If it's an LCD monitor or laptop, you may have to enable ClearType...I'm not sure if you're using XP or not. I'm not even sure if it's available in XP. I just know how to get to it in Windows 7. Other than that, I have no idea what could be causing it.
 
It was the cleartype thing, according to her joyful response when I told her how to enable it.
