So we haven't really had one of these threads in a few months, it seems. No specific topic, but what are 3 (or any amount, really - it's arbitrary) simple changes you'd make to the Pokémon games if you had the chance?

I need to go to bed it's kinda late I'll come up with my 3 in the morning. :/

Make XYORAS more difficult. (Mostly looking at the Exp Share and the number of Pokemon the important trainers had like the rivals and Elite 4)

The games really need to stop stopping you every time you finish a task to tell you where to go next. R/S/E was the last time you had to sort of figure out where to go next. This is especially atrocious in XYORAS.

This is a little weird but I always had the idea that TMs should have the really good moves and the moves you learn via level up (at least for weaker pokemon like non-legendaries) should be more on the crappy side. Like not complete garbage (like in Gen 1) but just not as good as the TM moves. I feel like this gives TMs way more value and it makes sense that you'd have to train Pokemon to use better moves. Especially now that TMs have infinite uses. Idk this is just more of an interesting thought I've always had.

Bonus: Introduce the Dragon Eevee in Gen 6. This was the worst combo breaker of all time.

Superbonus: Reduce the size of the main cast in the games. I thought BW was bad with three rivals, but XY just overdid it. I rather have one good rival with a good story and character development.

EDIT: Call mega evolution megamorphing. It's way less of a mouthful. I have no idea who came up with names in Gen 6. Talonflame? For real?

Multiple Save Files - This doesn't need explaining. Pretty much every modern game has more than one save file (especially on the 3DS).

Make The Games More Difficult - I feel like I've said this a million times but I really want the games to be more challenging. Although the new EXP Share is a factor in how easy the recent games have been, it's not the whole reason so I hope we get more of a challenge in Sun and Moon.

HMs Need To Go - HMs are just a real inconvenience at this point, don't get me wrong I love to use Surf and Fly in battle, but they could just become TMs and the player could receive items that deal with the things we use HMs for.

Alright I've thought of my three.
Bring back hidden grottos and make the areas more complex. I have no idea what the majority opinion on Hidden Grottos is, but I really liked them and I felt that they were indicative of a larger theme in Gen V, which was that the maps were large, often fairly complex, and had lots of hidden features and a couple secret areas to explore. These are things that Gen VI almost completely did away with.

Challenge modes, please. The games are a lot too easy as-is, and it's really not so hard to add. You could make a really simple challenge mode that just raises trainer levels by some preset factor and adjusts movesets/evolution status accordingly. I doubt it would take more than a few hours to code.

As mentioned above, give us some actual exploring to do. One of the reasons that Emerald remains my favorite game is that it doesn't shove your next destination down your throat. RSE give you an actual challenge in finding where to go, whereas their remakes totally eliminated that aspect of gameplay

Remove HMS - This is something that has bothered me for a while. I barely use any of the HMs in-battle and I just think they're unnecessary. Something else could easily replace them.

Difficulty Mode - If I had it my way, I'd make it so that each game comes with a difficulty mode similar to that of B2/W2.

Multiple Save Files - Not much to expand on this one but I'd love to have this option. It would make things so much easier when it comes to doing multiple runs for challenges ect.

Trainer customization - I think this feature should be in every main series game. It makes players stand out from each other.

Multiple save files - No explanation needed.

No more ridiculous Pokemon names - Togedemaru, Tapu Koko, Pyukumuku, and especially Type: Null come to mind here. They need proper English names. Perhaps Jangmo-o could just be named Jangmoo instead, and maybe Mr. Mime and Mime Jr. could also use different names.

Trainer Customization - As mentioned above, trainer customization is pretty important. I wish all the games included it, with a diverse range of options. Different hair styles (as in curly, frizzy, straight, etc), a more broad range of skin colors and tones, maybe even the option to be in a wheelchair, that kind of thing. I know it would be a lot to add, but I feel like it pays off in the end and let's everyone feel included.

Bicycle Availability - Honestly, the Bicycle doesn't have anything to do with becoming a Pokemon trainer so I don't see why we have to wait until 3 or 4 gyms later to finally get it. Let us have it at the beginning of the game!

Multiple Save Files - Gonna have to go with everyone else on this one, hah.

Yeah obviously there are more than just these 3, but nevertheless. c:

I completely agree with you on the first two points, the game is just too easy and holds your hand at nearly every single step you make, I found it somehow annoying because you get (in my opinion) much less freedom than early games (which don't allow you that much freedom anyway) and also, I can understand that the game is made for new players as well as olders ones but I literally get the impression that everyone think that you're some kind of retarded kid ~_~

I would change the way pokemons are spread across the region. For exemple, I found the localisations in ORAS totally awful :(

Make tutorials (like the one where some NPC shows you how to catch Pokemon) optional. The Teachy TV in FRLG could be brought back for this.

Include an optional tutorial for Pokemon-Amie. I never really figured out how to play this minigame.

Have an Emerald-style Battle Frontier, the PWT, and Pokeathelon all in one game.

More options for trainer customization. I was annoyed that it was removed entirely for ORAS.

Have an ability that surpresses Final Gambit, or at least have a Pokémon that can learn Final Gambit and Imprison through egg moves.

    Make a horde ball

Allow you to carry 10 eggs at a time and have them not take space in your Pokémon inventory.

Bring back the asshole rival archetype - I know I'm not the only one that wants this. Nothing against the friendly rivals, but that type of rival gets boring fairly quick and it would be nice if we actually had a rival that felt like a rival. Props to Barry, for even as friendly as he was, he at least remained competitive enough. We just don't have that competitiveness in rivals these days, I feel.

Ik this thread said 3 things but I wanted to put that out there.

Well I think the whole issue here is how competitive the rival is, not really their personality. Like you said, Barry was good enough because his team wasn't trash.

    • Bring back the Battle Frontier, it was far better than the Battle Maison and should never have been removed

    • Have more than one save file per game, like a lot of Nintendo games do

    • Allow the protagonist to take their hat off as part of character customization, why they are compulsory in X&Y is beyond me, especially when the protagonist is one of the only characters in the game who wears one
