    Seriously, you make threads about every earthquake above a 3.0 for like a month, then stop when an 8.8 one hits Chile sending a possible tsunami across the Pacific that could hit Hawaii and the west coast? You all make no sense. :[

    I was gonna make a thread about Chile when I read about it online...xD

    My heart goes to everyone who's lost loved ones and their homes, I hope the Chileans get through this.

    First Haiti, then Chile, Mother Nature's been livid lately...^^;

    Jeez, an 8.8? That's REALLY big; buildings collapse at earthquakes magnitudes lower than that. I haven't looked into it, but here's hoping it didn't hit a major city.

    There is a lot of damage in Santiago, the capital of Chile. But the earthquake itself was 250 KM away. In fact, no one felt the earthquake at it's peak because it was in a remote part of the coast.

    Not a lot of people have died, compared to what earthquakes that size usually do result in. I think the death tole right now is 147.

    That's a relief. If an 8.8 hit a city directly, there wouldn't be much left.

    Yes, that would be extremely devastating. :[ Santiago would probably resemble San Fransisco after the 1906 earthquake if that were the case, probably even worse.

    The earthquake was actually rather deep too, which lowers the effect on the surface. So that is good.

    So what your saying is, there is a chance of a tsunami hitting the west coast of the US?

    I live there. ;;

    Heard about it early this morning, so sad but at least not many people died but then again 1 is too many, just hope this tsunami doesn't do any more damage. Thoughts go out to the people of Chile.

    You live in Las Vegas, which is no where near the coast. xD And the west coast will probably get like a one foot wave because they point towards the west, not the south. So it won't direct hit it.

    By 8.8 do you mean the richter scale? Its just seismologists don't actually use that to measure earhtquakes any more as it's very innacurate and dosn't actually give a very clear picture. For the 3 decades we have used MMS (moment magnitude scale). The richter scale is only used by the media. The Richter scale measures the seismic waves (or vibrations) felt 600km / 373 miles away. The MMS is an expression of the energy released by the earthquake. It multiplies the distance of the slip between the 2 parts of the fault by the total area affected. It is much more accurate at measuring an earthquake's energy. Yes, I did geography at highschool.

    The point of my smartarse-ness there is to say that something that measure 3.0 on the richer scale can cause more damage than 8.0. Don't assume that an earthquake's importance is measure by the richter scale.

    All earthquakes change lives, therefore you can not call some earthquakes less important than others. That is why. See it does make sense!

    Well you're just heartless.

    I hope nobody on here gets killed.

    And I'm so glad i'm British.You should all move over here, we only get earthquakes when our continent goes upwards a bit as an effect of the weight of the last ice age pushing us down into the Earth's mantle.

    But yeah, that whole stuff about "this is more important than other earthquakes" is a load of crap.

    Why are you asking me? I don't know, read other articles.

    I think the reason this one has gotten less attention is...

    1. Olympics.
    2. They have cars, technology, and skyscrapers in Chilie. In Haiti, they barely had anything, and that earthquake basically destroyed the country even more than it already was, which is why it got more attention.

    Chile is certainly more able to handle an earthquake better than Haiti. The death toll probably won't reach very far over a thousand people, if that. Still, it's tragic, and it's definitely getting those 2012 apocalypse theorists excited.

    I agree with the few above people - it's probably less notable firstly because it hasn't dealt as much damage and second because Chile is able to take more without breaking down - it's a little more advanced than Haiti.

    Australia > w/e. It's got a better climate, too. better than 364 days of cloud.

    It probably wont even get to 500. It's 217 now and they have had almost a day to count.

    But yes, Chile is very well adapted to earthquakes. In fact, it was in Chile where they have had the largest earthquake ever recorded in history, and now the one just happened is also on the top 10 of all recorded history. It's 6th on the list. Anyway, Chile is used to powerful earthquakes.

    I was thinking that earlier today. Hopefully things will calm down after this... =/

    But, yes, I think Chile is going to fare much better than Haiti. They're more experienced when it comes to earthquakes, so their building codes are a lot more earthquake safety-orientated. So I don't think the actual 'disaster' factor will be quite on Haiti's scale...

    Of course, that doesn't change the fact that what happened was awful. My condolences go out to Chile.
