, but there are lots of other options! Jo, you said we should explore, where do you want to go?"

"Well, I don't really know what's here to see." they answer. "The lighthouse seems like an interesting place to take some pics, though. Maybe go there?" Jordie starts thinking then, that maybe they are giving their actual goal less importance than they should. While they definitely wouldn't mind exploring a bit, maybe staying closer to the beach would be a better option… or not necessarily. "Do you think we could find some Pokémon there?"

"That's a nice idea! And sure, Jo… there are many more Pokémon than you would expect here at the beach. Isn't that right, Tsu?" Avril chuckles somewhat forcefully, thinking back to the Stunfisk flipping adventure.

"Yeah! We practically tripped over some Stunfisk earlier!" Tsu laughs, then gets very serious. "I wouldn't recommend it, those Thundershocks kinda hurt."

"Stunfisk, huh? Yeah another guy I met at the Pokémon Center told me I could find some here. They aren't my favorite Pokémon, you see? Seen a few in Unova and well… they aren't that strong or cool looking."

"Well, there are other options!" Tsu shrugs, moving her hand to her bag. "Maybe you'll find a Sandygast, or whatever lives out in the w-"

Not watching where she's going, she accidentally steps in a patch of soft sand, an unpleasantly familiar sensation underfoot. "Wha-" Sparks fly as she gets zapped with Thundershock, falling back and revealing the mischievous Stunfisk buried in the sand.

"Oh no, not again…" Avril runs towards her friend. "Are you alright? I mean you were fine the first time but you never know…" she mutters hastily as Poppy circles around her flower and leans over to see better what's happening.

"That hurt…" Tsu complains, her face red from embarrassment more than anything else. "No need to worry, I'll be fine."

"Speaking of the devil." Jordie chuckles, trying to help Tsu to get up. They look at the Stunfisk in the sand then and realize something weird in it, at that same moment Jordie's eyes open wide. "It's… light brown and blue. Oh my god, it's blue!" they look at Gabby now and see she is looking at them as well. "You know what that means, right?" Gabby looks at the Stunfisk and then looks back at Jordie again, blinking at them and then rolling to one side. The trainer nods and the Solosis sends psychic energy from its body that covers a big area of the beach. Stunfisk then starts moving slower and Gabby seems to be faster than usual now, but everyone else inside Gabby's Trick Room seem to be fine.

"I'll take care." Jordie says, turning to Tsu and Avril with a grin. Because well… this was their catch.

While Avril was actually relieved by Jo's words, Poppy was not really happy to hear that. But she was still being held in place by her trainer's bandana - and now, by her hand as well: she soon gave up on her dreams of glory, but still kept watching the battle with sparkling eyes. Even if getting closer to Gabby made her feel somewhat dizzy.

"That really is a rare Stunfisk, I don't think we've ever seen one like it!" The blonde girl, rather than focusing on the battle, turns to Natsuko instead. "Isn't that right?"

"Yeah, the ones we saw were brown." Tsu is able to stand, having already shaken off the shock. Shiny stands by her side, watching the fight about to start, but not interested in joining in.

Gabby starts by shooting a purple beam to the sand to send the Stunfisk flying outside of its hiding spot, just to stop it from going back underground. Jordie didn't expect it to endure the hit and counter by jumping to the opposite side they planned and striking Gabby harder than she hit it, though.

While Stunfisk is in the air, it shoots a water bubble from its mouth that Gabby quickly blocks with another Psybeam and then shoots another one that strikes the Trap Pokémon outside the Trick Room.

Gabby uses Trick Room a second time now, shattering the walls of the first one she used and follows the wild Stunfisk. The Pokémon crawls across the sand and waits for Gabby to be closer. Before it can jump at her again, Gabby uses Trick Room once more so it takes more time to jump and instantly shoots a last Psybeam that leaves it partially buried underground.

"This should be enough." Jordie says, taking out a Dusk Ball from their handbag. However, before they even prepare to throw it, the ground starts shaking ferociously and they fall down. "Wait, what the fu-! Earthquake!? N-no it can't be, it's-!" the ground opens -in a small area, though it's enough to make it extremely dangerous- and water and mud start spouting upwards in great quantities. "Fissure!? Avril, Tsu, stay away! Gabby be careful! Use Recover if it hits you, try to hit it just once more!"

Avril takes a couple steps back - no need to tell her to, the sight of Fissure is already enough. "Are you sure you don't need help, Jo?" She calls out, now more concerned about their safety (and Gabby's).

"No! This one is mine!" Jordie starts running closer to the wild Pokémon and Gabby follows suit, getting struck by some of the mud and water and obviously using Recover as she was told to. Jordie's hat flies away and falls on the water, but that's not important, the catch is more important now, and knowing that it also knows a strong move like Fissure only makes it more worthy.

Gabby finally gets close enough to the Pokémon and shoots a Psybeam. It misses. She tries another Psybeam and it misses again. "Try another move!" Gabby looks at her trainer and nods. She charges psychic energy inside her bubble and it starts glowing a greenish light that is shot in a big wave of Bug type energy… if that exists. The Stunfisk is hit by it and buries itself even more underground and it calms down.

Before they attempt to catch that Pokémon, Jordie calls Avril and Tsu. They don't know if it'll work, but they have to try to use their towel to make it darker so the Dusk Ball doesn't fail the catch.

"Y-yes?" Avril responds, coming closer to the Stunfisk after having watched most of the battle from further away. In the meantime, Poppy is still encouraging Gabby like a proper supporter.

Tsu sees the Dusk Ball, and the towel, putting two and two together. She hastily undoes the knot on her sarong, tossing the dark fabric into the air. It flutters lightly in the breeze, temporarily casting a shadow over Stunfisk.

"O-oh, I get it!" the blonde girl uses her towel to cast another shadow, after facepalming for not understanding that right away like Tsu did.

Jordie takes that short time to hit the Pokémon with the Dusk Ball and leave it under both towels and the sarong as it oscillates three times and then click. Stunfisk was caught.

Jordie exhales some air and heads to the sea to clean the mud from their body and Gabby's. They see their floppy hat swimming far away into the sea, now gone forever.

"Well, I lost my hat… But! I caught a shiny Pokémon!" Jordie laughs as they walk back to the other girls and take the Dusk Ball and their towel. "I think I'll call… him Neon" they add, looking at the Pokédex on their X-transceiver. "Sorry for scaring you, by the way. I get like that when I battle." they say turning at Avril, who looks a bit clueless at first but soon congratulates her friend. "Well, shall we go? To the lighthouse, now!"

"You're good! Battles are just like that sometimes." Tsu shakes the sand off her sarong, tying it back around her waist. She gives a double v-sign to Jo. "Congratulations on your catch! Let's go to the lighthouse!"

"That's a great idea!" Avril echoes, as she picks up her towel. "And… it's alright, Jo! Hopefully I can get used to the way you battle."

"Are you challenging me?" Jordie jokes, faking a challenging tone and then chuckles. Then they remember that Avril said she will try challenging the gym too when they first met at the ferry. "You still haven't caught anything, right? If you are going to challenge the gym you'll have to catch something here or you won't even have a chance to try… Does anyone want to step on another Stunfisk?"

"Of course not!" Avril pouts, before remaining quiet for a moment. "Hm… so I need to have two Pokémon, right? But how do I get a Pokémon and make friends with it… I mean." The girl sighed. "I mean, you two just battled it out and got your Pokémon but you know…"

Poppy is already looking around for potential opponents, however, chirping at every wild Pokémon she sees. Avril surely notices that, because after some more time spent thinking she just asks: "Ok, how does this work?"

"Hmm… maybe we can help you find one!" Jordie doesn't hesitate to offer. "See, your device should have a scan feature on it that can be used to find wild Pokémon. And assuming you have the Hoenn Ranger Database installed as well, you can see what species you can catch and scan for!" Jordie then looks around the beach. All that people… they are no problem for Jo, but maybe Avril wouldn't like them to observe her on her first catch. Plus they may only find Stunfisk here as well… "If you want to try this in a quieter place, we could try once we get to the jetty."

"Alright!" Avril cheered, actually quite relieved by the fact that her green haired friend seemed more reasonable this time and didn't want to get right to the action. Poppy looked happy as well, as she slid further down under the bandana to protect herself from the wind: it was going to be a comfortable, cozy ride all the way to the jetty.
Jordie caught Neon the shiny Stunfisk (Male)!

    Amenity Trouble

Nyx stood there with a determined look on her face, staring down a large, blue plastic hoop suspended in the air by two poles. At the sound of a sharp whistle she began her sprint, charging forward and leaping through the suspended ring! However as she lept her hind legs caught the lower part of the hoop, sending her tumbling towards the ground.

Kira couldn't help but let out a stifled laugh. This wasn't the first time she watched Nyx fail the jump. It was however the most comedic. "Alright, let's give it another shot then, shall we?"

Nyx however, didn't find her fall to be quite as amusing. After scrambling back into her feet she charged at one of the supports holding the Hoop up into the air, clawing at it in a fit of frustration.

Kira let out a bit of a sigh. "Guess that's a no then." Fortunately the support seemed to take the abuse just fine, Nyx only adding to the vast collection of claw marks on it. Before Nyx could go at it for too long Kira lifted the equipment over her head, earning her an annoyed gaze by the small fox. "Sorry, I'm not giving them an excuse to charge me for my last ₱500."

With a bit of a huff, the disgruntled fox made her way over to a shady tree and rested under some brush. "I guess I'll just find you a scratching post or something." Kira muttered to herself as she made her way over to the club's storehouse, a rather nice shed made out of the same stained wood the club itself is. The door however was already open, a young, brown haired teenage boy shuffling through the shelves. "Any room in there for me to put something up?"

The brown haired boy looked up from his shelf shuffling "Oh, yeah! I'm just putting some stuff up myself."

"Cool, it's kinda awkwardly large so sorry in advance!" Kira called out as she drug the set up inside of the storehouse.

"It's fine, it's fine..." He insisted, looking Kira over as she wrestled with a metal pin in the hoop's stand. "You don't look familiar, you new around here?"

"You can certainly say that." Kira said as she pulled the metal pin on the stand, causing it to collapse to a smaller size. "Just arrived from Kinyo earlier today."

The boy's brow raised a bit. "Kinyo... What were you doing over there?"

"Nothing much, just... Living and all that." Kira replied in the most sarcastic tone she could muster.

The boy seemed somewhat caught off guard by her tone. "Fair enough. You just don't see too many trainers from there ya know?" As Kira finally got the last part of the equipment on the shelf, the boy held out his hand for her. "The name's Liam by the way."

"Kira, Nice to meet you." She said, taking his hand as she looked him over. He was quite a bit taller than she was, her eye level meeting at his lower neck, and seemed to be at least somewhat close to her age.

"Kira then, well what brings you out to Hoenn then?"

Kira grabbed one of the scratching posts from a nearby corner, hoisting it under her arm. "Probably the same reason you were surprised I was from Kinyo. There really isn't much there for a trainer. Heck, even the gyms are shutting down."

"I remember hearing about that; a couple guys were talking about it in the center yesterday. Apparently it was in the news. It's really that bad then?"

"Yeah, Akurnai shut down today actually. A few of us were the last to challenge the gym yest…" Kira began as she interrupted herself, frantically scanning the club's courtyard. "Where's Nyx?" she asked in a panic.

    "Nyx?"

"Nyx yeah! The Pokemon I was with earlier. Small, black, well usually at least. She was just over there by the brush!" Dropping the scratching post she ran out to the courtyard, searching frantically.

"Calm down, she couldn't have gotten far." Liam tried to assure, referring to the Clubhouse's walls all around them. "Unless Nyx is a Murkrow or something…"

"No, god I'd be hesitant to let her out of her ball if she could fly!" Kira called back as she scanned the courtyard. Azure was in clear sight, napping in a small refrigerated pool of water, A young girl with darker red hair seemed to be playing with Kit, the vulpix from earlier, and two growlithe were trying to climb up a small tree. "I swear Nyx, I'm gonna end up buying a tracker for you."

Liam followed Kira, not exactly sure what he was looking for however figured trying was likely better than nothing. "Hey! Get off of her! You'll get yourself hurt!"

Kira turned towards Liam as he ran over to the little girl and Kit.The girl seemed to be holding the struggling fox down with her hands, smiling, but not responding to Liam's objections. "Hey! Cut it out!" Kira called out as well, momentarily forgetting about her own missing fox.

The little girl's ears twitched as she heard Kira's voice. As she turned to meet Kira eye to eye it seemed that Kit had had enough. Opening her mouth, she let out a flurry of icy shards towards the girl's hands. Kira's heart skipped a beat as she saw the girl get hit, scared for the girl… only to be replaced by frustration as she faded away, a frustrated Nyx appearing in her place. "Damn it Nyx! You scared the hell out of me!" Kira shouted, marching over towards her "missing" pokemon.

Liam gave out a bit of a sigh as he watched Kira pick up the small troublemaker. Kit meanwhile gave a bit of a huff before curling up to rest. "That… was nearly really bad." Liam said with a heavy sigh. "I'm guessing you're having a few problems with that one?"

Kira momentarily wrestled with Nyx before finally managing to carry her in a way that keeps her from getting clawed. "More than a few… Just caught her the other day and she's gotten either me or herself in trouble about three times."

"Perhaps she just needs an outlet for her frustration?"

Kira tilted her head just a bit "What are you suggesting?"

"I've dealt with a few troublemakers in the past myself, usually when they start acting up like that they just need to blow off some steam. There are a few moderated battlefields a bit north of here, You up for it?"

Kira gave a surprised blink, she knew trainers were more common in Hoenn but she didn't expect to get a challenge literally a few hours after arriving. "Yeah, sure! She could use a bit more battle experience before we challenge the gym anyway."

"Well, I'll meet you there then. Unless you feel like following me there."

Kira nodded "I'll follow you if you don't mind waiting a bit, I gotta clean up here a bit first."

    Chapter 1 - 5
    What Do You Know?

I… I have to get out here as quickly as possible. However, I don't think he'll let me go that easily. Fine, I'll just have to break his argument and show him his faults.

"Stop being vague and get to the point!" I open my mouth and try my best to speak in an irritating manner to stop him from saying another word.

"Of course, of course, but there's a merit of trying to explain the context, instead of you know? Accusing someone without proof… Unlike a certain someone." Jack speaks in an overtly exaggerated tone.

It is clear as day that he's purposefully speaking that way, to see him finally speaking in this tone… It's definitely chilling. However, I'm no stranger to this kind of situation, I'll pry through your facade and expose who you truly are.

"Why do you speaking that way? It's not my fault that you've shown your true colors."

"Hahaha...Ha… I really hope that you're joking, but it seems that you're actually ignorant."

Is he for real? I shudder to think how wrong I am thinking that he's just a kind guy who likes to joke around. But I can't back down now, I can't let him do what he pleases anymore.

"You… Don't you have any shame? Accusing me-"

"EXACTLY!" Jack abruptly cut my explanation while screaming causing a few confused beachgoers to look at our way.

He immediately points his index finger towards me with a face full of rage. "Don't you have any shame!? You accuse me in front of those people over there. All while you barely knowing me… Heck, with how we introduce ourselves to each other, I'm pretty sure that we don't even know each other's real name!"

I am shocked at how accurate his guess was, maybe I'm the one in the wrong here… No, get yourself together… Do you remember how she used the same argument to pull a wool over your eyes? You can't trust him that easily...

"But… It doesn't change the fact that you broke your promise because of money, you tried to leave me because of chump change and that's a fact you can't refute against!"

Jack sighs while shaking his head in disbelief. "Ok, Miss Katrina, I know that you think that you're the one who has the moral high ground, but do you ever think for a moment, just a moment, mind you… What a Stunfisk is? If your answer is a Pokemon you get a 100, otherwise well… I don't think you qualify as a trainer, which unfortunately is maybe the case here considering how you decide to accuse me of something I never intend to do. Have you get the gist or do I need to be more upfront with you, Miss?"

Wait, no… No way… He... Is he actually?

"...What I mean is… I'm not trying to ditch you… You're the one wildly concluding when you barely know anything. Do you even know how hard it is to survive financially as a competitive trainer? Bet you don't know that when you're born with a silver spoon on your mouth." Says Jack with disappointment clearly reflected on his eyes.

Those words from him hurt me like a dagger, what he said was something I used to hear even from a long time ago, people used to throw those words as desperate reasoning for their horrible actions… But listening to it from someone who actually has a good intention really hurts.

    "Jack, I-"

Just as I'm about to say more stuff to Jack, I can hear a loud noise of someone running towards us.

"Hey, are you okay guys!? I can hear you guys shouting from far away, is something wrong?" It was the lifeguard we talked with earlier, he pants as he leans over to the backrest of the bench I'm sitting on to support himself.

"Ah, sorry… As I told you earlier, I think she sprained her leg haha… Unfortunately, my friend here still insists on helping you, so yeah… Sorry, I screamed really hard, I was really frustrated." Jack bows slightly with a fake smile plastered on his face. It's really scary how fast he can repress his real emotions, but I think he has a good reason to do it right now, not even I want this lifeguard to be distracted from his job because of us.

"Okay then… But please keep your voices down, okay? It's a public place after all… Also, do you want to continue? I mean sure I need someone to help, but I'm not desperate enough to push this job to you when your friend is in this condition." The lifeguard looks at me with a concerned expression, which surprisingly Jack also does.

Even after all that… He's still able to show concern. I'm a horrible person, am I?

Unwilling to make both of them too worried about my ankle, I immediately try my best to put up a warm smile.

"Ahaha, I'm fine, I can just sit here watching the beautiful sunset. Jack already gave me a compress, I'll be fine." I hurriedly say to the lifeguard so he can go back to his job.

"Well, if you say so… Please tell me if there's anything I can help with."

As the lifeguard walks away, I turn my head towards Jack. He stands silently in front of me before he takes a deep breath.

"Listen, I… I honestly don't know what have you experienced before this, but if you keep being like that to everyone, then you might turn away someone that might care genuinely for you. And if that happens who will be there for you when you need it? Please, don't do things like that anymore." Jack looks at me with sorrow clearly reflected in his eyes before putting on his sunglasses, he then starts to roll his shirt sleeves before walking away while holding the poking stick.

I can't speak to him anymore, even if I now know that his concern about me is really genuine… I really want to apologize, but he won't accept it, won't he? After all, what I did was inexcusable.

Not able to do anything, I sit on the bench alone, waiting for him to finish the job to atone for what I did earlier. Beautiful sunset is painting the horizon, yet all I feel right now is remorse for what I've done.

    Chapter 1 #06 - Benji

Benji was relentlessly cheerful and encouraging, but Marie and her team still got absolutely trashed.

He'd used a Wormadam, the pink one, and a weird Diglett with hair. Marie really should have studied Pokémon before this trip, though knowing Wormadam's secondary type wouldn't have helped considering its penchant for Magnet Rise. Knowing Alolan Diglett's may have, but Stunnie was far too slow to do a thing to it anyway.

Barely two minutes of battling and she was out. Humiliating.

It's difficult to be mad at Benji, even though Marie is trying very hard to be. He's very nice and encouraging. He likes battles and wants people to go all-out. It just so happens that Marie going all-out is… pretty much nothing.

He said she'll have a better time down in Dewford. And she'd better. Because she already kinda feels like giving up and going home. Even though the gyms weren't even really the point of this. Marie doesn't like to be bad at things. Especially not things that basically anyone can do.

    Marie doesn't like to fail.

Whether that will motivate her or drive her away, well. That depends on Dewford.

  • Shuna Kamado

    Prologue - Epoch 1.1: Slateport
    Thursday, September 17 {2: 50pm}

    Sudden Job! Friend or Foe?!

"Stunfisk?" Shuna questioned, "And you want me to help you get them off the beach?"

"Y-Yeah. The sticks we are given are rubber-tipped, but that doesn't mean the rest of our bodies are. I can't even count the amount of times my feet got shocked by passing Stunfisk!" The male lifeguard complained, rubbing his forehead with a sigh, but a thought came to him, raising his mood. "Hey! Why don't you help me move the Stunfisk?"

Shuna stared at the male for a minute before cocking her head to the side, "Why? Isn't moving Stunfisk your job?"

"Yup. But I don't like it, so you do it for me."

    "W-wait, I'm busy!"

    "You don't seem busy!"

"I came to the beach to train my pokémon!"

    "You can do both!"

    "The Stunfisk is your job!"

"Not tomorrow! I'm leaving it to you!"

    "Eeeehhhhh?!"

As Shuna and the male lifeguard argued, Finn was playing in the ocean, swimming back and forth. He would jump around and do some tricks, however, Pidge was resting on Shuna's shoulder, watching the ordeal. If the human didn't like his job, why does he still have it?

"You can't just hand it over to me!"

"Of course I can! I saw other lifeguards do it with other trainers!"

"Don't copy them! I'm busy tomorrow!"

"Too bad! I'm counting on you!"

"W-wait!" Before Shuna could refuse, the lifeguard had left, being called to break by another lifeguard. As she watched the males leave, she was stuck and shocked at the events that just occurred.

A job. She had a small job tomorrow that she didn't apply for and had been pushed onto, and alas…

"He didn't tell me what time the job was or where?!" Pidge sighed, humans were interesting, but they had their own fill of drama he'd rather avoid.

    *Timeskip - 6:00pm*

Shuna sighed as she sat on one of the tables on the terrace on the right side of the Pokémon Center. A small plate with some macaroons along with a cup of tea sat in front of her. Before coming to the Pokémon Center it had taken her about three hours to find the male lifeguard, whose name is Hugh, and then ask him when and where the job would occur. She didn't know someone could move from place to place so quickly, and every time she would ask for the time and place, he would change the subject. She had a feeling he didn't want to tell her so she would take the whole day instead of an hour or two of his job. Luckily, one of his friends was nearby and told her where he was stationed and their work hours, and from the look of Hugh's face, her previous thoughts were correct.

"If he doesn't like his job… then why is he still doing it?" mumbled Shuna, picking up her cup of tea as she placed her elbows on the table. She heard a chirp and turned to her right, seeing Pidge sitting next to her arms and Finn sitting on the seat beside her, eating his own macaroons.

"Because of the females obviously." a voice replied. Pidge turned his head sharply and saw a male sitting in the seat across from his trainer, a stranger nonetheless.

"Ah, that makes sense," complied the pink-haired, but after a minute of silence the girl immediately sat up with a squeal, almost dropping her tea. "W-where did you come from?!" The male across from her had shoulder length savoy blue hair tied into a low ponytail, held together by a yellow tie. He had light blue bangs in a similar fashion to hers and emerald green eyes. His outfit consisted of a white turtleneck with a grey v-shirt over, a red leather jacket with a high collar, floral white pants, and brown boots.

"I was looking for a free table to enjoy my lunch." In front of the male sat a plate of mashed potatoes, rice, and corn with gravy.

"Ah, I'm sorry, but I thought you'd pick an empty table," Shuna emphasised 'empty,' since when people look for a free table usually it's an empty one.

"Too boring," was the male's reply. At that moment Finn had finished his food and noticed the other human sitting with them. At first he stared at the male, as if analyzing him, but after a minute he chirped and waved one of his paws. The male noticed the mudfish pokemon waving at him, but instead of doing what the pokémon thought he would do, the male sharply turned his head away, as if ignoring the pokémon. Finn blinked his eyes, registering the human's actions before puffing his cheeks into a pout, lowering his arm. Pidge glared at the human for hurting his comrades' feelings, his feathers ruffling up a bit.

"I see…" Shuna nervously smiled, but when she saw the interaction between Finn and the male, her eyes narrowed a bit. "...I don't believe you. Why did you really come to this table?"

The male took a sip of his cup of coffee, glancing at Shuna before closing his eyes, then placing his coffee back on the table. "I know."

    "Huh?"

"Who you really are… Kuchiki," the male declared, mumbling the last word to himself.

"I'm Shuna Kamado, and I don't know what you mean, mister." Shuna glared, she didn't like what the male was hinting at. It's true, she used to have a different name, but it was changed due to… certain reasons. Pidge, as if sensing his master's anger, also glared at the male. Finn was oblivious to it, still pouting from being ignored.

"No need for glaring, I won't tell anyone." The male closed his eyes, resting his chin on his folded hands, his elbows resting on the table. He then opened them, staring deeply at Shuna. "In exchange…."

"Exchange?" Shuna flinched. She didn't know how this male was hinting at her past, he might not ever know, but she knew that she had to do whatever he said. Her grandparents warned her about her father's side of the family and their problems. So if word got out that she was here, there's no telling what might happen. He might not know, but she wouldn't risk it, what if he does know of her past?

"You have to be my friend." At his words Shuna froze before sighing in relief, but then froze again upon his words registering and looked at the male, confused.

"Friend?" Why would he ask her to be his friend, wouldn't it make sense to ask for something more drastic with information like that? It didn't make sense to her, but she didn't question it. "I-I guess? But you have to tell me your name, since you know mine."

"My name? It's Souei Higurashi." The male, Souei, smirked as he lifted his head, standing from his seat. 'As long as she doesn't know what my real last name is… everything should be going as planned…'

"N-nice to meet you." Shuna bowed her head a bit, weary of Souei. After everything he told her, she didn't know if she should trust this person, but if he knew her old name and past, she couldn't risk it. She had to be his friend or else, her freedom was over, and she still had the mystery of her parents. She placed her left hand over her right wrist, grasping the silver bracelet. She couldn't lose her freedom! One of her goals of traveling was to find her parents and the mystery surrounding them! She remembered the information Arthur told her, back in Nashimity Town. The keystone is the only thing she's got as a lead and a remembrance of them.

"So, as my friend, you're going to hang out with me tomorrow," Souei declared, grabbing a blue shoulder bag from beside his chair and swinging the strap over his head. He turned to Shuna, his smirk turning into a grin. "We'll meet at the front of the Pokémon Center at 10 o' clock."

Shuna watched Souei leave, his words registering into her mind. Once they did however, she gasped and turned to where Souei went, but the male was nowhere to be seen. "Not you too!" Again, she was given no choice but to do something, and it was tomorrow too!

Pidge sighed, giving his master a pitying look. Humans and their customs are weird, but he knew enough to know that humans don't become friends that fast, and with how his master was acting, it seemed forced too. Glaring in the direction the male went, Pidge knew that he had to keep an eye on that human, for he knew Finn wouldn't; the mudfish was too friendly and oblivious when it came to matters like this.

Pidge turned to the mudfish pokemon and saw Finn eating some poké food from who knows where.

    Saturday, September 19th
    Slateport City

After returning from the beach, Edison and Sunny had some free time before picking up their licenses, so they'd gone to a small diner for a late lunch. Afterwards, they went straight to the Pokémon Center, and then to the Gym. Sunny was devastated to learn Leader Benji had already left for the day, and insisted that she get to battle him first.

"I'm sorry, ma'am, but the earliest timeslot has already been reserved for tomorrow." The receptionist explained. "He'll be available for battles between 7 a.m. and noon tomorrow, but the Gym itself will remain open until 7 p.m."

Before Sunny could dramatically overreact, Edison stepped up to reserve the latest slot he could. "You say they're half hour time slots? Then I'll reserve the 11:30 battle, please. You see, Sunny? You may not get to battle first, but you'll be able to battle him before I do, at least."

"I'll take the 11 o'clock battle!" Sunny immediately brightened up. "This way we can show up together and cheer each other on!"

They parted ways after that. Sunny wanted to stay at the Gym and train, while Ed wanted some one-on-one time with his Pokémon to prepare. They agreed to meet back at the Pokémon Center for dinner.

But now, it's Saturday, and their battles are fast approaching. But not as fast as Sunny would like, it seems, as Ed finds her sprawled in a chair at the Center cafe.

"I feel like we've been here before, is it Thursday again?" Ed smiles as she glares at him, so she half-heartedly flips him the bird.

"Eddie, it's seven in the morning. I know you were trying to help, but what are we supposed to do for the next four hours? I don't exactly have a long list of things I wanna do in this town."

"I hesitate to ask, but do you even have a second Pokémon? You wouldn't be challenging a double battle Gym without one, but I've only seen Sputter."

Sunny slowly shifts in her chair, a slow smile spreading across her face as she sits up. "You... you don't know my team? Are you asking to see my Pokémon?"

Ed takes half a step back. "I... suppose I am? Oh... oh, I understand now..."

Sunny jumps up, laughing at Ed. "Well, my esteemed rival, if you wanted a battle, why didn't you say so?"

Ed sighs, but smiles and plays along. "Of course! For as Trainers, we must test our skills! But not here. Perhaps a more fitting setting for our confrontation?"

"Oh-ho! What did you have in mind?"

Ed dramatically puts his hand to his chin, as though in thought. "Why, I can think of no place more suitable than the Gym itself! We shall clash outside the Gym, and defeat the Leader inside afterwards, at the appointed times!"

"Yes!" Sunny glomps onto Ed, nearly knocking him down. "Come, my rival! Our battle will be legendary!"

    ☆☆Later, at the Gym...☆☆

"So, how do you want to do this?" Sunny stands at one end of a battle square, with Ed at the other. "Before, we each only had one Pokémon, so it was a simple duel, first to knock out the other."

"True, but we've captured more since then. I'd recommend we use two Pokémon each, as that's how the Gym battle will go."

"Both at the same time?" Sunny pulls out two PokéBalls.

Ed merely grabs one. "Not yet. Let's not rush this. Do you only have two?"

"Yeah, why? How many do you have?"

"Well, technically..." Ed thinks about it, but Sunny just gives him a look. "I have three. But I'll only be using two, so it's fair."

Sunny doesn't look too happy about that, but relents, putting one ball away. "Fine. Then meet Flare!" She tosses the ball, revealing her Darumaka. He chitters happily, like a mischievous monkey.

"Ah. That's new! And interesting. But I guess you already know Neodymium." Ed sends out his Magnemite, who scans the Darumaka curiously.

"Yes, I do. Hi, Neo!" Sunny waves to Neo, but they don't react. "Flare, use Rock Smash!"

"Oh, so that's who you taught Rock Smash... I taught it to my Munchlax. N.D., use Thunder Wave!"

Flare is surprisingly quick for such a squat little Pokémon, leaping forward and punching Neo center mass. The impact leaves a dent in Neo's armor, but they respond with an electric pulse. Flare screeches as the wave hits him, falling to the ground and twitching a bit.

"Oh, you're fine, you drama queen!" Sunny scolds, but she's smiling as she does. Flare gets to his feet, grinning and flashing a shaky thumbs up. "Good, now use Taunt before Eddie can pull off any more cheap tricks!"

"You mean like Supersonic?" Ed grins as Sunny fixes him with a flat look.

Neo is able to act first, releasing the sonic waves at Flare before he can hypnotize them into only attacking. But Flare is still able to act, and a dark shadow crosses over Neo's eye as the Taunt takes effect.

"Well, attacking is probably for the best right now, anyway. Use Thunder Shock, N.D.!"

    "Flare, use Rock Smash!"

Neo charges up and releases a bolt of electricity, which the paralyzed Flare can't dodge in time. Both Trainers call for the same moves, resulting in the same effect. Flare is struggling to stand, which makes Sunny nervous.

"Come on, Flare! One more Rock Smash!"

"N.D., finish it with Shock Wave!"

Neo's targeting laser scans over Flare, delivering an electric shock that knocks the little monkey out. Sunny returns him to his ball. "Come back, Flare. You did good."

"He did well." Ed corrects, earning a glare for it. "He hits surprisingly hard for such a little guy."

Sunny nods, smiling at the ball. "Yeah, but his aim needs work. Apparently it's a trait some Darumaka have. They hit harder, but their accuracy isn't as good."

Ed strokes his chin in thought. "His Ability? Similar to how N.D. has more powerful attacks against foes that move before him?"

Sunny tilts her head in confusion. "Yeah. But wouldn't slowing the opponent with Thunder Wave kinda negate that Ability?"

Ed opens his mouth to respond, then pauses to consider that. His hand goes back to his chin as he starts calculating the efficiency of Analytic versus the chance of full paralysis.

Sunny realizes he might get lost in his thoughts if she doesn't intervene, so she tosses her other PokéBall. "Let's finish this, Sputter! Eddie, you still with me?"

"Hm? Oh, yes! N.D., can you use Supersonic yet?" Neo produces a noise like an error message on a computer. "I see. Well then, use Thunder Shock!"

Neo fires a shot of electricity at Sputter, and the purple flame lights on the Litwick's wick. At Sunny's command, she launches the burning Ember at Neo, knocking them out of the air with one hit.

"Drat. Still no match for Sputter, eh?" Ed returns Neo to their ball, while Sunny just shrugs.

"Not without your dirty tricks, Eddie. That fancy armor just can't stand the heat."

Ed grabs another PokéBall, a confident grin on his face. "Well, I'm actually fully prepared for you to 'bring the heat' this time. Come on out, Adipose!" The little Munchlax yawns as he arrives, but runs over to hug Ed's leg. "Ready to go, Addie?"

"Wait, he's Normal type, right? Doesn't that mean his attacks won't work on Sputter, 'cuz she's a Ghost?"

"Something like that. His Tackle or Rock Smash won't have an effect, but he has a few other surprises in store. His Lick attack, for example, will not only work, but be super effective! And he's immune to Ghost attacks, so your Hex will be useless."

"Good to know..." Sunny nods as Addie lumbers forward. "Sputter, use Minimize!"

A purple aura surrounds Sputter, and she shrinks down to a quarter of her original size. Addie licks her candle body like an ice cream cone, making her shudder slightly. At Sunny's command, she shrinks again, and this time Addie can't get her as she dodges his tongue.

"Since Eddie likes confusion so much, why don't you use Confuse Ray, Sputter? See how he likes it!"

Sputter's eyes glow purple as her flame ignites, and a mysterious light shines from it and hits Addie. Ed orders another Lick, but Addie is dizzy from the light and falls flat on his face.

"Since Hex isn't an option, use Ember!" Sputter leans forward, launching the flame from her head and hitting Addie with it.

"Shake it off, Addie! Use Metronome!" Addie picks himself up, but loses his balance when he tries to waggle his fingers, falling on his back.

"Wow... I feel kinda bad. Confusion is sorta mean, Eddie." Sunny seems genuine, but still orders another fireball, which Sputter is happy to toss.

Ed orders another Metronome, and Addie stands up to deliver. The energy forms into a cone of white light that washes over tiny Sputter, while Ed scans with his Holotch.

"Apparently that's 'Simple Beam', which replaces Sputter's Ability with one that makes status moves twice as effective. Fascinating!"

"Sputter, use Minimize!" Sunny grins as Ed sputters out a protest. "Door was open, Eddie! You didn't have to share the info."

"But... what... I... oh, fine. Addie, go for Lick again!" Addie trips and falls on his face, at this point having hurt himself more than he's hurt Sputter or she him.

Sunny orders another Ember, which hits Addie in the face as he stands, leaving a nasty burn. "Sorry, Addie..."

Ed isn't too concerned, as Addie plucks a Rawst Berry from his fur and eats it, instantly curing his Burn. "Good job, Addie. How about another Metronome?" Addie gives a thumbs up, then falls when he turns thanks to the confusion.

"Was that the trick? Force me to use only Fire moves but give him a free Burn Heal?" Sunny smiles a little. "It's not a bad plan. Shame it only works once."

"Yes, and I didn't foresee Minimize being such a hassle, or Addie being so easily tripped up by confusion. All in all, this isn't one of my better showings, I must say."

"Par for the course when it comes to fighting me, though." Sunny shrugs. "But the battle isn't over yet, dear Eddie! Have another Ember!"

Another purple fireball, another Burn, this one on Addie's arm. He snaps out of confusion as Ed orders another Metronome, the energy conjuring a wall of water that he is able to ride on. "Ha-HA! That's Surf!"

Addie rides the wave toward Sputter, who somehow dodges at the last second, not even getting wet. Sunny and Ed both stare in disbelief, until Sunny cracks up and starts laughing. Ed echoes her laughter, still trying to process.

"Oh, man, that's great! Sputter, finish it with Ember!" True to her prediction, this last fireball is too much for Addie to handle, and he falls down from the impact. Ed returns him to his ball, letting out a sigh, but perking up as Sunny walks over.

"That was a close match, Sunny! I thought I had it at the end there." He offers her a fist, which she bumps with her own, grinning as Ed winces and shakes it off.

"Her size goes down, but her speed and strength stay the same, so Mini-Sputter is great at dodging! Not that Neo ever cared, but it's a great strategy in general."

She reaches up to put an arm around his shoulders, dragging him down to her level. "But you're correct, my rival! An excellent showcase of our power and skill! Let us return to the Pokémon Center, and prepare for our Gym battles! After this fight, they will be a refreshing palate cleanser, an after dinner mint to our clash!"

"Yes, let's. It should be an interesting match." Ed frees himself from her grip so he can walk upright, offering Sunny an arm instead, which she happily takes.

    Chapter 1 - 2
    An Endless Search For Answers

"What the hell are you doing, man? You're ruining everything." Jack looks at his reflection in the mirror with a sad look as he remembered what he did to Katrina earlier.

Is what he said to her was justifiable? Maybe he shouldn't be too harsh against her, especially since he is well aware that Kat has a trust issue regarding something related to her mother.

There must be an explanation as to why she's acting like that, maybe she's traumatized by something Jack didn't know? The fact that he said she doesn't know anything about him is actually the same for him, and for him to act the way he did… He groans as he throws himself to the bed.

"Damn it, I should've done something else…" Jack starts to roll in his bed as he mutters his lamentations. Maybe he should just stick his nose where he belongs instead of messing around with other people's problem.

He feels that maybe his past decision to distance himself from Alice is the best possible answer, after all, considering how being too close with people like him only brings unnecessary trouble. Maybe it's the same with Kat and that he should distance himself from her also, but as soon he starts to contemplate about it…

"Ouch!" Jack feels a small tinge of pain from his legs, causing him to stop rolling on his bed. As he thought, it was Braveheart who was nudging him gently with its sharp pointy claws.

"You really need to be careful with those claws, Pal. It hurts like hell."

Braveheart lowers its head and floats down to the floor, seemingly looks disappointed with how Jack complains about its attempt to help Jack.

"Come on, don't sulk. I'm not angry, I just wish you start to be more aware that you're a Metang now, I mean your weight changed, your body shape changed also… Not to mention other differences, your approach to handling things needs some change here and there, you know? But I understand you mean well, and I really appreciate it." Jack pats the head of his partner, all in an effort to stop it from feeling down.

Braveheart finally stops sulking as he floats upward once more to Jack's eye level.

Geez, you're so simple… Not that I hate it though.

Jack pats the head of the Iron Claw Pokemon once more, he's really glad that at this moment that Braveheart is the only one out from it's Pokeball, if others are also out they will cause a ruckus that is not suitable for the current mood Jack is in.

"Sorry pal, I need some time alone… I really need to think about some things."

Braveheart nods, and with it, Jack finally put it back to it's Pokeball without any worries remaining. And with that, he can finally deal with the most pressing matter on his plate.

"Okay… Now… Let's try to think this through… Kat now absolutely hate my guts… I have no idea on how to resolve this without an apology, but I bet she won't even answer if I message her… It's best to leave her alone, but can I do that? Do I have the guts to let her be without any help at all?" Jack mutters alone for a bit, to no avail. He has no idea how to settle things with Kat.

I really don't know why I'm so pissed seeing her in that situation… Maybe it's because of … It's just like seeing a spitting image of myself in the past.

Jack laments the stupid reasoning behind his action, just because he hates her way of viewing things that resembled his view back then doesn't give him a license to rant on her. He should've kept his cool and stayed calm to help her properly, just like Alice did for him in the past.

Speaking of Alice, how is she doing? Is she fine? She's more than capable enough to complete the journey on her own, but… I can't help but… No, just stick on thinking about yourself, you're in a deep muk yet you still think about others. Alice is much better than you in so many ways, there's no way she'll be struggling… But what if...

Jack's pair of tired eyes gaze towards his Holotch laying on his desk. The temptation to call Alice is so great that he run towards the desk just to call her immediately.

But just as he grabs his holotch, his conscience says otherwise. Will she able to accept the fact that he lied to distance himself from her? Not even his solid justification will able to budge Alice's view about him. Besides does he really want to chain Alice with a burden to think of instead of letting her reach her true potential? Hell no.

"Wake up, Arthur! Are you really going to spoil what she had sacrificed so much for? There's nothing you can do for her… Besides… Argh!"

Jack slams his watch as he crashes himself on the bed once more, he then sighs while rubbing his head furiously in frustration that instead of answering the huge questions he has on his plate, he only kept piling up more issues as he tried to think more.

Too much meddling on people's lives from his behalf only brings bad stuff, it is a tenet he had abided with for a very long time. He can only be slightly grateful that the incident between him and Alice back in Kinyo reminds him to keep people at arm's length before he involves himself too much in other's life. Which is why he probably should split from Katrina before he goes too deep in his involvement with her issue. But should he do it now? Will she even have a friend if she acts that way again? But if he's with her too long then…

"Argh, screw this! Maybe I need some coffee to think better…" Jack throws a pillow in anger before hurriedly rising up himself from his bed.

Coffee definitely isn't Jack's go-to drink, but with his back against the wall with fatigue from the journey and frustration looming over him. Maybe a jolt of energy from a cup of coffee would help him. With the idea in mind, he starts to walk towards the café at the lobby, hoping that the trip there would provide him with the answer he desperately needed.

    Chapter 1 - 6
    Apology

"What have I done?" Kat mutters as she flops down into her bed. She hugs her pillow tightly as she wails thinking about the incident with Jack earlier.

At the moment she's so full of hatred and disappointment about herself. How can she jump the gun like that? The fight with Jack earlier made her realize, how flawed her view of other people is. Surrounded by scumbags and jerks who manipulated each other to achieve what they wanted without any reservations on how low they can be has distorted her view so much that she couldn't see Jack's true intention.

She can't believe how stupid she is, that she just pushed away one person that would act kindly to her without any strings attached. Now that she looks at it, it was admirable for him to act kindly to her even with how she treated him. All the things that she thought was rude coming from him are probably him joking around, and that thought just makes her feel even angrier that she was acting like a giant douchebag.

"Arghhh! Why did I do all of that!" Kat screams loudly, awakening her Alolan Vulpix that was enjoying her beauty sleep. Realizing her trainer is still awake, she immediately jumps into the bed, eager to play with Kat. However, Kat let loose another scream, unknowingly scaring Aurora who bolts back to her initial position.

"Aurora? Is that you? Oh, I'm so sorry." Kat rushes to her shaking partner, she quickly hugs her out of concern as fear has clearly unnerved the Snow Fox Pokemon.

However, It doesn't take long for her attention to return to the matter at hand. Nothing changes the fact that she had hurt Jack without a reasonable justification. All because she's too narrow-minded to accept the fact that a generous person like him actually exists. She immediately sighs as she looks up to the ceiling.

"Pi…" Aurora quickly releases herself from Kat's embrace and tugs on her shirt sleeve.

"Aurora, why are you? Is it dinner time yet? I didn't check the time at all." Kat manages to quickly deduce the reasoning, after all, her parents had taught Aurora to remind her to eat her dinner without fail. It is a part of her daily activities from long before she started her journey.

    "Ah, it's already 6 PM… Thank you, Aurora…"

Kat slowly walks to the lobby with her partner Pokemon beside her. Her right ankle is really uncomfortable to walk with, but it's not a major hindrance for her as it's not as painful as she initially thought. The nurse who diagnosed her even told her that it's just a minor sprain and that she just needs to be patient for 2 to 3 more days.

After limping towards the lobby, she finally able to see the exit in sight. Just a bit more and she can finally eat some good food, normally she would be happy for the chance to taste cuisine from outside her home region, but with the issue with Jack still clouding her mind, she isn't sure that she can enjoy her last meal of the day.

However, she can't be showing any sadness, at least not in front of Aurora. She's always been a worrywart about her overall condition. Kat has no intention at all to make her worry again, especially this early on her journey.

It's all fine when she's about to walk through the door of the Pokemon Center, unfortunately, she catches a glimpse of someone familiar sitting with his back turned to her. Normally, she'll think it's just a coincidence that someone else might wear the same outfit, but that indigo sweater? She's almost 100% that the person sitting there is Jack.

She now stands on the door of the Pokemon Center. Her head says that Jack won't accept her apology and even might lash back towards her, but her heart compels her to apologize right now.

    "What should I do…"
