4 in custody after mentally disabled young man tied up, tortured on Facebook Live (Graphic Content)

What I find sickening is that, according to Prince of Queens, not a lot of news media is covering this event.

Fox News was covering it heavily for days, to the point we turned off the news in our house for a long while just to not see that video. So either Prince of Queens is incorrect, or it's a lot of liberal stations avoiding covering this. I'm willing to bet the random youtuber is just incorrect.

But on a slightly different note in regards to this, what do you guys think of news stations airing the torture video? I was absolutely baffled they'd do that (and was lucky I didn't happen to see it by accident), considering children watch the news and stuff like that I'd even consider not suitable for really anyone to watch.

Personally I think showing that video is an invasion of the victim's privacy.

It was available online for hours as the kidnappers tortured the victim and all of them are over 18. I think it shows others how sick people can be and serves as a sad warning to parents sbout teaching their kids about predators like this as well as being aware of where they are (especially the mentally disabled). Invasion of privacy? Sure. But the news thrives on horror like this. They regularly show panicked people after a mass shooting or people in tears after a tragedy, so to them this is no different and it's part of their shock-and-awe ways now.

It being a part of their ways doesn't make it right. It's downright cruel to make even more of a spectacle of victims or grieving family members or w/e.

I don't disagree. But the news is not informational. The media has a primary purpose of making their corporation money and the way they achieve this is through "DEATH, TERROR, and FEAR!" The only way to keep people tuning in is to have them feel fear and need to know what's happening. It's a big issue frankly.

This is the reason why I don't watch the news often.

Or even TV itself, for that matter.

You've hit the nail on the head, the news no longer exists for the purpose of information. It's become some perverse form of entertainment and manipulation but it still claims to be about the information. They basically step on all notions of journalistic ethics for the sake of earning a larger profit which not only goes against their function it's just plain wrong. A big issue is a good summary. I feel extremely sorry for the victim of this crime because he's become a whole other kind of victim as a result.

Bleh this is why I hate consumer culture.

I suppose I might as well throw my two cents in.

This has to be the most disgusting thing I've seen this year, and it's still January. Regardless of the tormentors' motives, they did that to a human being, and we all can agree that's wrong regardless of who they were.

While I do believe that racism may have been a factor (what with the Trump talk and "I hate whites" talk), this seems more leaning towards ableism. If they didn't know the kid was mentally disabled, it could be more supportive of racism, but the fact they do suggests the crime was more ableist in nature. It also seems that this is supported by the fact the kid has a history of being bullied and it has been known that, while it can happen to literally anyone, those with mental disorders and disabilities are more likely to be targeted. But hey, I'm no Sherlock, so feel free to take this with a grain of salt.

On the topic of the news, I've learned not to ever tune in the news and just rely on word of mouth on forums for major events, which in my opinion is more reliable albeit slower. Seriously, I will not put it past the news to straight up lie.

I no longer watch any news unless it's a live story (such as Trump giving a speech, a WH press conference, etc.). All my news I get off of the internet which has more coverage and less of the sensationalism.
