The second integral part of the team's flank, the soldier is a mobile and lethal class to face against in the proper situations.

    Strengths
    • mid-range area control
    • rocket jumping mobility
    • pick class: high burst damage when in proper position
    • close-quarters combat
    • especially beneficial from height advantage

    Weaknesses
    • open area combat/combat on uneven ground
    • slow movement
    • small clip size

The Soldier and Scout play hand-in-hand in Highlander. Both extremely powerful flanking classes, the soldier can provide area denial and quickly bomb onto enemy ground to hold it. Splash-oriented combat makes him a powerful force against high-priority targets in Highlander, including, but not limited to, Sniper and Medic. Should the Medic wish, the Soldier can easily swing into a pocket Soldier role. With the Direct Hit equipped he can be vital to taking out enemy defenses when a Demoman can't.

The role of Soldier is quite simple. Choose your holds based on the area, and deal damage. You have great potential for damage output. When you spot an opening to get behind the enemy combo, take it. Wreak havoc on the sniper, deny their flank or jump the medic. Soldier is an expendable class with high damage output at close range, with the means of easily getting within that range. A smart soldier will position himself with an advantage in mind (ie. a barrier to hide behind while reloading) before and during a fight. He can also instigate a fight with the element of surprise by rocket jumping into his target's face, at the cost of one less rocket loaded. This can be especially risky when running Black Box, but promotes and rewards aim and well-timed rockets.

At even uber fights (both medics on either team has 100% ubercharge), it is widely accepted that the team that pops first is at a disadvantage. Your medic will often call on you or the scout to "force" a pop. A soldier flying in at 500 hammer units/second is a huge threat, especially if his first rocket landed hits the medic for 80-100. Forcing a pop is more often than not a suicide play. You will be faced with heavy-hitting classes who are there to protect the medic. In this case, forget about your life and focus on aiming the medic. If you got the force you've done your job.

To sum it up, Soldier is an incredibly fun class with plenty of potential to get picks, slow enemy pushes and deny space. As an explosive class, he is a threat regardless of the amount of enemies focusing him. When you hear your soldier call out a bomb, back him up!

I like Soldier, but I'm not very good with rocket jumping or even aiming those dang rockets. He is sooo slow. It's probably why I avoid Soldier as much as Medic. Just classes that don't fit for me.

Another awesome entry, buddy. Enjoying this series of articles.
