12 children die during bad luck ceremony
    Posted Mon Jun 7, 2010 3:42pm AEST

Twelve Indonesian children have died after a suspension bridge collapsed as they were taking part in a traditional ceremony to dispel bad luck, a local official said.

The accident took place in a remote village in Aceh.

"There were about 37 kids gathered together on a wire-cable suspension bridge when it collapsed and they fell into a river," district chief Ibnu Hasyim said.

Twenty-five children were rescued with minor injuries but 12 others - all below the age of 12 - were swept away in strong currents.

The children were watching a ritual ceremony to dispel misfortune after a measles outbreak in the area.

The adults were throwing offerings in the form of chickens into the river when the bridge collapsed, the official said.

Talk about some serious bad luck.

Though how does that make you feel and what's your opinion on bad/good luck?

Aceh is that part of Indonesia that has strict Islamic law, right?

Anyway. Wire cable bridge? Remote village? I'm just guessing here, but it sounds like the bridge might not have been the safest thing to be on. I believe you make your own luck and when you do something unsafe like these poor kids possibly did then you're bound to have something bad happen eventually.

:( I feel bad now because I laughed at this one too.
    Poor little kiddies. ;-;

    I'm a Jedi, though, so I don't believe in Luck. ;3

That was very sad indeed (as is always the case when young children lose their lives).

I, of course, do not believe in luck of any kind. A desirable outcome can only be brought by hard work, not by wearing a magical bracelet. Working hard dosn't nessecary mean you will succeed in all your endeavours, but if you don't then you almost certainly won't.

Not bad luck - 30+ kids on a wire suspension bridge, the outcome should have been expected. They may just be kids but their combined weight adds up. It was inevitable for it to happen some time.

I think Scarf said it best - "you create your own luck". Luck is just an illusion.

As sad as the death of these children was, hopefully the survivors will be a bit wiser about weight and bridges. Sad that people had to die first. It must have been traumatic for the kids.

"News flash! Bridge was three fourth of the way collapsed to begin with! Couldn't withstand a strong gust!"

Would not surprise me at all.
