Year 2021, April:
Kanto has never been the most popular region for its nature, its culture or even its native species of pokémon. What makes the region great, is its people. So many famous trainers, actors, businesspeople, researchers and explorers have their origins in Kanto, and they outshine the natives of other regions in many situations with their pride for their region and brilliant energy and minds. At least... that's what they're saying in Kanto.
One career in which Kantonians have historically been particularly dominant, is pokémon battling. Anybody owning a pokémon is legally a trainer and obliged to follow trainer laws. But taking it one step further and battling other trainers for money - that makes you a battler. As with any type of sports, there are hobbyists, and there are those who strive to actually pursue a professional career. Most battlers undertake journeys through a region both at the start of their career as a test, as well as later on to stay sharp and well versed in skills and environments - as well as to build a web of useful contacts from around the world if they can! Every year, the Pokémon League also resets. This means that any battler can challenge the gyms around the region. If they manage to collect at least 8 gym badges, they have earned the right to challenge the Elite 4 for the title of Kanto Champion.
You aspire to be a battler, but you don't own any pokémon yet. As the Kanto community prides itself on its outstanding reputation for producing great battlers, the government has set up an office where trainers can receive a starter pokémon for free and a complimentary pokédex - which becomes registered as an ID in their name - to kickstart their career. This endeavor started a few decades ago and has proven to be successful. The pokémon species given out have largely remained the same, with a few seasonal and promotional changes now and then, and the core trio which were originally very rare pokémon, are now widely known as "the Kanto starters". A professor Green Oak is officially responsible for handing the starter and pokédex out to new battlers, and the facility can be found in Pallet City, a modern and still growing settlement in the southwestern part of the region.
... However, you (currently) live in
Fuchsia City. You might have wanted to sign up in Pallet City, but for one reason or another, you became aware of a new endeavor going on in your own town. Another pokémon researcher,
professor Cypress, is starting up her own battling agency called
Battle Beyond, through which she hopes to rival the official monopoly on teaching new battlers how to think and train. This flamboyant figure offers a different selection of starters, bred in the local Safari Zone by her team of researchers. They are at least as strong as the classic "Kanto starters", and according to Cypress, they are even more intelligent.
The catch? Cypress believes strongly in
aura. As the existence and influence of aura in battles and pokémon growth is hard to prove, Cypress so far isn't taken seriously by other scientists. She will require you to agree to try your best to get in tune with your own and your pokemon's aura over the course of your journey, and report any unusual behavior or findings back to her. That doesn't sound too hard, does it?
And Team Rocket isn't really big and dangerous, and you won't need to worry about them... Unless you're training strong pokémon. Then you should probably be very worried. What are they really up to, though?
Setting
There are a few things you should know about the Kanto we're playing this out in. First of all, the year is 2021!
- The story of RBY/FRLG never happened. There were two trainers called Green and Red starting their journeys at the same time though, receiving one pokémon each from Green's grandpa back in 1996 along with the first portable pokédexes. Green took his grandpa's place eventually, while Red became the Pokémon League Tournament champion before vanishing mysteriously.
- Team Rocket didn't rise back then. They were always low key and not really known to the public.
- As this is 2021, you might not recognize all gym leaders or places in Kanto. Things change!
- Humans hurting humans physically is a widespread
taboo, even among those you'd call criminals. For hundreds of years, the much more durable pokémon have done all the fighting for humans, as it has benefitted them both - humans don't get hurt, and the pokémon grow their bodies and aura stronger and thus often evolve.
--- This is why it's not considered such a strange thing to send a teenager alone on a journey around the region, as long as they can take care of themselves and have sufficiently strong pokémon with them. Strong people can be bad trainers, and great trainers are seldom bad people.
- Oh yeah, Aura is canon here. Think of it as The Force but in pokémon instead of Star Wars. Feel free to have your characters develop it as a means to become psychic (psychic humans have been canon in the game/anime verse ever since gen 1) or communicate with their pokémon or channel pokémon abilities or moves or anything like that, eventually. Creative freedom! Help Cypress' research out (: You may of course opt out and be a normal person, if you prefer.
Mechanics
Okay, fasten your seatbelt and we will get through this. It's not as complicated as it might seem... I hope! This RP will, simply put, consist of players doing a number of actions during a 2 week period. Two weeks IRL = One day IC, unless there are special circumstances. If you fail to make at least one action during any 2 week period without having giving the GM a good reason for your absence, you will be warned. If it happens two IC days in a row, you risk being removed from the RP. Keep up!
You can do a max of 7 actions every 2 IRL weeks (one IC day) and a minimum of 1, unless the GM states otherwise in special cases.
Below is a list of things that will count towards your weekly actions. You can do the same action several times, if you wish.
- Train your pokémon through exercise, practicing skills etc (+1 level to all of your training pokémon, per action. Pokémon at 10 or more levels higher than the wild pokémon in the route can't train in that route though!)
- Battle a wild pokémon (+1 level to each of your fighting pokémon. Pokémon with 10 or more levels higher than the wild pokémon won't grow from this though!)
- Battle a trainer (+2 levels to each of your battling pokémon)
- Battle another player (+4 levels to each of your battling pokémon)
- Catch a pokémon (if there was a battle leading up to the capture, levels gained accordingly, and that counts as a battling action. No need to wait for approval; you may capture pokémon in any way you like)
- Challenge a gym leader (might be a JP with the GM or other sanctioned player, levels given arbitrarily)
- Evolve a pokémon (if the GM has notified you that a pokémon is able to do so!)
- Trade a pokémon (at any time with other players, but only at specially presented times with NPCs)
- Hatch a pokémon (if you happen to have an egg and the GM has notified you that the egg is ready!)
- Teach a pokémon a TM / tutor move (TMs can be occasional rewards, tutors will appear in some areas. Pokémon learning moves upon leveling up does not take up action points!)
- Move to a new area (you can do this in any post, and jump back and forth if you want, but it does take up one action every time!!)
Each action needs to be validated with
at least one post, and as you know, the minimum word limit here is 100 words.
You can either make several posts throughout the 2 week period or
one post with several (or all) your actions in it.
Even posts with several actions
can be short, if you really can't be bothered to RP a bit more thoroughly... /sadface
This means that if you want to mostly write short summarizing posts and just enjoy growing a team using the RP mechanics, then do. If you would rather like to use your creative vein and love to write, then write more!
Every (other) week, a new area will (usually) open up if there is at least one player who wishes to proceed.
Rules
- Max 5 actions per week, minimum 1. You can make any number of posts, however, as you can have several actions in one post, or let one action span several posts.
- If actions are concluded, please state at the end of the post what actions you performed. I'll keep track of your details in a list in the start of the IC thread.
- Rating is T. That being said, feel free to make your character and the world around them seem realistic rather than overly kid friendly.
- Be friendly at all times ooc!
