HEART OF SOUL

Spoiler:

-------Opening Post-------

Alex rolled his eyes up and down as the credits on the television whizzed by. He stood there, slowly trying to get his eyes to fully shut for a quick snooze. Just a few minutes won't hurt… His head fell forward as he tried taking a quick nap. "Hey, get up! I don't pay you to just sleep!" A voice boomed. Alex immediately shot his eyes open and looked to the side, down the snack aisle. Standing in the middle of the aisle was a short, portly fellow with short black hair. "Why don't you do something instead of pissing around?" He yelled again. Alex looked at the cash register in front of him, and then looked around the store, finally looking back at his manager.

"But…there's nobody here. And there's nothing to do." Alex complained, stretching out his arms. It was a slow day, just like any other day.

"Well then, FIND something to do!" His manager yelled once more before stomping away to his back office.

Alex didn't say anything, but instead took a paper towel roll and some Windex from the bottom drawer of the checkout counter. He approached the front window of the store and sprayed some of the fluid onto the window while wiping it with the paper towel. One of these days he's gonna get it. He left streaks across the window as he wiped, not bothering to get rid of them. Suddenly, Alex felt as if something had sat on his shoulder. "Oh, it's just you Mari." She cooed, and flapped her wings before floating around in circles around his head. "Stop that. What if someone saw you?" Suddenly Mari stopped, and looked outside through the window, where it was pouring rain. Alex stopped to see what she was looking at, until she turned her head slowly into one of the aisles in the store as if she was following something. "What is it, what do you see?" Mari cooed once more before floating towards the aisle, where Alex followed. They stood in front of the aisle, where rustling sounds could be heard. Alex looked down the aisle, and saw a small, pink creature with sharp jagged teeth trying to climb the shelves. It had long slender arms and stubby feet, and was roughly the same size as Mari. "Oh crap, it's a demon! Quick, Mari get it!" Mari cooed, flapping its wings and then flew towards the demon. Alex frantically looked around to make sure nobody was in the store, before running through the aisles to try and corner the beast.

"Quick Mari, shoot it down!" Mari opened her mouth and shot out several tiny, glowing spheres at the demon who was running through the aisles miraculously evading the attacks. It quickly grabbed on to a shelf and launched itself into the air shooting a ball of energy at Mari.

Caw! Mari screeched as the energy ball exploded upon impact sending her spiraling to the ground. Damn it! Alex quickly raised his hand and used his Black Volley to get a direct hit. The demon violently screeched as it dodged the volleys. "Mari, weapon mode!" Mari quickly floated back up from her hit, and started to glow, and rapidly dematerialized into a sleek, thin, black sword. The demon screeched once more before hoisting itself up onto a high shelf and jumping at Alex. He gave a swift swing of the sword as the demon came closer, completely slicing it in half. The demon roared as it started to disintegrate into millions of what seemed to be particles and further disappearing.

"Well that was easier than I thought." Alex said cheerfully, as Mari returned to its former state and going back into Alex's watch. Alex stood there for a few moments, until he turned around to look behind him. It was his manager.

"…What. The. Hell." He said, with his jaw dropping. "After I just told you to quit slacking off…you start acting like you're in some sort of video game? You're this close to getting fired, you understand?" The manager raised his voice, and pointed his finger at the counter, signaling Alex to return to his duties.

"My bad…" Alex, admittedly felt embarrassed. He wasn't betting on his manager to catch him in the act of Demon Hunting, but he was grateful that he didn't suspect anything. Alex sauntered over to his counter, and stood there senselessly once again. At least I've killed my demon for the week…

I tiredly woke up before my alarm, and sat up in my bed. I didn't have work today so I had stayed up much later last night, hunting. I successfully banished two demons without creating any suspicion of my actions. Although I was very tired and sleepy, I considered this a good morning, and got out of bed. Jayce was resting on a stand next to my small bed, and I decided to leave him be. I took out some clothes and set them on my bed, then I walked into the bathroom.

I was extremely dirty, and had plenty of cuts and bruises. I wasn't in much pain, and I had gotten rather used to it, anyways I turned on the shower so it would warm up as I brushed my teeth, then I took my shower, reflecting on my work and my reason. After I finished, I got dressed and ate some cereal. Jarvan flew in and landed on the back of my chair. "Hey buddy." I said casually eating my cereal. "Are you tired this morning too?"

He didn't make a sound, instead picking grapes off of a vine on the counter. After he had finished he stretched his wings and landed on my shoulder. "You're a lazy one." I sighed, finishing my cereal. I washed the bowl, dried it, and put it in the cabinet. "It is a relax day today buddy." I said slipping on my shoes and grabbing a fedora. I was also wearing loose jeans and a navy blue collared shirt. I grabbed my phone off the charging dock on my counter and walked out into the hallway.

"Oh hey Jayce!" I waved to the woman who lived a few doors down, she was escorting her only son to the elevator. "You look pretty awful this morning. What happened?"

I laughed kindly, "I just got into another fight is all."

"Was it over a girl?" She teased.

"Nope." I answered, "I had to fight the villainous orphan kicker, who kicks orphans and kittens." Her kid looked at at me in awe, like I was some hero. I always told him stories like that, it probably made him happy to hear. Though he never really said anything, he was the shyest six year old I'd ever met.

"Well you take the superhero antics easy. Only god knows who will take care of your apartment if something were to happen to you!" She said, "My husband would be to tired to even walk to your door!"

I laughed, "Don't you worry, I'll be sure never to let anything happen to me." I followed them to the end of the hall, all the way to the elevator then rustled the kid's hair. "Be sure to make goals kid, that way you'll be like me!" I then took my fedora and placed it on his head. The kid blushed and hid behind his mother, "Have a nice day!" I said to his mother, "I'm takin the stairs, so you'll be gone before me."

"You have a nice day to Jarvan." She said as the doors closed. I walked down the stairs with my hands in my pockets. There were not many other tenants, and I really only knew that family, so I didn't have any other delays. "Well Jarvan, I'm going to get some tea and pancakes, then we are going to relax at the park." Even though I had cereal, I was still fairly hungry because I had skipped dinner yesterday.

I entered my favorite coffee shop, The Roasted Cup. I sat down at a window table and watched outside. I already knew what I wanted so there was no need to look at the menu, I just had to wait for a waiter. I enjoyed sitting here too, because I enjoyed watching people pass by. I liked to imagine each person's goals and aspirations, it made me smile. I especially like families, because it meant to me that the parents had achieved their goals, or at least achieved some goal.

"Excuse me sir." I heard a girl's voice say near me. "Are you ready to order?"

I looked for a second more out the window then looked at her. She was very pretty, and seemed around my age, "I sure am." I answered. "I would like a cup of mint tea and a pancake with sliced strawberries on top."

"Is that all?" She said nicely.

I pretended to think for a moment, then answered, "How much would it cost to get your name?"

She laughed, then answered, "Is that the pick-up line for today? You should probably work on them."

I sighed, "Well Jordan, I thought it was pretty clever." She laughed and went to get my food. Jordan was a friend of one of my co-workers. We dated for like a week, but then broke up. It wasn't bad though, we stayed pretty good friends, and neither of us have any anger about it.

She brought my food over a few minutes later, "So Jayce, still taking those martial arts lessons?" She said, sitting across from me. "It seems like they just wipe the floor with you."

I laughed lightly, "This only happens when I have to fight two or more people!" Which was partially true. "And I still won!"

"I'm surprised how fast you recovered since the accident." She said taking a sip of my tea. "This stuff tastes terrible." She said.

I drank a lot of it pretty fast and enjoyed it. "I keep telling you, the wound wasn't fatal. It just went in and out." I picked the strawberries off my pancake, then ate them. "Anyways, that's history."

I began eating the pancake while Jordan continued, "Must have been a happy bullet." She said, "Before you got shot, you were a pretty big downer."

Its because I didn't really have a reason to live. I thought, though out loud I said, "Being near death probably just changed my view of the world."

"A lot more than you're views have changed." She said before getting yelled at by her boss to get back to work, "Well I'll see you latter." She said, rushing off. I quietly finished eating, left a 10$ tip, payed my bill and left. I took the long walk to the park, giving me plenty of relaxing time.

I sat at a park bench and looked at the sky, the sun glaring in my eyes. "Kinda wish I had kept my fedora." I said lightly to Jarvan. "I can't complain about a sunny day though!"

Kallen & Rosa

Exorcist for Hire

I specialize in demons, and otherwise unwelcome spiritual guests in your life. I can provide no proof of my work besides word of mouth, but you will not be required to pay for my services until after the job is completed.
I'll be in the Manhattan area for a week or so as of the time of this post. You can contact me at…
"Hey, Kal, catch."

Kallen put away his phone, a stylus-toting phablet that he kept for work purposes, and a can of soda fell into his hand. Of course, doing anything wasn't too easy when he had his partner in crime, so to speak, sleeping on his lap.

"Don't think we ever asked ya yet," a man named Jet (or at least that's what the rest of his band calls him) started, "but how long've ya two known each other?"

"Feels like forever, now that I think about it."

"Ah-ha~. Soul mates, eh?"

"You could say that."

"Tch. Lucky you." Jet Blakk was the charistmatic lead singer of an alternative punk band called The Sky's No Limit. Short and spiky black hair, wide blue eyes, well built and at least half a foot taller than Kallen, he probably could have had any girl he wanted wrapped around his finger just by introducing himself. He didn't care much about those opportunities, though. He just wanted to travel the country and play his music for anyone who'd listen. Getting paid was a bonus.

However, he and his band had no idea how close Kallen and Rosa were, or what their real occupation was. Kallen just helped Jet's drummer deal with some legal issues for no charge, so they offered them the ride while they were heading to their next gig.

After they hit a downtown area, the band's tour bus stopped by a sidewalk. Hardly anyone flocked in, as if it just didn't matter to New Yorkers, and Kallen set off with his petite partner over his back.

"We're comin' back through next week for a show in Virginia, if you wanna hitch a ride again."

"I'll remember that!" Kallen answered. Rosa only woke up after the band left, and the Reaper set his Familiar down on her feet. "Get a good nap?" She only gave an affirmative mumble while she rubbed her eyes with her sweater sleeve.

"Can we get some coffee or something?" she muttered half-heartedly.

"Sure. Thousand coffee shops in New York City… give or take, depending on the pizza places. Go ahead and pick." And pick she did, deciding on a place named Shiro Kuma pretty quickly. She just liked the giant sign of a bear in a latte. Rosa ordered a white chocolate mocha, and Kallen a double espresso with milk. She enjoyed herself, so Kallen couldn't help but smile, too, but their pick-me-up was cut short by the smell of a monster.

Okay, so it wasn't really a smell, but it was still a monster, and Rosa groaned knowing she couldn't finish her drink in time. Her only relief was that Kallen told her they could come back.

The pair got up to leave, and Rosa disappeared as soon as they were out of the shop. Kallen covered the upper half of his face with his hoodie, and faded away once a wing started manifesting over his shoulder. Kallen and Rosa were out of sight, much to the shock and awe of bystanders (who may or may not have wondered if stress was getting to them or if it was a Criss Angel performance), and the large white wing surrounded the former like a cloak before he leaped onto the top of the coffee shop.

After a moment of searching, Kallen found a large spider-like beast with hands for feet roaming the rooftops of the buildings nearby, and it fled as soon as it realized it was being watched. Not to slack, the now-masked Kallen followed along, using some magic from Rosa to disable his muscle's limitations and keep up.

Shear was sprawled on the floor of his apartment using Kerayle as an over-sized pillow sleeping off the night before when a loud knock at the door woke both of them up, Kerayle vanishing and Shear with nothing underneath him anymore face planting.

Shear wore his plastered on smile like a good little grunt and pretended not to be disgusted by the selfishness and lack of awareness shown by most of humanity as he lifted the velvet rope and let some model-type in a fancy white fur coat. She liked his face, like most women did and let her hand brush the side of his arm as she walked by, sending tingles up his spine until he remembered she was wearing fur. Peta's a bunch of psychopaths, but fur belongs wherever it grew and that's that, wearing some fancy coat is nowhere near as nice as petting a real animal. He thought to himself as he continued to check if people fit the bill and then letting them inside. Out of nowhere Shear felt the hair on the back of his neck stand up and was surprised to hear a growl in his throat, before he realized it was actually emanating from the fang on his necklace. Some guy had made a scene in the line, no fights or anything, he just talked to every woman there, and even though he wasn't handsome AND had an annoying voice he was wooing all of them. Shear knew right away why they were all charmed, he was no regular human, and just no regular human could give him the creeps.

Shear walked up to the door without his favorite jacket, having not sewn it up again yet-too much work-and opened the door to the woman who was his landlord and neighbor. "Oh hello dear, I'm sorry there was such a commotion about one of those clubs yesterday and you looked so worn out when you walked by last night I wanted to make sure you were alright, and that there aren't any wildcats in here." He looked surprised for a moment until he remembered she had seen Kerayle the first night he moved in, after getting too pissed off to stay in his kitten form, last time Shear ever let HIM sit in the house instead of the totem. "Oh Miss Marzka, I told you that was just a weird hallucination you had, y'know people have been seeing strange crap all over New York lately, hell I've seen a few myself. Besides, how would I get a tiger here? I'm only one man, a Siegfried needs his Roy and besides, the only magic I can work is with a setup, a cheese grater and a spice cabinet." She smiled, she was aging gracefully even if she was no jaw dropper. "Well of course I know there was no tiger, I mean where would it even go to the bathroom? But I have heard some strange things an-agh!" Ms. Marzka let out a little scream and gasped as she saw what looked like red, scaly, severed limbs on the floor behind Shear, he was about to ask what was wrong when he remembered his stupid idea to make armor from the creep...after all where do you find a blacksmith in New York anyway?
Oh uh, you see it's perfectly fine for that to be there...umm."

He got to the front with his entourage of mind and most-assuredly body slaves and looked at Shear with a cocky grin that said "Hey man, the ladies speak for themselves, I get what I want." Shear stepped forward and got between the guy and his floosies. "Sorry ladies, go on ahead in, I have to talk to this gentleman about an important rule of the club before he joins you, if you would sir?" The flock of chickadees made their various sounds of disappointment and looked at him for satisfaction, surely he wouldn't let some jerk ruin their night just because he's big? He didn't want the charm to wear off but it would be a lot worse if he made a scene around all these people, so he acquiesced and followed the big palooka into the alley between the club and the next building. "Alright buddy, cough it up before I have to get rough, or should I say let yourself get coughed up? I know what you are and you're not getting in the way of my job, do you know what it costs just for a tiny little apartment in this freaking city?" Shear didn't even give the guy time to plead innocence before he gave him a hard left hook and sent him sprawling on the concrete, he picked him by the collar of his shirt and decided it was his turn to be arrogant. "You see that buddy? My bare hands, I don't need any special tricks to handle you, now get out of that guy before I" Shear was cut off as a big red scaly fist seemed to come out of the man's mouth as fast as a snake and hit him so hard he was actually knocked off his feet. When Shear got up he rubbed some brick dust out of his hair and cracked his knuckles. "What a cheap shot! Doesn't anybody have a good ol' fashioned pugilist's honor anymore? I'll have you know-oh..." He looked down at his favorite jacket and noticed the claws he hadn't even seen on the creature had torn a chunk out of the shoulder. Shear whispered "time to rend and tear some flesh." And smiled a deranged masque-of-anger sort of smile, bearing his almost-fangs while a bright light issued from his necklace and took the shape of a reverse scimitar with an edge more for tearing hemorrhaging gashes into flesh than clean cuts as he kicked what had now finished revealing itself to be a demon to the ground and walked towards it, ignoring it's pleas for mercy.

"Those are just props for the next performance I'm going to be in! Yeah, they figured since I'm so big and um...intimidating I should play the demon king." Shear emphasized his point by making little horns on his head with his index finger, his landlord just laughed at him. "Better include a mask because nobody could look at that face and think you were scary." Shear held the smile against the tide of scowls threatening to invade his face as they shook hands and she walked away. Ms. Marzka was the only person he'd let get away with talking to him like that, she was a nice lady, she didn't want much, always had a kind word, and was very understanding when he was late on the rent. He walked back into the apartment and looked hard at Kerayle as he manifested himself. "Don't suppose you eat demons?" The only reply was a slight lift of Kerayle's lip to make an unamused snarl. "Hmm....what kind of dumpster would nobody notice a few demon limbs in?"

Sitting at the park and entertaining myself, some children approached me. "Hey mister, can you give us our ball?" one of them asked. I didn't notice the toy that rolled up beside my feet until now.

"This is now a magician's ball," I joked, picking it up. "It comes from the magical middle east, and contains wonders beyond your imagination!" I was in a particularly good mood, because last night I had tracked down and beaten a demon. I also had a day off from that tedious job.

"Does that mean you're a magician?" another kid wondered. This one was a little girl, and they all seemed to be at least nine or ten. I nodded to her.

"I can pull a coin from behind your ear!" I exclaimed, reaching behind her ear and pulling out a nickel.

"That was kind of lame," the first child groaned. "Everybody can do that."

"Well, can everybody make three coins spin in circles without even touching them?" I demonstrated my meaning, not only pulling a trick on their eyes to slip a few more coins out of my sleeve, but I levitated them over my hand and made the coins do little tricks around each other, no strings attached.

"That's so cool!" the first boy responded with new excitement. "Do another?" I was about to show off a second trick when Jayce 2 pecked at my head. I lost my concentration, and the coins fell to the pavement while I rubbed my scalp. "Jay, what's the matter?" The bird pointed in the direction of some buildings nearby.

I spotted a masked man in a white cloak, running across them like an acrobat. "It's one of those freerunning guys. Yeah, they're kind of abnormal out in public like that, but so what?" I focused on picking up the coins, but J2 persisted, and the kids lost interest to go play some group game.

"What? Are you worried they might get hurt?" I tried to pet J2's head to calm him down, but he pecked my hand and flew off.

"Hey!" I yelled, trailing him.

I chased him to the top of a nearby ice cream shop, and watched the roof jumper J2 was so fixated on. At first I thought little of it, but this guy was a lot more agile than any normal human I'd seen running around. I took a look around, and no one was even paying attention to him — random guy in a white cloak, running across buildings? That should be pretty noticeable!

Then the creature in front of him caught my eye, and I had a realization.

"Oh, come on, no way. No freakin' way. That is my job!" Jayce landed on my shoulder and picked at his wing, like a job well done.

"Well, let's follow him!" I finished. I couldn't keep up with that runner normally, so I used my levitation powers to help me get across the rooftops.

Tony slowly struggled to wake up, having a very late night. He had finished off a pair of demons that were causing mischief in the park. Afterwards, he went to a night club and had a few drinks before retiring. He rubbed his eyes and stretched as he gazed sleepily at the clock. 11:30? He shook his head, wondering how he managed to wake up so early. He staggered to the shower and cleaned himself up, making sure to brush his long hair instead of drying it. He grabbed his clothes and donned them quickly before walking to the kitchen area.

"Mornin" he mumbled to Bunsen, who was sleeping in a corner. He stirred awake about as slowly as Tony did. Tony grabbed a cup of coffee to wake himself up more, while looking in the fridge for something to eat. There wasn't much in there to eat, but he did find a couple of eggs and a slice of cheese. Moving the beer inside around yielded nothing more than what he saw. "Looks like we'd better head to the store for some food," he said to his familiar, who clicked his pincers in response. Over their reaper career, Tony had learned to understand Bunsen by the clicks he made.

Tony grabbed his keys and headed to the door, while Bunsen seemed to melt away, going back into the patch on his back. He walked out into the sunlight, jumped onto his bike, and rode off to a nearby grocery store in pursuit of groceries. Luckily, he found a parking spot near the front. Shutting the Harley off, he locked the front wheel and dismounted. He walked inside, pulled out a cart from their corral, and slowly perused the aisles in search of basic necessities.

Alex continued to stay at the register, while yawning. This has got to be the most slow day ever. Alex watched the television set from the other side of the counter, glancing at the clock every now and then. This shift is so boring. No wonder nobody likes to work here. Suddenly, he saw a tall male walk in to the store. He was literally a giant, around 6'7". Finally a customer. It was right then he felt a tap on his shoulder. "Hey Alex-boy! Ima let you go early today, m'kay?" Alex;s boss stood right behind him, with a notebook in his hand, writing something down. "Unfortunately, I've had to cut some of the employees' hours, so I hope you don't mind." Alex's face lit up and he nodded in agreement. "That doesn't mean you're relieved of your duties! You still have 10 minutes! Go and help that customer down there!" The boss pointed down at the aisle, at the tall man.

"Alright. Simple enough." Alex said, as he sauntered over to the aisle. Coo... Mari suddenly started to float around Alex, as he walked over to the customer. "Mari, don't distract me. I might get a raise if I do this right." Mari then floated away from Alex into another aisle, doing who know's what, leaving Alex to do his business. "Hey, how's it going?" Alex said to the man. "We're having a sale on some of the bread. I'll even throw in some sandwich meat, and knock off a dollar." Alex smiled, and looked around to make sure his boss wasn't near. "Actually, I lied. My boss makes me say that to the customers so we sell more stuff." Suddenly, Mari once again floated from above and flew around Alex. He started to swing his hand as if there was a bug flying around him and he was trying to swat it. He swung his hand trying to get Mari away without talking to the floating familiar. "Stupid bugs, they won't go away, huh?" He gave a half hearted laugh, as Mari continued to float around. Mari, get the Hell away from me...

"Gerald's pretty pissed off that he's missing this."

Norris could barely make out what his friend was saying above the clamor of cheering parents. That was one of the drawbacks of coaching a youth league team and he wouldn't miss it, this being the last game of their season.

He leaned closer towards his friend so he wouldn't have to raise his voice.

"I don't see why." Norris chuckled while gesturing to the bleachers behind them.

That compelled his friend to join in on the laugh. "We could definitely do without these parents trying to coach the game for us. You're right about that."

With nothing to say back, Norris returned his attention to the game at hand, which was in the final few minutes of play. He watched as one kid on the opposing team pulled off an impressive behind the back pass to a wide open teammate. Impressive for a ten year old. The player that received the pass nearly missed the whole play up with his clumsy footwork, but was able to sneak the ball past the goalie for the lead. It turned out it was going to be the last goal scored in the rest of the game. A loss to end the season would have been disappointing in most circumstances, but there was little riding on the result of a non-profit youth league game other than some young resilient egos. After some improvised speech about the cliche of having fun and how proud Norris and his friends were of their kids, they left the young, budding lacrosse stars in the hands of their parents.

"So where am I dropping you off, Norris?"

His friend and fellow coach, Rudy, had been kind enough to offer him a ride back into the city, like he always did after games.

"Uhh, damn, anywhere I guess," Norris looked out the window to see people seated outside a small ice cream parlour. "Actually, just drop me off in the city, I'm kind of hungry so I'm going to find somewhere to eat." He started patting his stomach afterwards and feel into a rhythm of drumming them.

"I'd join ya but I got class in a couple of hours."

Norris chuckled and Rudy spoke again.

"Damn, I'm feeling hungry now too, this is your fault man, I'm going to pass out from hunger and were going to crash."

A smile crept on Norris' face, "Yea, yea, enough of your bull, Rudy, just drive."

The playful banter between friends continued for the duration of the ride and before they knew it they were back in the city. Rudy pulled over and smirked at Norris.

"Get out of my car, jack---"

Norris shot another smile at his buddy before getting out of the car. He watched as Rudy attempted a rather horrifying try at a U-turn. His stomach growled, reminding him why he'd chosen to stop in the city in the first place. He wasn't quite sure what he was in the mood for, perhaps some waffles or maybe even some frozen yogurt. Both sounded great to the hungry college kid.

Kallen & Rosa

Kallen, Rosa warned, someone's following us.

"Following us?" Kallen wanted to stop and check, but he had more important matters to take care of. So, he just trusted his Familiar. "What kind of following?"

They're just following along. They don't seem hostile.

"Wait, 'they'?"

Two; one human-shaped and a bird.

"And they're chasing us specifically?" As they circled another block, leading to a less public area, Rosa confirmed that the persons were, in fact, following Kallen in particular.

There's always the possibility that they're demons in disguise.

"Thought you said they didn't look hostile."

I was thinking about our trip through Wyoming. Kallen could feel his cloak shivering — both of them were very disturbed by the memory.

"Oh, yeah... I thought we agreed not to speak of that again."

Well, they could be another Reaper pair.

"That would explain the two people thing a lot better. New York's like its own planet compared to the places we've been; I'm surprised we didn't expect to see at least one running around.

"Anyways," he continued, "love to meet up, but it can wait." In a split second, the beast climbed a rather tall news building, and Kallen asked for Rosa to boost him up. Reaching the edge of the roof he was on, he planted his foot down and scaled the next one up in a leap, cutting off the monster's path.

It was then he noticed what he believed to be the other Reaper following him, and as he stepped on the demon's hand-feet at the roof edge, Kallen shouted, "Wanna give me some help?" Normally he'd take care of them quickly, but this time Kallen lifted it by its fuzzy black arm, throwing it towards Jayce by batting it away with his cloak, which unfurled itself into a large feathered wing.

"Catch!"

Tony was perusing their selections, minding his own business, when a younger guy came up to him and started throwing up a sales pitch to him. He then turned around looking for something, then back to him and apologized for the sales pitch. Tony simply shrugged and turned to the boy. "Anything to make a buck, huh?" he chuckled to himself as he said this, "No way I can be mad about that."

It was at that moment that he saw the guy acting like he was swatting a fly or something. He also said something about bugs in the building, but Tony noticed something...odd. "I'm sorry to say, but there are no bugs in here, my friend," he said with a smirk, "Maybe you could tell the bug to leave you alone..." Tony gave a motion inviting him to walk the store with him. If his theory was correct, maybe it'd be best to stick together. It was then that he felt a sharp point in the back of his neck. Instinctively, he grabbed the back of his neck and rubbed it.

Why would Bunsen be reacting this way? Could there be something to this after all? Maybe its time he found out.

Shear groaned as he lifted his head up, he hadn't intended to fall back asleep after answering the door. "I need to get a less comfortable couch...give myself some incentive to actually sleep in bed." Kerayle looked offended as if all Shear should need to sleep comfortably is his soft creamy fur. "Hey, don't gimme that look, how am I supposed to trust a pillow that comes with a built-in alarm clock in the form of face planting me by disappearing if something happens? Thank goodness you don't eat actual food, it's hard enough to make a living as it is. The last part Shear added has he broke two eggs into his favorite skillet and scowled as one of the yokes broke. "Argh!" Every f***ing time! Every time I use more than 1 egg for something ONE of them breaks the yoke! Shear bitterly opened the fridge, and brightened up when he pulled out his extra sharp cheddar cheese, then he pulled the salt shaker and pepper grinder out of their cabinet. He put a little bit of salt and a lot of pepper on the eggs first since they were the lightest. Ahh...it's so much better when you just get pepper corns and grind them right onto the food, and the best part is it's hard to put TOO much pepper on something. He waited until the eggs were solid on the top but still gooey on the top, allowing the grated cheese he lightly sprinkled on top to sink into the middle before the eggs were done cooking. A big smile adorned Shear's face when the toast popped out right before the eggs were finished, giving him just enough time to butter the toast, slap an egg onto each piece, draining the yoke that wasn't broken onto it's toast, and chow down.

Minutes later a very happy near-giant exited an apartment with a big stupid grin on his face after he finished rubbing his mouth and upper lip with a wet cloth. "Ah! The most overcrowded city in the world, it's totally constipated streets and slightly-less-than-LA's smog are so beautiful after a wonderful breakfast!" Shear put the cloth in one of his jeans' pockets, he was no neat freak, and all too often his face was sort of dirty but he never forgets that if he doesn't genuinely wash his face after eating something greasy, he smells it the rest of the day. Shear strolled down a few streets, whistling a happy tune to himself until he looked up and saw what looked like two guys running across some buildings. "Hardcore Parkour huh? Good luck fellas, won't catch me doing something so stupid and pointless...well besides maybe putting cheese in everything I eat..." Kerayle manifested himself and began to walk beside Shear, making him thankful for the companionship, besides he didn't know much about being a reaper, but he knew familiars were a form of spirit and couldn't be seen or touched by regular people unless they wanted to be, so he was in the clear. "Man, that guy at the club last night was even taller than me, that's definitely a change of pace, luckily he wasn't quite bigger than me." Shear spoke quietly to himself and Kerayle to a lesser extend, flexing his right arm for emphasis. "Course, when you have to throw deadbeats on their asses who, more often than not, have already had a bit too much and don't know when to quit, and then proceed to decapitate paranormal creatures a gym membership isn't much of a necessity."

I was caught off guard, surprised that he spotted me. Though there was no doubt that he was like me. "Jay!" I said quickly, holding up my left fist. Jay wrapped his left wing around it, and his entire body turned into a glove. I wound up my arm and sidestepped. I punched the demon forcibly onto the rooftop, cracking the pavement. I touched my right hand to my left hand, and J2s right wing emerged from the glove, wrapping my right hand, creating another glove. I picked up the demon effortlessly, "Nice throw, I'm a fan of catch as well!" I said, throwing the demon back at the winged man.

With an awesome-looking power glove originating from J2, I gave the monster a good beatdown before returning it. The man held his arm against his wing, aiming both toward the target, and fired off feathers like a gatling gun. The ends pierced through the lost soul quickly enough that it stopped it cold mid-flight until it outright disappeared.

When it was finished, the half-masked man joined me on the lower rooftops. His wing disappeared, too, replaced by his companion, a woman.

"Hello!" the latter joyfully started.

I put my hands together, creating an empty ball. My gloves slowly creeped inside the ball, looking like liquid. Once it was all in my hands, I pulled my right hand away and J2 flew out. I wondered how a young lady could be somebody's guardian. J2 landed on her shoulder curiously, "So are you like me?" I asked, knowing the answer.

Early.

She liked when it was early. People were more capable of ignoring you when you were early or if class was early. People also made less noise. She appreciated less noise. She appreciated it all. A hand stroked her forehead and the young woman scrunched her nose. It was a more human reaction than she would have done, but it made her feel good and it made the quiet voice laugh. Oh. James. It was just James. What was he doing? Did he have work today? "Go back to sleep," she heard him say, voice so quiet, she almost thought she had dreamed it. Instead, Kaya reached out and clung to his arm. He laughed. It was never a laugh at her, which she liked. The other men had always laughed. "Go on. Today is a paperwork day. We don't need to get groceries until tomorrow."

"Mm...mn..." Clearly, she disagreed. Kaya always thought there was a good day to go grocery shopping. It was one of the only social things she liked to do.That and cook. They distracted her, so she barely had to be in contact with actual people.

James, her father, laughed again. "Then get up and go."

Stupid man, I want to go with you.

Syr's words, their sudden venom, jolted her eyes to open. Behind her growls were more voices, each echoing her words, the sounds, and for a moment, Kaya lay there, transfixed, as Syr continues to speak, ranting about James and his too cool behavior, how he never pays attention to things he should, and so on.

St....Sto....Stop that, Syr. He... Mr. James can't hear you.

This did not pacify the voices. It seemed to make Syr angrier actually. But there was nothing in Kaya's mind that knew how to silence her. No technique she had learned would be enough for this. Syr knew them all anyway.

She sat up slowly and her father's hand moved to muss her hair. "Take a shower before you run out there. Your hair's a mess." Syr mumbled something that was filthy and she merely gave a meek nod.

As always, things were rather difficult to maneuver for a few minutes. It usually took a long shower for her to get her other hand functional without more pain than bearable. Then again... what was the difference? She massaged it under the hot water, losing the stiffness.

Outside of the shower was a small, gentle crooning noise.

"Mm... um... good.... good morning Wyve," Kaya mumbled through the shower door. He gave her another crooning growl in answer and then a small chirp of alarm. "Um... yeh-yes... I'll be leh-leaving soon..." He chirped. "... Right."

Hunting. She disliked it.

Syr loved it, as if to spite her. Carefully she turned off the water and dried herself off. Wyve, she noticed, instantly turned his head away. However, she was not embarrassed. It was simply her own body. While she disliked most touching it, cool air on it, like that which was flowing from the fan, was comfortable.

It's not a sin to bare yourself openly to the world.

She ignored Syr, taking a granola bar from a cabinet and pulling her clothes over her body. Wyve, ever obedient, entered his Totem with a small chattering noise. "D-Daddy?" she whispered from the entrance of their apartment. "I... I'm going to go now."

He looked up from the paper he was signing and smiled, blond hair falling into his face. Syr purred and she shushed her mentally. Not Mr. James. "Come back soon. I want to show you something, okay? You said you needed help with your history."

Kaya nodded shyly, and slipped out the door, wallet and purse in hand. Wyve made a little coo that was even quieter inside the totem. "Mm.... D-Daddy... he's a very good man."

We can't do enough for him.

On that note, she and Syr were always in agreement.

She went into the streets and started to walk. The good grocery store was a few doors down and she knew they would let her in. They were kind people. Mr. James said kind people were silly, but wonderful.

Sometimes, Kaya thought she knew what he meant.

Alex continued swinging his hand around, trying to signal Mari, who was floating above him near the ceiling, acting as if she was going to dive bomb him at any moment. "I'm sorry to say, but there are no bugs in here, my friend," The man smirked. "Maybe you could tell the bug to leave you alone..." Alex suddenly stopped waving his hand, and he felt as if his heart had just skipped a beat. Leave...the bug alone? Alex slowly put down his hand, as he looked at the man in the eye, and then he started to walk off a bit, sort of gesturing Alex to follow him. "

"Hey, Alex-boy, I'm going to go out for a quick errand. I'll be back in five minutes, okay? I'll be back in time before you go." Suddenly, his boss walked into the aisle, greeting the man with a nod.

"Alright. I'll stick around." Alex said, as he kept a calm expression, while still cautiously looking at the man, in case of any sudden movements. The boss walked past the two, and exited the store, closing the door behind him. It's just us two in the store now. Alex thought. He raised his head in caution, and continued to observe him. I heard some demons are able to disguise themselves as humans. If this guy really is a Demon, then I should end this quickly before the boss returns. He walked up to the man. "I don't think bugs can speak." Alex put his hand on a couple of random cans on the shelf and pretended to organize them. He then quickly looked around to make sure nobody was in the store, and then took a look at the camera in the store. It's a good thing the old man is an idiot...the camera doesn't reach in this aisle. He then quickly looked at the man, and jumped back. "Mari, quick! Weapon mode!" Alex assumed a fighting stance, as a blast of light shot through air in front of Alex, forming a weapon in the form of a black sword. "Alright, it's go time! Shadow Slicer!" Alex's sword quickly enveloped itself in a dark light, and swung it towards the man. "Die, demon!"

Tony moved to another aisle while the guy followed him. He wanted to talk to him alone...find out if he was another reaper. Apparently, they were alone in the store. However, as Tony was fixing to explain himself, the guy (who was called Alex) jumped back, calling on something called Mari. A sword appeared in Alex's hand and was soon covered with a dark aura. He immediately attacked, thinking Tony was a demon! This won't do!

Thinking fast, Tony jumped back just in time to avoid the attack. "Bunsen, to arms!" he cried as he assumed his normal fighting position. Immediately, he outstretched his hands and a long metal staff appeared in front of him. He quickly grabbed it, twirled it around him a few times, then pointed one end at him. "Listen to me," he stated, a hint of aggravation in his voice, "I'm no demon. I'm a reaper, just like you. If you wish to continue this, I'll be sure to make you regret it. However, it may be more beneficial if we join together."

With that said, Tony crouched into a defensive position. "Bunsen, ready a Heatwave, just in case," he muttered just low enough for only his familiar to hear. Right after his words, the staff floated in front of Tony as the ends burst into flames. If this were to continue, he'd have a special surprise for this Alex.

"Bunsen, to arms!" The man cried as got into a battle stance. Right after, he stretched out his hands, and a long metal staff of sorts appeared right in front of him, similar as to how Alex's sword had appeared. He grabbed it, twirled it around him a few times, then pointed one end at him. "Listen to me," It was clear to Alex he was aggravated. "I'm no demon. I'm a Reaper, just like you. If you wish to continue this, I'll be sure to make you regret it. However, it may be more beneficial if we join together." Alex stopped mid-swing with his sword.

"A Reaper?" Alex said, calmly. I thought I was the only one... Alex stepped back, with his sword still emanating a dark aura, but this time he was no longer swinging nor pointing it the man. Are there more Reapers out there than just us two...? "You say you're a Reaper...then that means you were able to notice Mari." He said, as his sword de-materialized and then formed into the yellow-bird like creature that Alex referred to as Mari. Mari floated beside Alex's head, and gave out a coo to the man. "Exactly how many more Reapers are out there? Or are we the only ones? And why the hell wouldn't you just directly ask me if I was a Reaper?" Alex wanted answers. This was the first time he had run into another one of his kind, and it was kind of freaking him out. The encounter almost felt as if it were an omen, but he tried to put that at the back of his head.

Peppered with questions, Tony simply shook his head. He gave a simple wave to the bird-like creature named Mari as the staff stopped spinning. "Bunsen, let down your guard. They are friends," he stated. The flames disappeared as the staff layed down on the ground and soon coiled up a little. Legs grew out on either side as the pincers formed and the tail was raised above his body. The staff assumed his natural form, that of a large scorpion. Bunsen turned to look at both men before clicking in response and stood down.

"I saw Mari, but you were trying to pass her off as a fly or something, so I figured I'd play along," he said simply, grabbing a box of crackers and tossing them into his hand basket, "I just assumed that you didn't want to say anything around others who wouldn't understand. I was about ready to tell you my intentions when you decided to attack me." He walked a little further down the aisle, looking at other foods he may want, before continuing, "As far as other reapers are concerned, I'm not sure if there are any others. If there isn't, does it make more sense to not be at each other's throats?"

He turned to Alex and offered him his hand in friendship, or at least a truce. "Forgive me for not Introducing myself before. I'm Tony, former Hell's Angel. Nice to meet a fellow reaper, Alex," he said with a slight grin, "and this beside me is Bunsen, my familiar." Bunsen waved a pincer at both Alex and Mari in greeting.

Shear 'Smith' & Kaya Alabast

Shear continued to wander some of the many sidewalks of 'the NYC' with really no goal in mind until he remembered why he wasn't wearing his favorite jacket, after checking throughout his apartment he hadn't been able to find a single bit of white or red thread, and he didn't want a tailor touching his jacket. He turned and crossed the street towards the nearest shopping center when he realized what he had to do...he was beginning to wonder if there was any way he could get some thread out of Kerayle's fur, then his jacket would be even softer. But before he could take the fantasy of walking everywhere in ultimate comfort any further Kerayle put his paw on his shoulder, claws sheathed but just a flex away from horrible pain, the warning was clear.

Wyve turned to his moving form rather abruptly, leaving Kaya to dangle her arms loosely at her sides. He was murmuring his typical gibberish. To her, of course, it all made sense. Wyve had been with her since the very beginning after all. She might as well have heard the King's English. As such, she knew when he wanted a gentle scratch under his chin. Pleasure at least, of that sort, she could provide. He made a small growl of approval, coiling to perch himself on her shoulders.

"Y-You can't do this in the store," she reminded him, voice carried away by the wind. He crooned. He knew this. Wyve of course, knew this. He was so much smarter than her after all, so much better. Sometimes it felt unfair.

Suddenly, he stiffened and began to hum in her ears. Kaya blinked slowly and her fingers, by Syr's sudden, excited command, went to wrap around a silver dart. Syr was grinning. Wyve was intrigued. That was a good reason to be excited!

Shear walked into the shopping center's parking lot and, in a moment of absent-mindedness stood in the middle looking at all the signs in an attempt to discern which one would sell threads. He could kick himself when he saw the big spool next to a needle and thread with the words "Tailor's Treat clothes and clothing supplies." When he walked in the man at the desk couldn't imagine such a big man being in his store for anything other than violence or a prank, and merely raised his left eyebrow at Shear questioningly. He got embarrassed at what him being there might look like and couldn't bring himself to admit the truth. "Yeah umm...my...Fiance! Yes, my fiance tore a very important part of her...outing...ensemble and is too broken up about it right now to come herself. I need a spool of your most resistant and thermal white thread and one of your softest and most crimson red if you will."

Shear spent the next few minutes telling himself he couldn't pick fights with shopkeepers over something so pointless as a bit of attitude and was oh so relieved to get out of the store. He was only a few feet away from the shop and it's snooty douchebag fruit of a keeper when he stopped dead and stared across part of the parking lot to a sort of short girl and-"Is that...a tiny dragon floating by that girl?" Kerayle growled and nudged Shear in the direction of the girl. "What's your problem? I think dragons are pretty coo-oh! That might be a demon trying to eat her face, guess we better make sure huh?" Shear began to power-walk down the side walk, keeping his eyes on the tiny dragon the whole time, he didn't want it to notice he could see it and run, but he couldn't bring himself to just casually stroll forward either. Kerayle walked beside him, planning to sweep the demon away from the girl if it made a move, she would notice Shear doing something but a regular person wouldn't notice a thing besides a slight breeze as he leaped over them with his powerful legs.

Abruptly, Wyve let out a low, feral hiss and Kaya felt her body coil into itself. Her fear began to grow, widening her eyes. This place... it wasn't safe. Something was... about to happen. Something... dangerous... A smile curled her lips upward and Syr moved, spinning to face the approaching bulky figure. Wyve shot towards Kerayle, flying in front of Syr and hissing protectively.

Kaya-Syr- chuckled a bit. "This is... all a misunderstanding... isn't it?" Kaya cringed. She was excited. She wanted... wanted to... what?

Wanted them to enjoy themselves.

"However..." Syr twirled a dart between her fingers. "Perhaps that's a good thing... hmm?" Her dark voice hummed and she crouched, waiting for the other to make the next move.

Shear stopped dead in his tracks when the dragon thing flew up to Kerayle and began hissing at him with no show of fear whatsoever. The girl seemed to stand still for a moment before her face took on a psychotic image that was almost enough to scare him and twirled a dart in her little hand like it was a knife.

After shaking off his momentary hesitation Shear clenched his hands into fists and raised them to strategic guard points by his left pectoral and under his right cheek with grim determination on his face. "Alright, spill it, are you in a harmless looking girl disguise or are you posessing her? I would never hit a girl but that doesn't mean I can't hurt your little minion. If you are here to hurt anybody I will be your executioner, and my partner Kerayle will be your ride straight back to hell."

Joint Post part two!

Wyve paused in his snarling and looked at Kerayle. His beady eyes widened and he let out a set of urgent, annoyed squeaks. Syr frowned and her body slowly formed a defensive crouch. "A Reaper," she said softly, glancing at Wyve. "There are more? So that's why... it's been so much harder lately."

Syr, stop it! You could do something to him!

"Nothing that he doesn't want," Syr drawled. "Just look at him, Kaya. He wants to suffer. He wants to have a little dance. His muscles could use it."

Syr?! Kaya mentally cringed. Syr was probably right... people liked that. People liked to scream... but... but... Wyve. What if Wyve got hurt? She wouldn't forgive herself. Wyve was not like humans; if he was hurt, it hurt. And hurting him was wrong.

Syr only chuckled. "Oh, you worry too much."

Wyve hesitated. Syr was out, prowling. And once she was out, until she was satisfied it was very difficult to rein her back in. Kaya never could. That involved a confidence she would never likely have. He turned reluctantly towards Kerayle and squeaked, the sound as apologetic as he could make it. Syr glared at him. He hissed at her and she merely glared. "All I get to do is kill," she hummed. "Lemme play, Wyve. I know what I'm doing."

Wyve growled at her. No. Stupid, blood besotted child. His beady eyes focused on the burly man, waiting to see what he would do, even as Syr pulled more darts to throw.

Shear watched the girl's every move, trusting Kerayle not to miss a single movement of Wyve. The girl's eyes were on Shear but...her words were not directed at him, she seemed to be speaking both to Wyve and herself. Shear was about to order Kerayle to switch into his Luminescent Claw form when his thoughts were interrupted by a squeaking noise that didn't sound very hostile, and before he could speak Kerayle growled at him.

The little dragon thing doesn't want to fight? Well the girl sure does...what's their game? Oh well, I'm not so easy to kill, I can afford a little risk. Shear relaxed his hands and let them drop to his sides while Kerayle shrunk down to a kitten and jumped on top of his head.

"Listen, I didn't come here looking for a fight, I thought your little buddy might be a demon, are you...a reaper? Because I honestly thought I was the only one, there goes my special little feeling of uniqueness haha." Shear hoped a dose of humor would diffuse the situation a bit and nudge them farther away from violence.

He... he stopped? The man stopped? How dare he? He initiated the game and now he was going to be boring? What a waste of a man! What a-

Wyve hissed and Syr slowly shifted to a normal, less hostile, stance. "I get it, I get it. I'll let her back... such a... a downer." As she replaced the darts into their holsters, Kaya began to inch back into control As she did, she began to shuffle back away from Shear. She knew that man was a Reaper now. She knew that he was still not safe. She continued to shy back, then she whirled on her heels and ran.

Wyve squealed in alarm and nervously flapped his wings at them. He wanted to explain that yes she was a Reaper and no, she was not sane. Also, yes, she quite possibly still wanted to kill them or torture them until they enjoyed it. He wasn't sure he could catch her if he tried to do that. She had a bad habit of running really, really fast when she got scared.

Meanwhile, Kaya bolted out of the parking lot and down a street. Syr was ranting and snarling under her breath and a part of Kaya did agreed. But right now, she wanted to get to safety... wherever that was.

Shear's muscles shrunk to their normal state as he relaxed, the girl wasn't going to fight, he couldn't stand the thought of hurting a girl, especially one who looked so vulnerable. His relief was short lived when she did a 180 and dashed off. "Wait! What's your sto-welp she's not listening." Without waiting another second Shear sprinted after the girl, his mind racing with the possibilities of the whole ordeal. So, I'm not the only one, guess I can't call myself the grim reaper now...wait a minute, could those crazies freerunning across buildings have been reapers too? Luckily Shear had lots of practice chasing down deadbeats who tried not to pay for their drinks. "Ok girlie, you may be fast but I'm no stranger to exercise, and I've got a pretty big advantage of length-per-stride on you."

When he felt he was within earshot of her he shouted. "Hold on a second! I just wanna know who you are, I'm not as scary as I look it just helps with the job! I'd never hurt a girl!"

Yes, Syr whispered in Kaya's mind. He's getting annoying. Crush his head.

Wyve let out a whining growl as he chased Kaya. That didn't work. Kaya was terrified of men. Some women, but mostly men. Chasing after her like a frantic dog wouldn't work.

The hands... the hands...

Kaya squeaked and bolted in and out of a crowd. His voice was loud; it was loud. It needed to stop. If he wasn't going to hurt her, it needed to stop being loud and he needed to stop being scary now. He did. He did! Finding a nook, Kaya pulled herself into it. At least if she was trapped in here, he couldn't easily pull her out. Worse came to worse... she would hit him with a trash can! Yeah!

Syr snorted.

"Bunsen, let down your guard. They are friends." The man said, as his weapon suddenly turned into a big, black scorpion. This Scorpion...this is his familiar. He's telling the truth after all."I saw Mari, but you were trying to pass her off as a fly or something, so I figured I'd play along," He grabbed a box of crackers and threw it into his basket. "I just assumed that you didn't want to say anything around others who wouldn't understand. I was about ready to tell you my intentions when you decided to attack me. As far as other reapers are concerned, I'm not sure if there are any others. If there isn't, does it make more sense to not be at each other's throats? Forgive me for not Introducing myself before. I'm Tony, former Hell's Angel. Nice to meet a fellow reaper, Alex," he said with a slight grin, "and this beside me is Bunsen, my familiar." Bunsen waved a pincer at both Alex and Mari.

Alex stared at Tony. Hells Angel? Well, he seems nicer than someone might think."Alright, I guess." He took Tony's hand and gave a firm handshake. "I'm Alex, and this is Mari. Sorry about the rocky start, I have a past with fighting so it was kind of habit. Also, I thought you were a Demon." Mari cooed happily, landing in front of Bunsen, giving friendly chirps. Alex looked at his watch, and then looked at Tony. "Are you gonna check-out now?" He pointed at the basket. "My shift's almost over. We can hang out if you want, I have some more things I wanna ask you."
