Should 60fps be prioritized?

    What the title says.

I'm a firm believer of "1 buck per frame". I want my games to be 60fps and nothing less. Of course, I don't mind 30fps for the most part, but I do much prefer 60fps. Much prefer. So if there's the option for 1080p/30fps or 720p/60fps, I'm going with the latter without hesitation. If there's hardware problems or limitation, then no problem for me, but if framerate is sacrificed for graphics then I simply do not support that thinking.

Obviously not all games require 60fps. If it was a fighting game or a racing game, then you're god damn right I won't excuse anything less than 60fps. But if it was something like Uncharted, or 3D Zelda, then 30fps is fine. It depends on the kind of game and how much precision it requires. I can't imagine playing New Super Mario Bros or Metal Gear Rising for 30fps for example.

But enough of my thoughts. Developers these days seem to not care for 60fps, and would rather go for better graphics or a better resolution. Do you agree with that? Or would you rather developers aim for a 60fps frame rate? Discuss.

60fps is preferred for me, since when recording i can still play the game without going into 20's. I always have a huge frame drop with it and to minimalize this i prefer the 60 fps. Same here. Graphics dont interest me much if the framerate has to suffer from it.

I have heard Metal Gear Rising: Revengance did a great job keeping the game at 60 fps by just sacrificing textures.

On consoles? Yeah. It straight up looks like a PS2 games often times with its textures.

But that doesn't matter because the game runs so smoothly. 60fps does a better job in making the game look better than graphics, if you ask me.

Agreed, better framerates > graphics any day.
I love playing games on with high framerate and i simply cant stand a game that runs below 30 fps.
Mainly i hate to play strategy fames at 30fps or below, mainly cause i end up losing units when i get under that 30fps.

F-Zero GX imo holds up so well visually BECAUSE of 60fps. Amazing game.
    Here's some 60fps gifs. They're huge, though!

And here's a gif for comparison. 30fps vs 60fps (find out which is which!)

It's a HUGE shame developers don't prioritize 60fps (on consoles), imo. It enhances games big time. When DmC was announced to be 30fps I was hugely disappointed, because seeing the 60fps PC version it looked so damn smooth.

I prefer an interesting art style to both realistic graphics and a high frame rate. But out of those two, generally the frame rate, although it depends on the game.

I'd much prefer a consistent framerate over 60 FPS. Having 60 FPS is nice and peachy, but you should never strive for something if you can't do it properly.

If your game looks pretty but runs a frame rate which is unplayable or unpleasant that you've just wasted your time making a game with good graphics. I'd rather play a game that looked like a Playstation 1 title with 60fps rather than a game that looked like a Playsttation 4 title at 20fps

In this day and age, I thought there was no excuse to make games below 60 fps with the hardware we have.

But I WILL settle for 30 fps if the graphics are good enough.

It probably should since there's not really any excuse, imo, for corporations to produce systems that weak or games that unoptimised. Personally, I think 40 is a decent standard, beyond which returns are significantly diminishing.

When it comes to recording hard achievements and uploading it on YouTube, then 60 FPS is an inevitable must. Unless the video is intended to be a TAS'd run or something...

Im sure that if a game runs at 30 (which i had experience with), that when a lot of stuff happens, it can drop down to below 10. I have had this happen with Borderlands, Far Cry, StarCraft and way more games. But then again it could be the horrible specs of my laptop xD

As someone who can hardly recognize the difference, I don't think it should be prioritized. As long as it's smooth, I'm fine with it. And I think the visual levels should go like: Art Style>FPS>Graphics
It undeniably enhances the game (especially in certain genres, like racers and fighters where it is pretty much required), regardless if you can't notice it, so why shouldn't it be prioritized?

Art style and frame rate tend to go hand in hand, if anything. Nintendo is pretty much a prime example of that.
....Ya know, Luck and ZangFloyd make a good point. An inconsistent framerate IS pretty bad too. Perhaps devs could work on having both a higher standard framerate as well as keeping the framerate consistent?
Thing is, most 60fps are pretty much consistent anyway. There's far more 30fps game with drops than there are 60fps with hiccups.

The priority debate is something I can agree on 60 fps with. When I went from the console release for Sonic Generations to the PC one (with a computer capable of running it at 60) I noticed a massive difference in how well I as able to enjoy the game. For some other games I'm willing to turn it down to get 60 because things just look so smooth and more enjoyable.

Though for some games I find it understandable (GTA V attempting to push hardware on very old hardware, for example.) But with current games, and those coming in years, I think 60 frames should be something to aim for with the One and PS4.

God yes, if it's a main game that I am playing then 60 fps please! If it's a game that I only plan to play for a little while then I could care less about the fps. If games like Street Fighter or Smash Bros. don't have the framerate that I want then I am hugely dissapointed!
