The current patch, patch 4.2 is available at https://drive.google.com/file/d/15Rdzs6rOsON609TJQe6uiRcym_q8I4pC/view?usp=sharing

to do list before the next big patch is released:

Latest patch: 12 april 2022: Patch 4.2. Revives contests, updates documentation, reimplements a joke dex entry patch, adds new gym puzzles to sootopolis and mauville, adds a new trade, a nature switcher, and a boy in mauville who tells you what moves a Pokémon can be tutored.

Patch Notes:
Spoiler:
Patch 4.2

Contests are back, with move data and combos for the new moves courtesy of dizzy egg/chacha/lunos (gen1-6). I've added move data for my custom moves and for gen 7.
Updated the stat documentation completely
The Secret Power shop in slateport now sells Eject Buttons and Red Cards
Added a Nature Switcher in the battle frontier
Added a new trader in the battle frontier
Added a boy in Mauville that tells you what moves your Pokemon can learn from Move Tutors
Trades have better IVs
Redid the layout for dewford, mauville, lavaridge and sootopolis gym
Added a joke patch (and a couple of other patches). Merry April Fools.
Nerfed Tate and Liza's party leads from lv52 to lv48

Pokemon Changes:
Castform has far less access to rock moves but learns aurora veil, hydro pump, and sandblaster and is now in the fast experience group.
Regigigas heavily nerfed from erratic xp group to Medium Fast.
***This change will cause your pokemon's level to change drastically when it next gains experience. This causes a visual glitch. Also, it can trigger the pomeg glitch. Neither of these things are dangerous to your save file.***

Qwlifish now learns Barb Barrage instead of dive (at level 34). 15 power, 100 accuracy, 5pp. Hits thrice. Each hit lowers the target's defense. New signature move.
Kabutops now learns Stone Axe instead of Rock Slide (at level 45). 80 power, 95 accuracy, makes contact and switches the target out. -5 priority. New signature move.

Huntail/Gorebyss now learn moves much later to match the level they're obtainable. Wild Lanturn and Sharpedo have 5% chance to hold deepseascale/tooth respectively

Beautifly learns Bug Buzz rather than Silver Wind
Butterfree now learns Silver Wind early in place of Powder, and later learns Revelation Dance in place of silver wind. Now has serene grace in place of tinted lens

Wynaut now learns mirror coat and counter at lv10, rather than lv15
Rayquaza now learns aeroblast instead of dragon ascent
Wild Sableye all hold Normal Gems

Surskit now evolves at lv22 correctly, and Barboach evolves at lv30 correctly.

Bug finds:
The game remains slightly unstable in battles. The battle frontier is especially unstable. I have unwittingly meddled in saveblocks in my youth and now I'm paying the price. I don't have the time to fix these errors, which are very rare in normal playthroughs in the main story. Use regular savestates to be safe.
Some movepools have been found to be so large the name relearner cannot load all of them. Gardevoir is affected. This is largely a graphical bug, and I'm not skilled at ASM. Apologies for leaving it in. Thanks to Devix on discord.

Bug fixes:
Removed some duplicate items and updated the documentation
Put an explanatory signpost in gauntlet island
Fixed a small number of nonfuctional fishing spots in route 119
Fixed errors with the move tustor in battle frontier
Shelves are not headbuttable and instead have books
Fixed dialog for petalburg pokemart and pa'i canyon
fixed spooky healer bug
Porygon line can no longer breed. This is because its breeding line is an infinite loop and was causing a crash.
Fixed minor error in the battle frontier
Fixed tabitha post battle speech and the togekiss sprite
Fixed the movement permission and visual bugs in gauntlet island, trainer hill, route 119 and pa'i canyon
No longer possible to trap yourself route 135
Magma hideout a little easier
Dusk stone on fray manor is now an item ball, dream mail now a hidden item. locations unchanged.
Fixed decap error on the marill there
Fixed rare softlock in rusturf tunnel
Fixed a small child who said "zigzagoon"

What happens when you take (almost) every move and ability from gen 1 to 7, add some new ones to the mix, and then cram them into just 386 Pokémon?
You get an amount of diversity the main games only dream of. Around half the abilities are signature abilities, and moves are no different! You can catch all your favourites here, and you'll find them stronger and more defined than ever before.

On top of that, I've rebalanced and re-teamed the trainers and gym leaders, then freshened up every route in Hoenn and added five new ones. And I love the puzzles: they're optional, fair, and absolutely devilish.

On with the show!
Starring:
  • Dizzy Egg's/Chacha Dinosaur's emerald battle engine: most moves, many items, and all types, phys/spec split, abilities, capture xp, and all abilities (especially the cool ones) up to generation 7 are in the game
  • The palette has been made more vibrant All routes have been remodeled, some islands have been added in the sea, victory road is completely new and exciting, and 5 new (fully optional) routes have been added: a canyon, a haunted house, an extension to route 119's river, a snowy mountain, and a mine.
  • So many quality of life changes!
    • Fly to routes
    • Access Pokémarts downstairs in all Pokémon Centres
    • Use Nature Power as a replacement for all of Strength, Rock Smash, Cut, Surf, Waterfall, and Dive, or just use the old HMs as usual
    • Evolve your team into all their later generation evolutions
    • Evolve trade evos that require items by just levelling them up while holding that item, and evolve all other trade evos at lv36 (or evolve gengar by happiness at night)
    • Reuse tms and move tutors as much as you want
    • Shiny rate doubled to match later generations (with the itemfinder)
    • Run indoors
    • Delete all HMs
    • Use the updated repel system,
    • Access all the secret base items,
    • A few storyline rewrites (the Magma Base is now an enjoyable little sneaking mission where you have to avoid getting seen. )
    • An ability switcher in Mauville
    • An egg hatcher in Verdanturf
    • An IV checker and nature changer in the Battle Frontier (with the option to perfect EVs at a price)
    • An EV checker that can reduce all EVs to 0 by converting them into EV items. 15 EVs make one EV item. e.g a mon with 37 HP Evs would give you 2 HP UPs.
    • Optional patch with 20 more type changes
    • And even more QOL improvements!
      Spoiler:
HM use in overworld takes fewer button presses, same goes for Berry planting
      Poison doesn't hurt in overworld
Daycare man now steps directly in the way of the bike path on route 117 to alert when an egg is hatched
Game corner times are cheaper, and buying the currency is more expensive (Overall cost of items is the same in pokedollars, but playing the slots is relatively more rewarding now. This change was made specifically to encourage minors to gamble.)
Ashblower items are half price, huff-puff
Battle frontier items cost eight times less (Now 32BP for a lapras doll down from 256bp)
Stat screen displays natures' +/- stats (see screenshots)
      Both bikes obtainable in overworld
Fossil resurrector now resurrects every fossil you're holding all in one go
Sitrus berries can be farmed for $$$ efficiently, having a reasonable resale price
Pickup table updated to remove TMs and replace them with useful new items:

  • 417 pokémon are available, all of which have been tinkered, polished, dusted off and enhanced. All of them are really cool to use, and I've tried them all. Highlights include:
    • Disguise Sudowoodo complete with a form change

    • Levitate Electrode with a move that calculates damage based on speed. And of course electro ball
    • Porygon/Porygon2 that changes from one to the other every level
    • Ariados with a learnset based round toxic thread (now badly poisons and halves speed), baneful bunker, venom drench, and venoshock and access to electroweb and psychic fangs

    • Broil, fire, a priority move that maximises the target’s defense and burns. Learned by magby, Flareon and torchic
    • Metallurgy, steel, 75 power special move, deals damage and grants the target Steel typing. TM
    • Shield Slam, 70 power but calculates off user's defense stat instead of its attack stat. (Forretress, Clamperl, Blastoise and Aggron)
    • Coal Toss, Rock, special, 60 power, burns anything it hits. (Golem, Torkoal, Camerupt)
    • Puff up, normal, drastically raises Sp.Def. (Jigglypuff, Qwilfish, and Wailord)
    • Horn Crash, normal, 80 power, raises defense. (Nidoking, Seaking, Rhydon, Pinsir, and Aggron)

    New signature moves

    Spoiler:
    • Snow In is like a special, ice type version of Earthquake, but with the added effect that it maximises the special defence of everyone hit. Learned by Snorunt.
    • Meltdown, 130 power, 5pp, water type special move that removes the user's Ice typing. Learned by Walrein.
    • Sugar Crunch, 60 power physical fairy type move with a 30% chance to raise Attack and Speed, solely for Mawile and Granbull
    • Super Spitup, is a 200 power spit up clone, poison type. Learned by Swalot and Victreebel

  • Barb Barrage, is a 10 power, 5pp poison type move that hits thrice and lowers defense with each hit. Qwilfish signature.
UPDATED OLD MOVES

Sky attack now 50% chance to flinch, Special (now a usable option for serene gracers)
Mega Punch now additionally raises the user’s attack (for the benefit of pixilate granbull, parental bond kangaskhan, etc)
Shadow Punch now ignores all barriers, substitutes, and protections, and has 75 power (sates a lot of need for physical ghost stab)
Foresight/Miracle Eye/Odor Sleuth/Scrappy now make all moves hit through all type immunities rather than just their respective ones.

Snatch now steals all non-attacking moves instead
Magic Coat now steals all special attacking moves instead (Spoink signature)
Cross Poison now 100 power, 90 acc

Also some changes to signature moves.

Spoiler:

Sketch now has 5 pp rather than 1
Hyper Fang now deals half the target's MAX hp (minus 1) as damage. (Super Fang deals half the target's CURRENT hp)
Toxic Thread lowers speed 2 stages and applies Toxic
Steel Wing now has 100% chance to raise defense, no longer a TM (Skarmory)

A comprehensive list of all Pokémon's Learnset and Ability changes comes packaged up with the rom, along with the .ini (for pge, if you want to make your own tweaks), and some patches for optional features. There's one to allow revives to be used in battle again

-------------------------

This rom is complete, and has a good amount of postgame from emerald, but I still occasionally update it with new features. This used to happen pretty regularly, but now I've switched to just doing larger, more infrequent patches, with more playtesting. Please use the Discord server for bug reports.

Puzzle Walkthroughs and hints (Pa'i canyon, victory road, and the Second Bike. (There are image gifs in the discord)
Spoiler:
Northmost item, route 119.
Spoiler:
You will need a pokemon with Hyper Cutter and Cut. Try trapinch

The second bike
Spoiler:
located on route 129, on an island to the east. I'm sure you can find it, even though the itemfinder's not picking it up! Follow the flowers.

Pa'i canyon
Left boulder puzzle:
Spoiler:
when you push a boulder down the slope, you keep bumping into it and it goes all the way to the bottom. However, when you push one boulder into another, it doesn't move!
All you have to do is move the lower boulder up until it's 2 steps below the way to the item, then push the upper boulder all the way down until it hits the lower boulder. Then dismount your bike and grab the item.

Right boulder puzzle
Spoiler:
When you ride up the mach bike slope, you can take one step left, then fall back to the bottom. The rest should be self explanatory. (Do it again).

Hidden cave in the south
Spoiler:
You can reach this from under the bridge on its left.

Walking through trees
Spoiler:
If you look closely, the trees you can walk through look slightly offset from the rest. Use this to spot paths to items

Cave warp maze
Spoiler:
Just re-enter every cave as you exit it. Eventually you'll wind up coming out of the far rightmost cave. Talk to the boulder on your left. A door will open. Go through it.

Braille
Spoiler:
If you could access the third braille sign, it would say "of". What might "Triangle" be referring to?

Victory road
3 magnemite
Spoiler:
One of these magnemite can move up 2, down 2, left 2 or right 2. That means it can only reach one of the bridge opening crystals. The other two can move three spaces in one of their directions. Use this to move them to the other crystals, a bit like how you did with the last puzzle.

Ice puzzles
North-west puzzle
Spoiler:
Use surf

Strength puzzle
Spoiler:
For both of these, you need to move the boulder that you can reach into a spot with a circle on it. You can probably figure the rest out from there.

Hidden Item strength puzzle
Spoiler:
You'll need a boulder, and a good sense of whereabouts the itemfinder is pointing you. Plan your route!

Ice puzzle floor 2.
Spoiler:
This requires pictures to explain. It is possible, though! Just like the previous floor, you need to move these boulders to specific locations, but I'll leave it to you to work out where they are. Good luck.

FAQ/walkthrough
Spoiler:
Where's Cut?
Spoiler:
House to the left of the pokemon center in Rustboro

Where do I go after Flannery?
Spoiler:
Petalburg Gym, but you may as well do some exploring beforehand. I recommend the desert, fiery path, and route 115!

What's this Devon scope and where do I get it??
Spoiler:
It's given to you on a bridge on route 120.

What's going on with this item ball in a tricky puzzle location!?
Spoiler:
Check "Secret Stuff"

Why isn't e.g grovyle a dragon!?
Spoiler:
I mean while it'd make it "better" in the sense that it'll be stronger, it is also weird as hell. if you have any type change requests please use pge, I gave you the roms.ini file to make it work

Team Recommendations:
Spoiler:
If your team seems samey, flesh it out with one or two of these for some variety:

Baton Passer (Aipom, mawile, Ledian, Furret, Ninjask, plusle/minun) or Stat boost guy (Illumise, Volbeat, Omanyte, Clefable, Shedinja, Claydol)
Tank (Shroomish, Sudowoodo, Parasect, pain splitters like misdreavus, or anything with a huge defense stat like Torkoal or Chimecho)
Fast High Attack Thing just to beat wild mons easily (dodrio, fearow, mankey, electrike, vulpix)
Terrain/Weather User (Sandshrew, Larvitar, Swinub, Politoed/Pelipper, Sunflora/Torkoal, Chinchou/ Magneton, Chikorita, Stantler, Swablu) This game really rewards you for using weather, not just for rain and sun but for Hail and Sand too. Hail now boosts ice type defense by 1.5x.
Any aromatherapy user. There's too many things with access to tm05 Aromatherapy to list, but also stuff with Milk drink or Softboiled (miltank, cacturne, Chansey) is really cool.

Really fun team: Aipom, Geodude, Pikachu, Sunkern, Illumise, Nidoqueen
You could also pick all 3 Pokémon with Dancer (grumpig, Spinda, Ludicolo)

Fun monotype runs:
Grass (easy mode) (parasect, treecko, sunkern, hoppip, Roselia, shroomish, Lileep, Cacnea)
Bug (Also pretty easy) (volbeat, illumise, butterfree, yanmega, dustox, anorith, venomoth)
Normal
Psychic
Electric (Elekid core, Mareep, Pikachu, Static in general)
Ice (hail team with Swinub and Seel core)
Bug (Shuckl, Spinarak, Ledyba, volbeat, beedrill)
Poison (Nidorina core. Poison types now take 25% less damage from poisoned foes too, so toxic spikes in a poison monotype is great)

Known Bugs:
Spoiler:

Little glitches
Spoiler:

Not really bugs, just laziness, but like I'll put them here:
- Some moves have the same animations as others
- new mons have cries adapted from old ones
- Breeding is not updated to new mechanics. Everstone nature passing still works, and there is an IV perfecter, an ev resetter, and an ability switcher, but no destiny knot stuff because the alternatives I have provided are much less grindy.
-Battle Pyramid currently unavailable

Graphical inaccuracies
-Battle text boxes don't match the base game perfectly. e.g. there is no message for Misty Terrain blocking sleep, playing on battle style Shift sometimes announces all pokémon as if they're owned by the wrong people when sent out, defog and charge say the move name as their stat change, Stun Spore appears to trigger Stamina and Wonder Guard.
-acid spray and explosion can cause some comedy gold visual bugs in double battles (fixed by replacing the animations but do I want to? no)
-Steven appears as the player sprite for a couple seconds when fighting Maxie in Mossdeep Space Centre
- When the map is zoomed in, a scrambled part becomes visible at the top.
- Locations on the town map have not been adjusted to match the new maps at all.
- Explosion can cause graphical bugs

Oddities
- Certain status applying features (like synchronise or toxic orb) go through some immunities
- Trainers will rarely use Potions even when there's no health to heal.
- Shedinja can force opponents to switch, even if they only have one pokemon. They send out "nothing".
- [email protected] roams forever

Gamebreakers that should no longer be an issue
- The game may apparently hard-lock when approaching Rayquaza on Sky Tower. (please use VBA, or VBA-M and patch with LIPS. I believe these bugs are caused by emulators/flawed patching. I have not changed the rayquaza script from vanilla emerald.)
- Iapapa Berry may apparently crash the game when looked at in the bag. (please use VBA, or VBA-M, and patch with LIPS. I believe these bugs are caused by emulators/flawed patching. I have not edited the Iapapa item icon/bag data from vanilla emerald.)
- Prior to 4.1b, under certain conditions an enemy trainer’s ditto or pokemon with sketch can overload the battle engine’s memory, which can break checksums (creating a bad egg). There are no longer any trainers with either.
- Prior to 4.1b, when Flannery's Flareon infatuated a traded pokemon while it is disobeying orders, the traded pokemon turned into a bad egg. I've removed attract from Flannery's Flareon. Presumably, this bug was not limited to flannery.

Bugs that cause serious crashes
- When Ditto transforms into a Pokemon with Gravitate, the game crashes.
- Self-destruction moves used against certain pokemon by certain pokemon in certain conditions completely crashes the game. (details????) I've removed several instances of selfdestruction from several trainers, but there are some I will have missed.
- The battle frontier corrupts save file data. If you use savestates, you shouldn't have problems.

VBA-M is thoroughly recommended as an emulator, as it's the one I use to test. It is also available on the largest number of platforms! Visual Boy Advance also works but may have teething issues and show a white screen - I've included a .sav file in the rom with a blank file. emulators on the PSP apparently also suffer similar issues to VBA
Please install only one Altered Emerald patch on a rom at a time. If you haven't played since before patch 3, it might be worth starting a new game, else you'll probably suffer from some serious teething issues with your save file.

Hope you enjoy! Please do drop me an honest rating out of 5 when you're done : )

Chronosplit's also made you some patches that replace the gen 3 starters in this rom with the starters from gen 1 or gen 2.

Seems cool. Interesting that this wasn't put into the sideshw showcase. I'll probably give it a try.

Wait, what's the sideshow showcase?
EDIT: Oh, gotcha. Yeah, that is a grey area. It is actually more than just a 386 difficulty patch, I promise! The story progresses through routes in a slightly different order, and like I say, every route and city got a few tweaks, and so did every pokemon. It's like pokemon BW versus B2W2 level of changes.

edit 2: this post has aged badly lmao, I moved it to the sideshow showcase in like June, cause the storyline is nearly the same as emerald. I'd rather promise less and impress than promise more and disappoint

Thanks to DizzyEgg, Lunos and the EBEU team for the battle engine, features, dynamic expansion, and the mind-bogglingly excellent disassembly project, lu-ho for a-map, Gamer2020 for pge, about 5 different hex editors, especially HexEdit which didn't suck, Microsoft Windows for Task Manager, Chaos rush for sprites and an animation disable tutorial, Spherical Ice for several excellent asm routines, Neon Skylar for Pokemon data past gen 3, YAPE while it lasted, Scizz, Knizz, darthatron's numerous tools, hackmew, Chronosplit.

Altered Emerald is very old. Its final patch marks about 9 years since I started meddling with the Emerald rom. I won't forget it, but I think it makes sense to call it a wrap. This game is in a good state, with only difficult and mundane bugs remaining. Any further changes to Pokémon are left as an exercise to the reader.
After all, you have the roms.ini files, and Gamer2020's PGE, and access to the full force of the disassembly's documentation. Go screw up my game for me? Or better yet, steal my ideas, and make them your own?

Thanks for all the years. I am still blown away by the response this got.

I do like it overall from the looks of it. Not gonna lie though, while on one hand the move/typing etc changes will make the game fresh but I kinda sorta dislike this as well.
Highly appreciate slight changes in maps and overall higher difficulty. I might try this hack later.

This looks great! you should think about patching in some mega evolutions tho, there are some pretty easy battle engines you can just apply with a patch, but you might have to mess around with offsets since you've already added a bunch of stuff

EDIT: btw, this is gonna get taken down p soon, you're not allowed to link directly to a rom file, you have to link a patch (ips or ups)

Just to warn that there IS swearing in this hack, caught a female Nidoran and it mentions the F word in her pokedex entry.

Why people insist in putting swearing in Pokemon I have no idea, but that's just me.
This is hilarious.

Imma patch this out, I thought id updated and removed it but apparently not! give me about an hour.
It's oddly funny having to veto a whole slew of my own dex entries for old edgy teen humour

EDIT: FIXED THIS!! ITS RUDE FREE AGAIN LADS

Also fixed this

Thanks for reading the rules for me, I'm really sorry guys, I literally just chucked the thread up and assumed I didn't need to check anything. Probs the most useful feedback I could have wished for lmao

EDIT:
Can you please provide another download link to the patch? I can't seem to be able to download it on my android browser and I don't want to download their app.
I've now also attached it to my post. If that doesn't work just hmu again!

Wow is this polished so far. I'm really enjoying the way you've utilized the basics of the game to the fullest instead of needing to artificially add features or anything like that.

Any hints for the condition for Splash to work?
I'm really sorry to say that Splash's move description of "deals huge damage under certain conditions" might just be a cheeky joke; Splash still does absolutely nowt! Have fun with hoppip!

EDIT: just patched out some expletives I missed. There were never any in the main story text iirc, just in the dex cause it's the oldest. Magikarp is also no longer called magikrap. If you bump into any more, hit me up #KeepThatERating

where is hm dive
dude you've gotten far, what the heck! How do you like it so far?

Dive is on route 135, south of Mt. Pyre on the town map. There's a girl with pink hair who gives it you. Should I put in a few more things pointing to her?

I feel like I might give this a try, if you keep on working on it. I do like difficulty patches and ones with the complete pokedex but I feel like you could try to add more features like mega evolutions or BW repel system which are in a lot of new rom hacks. It does look good though, I have been waiting for some Hoenn updates like a sequel or made in the DS style and this does look like what I've been asking for. You may want to check out Pokemon Ruby 2 and Sapphire 2 in the Progressing Hacks thread.

I agree with BW repels, although I really think the random encounters give routes a lot of feel. It'd be an improvement, though, so I'll probably chuck it in next time I inevitably update lol

I thought about Mega evolutions, and I think they're unnecessary. If I just chuck them in, it'll screw the difficulty unless I put them in postgame, and much as I've done some charming price reductions in the battle frontier I really doubt anyone will keep playing on once they beat wallace!
Then, even if I bash and tweak them into a less powerful shape, it turns out that megas are essentially less fun than a thunderstone evolution. The only difference is that you have to click more stuff in battle and you have less customisation options because your item slot is gone. If I wanted to add in a mega banette, I would instead change banette's base stats and ability, or do it as a moon stone evo. I'm definitely not going to do this, I don't think it adds anything positive.

In my mind, this hack's virtually in it's final state. I might get myself a moves and abilities patch and make use of that, but honestly there's more than enough different strategies to use already, and I don't think it needs more. I also have uni commitments! I'll wait until someone plays it and says it needs more variety.

Edit 1.5yrs later: "in my mind this hack's virtually in its final state" absolutely psyduckin wrong I redid virtually every map, updated the battle engine, added two more routes, added all gen 4 evos and several fancy new moves, and then chucked in a full visual overhaul lol

Give it a shot though, I bet you'll have fun! Thanks a bunch for the recommendation.

EDIT: Credit to danny0317 and Phenom2122, what absolute machines, I now have the full BW repel system working ingame!!!

Sorry to be that guy, but I'm pretty sure rattata is spelled wrong in the game as ratatta.
That's an extra old in joke. Is carvanha by any chance spelled carvahna?
EDIT: yep, wow. It is. I never thought anyone would spot that!
it's fixed, but I'm not releasing a patch just yet

#cybercrime_central on the Nuzlocke Forum Discord server got a bunch of good laughs at your Pokedex entries, thank you so much.

The only issue I see in the screenshots is the blue-roofed gym, which looks ugly as hell. Otherwise, this looks pretty neat! I like how you make the grass bridges. Pretty interesting.

Porygon -> Porygon2 @lv22
Porygon2 -> Porygon @lv23

What does this mean exactly? Will Porygon2 keep trying to devolve into Porygon at every level or something?
Yeah what's up with that? Been thinking of using Porygon2 in this hack since its one of my fav pokemon but I don't want it to..."devolve" after one level.

Where can you find Porygon anyway? Not sure if I reached that point yet or passed it by mistake.
