Now that the practice battle was done, and Sean had won, his confidence had rose towards his following battle. Sean was totally ready now to get started on his second battle although he had to sue a different Pokemon sicne Growlithe was worn out.
Blaine stood up from the table which he sat at, then clapped to signal that he was impressed.
"Well done. Looks like you're ready for the main event, to battle me for the 7th badge." Blaine was also ready. Jenny was at the side, calling Growlithe over to a bowl of food for its lunch.
"Your Growlithe deserves a good break. I'll give it some lunch, so it will be better in no time." she certainly was generous towards Pokemon, as Sean guessed.
Since Growlithe was on its break, Sean had to choose his next Pokemon to use in this battle. The choice took him not so long as he wanted the battle to be quick, and type-wize, there was no better Pokemon to choose than this.
"Now, let's start our battle, shall we? Horsea, do your stuff!" Sean got a PokeBall from his pocket, then launched it to the ground. Out came Horsea, who levitated above the ground with its two small, clear wings flapping at great spead to keep its weight up.
Since this was a Fire-type Gym and Horsea was a Water-type, Sean had made the best possible decision, because now Horsea's attacks would do more damage than usual. However, this could be cancelled out if Blaine had chosen a strong Pokemon. Blaine got a PokeBall out.
"Smart choice there. Do your best, Ninetales!" Blaine tossed the ball to the ground, releasing a cream coloured fox, with bright red eyes and nine curly tails. Natasha looked at it and made a cheesy smile, since she had a Vulpix that would become a Ninetales in time.
Now that both of the Pokemon were out, the battle was now ready to begin. It was up to themselves if they wanted to make the first attack, or just wanted to wait a little longer as a strategy. Blaine started off.
"Let's begin. Ninetales, start off with Quick Attack!" it was a very simple attack, that would be the good idea to use first in a battle since not many of Ninetales' attacks would work well on a Water-type. The fox was on four of its legs, all of its tails were wagging, before it then shot off at a lightning speed. While this attack was fast, too fast to see, Ninetales lost its focus and hadn't fully concentrated on Horsea yet, therefore, Ninetales ended up hitting a volcano wall. A bad start for Blaine.
"Hmm. Maybe next time." Blaine shrugged and accepted that his first attack had missed. He was sure that Sean wouldn't be so lucky either, and they both could make a mistake in the battle.
"Good start. Horsea, you begin with your Smokescreen!" this was Sean's usual startegy, by beginning with an accuracy lowering move. This way, Blaine's chance of missing would rise, giving Sean a very decent advantage. Horsea concentrated hard on Ninetales, who was sitting on its four legs, and shaking its head due to the damage of being hit against a wall. Once Horsea had concentrated hard enough, it shot out a black, gooey ball of ink that left off black drops that dripped onto the ground. This ball had then ended up bursting on Ninetales' eyes, causing several clouds of fog that blinded Ninetales slightly.
"Oh. That idea? I'm used to it. Trust me when I say it won't work." Blaine smiled with his eyes closed, and arms folded.
"It normally works. And it will work again. Just see." Sean pointed out the fact that his strategy works on any battle, as it can. Every Pokemon can get affected by weakened accuracy.
"Well, I don't see that happening. But just incase you have anything else planned, Ninetales, use Safeguard!" Sean had not known what this move was. He was just suspecting that is would be some move that would protect it from having its accuracy lowered further. He was not far off, instead, it would stop it from being conditioned. Nintetales was sta down on its four legs, then it started to make a howl into the air, which had then made itself glow. This blue glow had then turned into a circle, then finally, a veil had surrounded Ninetales for a second. Then, the veil disappeared.
Now that Ninetales was protected by conditions, Sean couldn't use any moves that would condition it. Although, Horsea had no moves that would be able to condition Ninetales anyway, so it was useless.
"I don't know what that was, but I don't care. Horsea, use Focus Energy." this attack would not do any damage, but Sean knew that it would increase Horsea's chances of making a critical attack that would do more damage than usual. Nobody had yet noticed that any direct damage was dealt, but they were planning on doing so soon. At this moment, Horsea began to fly a little faster in the same position it was flying in. Then, red sparks were beginning to fly from Horsea's body, showing that Horsea was getting its focus. Then, Horsea calmed down from the attack. Now any moves Horsea would do would have bigger impact.
"Always relying on luck, eh? Well, I'm going to officially make this battle hotter. Ninetales, use Quick Attack and this time, try and concentrate hard!" Blaine wanted to make sure that this attack would hit, because the last time, it made him more annoyed when it missed at the first go. Ninetales stood up, then dashed across the rocky floor, at the speed of sound. This attack was lots more direct and focussed, so the hit was successful. Ninetales ended up hitting Horsea head on, and the attack had crashed Horsea to the floor. Even at the first attack, Horsea was shocked. Just in an instant, Horsea got back up as if nothing had happened.
"Ahh, determination. Gotta love it." Blaine admired the way that Sean's Pokemon had the courage to not give up. Now that the first direct attack was given, Sean was going to follow it up with a very tough one.
"Better watch out for this one. Use Water Gun!" now Sean was taking advantage of the typing, by using one of Horsea's best moves. This could possibly ice the cake for him, as Water Gun was quite a strong move, and from Horsea, there was extra power, especially from Focus Energy. The floating Horsea then began to gather up lots of water inside its tubular mouth, then shot out a blast that travelled in a straight line. This water had then struck Ninetales very hard on its weak spot, its tails. Ninetales let out a painful yelp, then made a three point landing to the ground in pain. The attack had not won the battle for Sean, but close. Even on the first attack that did damge, it would take him more than one. All it took was one more, and Blaine couldn't risk that for now. It was time for him to release a really annoying attack.
"Very good indeed. Let's see if you can pull through this. Use Confuse Ray!" anything with the word 'Confuse' in it would take a smile of Sean's face and replace it with a frown, because confuse was the worst state for him to be in. Ninetales had stood up on its legs, then shook all its tails up. This had looked beautiful, but the next sight would certainly not be beautiful for Sean. Ninetales had opened its mouth, then released a purple, sparkling ray of a strange pyschic power. This ray was hard for Horsea to avoid, so Horsea floated on the spot, to then be zapped by this odd ray. After being zapped for a couple of seconds, Horsea ended up all over the place. Rather than floating, Horsea stumbled on its wings, showing that Horsea was now confused.
"...uh oh." Sean's speech was decaying since the battle could now turn around after a confusion state. Even after a very powerful Water Gun, a confusion state could cause Horsea's attacks to miss. However, he had to attack. Besides, he never knew. It could hit, and cause a very good win.
"Well, it's worth a try. Horsea, please, try and use Water Gun on Ninetales!" Sean's strength and relationship with Horsea could dispel its confused state, although it was unlikely. Confusion was confusion, and Sean had nothing to use that could cancel this effect. Still, Horsea could hear, so, it tried to fly up straight, then shot out some water. Atleast it had given some effort in trying to attack, but this Water Gun was totally slanted, and had travelled over towards Natasha. Luckily, she had avoided this Water Gun, and had waved to signal that she was okay. Although, this was a problem since the confusion looked quite bad. Could this battle really have turned over in Blaine's favour?
"Looks like things are goign back to the way they should. Now, Ninetales, use Quick Attack!" Blaine was totally used to using this attack, since it was the best one to use, even if it was repetetive. Without a word, Nintales was ready to begin with another Quick Attack. Blaine had a feeling that this attack could end the battle, atleast the first part. However, Sean had other plans and was sure that Horsea would pull through. Either way, it was down to this attack. Ninetales got up, and pushed its legs back. Then, Ninetales sped across the floor once again, over to Horsea who then got shoved to the ground with Ninetales' sheer force. Luckily, Horsea was not knocked out, so it was not the last attack. Matter of fact, the Quick Attack had busted Horsea's confusion.
"Wait... it's snapped out of it? How could this be!?" Blaine was so annoyed now that his Quick Attack had turned totally against him. Sean cheered with pride to know that he was close to winning.
"What luck! Horsea, let's finish this off! Use Bubblebeam!" this was Horsea's strongest move, and the Focus Energy was still in effect, and due to the confusion being broken, Horsea was totally likely to make this attack hit hard, very hard. Infact, as another boost, Horsea was so energised and relieved after being snapped out of confusion, that this attack would be more concentrated and focussed. So, without another word, Horsea gathered up some bubbled in its mouth, and then closed it eyes to show that there was going to be lots of effort being put into it. Then, finally, Horsea blew out a cannon of bubbles at shocking speed. There was an endless amount of these clear bubbles being shot out, so all the more damage that would be done to Ninetales. Once by one, each bubble that hit Ninetales felt like a bullet, it was hurting a lot. The final blast had bubbles had caused Ninetales to take no more, and fall to the ground, and faint. The first part of the battle was done now, and Sean was the winner.
"Yay! That was excellent! You did your absolute best and it had paid off! Way to go." Sean had smiled at Horsea deeply, and had then tapped its back to congratulate it. Sean returned Horsea, then hearing Blaine's speech, after he returned his Ninetales.
"That was very impressive. I think me and you are lots alike, you know. You have some strong potential in being a skilled trainer. Now, you have to take on my next Pokemon. Once you win this, the battle has been won and you get your badge. Get ready, because if you win, then I have a great reqard for you that I give nobody else." the final word had been like music to Sean's ears. Now it was official, Sean had to win the battle. It was now in his fingertips.
Now that there was a reward for Sean to earn, he was goign to be far more determined to win this battle. It was in his hands, since the first part he had already won. Plus, Sean was suspecting that his next Pokemon couldn't be that bad.
In the background, Natasha was rooting for Sean, while sitting on the bench at the other end of the room with Jenny, as Growlithe was playing with a ball.
"Go Sean! That badge is nearly yours!" she was there for him incase he needed help. Of course, that was highly unlikely in the stage that he was at. Jenny was the same.
"So. What's it going to be?" Sean was ready to see what he was up against on the next half of the battle. Blaine raised one eyebrow ith a smile, and took out a PokeBall.
"Glad you asked. This is what you're up against... Come on out, Magmar!" Blaine threw the ball to the ground, and out came some kind of Pokemon that had lots of red flames blazing from its body. This strange Pokemon was quite a tough Pokemon to beat. Tougher than Ninetales, definetely. Sean has also made his mind up on what he was using.
"Fine. Growlithe! Are you ready!?" Sean turned his head back to growlithe, who was lying on the floor. Growlithe responded right away, and made a bark, to show that it was. Growlithe came running over to Sean, and then took its place on the ground of the volcano.
The final battle of this Gym was about to begin, and nobody was feeling like they were going to lose. Unfortunately, one of them was. Of course, Sean had total faith in Growlithe as his partner, who had never let him down, never. Things in this battle were going to be more difficult for Sean, since he could no longer take advantage of types. They were both Fire-typed, so he was only limited to a few decent moves. He was ready, and had begun the battle.
"I'm ready to start this. Growlithe, begin by using Bite!" this was the typical move that Sean would command Grolwithe to use incase itas other moves wouldn't be good enough. While, also, being one of Growlithe's bestest. The idea in Sean's mind was to keep using it since it was the only real good move it had against Magmar. Growlithe got started, by pushing its body back, and then launching off at a high speed. Growlither then opened its mouth when near Magmar, then, when it was close enough, Growlithe took one large bite on Magmar's extremely hot body.
"Not a bad start. Let's use Faint Attack!" this was a strong move, and the worst thing to Sean, was that this attack would never miss. This means that he cannot get lucky when this attack is being used. Magmar slowly creeped over towards Growlithe, as this wasn't supposed to be a fast attack. Growlithe was not getting intimidated, though it was going to fight back. Then, when Growlithe was not expecting it, Magmar started to scratch Growlithe several times, which Growlithe had defienetely saw coming.
This battle was going to be different to the last one, since there was no startegy being used. Or was there? Sean was about to plan out another startegy to make his attacks stronger. There was only one way to do it, so he was going to get started with it.
"Time for another plan. Growlithe, use Leer!" with Leer, Growlithe would make Magmar less defensive, by giving it a threatening look. While rather unlikely to work, Sean was great at giving things a good try. Growlithe waited until Magmar made eye contact, then, once one eye pupil met the other, Growlithe began to lower its eyebrows, then its eyes glew a golden colour. This strange look had made Magmar sweat more than it does usual, as a reaction to the frightening look. This means that Magmar was less defensive against Growlithe, and now Growlithe would have more power over it.
"Come on. That strategy is very primitive, wouldn't you think?" Blaine's advice wasn't helping, especially not right now.
"Probably not, but it's worth it. You never know until you see what happens." Sean had a reason for everything, and he truly believed that with a little mind power things could turn out well.
"If you say so. I have my own plans, but we'll see where it gets us. Now, Magmar, use Smokescreen." now Sean was afraid, because aside to confusion, accuracy decreasing was the worst possible scenario, and this would be much harder for him to get through this battle. The strange flame-covered Pokemon began the attack by shotting out a blob of ink from its mouth, which had then travelled across the air, and then landing on the worst place possible - Growlithe's eyes. This ink had caused a small explosion of clouds, which had made Growlithe's eyesight a big problem.
"Well. I guess that makes things a lot easier. Looks like you're gunna have to step it up a gear if you want to win this battle, Sean." Blaine was pushing him further, but Sean didn't feel like it was encouragement. He felt more like it was pressure.
"Growlithe! Use Bite, and try to see!" in Growlithe's state, it would be difficult to see. Just like Ninetales in the previous battle. Things were like that right now, but not in a good way. It only meant that things were going to be harder, so Sean had his fingers crossed tight so the attack would hit. Growlithe closed its eyes, and started to run in a direction that was in the right line of Magmar. Although, in the middle of this running, Growlithe started to slant in the direction it was running, so instead, Growlithe ended up bitingits ball, which it had been playing with earlier on.
"Aw man." Sean slapped his head with disappointment, but he knew that the future of the battle would be bright. The unlucky streak was over for him, he could tell it.
"Don't worry. Maybe soon you'll suprise me. Magmar, use Smog!" while not being a very strong attack, Smog had a chance of doing something worse than confusing and accuracy lowering, much worse, it had a high chance of poisoning. While poisoned, Pokemon lose HP every turn and that would seriously weaken Growlithe if it were to happen. Magmar was alert, and began to shoot out a purple cloud of gas from its mouth. This poisonous gas quickly travelled over to Growlithe, who then coughed hard as a strong reaction to the Smog. Once the cloud cleared, Growlithe felt much more run down, which was a symptom to posion. This means that Growlithe would now weaken every turn.
"Well Sean, it looks as if Growlithe is poisoned. Now you'll really need something to compete with that." Blaine really was a clever Gym Leader, and had much more of a connection with him that any other.
"Don't you worry. Growlithe, use Bite once more!" Sean was very used to using this move, as it would be the only one he could use for now if he wished to get anywhere. Anything else had to wait. Growlithe got up on its legs, and then caught out where Magmar was, even with its poor sight. Then, Growlithe kept its concentration on Magmar as it began to run on all four legs. Then, once close enough, Growlithe took one bite onto Magmar's hot body. This attack was quite a strong one, and Magmar started to shake for a second in pain.
"That's more like it!" Sean cheered on Growlithe as he was proud to see that he was getting it right. Whereas, Sean couldn't see the damage done second by second due to poison. Blaine was still winning, and was not far off victory. Yet, Blaine still had a little further to go.
"You're forgetting that Growlithe is poisoned. Besides, with Magmar's power, you have to try a little harder than that. Magmar, use Faint Attack once more!" after the last one, Blaine was pleased with himself to see what Faint Attack could do. And since it couldn't miss, there was no getting out of the damage that this could do. Magmar started to slowly walk on over to Growlithe, making sure that Growlithe wouldn't see anything coming. It was working, Growlithe was just staring, waiting for something to happen right infront of its face. A few seconds later, Magmar stood still, then, when Growlithe did not expect a thing, Magmar took a lash out at Growlithe. This attack was a lot stronger than the last one, and Sean was getting really annoyed now as Growlithe had took to the floor, then making a coughing fit due to the posion.
"Argh... that's bad." Sean didn't like the way things were going. Damage was being dealt and there was nothing to be done but wait and watch.
"But still. Growlithe, try your best with another Bite!" Sean was now getting totally used to using the same move over and over, he was getting rather bored of it. Although, it was the only thing he could do. Growlithe was on its four legs, before launching into the air at a high speed. Then, Growlithe was charging while accellarating across the ground. This meant that Growlithe would make a hard attack on Magmar, and it was about time. Fianlly, Growlithe took one leap onto Magmar's flame body, taking it to the ground, before crushing its fangs onto its body. This was the attack he'd been waiting for, as the pain was visible on Magmar's body.
Now the battle was balanced, and any one of them could win. Although, Blaine had discovered Sean's weak spot, which had been discovered on the last battle. Now it was time for him to use this move, and completely mess Sean up.
"Well done. Now, Magmar, use Confuse Ray!" after giving the command, Sean slapped his forehead with annoyance. Now he started to lose confidence in himself. After the last battle, Growlithe had been confused by Ninetales and had missed an attack. One attack missing means game over for him at this stage of the battle. Sean could not afford this. Magmar responded to the command by shooting out a mystic, purple ray from its mouth that had left purple sparks flying. The ray had then zapped Growlithe from a distance, and after a few seconds, the ray worn away, leaving Growlithe circling itself. This was a terrible distractin that Sean was dreading.
Now it was time for a miracle. Sean needed a good plan, and fast, before Blaine would attack and win the battle. It was totally possible, and would happen with just one more attack. While Growlithe was in a state, Magmar also had trouble keeping itself together. There were purple broozes on its body, due to awful bite marks that were caused by Growlithe's sharp fangs.
"Well?" Blaine was waiting for a response from Sean, as he was getting impatiant. Then, Sean had a plan in his mind, that could win him the entire battle.
"Okay. Growlithe. Please, please, please try and get this right. Use Reversal!!" this attack was taking advantage of Growlithe's poor condition, since the less health on Growlithe the more powerful the attack would be. This was the greatest time ever to use the attack, it was all down to whether it would hit. Growlithe had listened right away, and then stumbled across the ground, trying to notice where Magmar was. Then, once Growlithe could notice something, Growlithe began to defy the confusion, by charging on its legs as fast, and as stable as it could. Then, Growlithe took one big push at Magmar, crashing it to the ground with intense force. This battle had ended, after Growlithe's powerful Reversal had knocked Magmar to the ground, causing it to faint.
"Awesome!! Growlithe, you're the best!" Sean was very proud of Growlithe, and was his totally bestest friend. Sean stroked Growlithe with great congratulations. After congratulating Growlithe, it was time for him to get his reward from Blaine.
"Truly and utterly brilliant. I am proud to call you my stepson. Here is your badge, nobody deserves it more. And also, here is your reward which I have kept for a very, very long time." Blaine gave him the badge, which was a bright red flame. Sean was excited to see what this reward was, it must be special. Then, Blaine got out an orange disc, which Sean had recognised.
"This is a Technical Machine. It contains the strong Fire-typed move, Overheat. This move is very strong, and should not be used unless needed. When used, a massive burst of flames is launched onto the battlefield, affecting the opponent strongly. However, this move will lower your Pokemon's special attacking ability by a lot, so use it very wisely. I'm proud to let you keep this and teach it to any of your Fire-type Pokemon." after Blaine's speech, Sean gladly accepted the Overheat TM and had added it to his bag.
