I think like in some places having open (and public) mod postings and such could help. Like lets say the RP section, people generally want a mod who is reasonable and on a few times a week so as to approve RP threads. However it would be up to the deciders to weed out the popularity that might be garnered from 1 application from a favourite member. After all, the mods are trying to chose the best choice, not the most popular.
Plus it helps to have a descent handle on how RPs work and to differentiate between good and bad ones.
I'd apply to the RP though and would do so in a professional but fun manner. One thing people don't realise that a good quality in modership is, is taking out the emotion. In that way, it sometimes is best if moderating is earned so as the mod picking team can discern who would be the most level headed. Of course an open system would diminish the amount of potential applicants. And yay for post history.
