    Hi Team,

    Hoping everyone is well.

I'm returning to the pokemon world after c.16 years out. My determination to play Pokémon Red on the way to work on the London underground has led to the purchase of a 3ds and I'm loving it. Obviously the next step is to play the other adventures and I'm really looking forward to it (although I don't like change and there are way to many pokemon now for someone old like me) (edit. I'm not that old).

Anyway, I've been reading up on the various generations and was sold by X/Y's being described as a game changer. That the 3d ability makes the game feel like a Zelda/Grant Theft Auto explorer game and I love this progress.

However I also note of the re-release of Ruby/the other one on 3ds as Omega/Alpha Ruby Saphire etc. And that the old beans at Nintendo HQ have upgraded these too to have that 3d adventure feel. The reviews on this seem great too.

Therefore my nooby question is, if I wanted to step into the 'best' 3d aventure to experience some updated poke-love. Which one would be best for that 3d gaming feel. XY or RubySaphire.

Hmm, tough call. I guess if the last one you've played was Red, then I'd say go with X/Y, as it would probably feel more familiar to you. I don't know how overwhelming it would be for you though, since you say that there are way too many pokémon. I think OmegaRuby/AlphaSapphire throws less at you during the main game, as it focuses mainly on pokémon introduced in Gen III, so that might be something to consider. Maybe other people could chime in with their opinions.

Welcome back to the world of Pokemon!

Personally, XY is just one of my favorite games, so I'd go with that one.

Both ORAS and XY are great games though, so you can't go wrong with either one!

Of the two, I'd say you play XY first since there's a lot of new mechanics in the games and it'd be easier to get used to them there. Plus, there's a huge variety of Pokemon you can catch in the game so you'll have a lot of teambuilding options.

ORAS are great as well, Hoenn is a pretty popular region among fans, and these remakes really helped make it relevant again with the expanded story, Pokedex being updated to include 4th Gen evolution relatives to the Hoenn-native Pokemon, and Mega Evolution written into the plot.

So, play XY first and then ORAS. XY's Pokedex has a notable number of 1st Gen Pokemon so I'm assuming you'll get accustomed to it faster than the mostly Hoenn-dominated Pokedex of ORAS.

I'll agree with the XY suggestion. There are a number of areas in XY that resemble Red structurally (e.g., one of the forests may look very familiar, even if it isn't identical), so it will be neat to see how areas you enjoyed on GameBoy can come to life in 3D. XY also cater a lot to gen I fans, with the availability of Kanto starters early on (Bulbasaur/Charmander/Squirtle), similar early route Pokemon (with some new ones thrown in), etc. XY will likely help you adapt to the new style of games while using some Pokemon and attacks that seem familiar, which may make the transition easier.

After that, I would recommend trying out ORAS, as they're great games too. If you had played RSE before, I would definitely recommend them as a starting point to see what 3D can do to the Pokemon world, but since they'll be new to you, you might as well ease in with XY and then add the extra features that come with ORAS. That way, by the time you get to ORAS, the elements that make it different from XY will see less overwhelming (because you won't be trying to learn all of the changes between Red and ORAS at once). Both games do a similarly good job with the "3D gaming feel."

    Thanks guys that's great.

Despite only knowing Red/Blue and a touch of Gold/Silver I love that these will feel like completely new games, whereby I will make mistakes along the way and have to 'earn' my crust again.

Good to know both are similar is graphical style too. I'm really looking forward to the 3d world.

Personally id say OR/AS would be the best bet, better story and more polished finish. X/Y are ok and worth experiencing but OR/AS would be my one to aim for first and then pick up X/Y later.

Just starting Pokemon Yellow on my 3DS, nostalgia trip ahoy.

Dont fret about the huge number of pokemon and the changes behind the scenes for the moment just enjoy the game as is, its really not that different overall and the new bits will come into play as and when you need to do anything with them.
