I only caught them for my Dex without caring about nature or IVs but a friends wants a Cresselia in his team. So I was wondering if the stats and everything are decided when the game starts or when you "look" at them (in the lake or in the island). Does anyone know? He doesn't have his game yet to check.

I can't prove it, but I think that the details of the Pokemon are determined when you encounter them in a wild battle.

For example, someone I know saw Mespirit in the cave, and when he later encountered it, it was shiny.

    It's when you look at her because I saved right on her island and set her free and chased each time to look for a shiny one.. At least I did that for Cresselia. I'm sure Mesprit would be the same too so save right before you see them. After I set Mesprit free, he was Adamant every time I encountered him in battles so he was set no matter what. ;;

Well I can't prove anything but whenever kept on reseting to get a shiny I kept on getting Adamant too so I'm not sure

Come you urber duber n00b. Do you evn know how many squr miles the poke map is (3.674 sq miles). If you knew that then you should know the orign of teh stats which is a set for every single pokeman exceppt the ultra rare oness (for simple dudes, that is when you onle see a pokeman once)... Good day killing yoursellf over the simple fact that you looook at strat guide everyday.

    was that really necessary? -reports-

It probably determines the nature when you first encounter it in a pokemon battle. Thats probably most likely but I have no proof to back it up.

wow.. i didn't realize that some members were this mean..

well, usually if i want a good legend, i soft reset when i save in front of the legendary pokemon themself. they do change when you look at them, because the soft reset option worked well for me. (just in case, soft reset is r+l+start+select on your ds)

You'll receive a warning for your rude message. Thanks for being so supportive to people who ask questions.

Erm did someone call a mod a noob? As well as getting his own information wrong? He needs more than a warning.

Back on topic, from personal experience I think the Nature/Stats are set from the second you encounter it in battle (Not when you see it on the island, but that mite be wrong) but the Ivs are, as usual, completly random until you catch it.

It'd be more logical to set it from the encounter.
You don't even get into a battle sequence when you see them..
It's like seeing the Psyduck's blocking the path; you didn't see their nat's etc. when you went up to them, did you?
I just look at it like this:
You see it and it flee's without a battle.
    Then you hunt for it.
    You eventually find it.
When you encounter it, it's like any other pokémon battle.
It operates like any other pokémon battle.
Meaning it basically is any other pokémon battle, just you encounter the same pokémon multiple times.

I am sorry. I will apolgise this instance. I AM SORRY FOR BEING A POKE MASTER!!! AND .. what I said.

I doubt it is until you catch it, since the HP and everything stays the same, I doubt it changes its HP IVs each time you find it. I could be wrong, too, though. I'm the one asking the question. D8

This means everything is just restarted every time you find it again, as if you were resetting with a normal legendary. I didn't really fully understand it.

    TwilightBlade is correct.

The nature is set when you press 'A' on it at Full Moon Island/Lake Verity Cavern. I can confirm this because I've tried SRing for both shiny Mesprit and a shiny Cresselia. All I did was Save before I pressed 'A' on them, and each time there nature, stats, and characteristics were different.

i bet its determined when you first encounter the npc sprite. Like as you are playing the game the stats and nature and slowly but surely the color is changing. because if it change when encountered in the wild the current health of the pokemon would change slightly or greatly after every encounter.Health being the only noticeable change.
