Well, my old Wedding Gift team was quite a shock to the ladder. In the rare time I was on, I won about 80% of my matches. Not so bad, isn't it?
Anyways, I recently got into the CAP project in Smogon, and was helping to playtest their new creation. Steels were one of the most common things to find on the server, so I started running a team with a NP Azelf and the CAP. The Azelf ended up blowing through almost every team on the CAP server. I decided to take Azelf and move him to actual competitive battling, and see how he worked out.
This team's strategy is simple- Metagross slams through a lot of things early game, weakening them to KO range for either Stealth Rock or Azelf. Azelf can come in late game then and tear through the majority of teams. To make it easier for Azelf to rampage, I added in Pokemon that can tear through Gyarados, Tyranitar, and other Major threats to Azelf.
Time to get on to the team. Hope you guys enjoy having fun! (Oh yeah, I got used to writing a lot more about my teams in Smogon, so try to bear with me a little pl0x. Also, I'm not one who usually makes cool-looking RMTs).
Aerodactyl @ Focus Sash
Jolly Nature
252 Atk/ 252 Spe/ 6 HP
Taunt
Rock Slide
Earthquake
Stealth Rock
Just your everyday, standard Suicide Lead Aero. This guy is my favorite lead becuase how consistently he gets Stealth Rock. Forget TrickScarfing, MM and Bullet Punch Metagross, and Heatran. Aerodactyl never fails against these guys getting Stealth Rock up. The only time I fail to get Rocks up is when I lose a Speed Tie to other Aerodactyl. Aerodactyl also comes in later if he's still alive as death fodder.
Metagross @ Choice Band
Adamant Nature
252 Atk/ 252 HP/ 6 Def
Meteor Mash
Bullet Punch
Earthquake
Explosion
Metagross tears through a lot of Pokemon with STAB CB Meteor Mash, able to 2HKO Gyarados with SR. The Attack boost is also welcome. THe main question mark here is the other moves bar Explosion, and the EVs. I just picked some generic EVs off Smogon, and ran the CB moveslot I used to run. Any advice there would be helpful.
Metagross mainly weakens things than to KO range or KO's them himself using Meteor Mash.
Slowbro @ Choice Specs
Modest Nature
252 HP/ 252 SPa/ 6 Def
Surf
Flamethrower
Grass Knot
Ice Beam
This is the first Slowbro I've run in OU. I mainly put him on the team as my primary answer to Swampert, and his ability to take hits very well. Flamethrower hits Scizor switch-ins, Grass Knot takes down Swampert, and Ice Beam hits the Dragons. I am consdiering HP Electric for Gyarados, since this is my best answer to Gyara.
Infernape @Choice Scarf
Naive Nature
252 Spa/ 192 Spe/ 64 Atk
Close Combat
Overheat
HP Ice
U-Turn
If you've known me for a while, you'll be shocked I'm running 3 Choice Users on the same team. Each of them does have their vital roles, however. Infernape's is revenge killing and scouting. Overheat tears through Scizor and Metagross, Close Combat smites Tyranitar and Heatran to the Ground, U-Turn leaves a dent in Latias, and serves a scouting purpose, and Hidden Power Ice rips into Gliscor, Salamence, and Flygon.
Lucario @ Life Orb
Adamant Nature
252 Atk/ 252 Spe/ 6 HP
Close Combat
Extremespeed
Crunch
Swords Dance
I needed something fast that could dispatch of Ghosts for Azelf. Lucario came to mind, and SD Luke was put on this team. Lucario also serves as a secondary late-game sweeper if I'm forced to show Azelf early game. This is a pretty standard moveset and EVs, so not much explaining is needed here.
Azelf @ Life Orb
Timid Nature
252 SPa/ 252 Spe/ 6 HP
Nasty Plot
Psychic
Flamethrower
Energy Ball
I ran this exact Azelf on the CAP server, where it was a terror. I brought it to Smogon, and it continued on somewhat of the same streak. The main reason why is that Azelf has a base 125 Special attack, which is almost as high as Gengar's. Psychic can OHKO Salamence without a NP with Stealth Rock, just to show how powerful this little dude is. (no wonder D_A destroys everyone) Flamethrower tears through Steels who wish to kill me off. Energy Ball 2HKOes Swampert, and is here instead of Grass Knot to smack Vaporeon hard.
Well, there is the team. Major threats so far? Status can be annoying, but that is the case with most offensive teams. Gyarados can leave a dent in the majority of my team, which is why I'm thinking of T-Punch on Meta or HP Electric on Slowbroski. Other than that, I haven't found much trouble with any other Pokemon. Of course, there is always several blind spots I miss... which is why you're reading this, and about to click the "Post Reply" button, no? Have fun rating!
