Do you think that any of Ash's other Pokémon than Pikachu, including the ones in his current party, at Professor Oak's Laboratory and in training will have to be or were already retired from the anime? Why or why not?

There's an easy excuse as to why he never uses those Pokemon again after their regional saga ends. The anime has to promote the current generation games and the Pokemon introduced in that generation, which is why Ash and most of the main cast has to catch them.

Yet you forget about Battle Frontier and Charizard returning for the tail end of Best Wishes. It's true though that the old Pokemon deserve to be seen again but as Hikamaru mentioned, current region/saga determines what Pokemon get caught/used. I'd love to see Butterfree again but it's as likely to happen as Greninja returning to Ash's side.

I don't think Ash is going to "retire" any more Pokemon. Except his current party when he Professor Oaks them at the end of Alola saga.
