Anthem - Discussion Thread

I'll be interested when we get a gameplay trailer that doesn't include any bullshit role-playing.

If you have to include that in a trailer then it shows a lack of confidence in the product you've created. If the developer isn't confident that the game they've created will hold my attention why should I be?
 
I think it looks great! The Ubisoft tactical chatter is turning into an annoying trend, but other than that it looks interesting! Especially since this is developed by the main branch bioware instead of that sub-studio that did ME: A makes me excited!

In a nutshell it's just a way of making the game feel a lot more alive and dynamic than it really is that isn't really that representative of the game itself.

I can get on board with that. Everyone has different play styles, and it's hard to get a good feel of the ambience or immersion of the game when everything is planned and set up as it was in this video. However, at the same time I understand the purpose of simulating the engagement as you only have x amount of time to show off your game at a huge conference like this where what you show could make or break you, so taking things slow and showing off specifically what you want gamers can see is probably a good thing.

Plus, there's a good chance this game is an unfinished product so you really don't want to show off bugs or glitches on such a huge stage for the same reasons as above. Nonetheless, it does create a one-dimensional showing of whatever it is your showing when role-playing is involved.

Then why not just show off some of the more impressive areas of the game without having scripted role-playing in the trailer? There's no need for it unless, for whatever reason, you don't believe that your game can be engaging on its own. Writing a script and planning out these events would have actually taken longer than just showing the player the areas in the game and talking about them.

They're probably taking their sweet time cause they want to show the "power" of the Xbox One X. If it was going in fast paced real time, it most likely wouldnt have allowed the audience to quote unquote "soak in the atmosphere" if it went lightning fast like how a normal gamer would play the game. Plus, instead of jumping from different area to different area, by keeping it a scripted, one shot (for the most part) section, you can display the minimalized loading times (or nonexistent ones for that matter) which makes it more impressive.

As for the commentary, would you rather have them just play the game without any commentary? Just trying to understand where you are coming from.

Commentary is fine: It helps the player understand the game and its mechanics a lot better than showing gameplay itself. I only take issue with the inclusion of scripted voice acting in the trailer.

Do you have any examples of games where the trailer when unveiled paralleled what's Anthem did but fell flat when it came to engagement?

I don't know, I guess I really don't see the difference between scripted voice acting and commentary. Seems me like they could be the same thing.
