But yeah, some government needs to tell the media to shutdown on this topic. And China's government, I'll admit, is a bit paranoid. The best anyone can do is ignore the media comments on this, and just continue on with their lives, albeit a bit carefully.

Oh jeeze, the media is realy good at blowing things waaay out of proportion.

I read about this about 4 days before everyone was talking about it, the virus is easily killed by a common anti-viral medicine. The reason so many people in Mexico are dying is because they can't afford the doctors.

There have been a handful of deaths here in the U.S., chances are the only reason they died was because they went in too late.

But we should all avoid anyone with flu-like symptoms, now more than ever. Unless you really don't want to go to school.


Now bird flu (H5 N1), THAT'S something to worry over! 82% mortality rate in Indonesia! Remember when bird flu was the big deal? That's still out there and waay worse than this.

Quarantine for lonely Afghan pig

Afghanistan's only known pig has been quarantined because of fears over swine flu, officials from Kabul Zoo say.
The pig, a curiosity in a country where pork products are illegal, lives at the zoo, where he had previously enjoyed grazing next to deer and goats.
However visitors expressed fears that the animal could be carrying the H1N1 virus and he was moved into isolation.
The director of the zoo, Aziz Gul Saqib, says the pig, whose name is Khanzir, is strong and healthy.
Speaking to the BBC World Service, Mr Saqib says: "The only reason we moved him was because Afghan people don't have a lot of knowledge about swine flu, and so when they see a pig they get worried and think they will get ill."
The director says Khanzir, given to the zoo by China in 2002, has been moved to a large space with lots of windows and fresh air and that he hopes he will be quarantined for only a few days.
Acknowledging that being Afghanistan's only pig is a lonely existence, Mr Saqib says he hopes to find Khanzir a female companion soon.
However, he says, because of swine flu, "it is a dangerous and difficult time to get a new pig for our pig".

Our country is still pretty safe from the outbreak, it's just fun hanging out with a few people who wear flu masks to blend into the paranoia. :P At least Manny Pacquiao is perfectly safe from the virus so far. :)

Isn't it convenient when the swine flu broke out? When every was getting worried by the recession, pop comes in the swine flu, and the more convenient thing is that the symptons are like the ordinary flu!

An influenza pandemic is caused by a virus that is either entirely new or has not circulated recently and widely in the human population. This creates an almost universal vulnerability to infection. While not all people ever become infected during a pandemic, nearly all people are susceptible to infection.

So basically tl;dr: Its newness means more vulnerability and thus more panic for preparedness. Regular flu is not much because we have gotten so used to it and our vaccines are developed in time. But when something comes out of the blue, there is more panic to protect from it.
