Intro
Have you ever imagine yourself managing a musical group - specifically a string sextet? You can try to run one here, but Pokemon-style. Yes, this challenge is called String Hexalocke (a.k.a. String Hexad-locke / Sextet-locke, as sextet and hexad are the same thing) which basically emulates the typical string sextet consisting of two violins, two violas, and two cellos.

Rules
1. Only first encounter per area can be caught. Dupes clause is recommended here. For those who play Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee, these rules are replaced by:
  • Only first catch per area can be used. Subsequent catches in the same area are only allowed for grinding due to the game mechanics and they must be released ASAP.
  • Dupes clause is still recommended here, but a second Pikachu/Eevee (depending on your game) counts for the first encounter since your starter can't evolve. However, a third one no longer counts.
2. You must name everything useable (as mentioned in rule #1).
3. Just like the real-life string sextet, the maximum capacity of your party is six: 2 violinists (violin players), 2 violists (viola players), and 2 cellists (cello players). And no, this isn't a Wedlocke, so you're allowed to shuffle the members around as long as they don't break the formation. As for which Pokemon is which, see here:
Spoiler:
2z521ja.jpg
  • The types used in this classification can be either primary or secondary or Shuffle-style (as in Pokemon types in Pokemon Shuffle). Whichever you use, just be consistent throughout the whole game.
  • Groupings may change depending on evolution (e.g. Eevee) or item-induced type change (e.g. Arceus and Silvally) or form change (e.g. Oricorio).
  • That being said, unless you either play Let's Go Eevee or randomize your game, your starter is guaranteed to be a violinist. Eevee will be a violist instead and your starting instrument for randomizers matches whatever Pokemon you get.

4. A Pokemon breaks its instrument upon fainting. If that happens, it must be retired. (this is basically the "death" rule in a regular Nuzlocke, just worded differently)
  • Exception: Said Pokemon gets a new instrument (read: revived) when auto-heal ensues with no access to PC box (perhaps in a cutscene or something).
5. Gifts and eggs given by NPCs may be used.
6. Shiny and legendary Pokemon can be considered as virtuosos, so they can be caught regardless of rule #1. However, only a virtuoso per instrument can be in the party at the same time (total up to 3 virtuosos).
  • Optional: The legendary part may be omitted, thus making this rule a limited shiny clause.
7. HM buddies can be caught only if you absolutely have to. Their placement must follow rule #3 and must not be used for battles if they break rule #1 and/or #4.
  • Exception: this rule is null and void in gen 7 games because they have their own HM equivalents: Poke Ride (Alola-based) and Secret Technique (Kanto-based)
8. All these rules only kick in after receiving your first Pokeballs.
  • Exception: rule #3, it kicks in as soon as you get your starter instead.
9. For any of you who want more, the ultimate challenge is available for you. No need to do everything in order, just one game per region will do.

End Points
Spoiler:

No updates from others yet? Awkay, I gotta double-post here. However, if nobody post here after this, I might have to triple-post (or even multi-post) for my own (re-)updates. Doesn't it feel like too spammy?

Seems like it's very lonely here, but I'll start one of my own hexalockes soon, don't worry. Might go for Hoenn first this time.

Sorvete's Ultimate String Hexalocke Challenge
Games: 0/8

Pokémon Omega Ruby
Deaths: 0 | Badges: 0

Part 1
Dear Alexandra,

It's getting hard, it seems like I can't trust anyone. Wish I was there with you.

February 2nd, 2017

My journey starts tomorrow! This is so exciting, can't wait to get my first Pokémon already. I bought this journal to record interesting things that might happen, but I don't want anyone to read it, alright?
----------
February 3rd, 2017

I chose Mudkip! I was pretty indecisive about my starter, actually, but I ultimately choose him because it's even cuter in person! Her, I mean, it's a girl. Professor Birch said those are rarer than the boys, lucky me! Her name is gonna be Wendy!
----------
February 4th, 2017

I arrived in Petalburg this morning, and found dad at the gym! He doesn't seem to want to battle me yet, though, says I'm still too weak. Guess I'll have to get a few badges first. I also made new friends along the way, a Poochyena, Carl, and a Taillow, Mel.
----------
February 5th, 2017

I didn't realize it would be so hard to get past Petalburg Woods, took me about 8 hours to figure a way out. I'm glad I found a friendly scientist at the end to show me the path. He was being harassed by an evil man, but I defeated him in a battle. I'm here at Rustboro and my battle against Ms. Roxanne will be tomorrow. I need to rest now.
----------
February 8th, 2017

It's been some time since I wrote here, but a lot of things happened! I got my first badge pretty easily, it seems like Water-types like Wendy have an advantage against Rock-types like Geodude, and Roxanne used rocks! I also helped that scientist again and his boss asked me to do a favor for him, so I went to Dewford. There's another gym leader there who uses Fighting-types. Clyde told me Flying-types are supereffective against them, so I used Ruth, my Beautifly, in the gym. She had learned Gust recently, so it would be perfect. The battle was easy for me, second badge acquired! Mr. Brawly also complimented my battle strategies and said I would be a very successful battler in the future, how nice of him!
----------
February 10th, 2017

I delivered the letter to Mr. Steven, and Mr. Briney took me to Slateport. I was gonna check the museum, but I decided to take a break for a bit at the Pokémon Center and listen to some Coldplay. Their Rush of Blood to the Head album is amazing.
----------
February 15th, 2017

It's been a long time since my last update here, but I'm pretty nervous at the moment. Rachel, a Minun I caught, was heavily injured and they're taking care of her at the Pokémon center since yesterday. I just hope for the best. I'm here at Mauville and the city is huge, but I don't think I'll be sightseeing for a while.

Notes: Sorry about this weird kind of Journal thing, and I know it doesn't have anything to do with music at all (save that Coldplay mention), but I am following the regular hexalocke rules and everything, just had thought of this type of update and figured I wanted to do something different this time. Don't know if I'm gonna keep this format for future challenges, but I will for the Hoenn arc. Here are the important things that happened if you didn't read or can't interpret the story:

- I got my first 2 badges;
- One death ocurred. It was a Minun who died by a critical hit.

Also another important note: I am using the exp. share for this to save the grinding, but I might turn it off if the game gets too easy later on.

And now I'll post my current team and the backup in the PC.

Hey, nice journal you got there.
And speaking of the musical references, that's totally optional. Depending on your writing style, that is. :wink-right-eye:

Fen's Fantastic Forte

Day One

FireRed
Spoiler:

Tonight I start my journey! My goal is to have at least one gym done per day. If I'm not busy with school, I'll definitely make that happen!

My first game will be FireRed. I named the player Fen, and chose Squirtle as my starter. That will be one of my violinists. I named my Squirtle Soul, after the anime Soul Eater.

So, basically what I'm going to do is slowly work on each game throughout the course of this challenge. I will work on them based on their generation. (1-7)

I deliver Oak's parcel in which he gives both gary and Fen a Pokedex. the last order of business for FireRed is catching my first Pokemon on Route 1.

My first Pokemon is Pidgey, which I will need for later. Maybe. I capture Pidgey and name it Whirlwind. This will be my only pokemon on Route 1, so I'll go ahead and save it.

HeartGold
Spoiler:

I boot up TwilightMenu, in which I go to my HeartGold ROM. (I do have a physical copy, but it's SoulSilver and I'm using it for a personal play.)

I get the usual Oak introduction. I choose girl and name myself Fen. I'm approached by the mom, who says the Professor is looking for me. I change the text speed to fast and put the battles scenes on off.

I think my favorite part about this game is getting to walk with your Pokemon. I choose Totodile, and name him Spark. Since the next part is kind of long, I'm going to just fast forward ahead to Mr. Pokemon's House. Oak gives Fen the Pokedex. I travel back to my hometown. Before I can even leave Cherrygrove City, Silver stops me. After a very long battle, I'm finally able to get back to the lab.

Skipping ahead a little bit, Ethan shows us how to catch Pokemon. I've already decided what Pokemon I want from Route 29. It's going to be a Hoot-Hoot. And I got it on the first encounter! But I killed it...Lemme try that again. I get a Hoot-Hoot second encounter and end up catching it. I name it Wings.

This is a good place to stop for this game. Let's move on to the next one.

AlphaSapphire

Spoiler:

I put AlphaSapphire in and delete the save data. I get the game set up and choose girl and name myself Fenberry. Then I exit the truck.

The mom introduces us around the house as the Machoke's are leaving. I got next door to Birch's house and go through that dialogue.

I meet Brendan, and he goes through his script. Fenberry leaves and goes up to Route 101. There, I choose Treecko as my starter , since my last two have been water starters. I fight the Poochyena. Birch takes us back to his lab, where I get Treecko and name him Nine, after the ragdoll movie. I fight a few Wurmples and get to Oldale Town. I got past the town and to Route 103 where Brendan is.

I defeat him in a battle. Nine levels up. We both head back to the lab. Birch gives me a pokedex while Brendan gives me Poke balls.

I get to Route 101 again and attempt the catch the special Poochyena. I catch it! This will be my catch for Route 101. This is a good place to save.

White

Spoiler:

I delete the save data on pokemon white before entering the game. I'm met with Professor Juniper. She does her speech before she asks for my name and gender. I choose girl and name myself Fen.

For my starter, I choose Tepig, because i havne't chosen a fire starter yet. After that, Cheren and Bianca battle Fen.

Skipping ahead a little bit, I catch my first Pokemon, patrat, and name it patty. Professor Juniper had given me Pokeballs to catch Pokemon with. When I get to Accumula town, Team Plasma does its script before N challenges me. patty ends up fainting, though my Tepig, named giggle, ends up defeating his Purrloin.

A casualty already! Geez! I go bac to the Pokemon Center and put it into the box labeled 'Retired'.

After that, I go to Route 2 and catch myself a Lillipup, in which I name it Snoot. I heal Snoot and Giggle up, This is a good place to save.

Next is Gen 6, Y. Let's do this!

Y

Spoiler:

I start up Pokemon Y, in which I name myself Fenberry. My character gets dressed before heading out the door to meet Calem and Shauna.

I choose Fennekin, because I have never chose nFennekin while playing through this Gen. I name him Fen 2.0. (I'm the original Fen!)

I receive the Pokedex and get the letter I should deliver to the character's mom. I get into a battle with Shauna, and defeat her no problem.

I travle a little bit and encounter a Pidgey. That might be what I catch for Route 2. A Bunnelby might also be a good choice. Calem gives me Poke balls. I then explore the tall grass.

I decide that Pidgey will be my Route 2 choice. I catch it. I name it salvester. I heal up my pokemon. This is a good place to stop.

Sun

Spoiler:

I start up Sun and get the usual Kukui appearance.

I choose girl and name myself Fenberry.

Skipping ahead a little bit, we travel to iki town, where the player sees Lillie walking into the ruins. we end up rescuing her.

I choose Litten as my starter, and my violist. I name him Leo.

I meet Hau and we battle. I defeat him with Leo. I go back to home and awake the next day where I see the Professor agian. he takes me to Route 1 and shows me how to catch Pokemon. I thing I'll catch Pikipek as my cellist. I end up getting Pokeballs and catch my Pikipek. This is a good place to stop now.

Note: I'm skipping Pearl because I don't have the ROM downloaded.

Fen's Fantastic Forte, Day 2

Today I'll be focusing on just FireRed and completing that first gym.

Adventure

Spoiler:

I'm back in my game of FireRed on Route 1. My goal today is to defeat Brock. I level up my Pidgey, (whirlwind), before doing anything else. On Route 22, I decide that the Pokemon I want to catch ther eis Mankey. I encounter it and catch it. I name it Saw. After leveling up Whirlwind, I put Saw in a PC box. I won't need him now.

I get challenged by Gary, which is slightly easier than I expected. I take out his Bulbasaur and Pidgey with my whirlwind.

I continue on to Viridian Forest, but I'm stopped by the old man who teaches me how to catch Pokemon.

On Route 2, I decide not to catch anything. I just move on to Viridian Forest where my first encounter is a Weedle. I decide against it, though. I'm going to try to catch a Pikachu.

I don't end up doing that and just catch a Caterpie instead. After that, I battle few trainers, evolve my Caterpie, (which I named Beep), and then I'm out of Viridian Forest. I arrive in pewter city . My next stop is to challenge Brock. Beep evolves into butterfree, and I defeat Brock easily.

As a composer working on string works right now (I'm writing my first string quartet at this time), this is very interesting. Who knows - maybe I'll write a string sextet and use the flow of Pokemon on my team to help define how I write the work. Music inspiring Pokemon inspiring Music!

As soon as I get a chance today, I'm going to get started on Crystal and see what happens!

Hello, this seems interesting! I would like to give this a try! Let's make it a bit more challenging!

Username: Celèste
Game(s): Red, Gold, Alpha Sapphire, Brilliant Diamond, Black (Rom), X, Moon
Instrument groups: Shuffle
Challenge: Ultimate

PS: I sadly don't have an Unova Game anymore 😢. If it's allowed to use an emulated Rom, I would go for Black! Also does BW2 count as an Unova game too or is it separate? If it is separate and I am allowed to use an emulated Rom, it would be White 2. I'll try to get started as soon as possible and I would most likely 1st finish Red before moving on or am I supposed to write all of them at the same time in the Updates?

Usually, whatever Region counts. So, OR/AS counts as Hoenn. B/W/B2/W2 are Unova. I've done runs on emulator, as long as you don't cheat it should be fine.

Best thing to do for an Ultimate is do them one at a time. Takes a bit to go through seven regions. I speak from experience having done two Ultimate monotypes - I got into the habit of two or three posts per region. It does make it easier for the mods to keep up on marking down what games you've completed.

I hate how costly gen 5 has become.

Okay thank you very much! ^^ I guess I'll go with Black in that case and I don't even really know how to use cheats on NDS Emulator, the only cheats I ever used were Fire Red Fan Games/Hacks on private playthroughs on GBA Emulator, but only because I got tired of grinding after a while.... 😅
