[Best Veteran March/May 2011] A new professor in town - Kanto Adventure PG13

The ball clicked. Sam and Vul both smiled. They had done it, they had caught a Shellder. Sam smiled, but suddenly became shockingly aware of his surroundings. It was dark. That was a long battle...a really long one. Sam walked over to pick up the pokeball, but it dissapeared as he touched it. He smiled, remembering what that meant. It was with Maple now. Still, he'd be there to switch out soon.

"Dang...well, good job, Vul!" Sam said, hugging Vul. Vul smiled and happily purred. Sam loved it when Vul was this happy. He heard a little bit of singing, and Iggly suddenly appeared. She was hopping towards Sam.

"Aww...here, Iggly. Why don't you play with Vul, Pika, Pidg and Umbre for a while? Gyara and I are gonna go for a nightime ride before bed. We need it. Have fun!" Sam said, tossing out all his pokemon. 4 more appeared and Sam knew this was gonna be a good night.

While five of his pokemon played on the deck, Sam hopped on Gyara and the two sped off. The sunset was beautiful. It brought back memories. Memories of his more peaceful childhood. His days when his family was still friendly to him. This brought back still more, as he remembered what the black clad man said, as this referred to the reason he ran. Now that he thought about it...why did he run? As much as he thought about it, it hurt his brain. It hurt, but things slowly came back to him. An arguement...his dreams...and then him just running. Now he remembered. His family hadn't wanted him to go through with his dream to become a trainer, so he ran away. Still, usually he would just argue it a little more and try harder to get it. It just didn't seem like him to run away like that. During all this, he hadn't noticed as a Tentacruel had snuck up on him.

"TENTA!" it cried as it shot what appeared to be spikes at Gyara.

"Crap! Toxic Spikes! Gyara get out of the...NO!" he yelled a second too late. Gyara had been hit. The spikes were lodged. Gyara was quickly taking damage. They were stuck in him!

"GGYYYYYAAAAAAARRRRRR.....RRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA...do...s..." Gyara said, weakening with every sound. Sam had to be fast. He had recently done some practice with Pidg, so Pidg could carry him about a hundred feet. The boat was...maybe 75? He could probably get there.

"Pidg! Help me out!" Sam yelled. Nothing happened for a second, but then Pidg came flying across the water.

"Pidgo!" Pidg screeched, reaching Sam.

"Great! Ready? We're gonna have to do this fast! Go, fly me to the boat as quick as you can!" he yelled. Pidg picked him up by his shoulders. Sam quickly returned Gyara to the pokeball. Tentacruel looked at him and shot a beam of bubbles.

"Dang! Bubblebeam?! Strong little Tentacruel...quick!" Sam yelled. Pidg nodded and flew towards the boat. It was slow, but they got there. Now on deck, Sam quickly ran to the communication room. Grabbing the video phone's phone, he dialed the one number he knew might be able to help...

"Hello?" Professor Maple asked, picking up the phone.

"Professor Maple! I need your help! Gyara's injured and I'm not sure how long he can hold on...please! Help me!" Sam yelled.

"Calm down, Sam. Now, what exactly happened?" Professor Maple asked.

"Well, we were out on a ride when we were attacked by a tentacruel. It was able to hit him with Toxic Spikes, which are causing him a slow and painful defeat!" Sam yelled. Maple thought for a second.

"Okay. Send him over quickly. We might be able to help, but he'll be unable to fight for...a couple of weeks. Don't worry, he'll be ready to go before the tournament, but only if you hurry!" Maple yelled. Sam nodded and put the ball in a nearby teleporter. It dissapeared. Sam was about to say thanks, but then he realized something. His newest pokemon might be able to help...

"Professor Maple...can you send over that Shellder I just caught? Is it healed?" Sam asked.

"Of course its healed! And yes, I can. Quickly, then? You'll have to fight hard, Sam. You know that, I assume. Well, here you go," she said, shoving a ball into the machine. It dissapeared.

A pokeball appeared on Sam's end. He grabbed it and ran.

"Hang up the phone! Good luck!" Maple yelled. Sam quickly ran back and put it on, thanking her quickly. He ran back up onto deck where many sailors were having their pokemon fight the Tentacruel. Sam looked around for the captain. He spotted him and an Eevee using Shadow Ball up on the main deck. He quickly ran up.

"Captain! What's wrong?" Sam asked. The captain turned to him.

"Its attacking us! Its strong and I'm not sure we can handle it...whoa!" the captain said as a tentacle crashed into the boat, knocking the contents of Sam's bag everywhere. His Thunderstone flew forward.

"A Thunderstone? Please! Trade me it for my Water Stone! I beg of you! If you do, we might survive!" the man yelled. Sam thought about it a second. If he kept it, Pika could evolve. If he didn't, the man could get a Jolteon and easily win. Come to think of it...he really didn't want Pika to evolve. Pika could easily beat a Raichu, as he proved back at the Vermillion Gym. Sam wasn't about to give in just for power.

"Sure. Here," Sam said, handing the man the Thunderstone. He gratefully took it and handed Sam a Water Stone in exchange. The man quickly touched his Eevee with it. It started to glow...and change shape. A few seconds later, the glowing stopped and a Jolteon now sat there.

"Okay...you should be able to use it now! THUNDERSHOCK!" the man yelled. Jolteon built electricity up in its body and launched it forward at an incredibly high speed. Sam was amazed how strong the newly evolved pokemon was and how well it handled its strength.

"Okay then! I know you're new to my team, but I'm counting on you! Shellder!" Sam yelled. The purple shelled pokemon came out and looked around. It quickly sighted Sam.

"Okay. I know you're new, but I trust you completely, Shellder. Ready to fight this Tentacruel?" Sam asked. Shellder looked nervous for a second, but a bit of confidence quickly appeared.

"Shellder shel!" it cried, ready to fight now.

"Great! Let's use your Icicle Spear!" Sam yelled. Shellder turned forward and shot a row of icicles at Tentacruel. Despite all the attacks it had taken from all the other pokemon and not felt a thing, this seemed to do real damage to it.

"Tenta...CRUEL!" Tentacruel cried, shooting a stream of bubbles at Shellder. The sailors quickly realized that Sam considered this his fight and no one else's. They backed off, returning their pokemon. All but the Captain, who seemed eager to help Sam.

"You'll never beat it alone! Let me help you out!" the Captain said. Sam nodded and the two prepared for an attack.

"Let's go with Withdraw to protect yourself!" Sam yelled. Shellder pulled back into its shell quickly.

"Now use Thundershock to hit it from the bubbles!" the Captain yelled, properly planning a good attack. Jolteon let loose a powerful move which traveled from bubble to bubble, eventually hitting Tentacruel. The sailors clapped as they dealt major damage to the powerful pokemon. The Tentacruel quickly shook this off, however, as it fired another round of bubblebeam.

"Dang it! How is it so strong?" Sam asked.

"Its a lot bigger than anything we've got. Wait. You're using a Shellder, right?" the captain asked, eying Sam's pokemon.

"Yeah...why?" Sam asked, confused by this question.

"Well...you could evolve your Shellder with that Water Stone. I think its the only way we could win..." the man said.

Sam nervously eyed Shellder and the crew. He had just caught Shellder and he wasn't sure now was the time to evolve it. He hadn't gotten used to it. Nervously, he walked forward.

"Shellder. We have only one chance to do this, but it involves you evolving. Are you ready for this?" Sam asked. Shellder nodded and nudged Sam's hand, where the stone was held.

"Okay...well, ha!" Sam yelled, touching Shellder with the stone. Shellder started to glow and its body expanded slowly. After about 5 seconds, it stopped glowing. In its place stood a grey shelled pokemon. It looked much stronger than the Shellder that was there a second ago.

"A...Cloyster?" Sam asked himself.

"Yes. Now! Have it use Aurora Beam!" the captain said, watching Sam's new pokemon.

"Oo...kay...use Aurora Beam!" Sam yelled, unsure of what this was going to do. Cloyster, on the other hand, seemed to understand perfectly. A rainbow colored beam fired forward at the Tentacruel, hitting it in the face. It fell backwards in pain. Sam was ready to take full advantage.

"What else can Cloyster use?" Sam yelled.

"Try Toxic Spikes! Its the move Tentacruel used on your Gyarados earlier. It'll stop it from getting any closer. Go!" he yelled.

Sam was nervous now. He'd seen this attack used, but it was on his Gyarados. He really didn't want to. He hated that move at this point.

"Wh...what else does it know?" Sam yelled.

"Um...how about Protect for when Tentacruel attacks? Other than that, use what it knew before this!" the captain yelled.

"Right! Icicle Spear!" Sam yelled. Cloyster shot several spears of ice forward, all of which hit Tentacruel straight in the head. It fell back a bit more, but then shot a beam of bubbles back.

"Okay! Use Protect to stop it from hitting you!" Sam yelled. Cloyster seemed to focus for a second but then a green barrier appeared around it. The bubbles hit it, but nothing got through. The barrier had stopped the damage!

"Awesome job! Ready to finish it off?" Sam asked.

"CLOY!" Cloyster cried, obviously prepared.

"Okay! Use Tackle to launch yourslef at full power, then use Withdraw to crash into it hard!" Sam yelled.

Cloyster stood still a second. Sam got worried. He wasn't sure his Cloyster could do this yet, but then it happened. Cloyster closed its shell and flew forward. It hit Tentacruel squarely in the face, causing it to sink back into the water. It looked angry, but it quickly swam away, fearing another attack. Sam smiled. Cloyster had won!

"You did it!" Sam cheered. Cloyster flew out of the water and back on deck. It took a second, but all the sailors realized what Sam had done. They started cheering.

"You did good, kid. Real good. Well, we'll be in Pallet tomorrow. We'd be honored if you'd join us for the night," the captain said, patting Sam on the back.

"That'd be great! Well, we're tired. Headin' off to bed. Night!" Sam yelled. A loud roar followed, which Sam translated as, "Good night!"

Sam fell into the bed, quickly falling asleep. That night, another vision came to him.

"Not bad...not bad at all. Too bad I was the one putting all that in your head. Still, not bad. You should have finished it, though. Make sure it never bothers anyone ever again," the black clad man said, appearing.

"You...why? Why are you so violent? Why are you doing this to me?!" Sam yelled, angry that the man was back.

"I told you before. That is for you to find out. Just remember, I am you. No one else. Remember that. Any other questions?" he asked, chuckling.

"Grr...I hate you. I WILL KILL YOU!" Sam yelled, lunging forward. The man quickly grabbed his now tight fist.

"Now now. That's quite the temper you have there. Looks like part of me has gotten to you. Well, I'm out. While you're in Pallet, though, why not visit that family of yours? Teach them that they were wrong. Show them your strength. Go on, you KNOW you want to!" the man said, dissapearing. Horrible laughter echoed behind him.

"Why? WHY ME?!" Sam yelled. This was getting annoying. This dark side of his...why? Why did it appear to him now? Why was it trying to tempt him? He knew these answers were probably obvious, but he couldn't think straight now. Slowly, this dream faded and Sam fell into a deep sleep.

(I got permission to hop through the rest of the battle).

After the battle between their first two Pokemon, there was a shock evolution by Zubat. Sean wasn't seeing such an event coming, though it was great for him to know his Pokemon are getting stronger.
Then, throughout the battle, their were some close attacks which entertained Jenny and Blaine who were watching them. The main part of the battle that Blaine was watching was the last part, where Sean was using his Growlithe against Natasha's Vulpix. Sean had already told Blaine that Growlithe was his strongest, so Blaine was to see if his Growlithe was good at battling and see if he could improve it. The battle was going on, and after so many attacks on each other, Blaine's face was very impressed by both of them. He could already tell that they were good trainers, but he was still going to see how the battle would turn out in the end. Finally, when the end of the battle had arrived, the winner, after making a strong Bite attack, was Growlithe, making Sean the winner of the battle.
"Awesome!" Sean's first comment once he had won the battle, after retreating Growlithe back inside the PokeBall. On the other side of the garden, Jenny was cheering for Sean's victory, as Blaine was applauding. As for Natasha, she shrugged and shook Sean's hand tom show she didn't mind and that she was used to losing against strong opponents.
The whole purpose of the battle was to show Sean's mum how much he had done on his journey, however the second point was to get advice of Blaine to see how well he was doing, and if it is ready to evolve yet. Sean was now ready to find out, so he went over to Blaine and had asked.
"So, how well do you think Growlithe did? What do you think would make it better?" he wanted to know and he wanted to know now.
"It was a very good battle. You kinda remind me of me back in the day, when I had a Growlithe. My advice would be to let it learn a couple more moves, then evolve it afterwards, because then your Growlithe will have better moves before it evolves." Blaine's advice put a smile on Sean's face, and had put him in a good mood. His mum was standing right next to Blaine, and had congratulated him.
"Well done, son. I always knew you would turn out to be such a great battler, from the moment you started your journey. I'm so proud, can't wait to see you later on at the Gym." she said too much, as Sean realized the time.
"Oh yeah, that's right, it's past lunch time now. Maybe it would be a good idea to go and show Natasha the island before I go to the Gym. Is that alright?" he was thinking of Natasha, and didn't want to leave her bored and only show her his house and the Gym. Jenny nodded and smiled.
"Of course it is. We were just about to go to the Gym anyways, to see if there are any mroe challenge. By the way, I've got a suprise for you later on. No, wait, two suprises. Here are the keys just incase." Jenny left Sean in suspense, after giving him the keys incase he needed them, then Sean and Natasha had walked out of the house, then onto the street going to the city, after waving goodbye to them.

Warren ran his fingers through his hair, sighing as he stared into the empty harbour. Months ago, when he'd first started his journey, it had been shaved right down to a stubble, but he'd been on the road for a long time and it was now creeping down over his forehead. A lot more than his hair had changed on this journey, however...

"Hey!" Warren snapped out of his reverie as he noticed a small fishing boat pulling in. A single fisherman stood in it, the handle to the outboard motor in one hand and an empty net in the other.

"Are you looking for a ride to the mainland?" he called, "Cause if so, I think I got a deal. You're a trainer, right?" he added, gesturing to the Pokeballs clipped onto Warren's belt. He nodded.

"Maybe. What sort of deal are you proposing?"

"Well, y'see, I'm a fisherman. Normally, I'll go out lookin' for Goldeen, or Magikarp if I'm desperate. Recently, though, I've hit a bit of a problem. The local Tentacool are getting a bit for their boots, an' they're chasin' away all the other fish. You can't even eat them, thanks to the poison. If I give you a ride to Pallet, I just want you to deal with any Tentacool we meet on the way: if ya scare enough of them, then maybe they'll get the hint and settle down a little." Warren tilted his head, considering the proposition. Poliwag would be able to fight the Tentacool underwater, obviously. Gastly, being a ghost, would have no worries with drowning or anything either. But Cubone would be useless against water types, Venonat's fur would just drag it down, Weepinbell was practically immobile on land and if Elekid gave off just one little spark, it would go straight through the water to their engine and then, they'd be stranded in the middle of the sea, surrounded by angry jellyfish. Not a great place to be.

"I guess that could work," Warren replied slowly, "But only two of my Pokemon will be any good in the water." The fisherman shrugged.

"I don't care how you do it, as long as you teach them a lesson."

Half an hour later, Warren held two of his Pokeballs tightly in his hands as Cinnabar slowly faded into the distance. Nearby, a Goldeen leapt out of the water, spinning around and billowing its fins before splashing down gracefully once more. Warren, ignoring it, scanned the water for the distinctive glowing red of a Tentacool. There! A pair of lights glowed faintly. Just a single Tentacool.

"Alright, Gastly, let's go!" he shouted, "Use Sucker Punch!" Gastly, grinning, dived into the water, somehow not even creating a splash. With the reflections on the water's surface, it was impossible to see what was happening until...a Tentacool, screeching, flew into the air and landed in the water with a loud splash. The fisherman gave a loud whoop as Gastly rose out of the water, cackling.

"Nice work, boy!" he called, "But I think you mighta pissed of his friends!" Warren growled as he saw what the man meant. A large group of flashing lights were emerging from the deep - around ten Tentacool from what Warren counted.

"Poliwag, we'll need you too!" he shouted, releasing the tadpole into the water, where it surface next to the boat.

"Alright! Gastly, use Confuse Ray and Poliwag, Supersonic!" The two of them nodded and Gastly flew forwards, its eyes releasing ethereal beams of light. Poliwag leapt out of the water, and screeched loudly, its sonic waves passing right over the Tentacool. For a second, nothing happened, then the light began to blink crazily and tentacles waved wildly, slapping the side of the boat, the surface of the water and the other Tentacool. Warren grinned as he surveyed the scene of utter chaos, him and his two Pokemon slowly drifting away from it. It wasn't to last, however. Shaking its head, one of the jellyfish detached from the pack and charged at the boat with a speed Warren would never have thought possible. Leaping into the air, it swung a tentacle right at him, catching him across the face. Warren swore as a poisonous barb dug into his cheek, then yanked it out as quickly as possible. The Tentacool, meanwhile, flopped on the deck of the fishing boat like (excuse the pun) a fish out of water. Warren looked down at it, grinned, then uttered four words that made the Tentacool's eyes go wide.

"Warren, use Mega Kick!" The jellyfish squealed as it was unceremoniously booted right of the deck to land in the seething mass behind them. Warren snarled angrily. Time to finish these losers.

"Poliwag, use Bubble! Gastly, use Night Shade!" The two attacks fired together, entwining around each other to strike the Tentacool with explosive force. Warren ducked as the water erupted, sending the confused Tentacool flying in every direction, landing in the water with a large splash. The fisherman gawped, his eyes wide.

"Well, I reckon you scared 'em off!" he cackled, looking as the Tentacool floated, unconscious, in the water. Looking down at his watch, he raised an eyebrow.

"We should be gettin' in to Pallet in about half an hour. You takin' the league challenge?" Warren nodded, glancing over to Poliwag, who was happily swimming alongside the boat.

"Well, I reckon your chances are pretty good if the rest of your team is like those two." Warren shrugged.

"Maybe. I'm pretty shocked I got this far, to be honest. I'll be happy if I reach the top eight...hey, look!" Warren stood, gazing into the distance. On the horizon, the mainland was beginning to appear, marked by a small cluster of building. Pallet Town. Home.

@Screw The Rules - Nice post. Great storyline, really imaginative way of using the prompts... well done (god, this sounds like a school report :P) Anyways onto the fun stuff...

Congratulations Poliwag grew to Level 23

Congratulations Gastly grew to Level 25 and is now ready to evolve into Haunter

After leaving the house, Sean and Natasha were back on the street of the estate, where they were a couple of hours ago. They were both going to the city, so Sean could show her what the island was like, aswell as where he liked to go.
The time was 4:00pm, so they had plenty of time to do what they liked, which gave Sean enough time to show Natasha around.
"So, where are we gunna go first?" Natsaha had asked.
"Erm... I'm not sure. There's a fossil museum and a research lab, a few restaurants, a pokemon center, a pokemart, and of course, the volcano." there was not many places for Sean to list, but one place in particular made Natasha speak.
"Ooh, Ooh! Let's go to the Fossil Museum! There's one in Pewter City where I come from, and I wanna see if this one is any different to the one there." Sean couldn't understand because it wasn't very ideal to him, but it was to her so he kindly accepted her request to go.
They arrived at the city square, where they could see the harbour they arrived from. The first thing they looked at was the huge volcano, which had an entrance like a cave. They weren't going to go over there yet, so instead, they passed the museum.
Inside the museum, there was a whole bunch of fossils being preserved, and some even being revived into real Pokemon.
"Whoa, check out them Pokemon. They're fossils! Man, I wish I could have found one of them fossils." unfortunately for her, they were rare. Sean didn't reply.
They both had spent a while around the museum, checking out things that interested them. While Sean was quite bored, he tried to hide it from Natasha so she wouldn't be offended. Once they were done, they had came back outside of the museum. Unbelieveably, they had spent a lot more time in the museum than they thought they had.
"So, where to next?" Sean was thinking of Natasha, rather than himself because she wanted her to have a good time rather than him.
"Actually, I am quite peckish at the moment-" after she ended her sentence, Sean's mouth immediately opened to speak.
"Ahh! I know the greatest place on the island to get some takeaway to eat fast. You're gunna love it." Sean grabbed her hand, and then they walked through the island, to some small restaurant which had a booth where they both stood in line to get some food to take away with them.
"So... Chips?" Sean suggested.
"With tomato ketchup and salt?" Natsha added.
"Of course. Anything you want." Sean was alright with her, and they agreed on it.
The line was getting shorter, but since there was so many people, it went to show that it was indeed a popular retaurant to go to. Finally, the person in front of them ahd finished with their order, Sean and Natasha were now in front of the counter and the man who had strange facial hair.
"Two cones of chips, both with tomato ketchup and salt." Sean got out his wallet after ending his order, then slapped his PokeDollars on the desk, leaving the man to collect it. In return, he handed back two portions of chips, both drizzled in red tomato ketchup and salt, in blue cones.
"Cheers!" Sean had thanked the man, then walking away from the restaurant and to the Pokemon Center.
"Let's go to the Pokemon Center. You know, because we'll be going to the volcano next. That alright?" he was done with showing her around because there wasn't that much left to show her, though she had agreed to it.
They went inside the Pokemon Center, and went over to Nurse Joy, getting their PokeBalls out.
"Please could you heal our Pokemon?" they had trouble holding their PokeBalls since they both had chip cones in their hands, Nurse Joy accepted them off them and had went into the room in which she would heal them.
They took their seats, and had started on their chips. One bite of one chip sent them both to another world for a few minutes. They tasted amasingly alongside the tomato ketchup and salt. Natasha made a compliment,
"These. Are. Amazing." she paused between each word to show that she was blown away by the taste. Sean had already finished them, since he loved the taste and couldn't get enough of them.
Out came Nurse Joy with their Pokemon, giving them back to them. She shown them out as they were done in the Pokemon Center.
Upon leaving, they threw their chip cones in the bin as they no longer needed them. They walked off in the dark blue sky.
It was now officially evening, and the time was 8:00pm. The perfect time for them both to explore the volcano and go to the Gym to have a big battle.
"Well, here it is." they finished walking to the other side of the island, to the volcano that was surrounded by huge plam trees.
The thing was huge, it made them feel like midgets compared to it. It felt like it was going to scare them both, but they were going to be okay. Sean knew they would be.
"Come on. We're not going to get anywhere standing here. We will be alright." they started to go into the volcano, after Natasha slightly hesitated.

OOC: Thank you sir. Can I have a gold star? XD

"Well, here we are!" Warren thanked the fisherman as he stepped off the boat. Pallet Town was right on the coast and he could already see his house. Quickening his pace, he pulled up in front of his front door, then stopped, grinning as a thought occurred to him.

"Gastly," he whispered, "Come out!" With a burst of smoke, the ghost emerged from its ball. Quickly, Warren bent down and whispered into where he thought its ear was. Slowly, its grin widened, until it almost split the small dark sphere right in two. Silently, it nodded to Warren, who immediately knocked on the door, then spun around and ducked around the side of the house.

"Hello?" Warren's father opened the door, staring outside at the seemingly empty front garden. A faint breeze blew past his legs, carrying a thin wisp of smog.

"Bloody pollution," he grumbled, slamming the door. Around the corner, Warren snuck back to the front door, then pressed his ear against it. For a second there was silence, then:

"GAAAASSS!"

"EAARRGGH!"

"Run for it!" Warren stepped smartly to the side as the door burst open and his parents flew outside, pursued by a large fog that seemed to be doing its best to try and cover them. Ending the chase, Gastly cackled, rematerialising as Warren's parents turned to see their son standing there, a smirk on his face. His mother's eyes bulged.

"WHAT ARE YOU PLAYING AT?" she bellowed as Warren burst out laughing.

"It's not my fault!" he claimed, "Gastly must have slipped through the letter box with out me noticing! He's really just being friendly!" Warren's father narrowed his eyes, then slowly chuckled.

"You haven't changed a bit, you know?" Warren sniggered as the three of them slowly made their way back into the house, Gastly drifting along behind them. Wandering through into the living room, he collapsed onto the couch, grinning as the old sights and smells reappeared. The small desk at one end where his father would usually be e-mailing somebody or other with some business proposition. The triangular dining table, which had been the battlefield for countless food fights. The overgrown back garden, filled with countless different species of weeds. Everything was just as it felt it should be.

"Well come on, then!" Warren glanced over at his mother, who had switched the TV off and sat down in the big armchair, "Tell us all about it!" Warren raised an eyebrow. Where to start? The badges, the battles, the best friends....the rivalries, the struggles, the dangers...maybe some details might be best not mentioned.

"It's been..." he started, struggling to summarise it all in one word"...shocking." His parents glanced at each other, confused.

"When you spend that long on the road, you start learning things. Not just about strategies and tactics, but about yourself, about life and...stuff," he finished weakly.

"Turning into a philosopher or something, are we?" his mother asked, amused, "Anyway, come on, let's meet the gang!" Warren rolled his eyes.

"Only as long as you promise never to refer to them as 'the gang' again. That's an expression reserved for people under fifty." Unclipping his Pokeballs, he laid them out on the table, picking up Poliwag's first. The tadpole emerged, chirping happily.

"Oh, it's so cute!" Warren rolled his eyes.

"Thanks, Mum. Poliwag might just surprise you, though. He's small, but he's tough. Next..." he released Weepinbell, his parents jumping slightly as the large plant appeared on the couch opposite.

"This guy's got me through a few tough battles. Defeated the Cerulean and Vermillion gyms all on his own," Warren commented, neglecting to mention that the first of those battles was slightly unorthodox.

"Next up, Cubone!" The small rodent burst out of its ball, grinning at its two new acquaintances, "Cubone's one of my key players - he's tough and surprisingly speedy." Picking up the next ball, he held it out, then laughed as he realised it was empty. Gesturing to the smoke cloud above their heads, he continued.

"Gastly, you've already...er...met. I got him in a trade with one of Professor Oak's protégés. My most recent capture, though, was this guy..." Warren laughed as his mother literally hid behind the sofa the second she saw the Elekid.

"Keep that thing away from me! I remember when you first got it and it appeared at Maple's! She's still cleaning up after it!"

"Chill out, mum, he's fine. He was just a bit...confused, after he was caught. He's a good fighter, though, got me through the last gym battle after one almighty showdown. And, last but not least," Warren released his final Pokemon, "Venonat!" His parents gasped as they saw his shining blue eyes.

"Venonat's been sitting on the sidelines recently, but I've some plans involving him for the league." his parents, looked around at the team, smiling and shaking their heads.

"It's kinda hard to believe this is happening," his father said, exhaling slowly, "To be honest, I never really thought this would get very far, but now..." he stood up, "You've proved me wrong. Well done, Warren." He pulled his son into a quick hug, ignoring the sounds of disgust and desperate struggling. "You've done us proud." Warren grinned in spite of himself, leaning back on the sofa.

"Well, I haven't won the league yet. There's one more badge to go before I even get there." he glanced to the window. It was dark outside. "I'll stay here tonight, but I'm leaving again in the morning," he explained, gazing out into the night. In the darkness, something stirred. Warren stood as he saw a slight movement, but there was nothing outside. Shaking is head, he pulled the curtains across.

"I'm pretty tired," he yawned, "I reckon I'm gonna hit the sack. Is it okay if these guys kip in here too?" His mother looked a little disappointed, but nodded.

"Sure."

"Thanks. Poliwag, Weepinbell and Venonat - the garden's pretty overgrown and there's a pond at the bottom. It should be okay for you out there. Cubone, Elekid, I can rig up some baskets and blankets in the spare room or whatever. Gastly..." Warren scratched his head, "I've got no idea where or even if you normally sleep, but there's an attic filled with old spooky stuff if you want." The pokemon grinned, dashing out into the garden, up the stair and in Gastly's case, straight through the ceiling.

"I'll see you tomorrow, I guess," Warren called, heading to the stairs, "Good night!"

Outside, hiding in the dark, the boy shifted again, gazing into the house as the lights slowly blinked out. His fingers, long and thin, danced to his pocket and clamped tightly onto a Pokeball.

"Soon," he whispered to the creature inside, "Soon..."

Warren grinned reluctantly as he gazed down Route 1. The grass was still wet with dew and mist, dank and mysterious, hung in the air like a shroud. Something about today felt...special. That was understandable, though - he was on his way to the last gym.

"Hey! Hey, Warren!" Spinning around, he saw a slightly smaller figure hurrying after him, coming from Pallet Town.

"Danny?" He grinned as the younger trainer approached, slowing to a stop.

"Yeah. Well, I went to the gym yesterday, y'see. I came back, cause I heard that you were back in Pallet. It was pretty late by the time I arrived, though, so I thought I'd try and find you in the morning. But by the time I got up, you'd already left!" Warren grinned, shaking his head. Then, something sunk in.

"Wait, you've already got your eighth badge?" Danny nodded proudly.

"Yeah, but it was a tough one. You're going to have to really fight for it, Warren." Warren shrugged dismissively.

"Meh, if you beat him, I won't have any trouble." Danny rolled his eyes.

"I'm not as weak as you think you know." Now it was Warren's turn to roll his eyes.

"Please. The only time you've beaten me is when I was stuck with just Poliwag. And he's toughened up a lot since then."

"What about when Jigglypuff beat your Mankey?"

"Well, that was clearly just a fluke." Danny smirked.

"Fine, if you're so tough, why don't you prove it?" He held up a pair of Pokeballs. "Two on two sound good?" Warren shrugged.

"Why not? I've got plenty of time to deal with you and still beat the Gym Leader before lunch time." Danny raised an eyebrow.

"Let's get started, then. I'll open with Rhyhorn!" Warren paused. Weepinbell and Poliwag both had a large advantage over the rocky rhino that emerged in front of him, but who to go with? Poliwag had proven himself, that was for sure...but to take down Rhyhorn, he'd need something big, bulky and powerful.

"Weepinbell, let's get going! Sleep Powder!" Danny frowned as Weepinbell released a large cloud of blue, glittering, spores, but ignored it.

"Hunker down and take it," he called, seemingly unconcerned. Rhyhorn nodded, then curled its legs inwards and lay down on the ground, its rocky plates crashing together. Its eyes flickered as the Sleep Powder drifted into its nostrils, then fell closed. Warren was distinctly unimpressed.

"If you won the gym battle by lying down and going to sleep, then Viridian's Gym leader must really suck. Weepinbell, let's use Wrap!" Now Danny laughed, as the sprout on the plant's head quickly entangled the snoring rhino.

"A Normal type attack? Please. You could at least TRY to win." Indeed, Rhyhorn was completely ignoring the attack, still snoring lightly as Weepinbell squeezed with all its might.

"Fine. Vine whip!" Warren shouted, feeling a little stupid for ordering his last attack. This one didn't seem particularly successful either, though. Weepinbell drew back and lashed out, slapping Rhyhorn straight across the face. Unfortunately, the rock type just growled faintly, then turned its head. Warren gasped.

"What the hell is up with that thing?" Danny just chuckled.

"Well, Vine Whip is a physical attack, Warren, and Rhyhorn have strong physical defensive capabilities...hey, would you look at that?" He gestured to Rhyhorn, who was beginning to shake its head and stand up once more. It didn't look the slightest bit phased.

"Our turn to attack," Danny drawled, "Let's use Magnitude, Rhyhorn!" The pokemon leered as it reared up on to its hind legs, then crashed down, seismic waves spreading out from its feet. Warren stumbled as the earth shook beneath him, while Weepinbell, devoid of any feet to steady itself with, rolled backwards several times, landing flat on its face. Moaning, it struggle into an upright position.

"Follow up with Horn Attack!" Rhyhorn bellowed, a terrifying sound like grating rocks, then began to charge. Warren, thinking quickly, called out once more:

"Trip him with Vine Whip!" Weepinbell, focusing its strength, fired the brown shoot forwards and wrapped it around the rhino's front leg. Leaping to the side as Rhyhorn passed by, it yanked sharply and it stumbled, before crashing to the ground and skidding to a halt. Standing up, it shook its head, then turned to Weepinbell once more. Even now, it barely seemed hurt.

"Poison Powder!" he barked, on an inspiration and Weepinbell exhaled another gust of powder, purple this time. Once again, the cloud of spores descended on Rhyhorn, but this time, it hacked and coughed rather than falling into a blissful slumber. Shaking wildly, it blew away most of the powder, though it looked decidedly unwell. The poison was taking hold. Danny nodded appreciatively.

"Nice move. Your physical attacks aren't going to do squat, so you've attacked in the only way you can...that poison will take a while to work, though, and we can easily take your Weepinbell down in the meantime." Warren snorted derisively.

"Fine, try another Horn Attack. I'm sure your Rhyhorn loves getting thrown flat on his face." Danny smirked.

"That was a one-trick pony. I already know how to deal with it. Let me demonstrate. Rhyhorn, Horn Attack!" once more, the rhino charged, but Warren just yawned, bored.

"Trip it," he said dully and once again, Weepinbell shot to the side and fired its vine. Danny grinned.

"Stomp!" he shouted and Warren's eyes shot wide as Rhyhorn reared up onto its hind legs, skilfully dodging the vine, only to come crashing down and pinning Weepinbell to the ground by its shoot. The plant wailed and flapped madly, but it was caught like a fish on a line.

"Reel it in and use Stomp on the body!" Danny ordered, clearly relishing the moment. Rhyhorn complied, grabbing the shoot with its jaws and flicking it, pulling Weepinbell into striking distance. Raising its foot once more, Rhyhorn drove it straight at Weepinbell's face. Terrified of getting squished, Weepinbell rolled to the side, wailing as the foot caught its leaf instead. Warren scowled. This was not going well, to say the least. Noticing that its shoot was now free he called out as Rhyhorn lifted its foot once more:

"Catch it with Vine Whip!" he shouted desperately and Weepinbell quickly ensnared the foot in its vine. Growling angrily, Rhyhorn pushed down, while Weepinbell thrust up as hard as it could, desperate not to get squished. Nevertheless, Rhyhorn's foot was slowly descending.

"Quickly, Growth!" Warren shouted, remembering Weepinbell's most neglected move. The plant concentrated and its vine glowed a faint green, before bulging, thickening as it suddenly grew bigger and stronger. Shouting angrily, Weepinbell pushed once more and, to the amazement of both trainers, it slowly began to win the battle. Danny was speechless.

"Rhyhorn weigh two hundred and fifty pounds!" he shouted, "How is your Weepinbell holding him up?" Warren grinned.

"I told you I was good, Danny. Besides, your Rhyhorn is weakening from the poison." Rhyhorn was indeed looking ill as it finally gave up, wrenching its foot away and backing off a few feet. Weepinbell raised itself up once more, grinning victoriously. This battle wasn't over yet, though.

"Rhyhorn, we need to take control! Magnitude again!" Warren braced himself as Rhyhorn reared up, but was thrown off his feet as it crashed down and a shockwave almost three times as big as before shook the ground beneath him. Weepinbell, much shorter and lighter, was thrown high into the air.

"Now, Horn Attack!" Danny ordered and Rhyhorn positioned itself beneath the flying plant. Warren gritted his teeth. With Weepinbell airborne, there was no way to avoid the attack. He had to take it head on.

"Vine Whip!" he shouted and Weepinbell, focusing, fired its shoot at Rhyhorn's neck. The rhino gritted its teeth, pain from the venom evident on its face, but it could last one more attack. Weepinbell, already travelling fast from the fall, gave one last yank to add yet more momentum and smashed right into the rhino's head, throwing up a huge cloud of dust. Warren gasped as it settled, revealing two Pokemon who were both definitely not fit to battle. Rhyhorn was panting heavily and its eyes were closed. Weepinbell had a large purple bruise forming on its forehead and a black eye. It was also moaning plaintively. Warren smirked.

"I guess we'll call that a draw then?" Danny nodded as they both returned their Pokemon.

"I doubt you'll be able to do much against my next Pokemon, though." He threw the Pokeball and it burst open in a flash of light, revealing a stout, blue turtle with elegant fins on its head. A Wartortle. Warren raised an eyebrow.

"You're using your starter? Then I guess that I'll use mine. Poliwag, let's go!" The tadpole emerged, looking a little intimidated by the other Pokemon, which was a foot taller and almost twice its weight. Danny noticed its flinch.

"I'm not sure, Warren. Remember the first time we battled? You barely landed a hit on him, but Poliwag got pretty beaten up. You sure you want that to happen again?" Warren snorted.

"Enough talking, Danny. It's time to battle!"

OOC: Yay a post! It had been 5 days since the last one!

@Screw The Rules - Great post. Brilliant rival battle!

Congratulations Weepinbell grew to Level 23 and learned Acid

As entering this volcano that looked as if it was going to be a frontier, sean was impressed by the creativity of how a Gym was fitted inside of it. He could tell that the battle that he would have later would be brilliant and so fun due to being inside a real volcano.
Luckily for them, the volcano was dormant, so there were no worries about eruption, although the darkness was surely going to make them afraid. While walking through this darkness, Sean realized that he had no torch which scared them further, but he knew they would be fine, both of them.
Getting furhter away from the enterance, Sean and Natasha could hear noises, Pokemon noises. It was intriguing to hear that wild Pokemon were also in this volcano, it's like a whole training area for them. Once again though, Natasha found it scary that she was surrounded by Pokemon in the darkness.
Then, there was no light as they went further into the volcano. Now they were scared as the noises grew louder and they could not see where they were going.
"Oh great, now what?" Natasha was impatient by the darkness, and wanted something to do about it. Then, Sean came up with a good idea.
"Not to worry. Golbat, come out!" Sean got a PokeBall from his pocket, then opened it up to release Golbat from the PokeBall.
"You can see in the dark. Fly us through the volcano and to the Gym!" while they were actually using Golbat, which was rather mean, Golbat didn't mind and did as it was told. It kindly let Sean and Natasha sit on it, then started to flap its wings then its speed rising faster, sending them through the corridors of the volcano.
Unfortunately, they both still couldn't even see where they were going, only Golbat could do that. However, since Golbat could see in the dark and was flying them to the Gym, there was no problem.
Then, as they kept flying through the maze of the volcano, they could see light. This was because of a pool of lava that illuminated one part of the volcano. They could now sense that they were not as far from the Gym as they were before, thanks to Golbat for flying them through.
While also flying through the volcano, they could feel hotter spells in the temperature, which was bad for Sean since he was prone to hot temperatures. This temperature rose and rose at they flown through, but Sean could keep it together despite lots of sweating and exhaustion. Natasha was still holding it together fine, however.
Then, once again, they could see more light. This time, it wasn't from a pool of lava, but from two candles which were on top of two big stands, that shone golden light around the corridor.
"Okay, Golbat. We're here. Thanks for the help." Sean congratulated Golbat after they got off it, then pushed the button on the PokeBall to retreat it back inside.
They both approached the two doors, that were both molten rocks like the rest of the volcano. They both knew that this could only be the Gym since it had two candles right beside it, looking like a special place.
Once they ended up at the doors, Sean put his ear to the door just incase, to hear Blaine and Jenny having a chat about their last battle.
"I wonder if they're nearly here. After practicing against the last guy and winning, my own son won't be as hard." she sounded confident in herself, like any other Gym Leader, but she wasn't a Gym Leader so the battle against her wouldn't matter as much as the battle against Blaine himself.
Then, interrupting their conversation, Sean and Natasha walked through each one of the double doors.
"Ahh, you're both here. I was just chatting to Blaine about my last battle. And guess what Sean, I want you to battle me first, just to see if you can beat me." she got to the point straight away.
"Fine, I could use a good practice battle anyway, so I can show you myself. Natasha, enjoy watching." Sean turned over to Natasha, who nodded her head in reply to Sean.

"Double Slap!" Warren barked and the battle began, Poliwag charging forwards and spinning on one foot, its tail slapping Wartortle viciously across the face. The turtle stumbled at the first blow, but ducked under the second and responded with a Tackle, throwing Poliwag backwards with its superior size and weight. The tadpole flew into the air, but rolled as it landed and sprung back up, ready to keep battling.

"Follow up with Rapid Spin!" Poliwag threw itself to the side as Wartortle pulled its limbs into the air and flew towards it, spinning wildly. It desperately stood up again, but not quickly enough to avoid the second rapid spin. Squealing, it was thrown to the ground by the flying turtle, who quickly landed, spun around and eyed up Poliwag arrogantly. Wartortle knew it had the upper hand, but it was still a little cautious. After all, it had fought Poliwag twice before, won once and lost once. Nevertheless, it had been a Squirtle both those times - much smaller and weaker. Grinning, it stepped forwards once more, opened its mouth and blew out a huge multitude of bubbles. Poliwag responded with an equally powerful Bubble attack and the two streams met in midair, bubbles popping left, right and centre. Tiny droplets of water flew into the air, resembling rain as they cascaded down onto the impromptu arena. Danny rolled his eyes.

"Come on, Water-type attacks won't do anything... give it a Bite!" The turtle charged, its mouth wide open, but Warren wasn't going to just stand there.

"Body Slam!" Wartortle skidded to a halt, but was too slow to get out of the way and was smacked head on, rolling head over heels before skidding to a halt on its stomach. Gritting its teeth, it stood up, growling angrily, but it was swaying a little unsteadily. Poliwag, also a little dazed from the attack, shook its head and blinked a few times, but looked ready to keep fighting.

"Water Gun!" the two trainers shouted this next order together and the attacks were fired in unison. Smashing together in the middle of the two fighters, the sheer power drove the Pokemon backwards. Wartortle, a strong Pokemon, dug its feet in and braced itself, but Poliwag simply didn't have the weight necessary. Despite its best efforts, it was driven backwards, feet digging furrows in the ground, until, finally, it broke contact and leapt high into the air, its tail barely flicking the jet of water that flew under its feet. As it peaked, it spun and eyed up Wartortle, the two locking gazes for a fraction of a second. As Poliwag flew down, tail spinning around for a Double Slap, Wartortle grinned, then thrust its hands towards the falling tadpole. Immediately, a shining green barrier formed around the turtle and Poliwag squealed indignantly as its tail was repelled by the mysterious force. Angry, it spun around as it landed, Wartortle lowering its hand and allowing the barrier to fade. Danny grinned.

"Protect's a pretty useful move, huh? No matter what you throw at me, I can stop it in its tracks!" Warren let out a long, thoughtful breath.

Protect is an unstoppable defence...but it's not all that reliable. If I can force him into using it over and over, Poliwag might just be able to break through. That'll only work if he's on the defensive, though. So we'll have to go on the offensive! Warren glanced over at Poliwag. Both of the Pokemon were tired, but ready to keep fighting.

"Alright, let's use Water gun!" he called to Poliwag, "But this time, don't let up. Give it short, quick bursts and keep moving!" The tadpole took a deep breath, then attacked, leaping from side to side as it fired short, powerful jets of water at the grinning turtle. Laughing, Wartortle raised its hands and the green barrier flashed as the water splashed harmlessly onto the ground. Wartortle didn't even need to bother moving.

"Double Slap!" Danny rolled his eyes as Poliwag spun closer, its tail slapping at Wartortle, but never breaking through. He sighed as Warren called out once more.

"Water Gun on the ground, then Body Slam!" Poliwag complied, firing a powerful jet of water into the ground. Rocketed upwards by the powerful force, it spun and threw itself right at Wartortle. Bored, the turtle raised its hands. But this time, nothing happened. Wartortle just had time to realise this before it was struck head on by a high-speed tadpole. Stumbling, it clutched its head in pain as Poliwag leapt back to its feet.

"Finish it with one more Double Slap!" Warren shouted as Wartortle blinked, dazed. Poliwag jumped, spun and smacked it right across the face. Wartortle spun from the blow, then gave one last, defeated "Waaarrrr..." before collapsing backwards onto the ground.

"YES!" Warren cheered as he jogged forwards to Poliwag, scooping it up, much to the tadpole's surprise.

"Great battle, runt!" he congratulated, ignoring the look of utter bemusement on Poliwag's face. Still grinning, he returned it, then glanced up at Danny, who had also returned his Pokemon and was looking down, dejectedly.

"Y'know," he muttered, poking at the ground with his toe, "I might not even bother with the league." Warren frowned.

"What? Why not?"

"Wartortle's my best fighter and you just beat him. How am I meant to have any chance of winning?" Warren snorted derisively.

"You think I have a chance? I'm aiming for the top eight, if I'm lucky. I'm going to the league because this could well be the only chance I have...look, think about it this way, are you going to regret it more if you do go or if you don't?" Danny shrugged.

"I guess..." Warren sighed, rolling his eyes.

"Look, how about you come watch me destroy the Viridian Gym Leader to cheer you up?" Danny grinned in spite of himself.

"I'll come," he answered reluctantly, "but only because it's gonna be so funny when you get your butt handed to you."

@Screw The Rules - Great battle! I'm not sure I'm a fan of Danny's attitude though....

Congratulations Poliwag grew to Level 25 and learned Bubblebeam. Poliwag is also now ready to evolve into Poliwhirl

Warren grinned as he approached the Viridian Gym, Danny following behind.

"My last badge is just metres away!" he called to the younger trainer, who just rolled his eyes in response.

"It's a ground type gym," he informed Warren, "So you probably want to use your Poliwag and Weepinbell...it's a three on three battle, though, so I don't know who you'll use as your third fighter." Warren scratched his head.

"Well, Elekid's obviously out. Venonat's tough, but also at a disadvantage. Cubone isn't at a disadvantage...but he doesn't really have an advantage, either. I'm probably best off with Gastly. Levitate will keep him out of the way of most of the Ground-type attacks." Danny nodded.

"I guess that makes sense." Warren nodded, pausing as he reached the front doors. Picking the three balls out of his pocket, he released his three fighters, looking at them critically.

"These guys are tough, no doubt...but this is the last gym. I need just a little bit more power." Digging deeply into another pocket he held up a small, glittering stone. It was green, with an image of a leaf embossed on the front. Danny frowned curiously.

"Is that a Leaf Stone?" Warren nodded, looking up at the expectant Weepinbell.

"You ready?" It nodded. Well, it nodded as much as is possible when your entire body is a head. Grinning, Warren tossed it the stone and it caught it neatly in its mouth. For a second, nothing happened, but then, a glow came over the entire creature. Poliwag and Gastly looked on surprised then, much to Warren's surprise, they also began to glow. The two trainers gasped as white light poured from all three Pokemon and they slowly began to change shape. Poliwag grew much larger, its tail shrinking into its body and two short arms pushed their way out of its body, complete with gloved hands. Gastly solidified, growing to be almost as big as Warren himself. The gas that surrounded it becoming much more tangible and thick; it rearranged itself, turning from a round ball into a spiked triangle. Meanwhile, two claw like hands detached from its body and floated, eerily separate. Weepinbell, already the largest of the three, changed rather dramatically. First, its mouth and eyes flipped over, then moved to the top of its growing head, a third leaf growing to cover it as the two on its side expanded, becoming broader and longer. The shoot shrank back into its body and another, much longer and tipped with a small yellow leaf, shot out of the base of its new leaf. Finally, the glow faded on all three Pokemon, leaving three completely new creatures. Poliwhirl, Haunter and Victreebel. Warren laughed happily as the three of them examined themselves and each other. Poliwhirl and Haunter seemed especially happy to finally have their own hands, though Warren was a little confused as to what had happened to Poliwhirl's mouth. Bending down, he poked it, confused.

"So how exactly do you eat?" Poliwhirl pointed to the centre of its swirl and Warren looked closer. Right at the centre was a small mouth, hidden by the dark swirl. Warren raised an eyebrow.

"Fair enough...anyway..." Warren looked at his newly evolved team, "Let's go!" Standing up, he pushed the doors open, his team walking, hopping or floating behind him.

The gym was huge. Not just regular big, but inexplicably gigantic. The entire room was filled with rocks littering a sandy floor, imitating a desert. Lined in the sand was a huge arena and at the other end stood a tall man, seemingly about twenty years of age and looking absolutely ridiculous, his long, purple hair clashing horribly with his red tracksuit. Warren stifled a laugh.

"What, did a Smeargle vomit on you or something?" The man sighed, turning to face Warren.

"I am the leader of Viridian's Gym. My name is Warren." Warren (that's the trainer) gasped.

"What?"

"Well...that's my name as well..." The gym leader rolled his eyes.

"Of course. Now, I assume you're here for a battle?" Warren (that's the trainer again) nodded.

"That's right."

"Very well. Referee! We have a challenger!" Another man, dressed in the typical black and white outfit, hurried through from a back room. Taking his place at the edge of the battlefield, he began the speech.

"The Gym battle between Warren, the challenger and Warren, the Gym Leader, will now begin! Each trainer will use three Pokemon. The challenger may make substitutions at any time, the Gym Leader may not. Now, Warren and, er, Warren, release your first Pokemon!" Warren (the Gym Leader this time) nodded and threw his first Pokeball. With a flash of light, a huge pokemon appeared on the field, a rhino covered in rocky plates. Another Rhyhorn. Warren frowned. Victreebel had experience in taking these down, but it was his strongest fighter and he wanted to save it for last. Nevertheless, Rhyhorn was powerful and Poliwhirl might not have enough sheer strength to bring it down. Haunter was the same.

"Alright, Victreebel," he called, "Let's go!" He could always call it back if it looked like it was going badly. The Gym Leader nodded sagely.

"A good choice. Let's begin. Rhyhorn, let's try your Fury Attack!" At once, the rhino charged, jabbing wildly with its horns. Warren grinned.

"Vine Whip!" he shouted and Victreebel lashed out with its shoot. The horns and the vines met again and again, smacking together with audible cracks. Neither Pokemon was breaking through the other's defences and Rhyhorn, annoyed, retreated a few steps, ending its attack.

"Let's use Stun Spore, Victreebel!" The plant screeched as a cloud of orange powder flowed out of its mouth. Rhyhorn, too slow to dodge it, coughed violently as the paralytic effect took hold. Warren (the Gym Leader) frowned.

"Alright! Let's show off your new moves Victreebel! Use Razor Leaf!" The plant screeched again, swinging its leaf arms at Rhyhorn. Tiny leaves, sharp as knives, detached from them and flew at Rhyhorn, striking it head on. The rhino groaned angrily as the leaves bounced off, leaving small nicks in its stony armour, but it tenaciously struggled back to its feet, awaiting a command. It got one.

"Horn Attack!" Once more, the rhino lowered its head and lumbered forwards, gathering speed as it approached Victreebel. Warren raised an eyebrow.

"Trip it!" Victreebel leapt to the side as Rhyhorn thundered past, throwing out its vine and catching its foot. The rhino stumbled, then Victreebel gave a quick, sharp yank and it crashed to the floor, skidding to a halt at Warren's (the trainer's) feet. He glanced down at it as it struggled to rise to its feet, only for its leg's to give. It collapsed on the floor, moaning. Warren (the Gym Leader) sighed in annoyance as he returned it, then held out another Pokemon.

"Alright, Cubone, time for a battle!" Warren (the trainer) blanched as the rodent appeared on the battlefield. Unlike his own, this Cubone seemed to fit the stereotype - it was moaning quietly and its shoulders sagged. He rolled his eyes.

"Give me a break," he muttered under his breath, but the Gym Leader ordered an attack.

"Bonemerang!"

"Vine Whip!" Once again, the shoot lashed out, but this time, it wrapped around the flying club, catching it in midair. The rodent gasped, then squealed angrily as Victreebel smashed the club hard against Cubone's skull, cracking the weapon in two. Warren (the trainer) grinned, but the others looked shocked.

"Warren!" Danny whispered angrily, "Do you have any idea how long it normally takes a Cubone to find a bone that it can use! You could have easily just thrown the club away without breaking it!" Indeed, the rodent was not looking happy. Caught somewhere between grief and rage, it charged forwards without waiting for an order, lowering its skull for a Headbutt. Warren (the trainer) nodded, a plan already in his mind.

"Lay down and open up!" he shouted and, as Cubone drew near, Victreebel collapsed onto the ground, its top leaf flying up. Cubone, its head down, didn't notice this and flew straight into its mouth. Warren (the gym leader) gasped as it reared up and snapped down the leaf on Cubone's struggling legs.

"You can't KILL the opposition for a badge!" His enemy groaned.

"I wasn't planning on ordering a Swallow. Victreebel, use Spit Up!" Victreebel widened its throat, then, with one snapping motion, flicked the leaf back and squeezed tightly, catapulting Cubone high into the air. Screeching loudly, it grazed the roof of the gym, before falling back down and smashing hard into the ground. It groaned feebly and didn't get up. Warren (the trainer) laughed as it was also returned.

"You call this a Gym Battle? You haven't even landed one hit yet!" Warren (the leader) scowled.

"I wouldn't get too cocky if I was you. You haven't seen my last pokemon yet." Behind Warren (the trainer), Danny stepped forwards and whispered into his ear,

"Be careful, Warren. This last one's always a surprise." He waved him away, annoyed.

"Whatever it is, Victreebel can handle it."

"I'm not sure-"

"Well I am..." He glanced at the gym leader, "Well are you going to release it or not?" He raised an eyebrow, grinning way more than someone losing three-one really should be.

"As you wish...let's go, NIDOQUEEN!" Victreebel screeched in surprise as the large, vaguely dinosaur-like Pokemon appeared on the field. It was shorter than Victreebel, but much more heavily built and it definitely looked tough.

"Right, let's use Scratch!" At once, it thundered forwards, arm raised. Victreebel responded with Vine Whip, wrapping it tightly around the limb, but Nidoqueen continued regardless.

"Double Kick!" Before Victreebel could respond, Nidoqueen spun, smacking Victreebel into the air with a gigantic kick. Grabbing hold of the vine still attached to her arm, Nidoqueen pulled the plant back and kicked it once more, right in the face. Victreebel fell to the ground, unconscious. Warren (the trainer) gaped in surprise.

"I warned you, Warren!" Danny hissed, but he was too shocked to reply. Silently returning Victreebel, his hand hovered over the other two balls. Poliwhirl was tough, but Haunter would be unaffected by that dangerous Double Kick.

"Let's go, Haunter! Sucker Punch!" The huge ghost materialised on the battlefield, already swinging one of its new fists. Nidoqueen, displaying unusual agility for its size leapt under the fist, rolled forwards and leapt again before smashing onto the ground. Chips of rock flew up, pelting Haunter. The ghost flew back, looking angry, but it wasn't given a chance to catch its breath.

"Poison Sting!" Nidoqueen opened its mouth and roared, but with the sound came thousands of tiny poisonous barbs. Haunter roared as they somehow dug into its gaseous form, shot right through and dug into the wall behind. Haunter roared in pain as it struggled vainly, stuck on the wall. Nidoqueen Grinned widely, before bending to grab one of the large rocks littering the floor. Haunter struggled more desperately as she raised it above her head, but he was stuck fast. Warren (the trainer) shielded his face as the rock smashed into Haunter and shattered into hundreds of tiny fragments. He looked up as Haunter slowly drifted down to earth, knocked out. Gritting his teeth, he returned the ghost and looked down at Poliwhirl. He'd expected it to be looking terrified but its recent evolution had emboldened it and it was clenching its fists, looking angry. Warren (the trainer) looked down at it and nodded. It hopped forwards as its trainer exhaled nervously.

"Nearly a year on the road," he muttered to himself, "Nine Pokemon, seven badges, countless battles, plenty of new rivals, friends and enemies, but after all that..." he paused, "everything comes down to this."

The battle was about to begin by both challengers sending out their Pokemon. It was going to be very weird for Sean to be battling to his mum, therefore it would be even worse for him to lose, after everything he bragged about to her.
Blaine was in the background, not cheering on anybody yet but appluding them both. Sean couldn't wait to battle him, but since the battle was already about to begin he had to finish this one first.
If Jenny was good enough to be helping Blaine out with Gym battles, then Sean was expecting a very decent Pokemon that would be tough to handle a battle against. Since Jenny was married to Blaine, he was certain that it would be a Fire-type, an interesting Fire-type. One that wouldn't be comman and would be a mysterious battle, while also being a cute Pokemon knowing her personality.
After the pause, Sean began to send his Pokemon out which was easy,
"Come on, Growlithe!" Sean threw the PokeBall to the ground, releasing his energetic Growlithe which was happy and ready for a battle like it always was. Jenny was not suprised, as she had saw before that it was his best Pokemon, now she was going to reveal hers,
"Let's do this, Charmeleon!" she then tossed the Pokemon to the ground, unleashing a crimison red lizard. It was rather cute, but had a very strong spirit which Sean could tell in his eyes that it was going to be a strong battle.
Now that both Pokemon were out of their balls, they could start the battle. It was going to be hard, since Charmeleon was a strong Fire-type, although Sean's Growlithe was highly experienced so he was not at all worried. Sean was the one to command their Pokemon first.
"Good. Let's get this started with a Leer." Sean decided to use his regular strategy of weakening the opponent before attacking it. Growlithe got up on all fours, and got to look Charmeleon in the eyes. Then, it started to angle its eyes in a scary motion, then made its eyes glow a deep, shiny gold. This colour made the stare very intimidating, making Charmeleon slightly nervous and less defensive.
Jenny was still very confident in her Charmeleon, like Sean's relationship with Growlithe. This made no difference though, as in the end of the day the winner was the one who ends up winning the actual battle. Jenny was ready.
"Good, but I'll show you how to really make an attack rock. Use Bite!" she was sounding younger than she was. Charmeleon was very alert and acted immediately, by running on its two legs over to Growlithe, then taking a snap at it. The attack was quite strong, and it hurt a little.
"See. Good start, eh?" Jenny felt young again, trying to prove his son wrong, and that she indeed was a strong trainer. Sean was rather impressed.
"I guess, but my Growlithe can do it better. Just you see. Growlithe, you too use Bite!" so far, Sean noticed how both of the Pokemon shared similar attacks. As Charmeleon did, Growlithe jumped up, then charged over to Charmeleon at a swift speed, then opened up its jaws to bite Charmeleon. Despite her bragging, Jenny's attack was not as strong as Sean's attack.
"Meh. Well, I guess I'll show you what else Charmeleon can do. Use Scratch!" she was going to use attacks that would do damage for now, rather than weaken Growlithe first. Charmeleon went back over to Growlithe, to this time swipe its claw across Growlithe. This didn't hurt as much as Bite, fortunatley for Sean.
The battle was now about to get kicked up into another gear, and no Pokemon had still used a Fire-attack, although they are both Fire-typed. This is probably because they both knew how they would both be quite unaffective. Sean was ready to do his next command.
"Fine. Use Bite again!" while being repetitive, Sean knew it was the best attack to use and he wouldn't stop using it until the time was good to use other attacks. Once again, Growlithe got up on its legs, then quickly ran across the volcano floor to Charmeleon, to take a bite on Chameleon which did look as if it hurt, as Charmeleon let out a girly squeak.
"If this is all you're going to use, then fair enough. My Chameleon is quite strong, and it will only make things more easy for me if you use that move over and over. Take it from me, Sean. I have improved more than you." it was clear that Sean got his vein attitude from his mum rather than his dad, since she too liked to brag.
"Now then, Charmeleon. Use Dragon Rage!" this attack Sean didn't know of, he was not used to Dragon moves being used on his Pokemon. Charmeleon opened its mouth, and then squirted out several blue flames which flared across the air. This gave Sean a good impression that it could be a Fire-type move and it wouldn't be so effective. Sadly, it wasn't, it was a Dragon-type move which did more damage than expected. When the flames hit Growlithe, it started to tumble off its legs in shock. Luckily, it was not knocked out, and it got back up in seconds. However, the damage put Jenny in the lead. Meanwhile, Sean was very determined to make a shock comeback in the battle.
"So you're getting lucky. Now I'm gunna be serious. Growlithe, use Leer again!" he thought he'd end the streak of Bites for a minute, just to weaken Charmeleon further. Once Growlithe made eye contact with Charmeleon, Growlithe gave another evil look of fear, making Charmeleon more frustrated. Now, it looked as if the Leer was working well, but Jenny knew she was winning and was going to win.
"Try as you might, but I'll be the winner. I can feel it, son. Charmeleon, use a good Smokescreen to really mix it up!" now Sean was horrified. Things were going to be a whole lot tougher now that she had got an accuracy decreasing move involved. Charmeleon got to work, by firing a ball of black oil from its mouth, which then ended up exploding on Growlithe, releasing a big cloud of thick fog that got in Growlithe's eyes.
"Aw man! You sure do know what gets on my nerves, mum." Sean was starting to realize that he wasn't being so lucky after all, and that his mum could indeed beat him. If she did, then he would not want to know what battling Blaine would be like.
"However, that does not mean you will beat me! You have yet to see how far I've come! Use Bite again! Make it good, Growlithe!" the repetitive move didn't make Jenny nervous at all. Infact, she was only confident that she was getting closer to victory by the minute. As it did for the last few turns, Growlithe charged over to Charmeleon. Although, this time, the Smokescreen was starting to take effect on Growlithe's eyes. The smoke had damaged its sight, so rather than ending up biting Charmeleon, Growlithe bit a ball which had happened to be on the floor as a distraction.
"Aww man..." now Sean could tell he was about to be ruined in this battle, it was in his sight. Unfortunately, he knew it wasn't long until the end for now. As for Jenny, she was excited. It only needed her to use one more attack and it could be done.
"Nice effort. Now, Charmeleon, put an end to this. Use Scratch!" she quickly said her phrase before Growlithe would quickly recover. Charmeleon ran over to Growlithe in fast motion, although, as Growlithe did, Charmeleon, for some reason, felt a bit weird and ended up scratching the wrong thing, a rocky wall. This wall had put serious strain on Charmeleon's claws, and had left Charmeleon in pain for a few seconds.
Sean needed a comeback, and needed one now. Growlithe was standing up, while shaking. Its fur was covered in broozes from the scrathes, marks from the bites, and its eyes were a state due to Smokescreen. Just that moment, Sean remembered the move that he hadn't used yet that he knew of.
"I think not. Let me show you a new move. Growlithe, use Reversal!" Sean was excited to see what would happen while it was being used. The trick with Reversal, was that the lower the health on the Pokemon, the higher the damage would be. Perfect for a situation like this, which could literally turn the tables on Jenny. So, Growlithe listened straight away, even in its condition, then charged over to Charmeleon. Then, Growlithe leapt onto Charmeleon, using all its weight. This had done plenty of damage, and had practically left broozes on Charmeleon, putting them both in the same condition.
Now that they were both in pain, the first attack to win would surely be the winning attack. It was up to the first person to attack, which they weren't fighting over. Sean snatched this oppurtunity before it was too late.
"And finally, time to prove you wrong. Growlithe, finish off Charmeleon with Bite!" Sean was going to put an end to this battle, which indeed was a very big challenge for him, one that he was not expecting at all. Growlithe got back up on its wonky legs, then, despite its painful condition, ran over to Charmeleon with great speed, then chomped on Charmeleon's scaly skin. This was the icing on the cake of the battle, and had caused Charmeleon to faint. Sean was the winner.
"Oh yeah! Way to go!" Sean was proud already, and this was just a practice battle. Blaine was getting a real taste of what he could be expecting, that was if he was battling. As for Jenny, she returned her Charmeleon and accepted defeat.
"Well, son, you learned very well through your journey. Guess you better get ready for your next battle for the badge. We'll have a break, then I'll give your Growlithe some Potions to prepare for the next battle. Good luck. I'll be right at the back watching." Jenny was smiling, feeling proud that she had lost as she was proud to know that she had a son who was a strategic battler who was a tough cookie when it came to battling. They all sat at the table where Baline was, then had a break.
