Does anyone know what this cave is for? It seems to just be a single floor empty cave

There was some event that had different Pokemon you wouldn't normally find in FRLG/Emerald appear in the cave. Stuff like Houndour, Mareep, Shuckle, etc. I'll leave this open for discussion I reckon. Anyone ever get this unlocked?

Did a little reasearch and it looks like it has something to do with going to a store with a wonder spot.

Jeez I cannot stand event pokemon. I very rarely can make the event, and then no one ever wants to trade them.

It's rumored that it was meant for an event, but I can't find any evidence that it even happened. It may as well be beta programming as far as I'm concerned because it was very likely never used at all but the data is still there. I'm pretty sure that there are action replay codes somewhere that let you modify the wild Pokemon encounters in the cave.

I googled it while back, and found out that it supposedly can change the gender of your pokemon, but there's something you have to do...

That sounds a bit to fishy to me, why would a cave change the gender of your Pokemon for?

Change the gender of your pokemon? I've never heard of this cave. Sounds interesting >_>

The information you found is incorrect. It does not change the gender of your Pokémon.

To clarify: Altering Cave was supposed to make use of the Wireless Adapter for FRLG and Emerald. You would go to a wonder spot (in real life) and use Mystery Gift to download the wireless distribution which would change which Pokémon appeared in the cave. There really wasn't anything special about these Pokémon, which is probably why they never did an event for them.

Yeah...and in Emerald they could all be found in-game anyway. Although Smeargle was in Battle Frontier, the others were in the Safari Zone extension.

But yes, the Wonder Spot method is what it was all about, not some gender-bending Distortion World.

But what I don't understand is...did it ever happen? Or is it like the Lock Capsule and whatever that unused item in Hg/Ss was, just never used?

And was it just never used, or is it like that special Scizor, Manaphy etc. that the Japanese got yet the rest of us didn't?

That would suck if that were true. Ah well. Seems the only thing that really sets Altering Cave apart anymore is that it uses the Mt. Moon theme from Fr/Lg in Emerald. :( (Sure wish there was something else that could set the event off besides unused or unavailable wonder spots or cheating devices.)

I never got to go to events as a kid, and I always figured Altering Cave was a wonderland with dozens of amazing Pokemon, provided you went to some event. It's kind of weird finding out that it wasn't anything special for anyone else either, since there was no real event.

Actually, there were E-Reader cards that changed the Pokemon in it, but they were only released in Japan.

I don't see the point of altering cave if there was nothing special with it unless you went to some place where you could probably never go in a long time...

You can go the Altering Cave right now in Leaf Green, Fire Red, and Emerald. You don't have to go to any event to just go to it.

Well, technically, yeah, but I still agree Nintendo should have just made it an event or something. Hardly anyone - whether in Japan or the U.S. - owned an e-Reader, or even knew anyone who did.

The Altering Cave's purpose was a Nintendo Event perhaps.
Maybe some answers would be stated in Nintendo forums.
But all i see there are Zubat-gasm.

Zubat is nothing special. You can find it in almost any plain old cave. That's why I said it's pointless.
