So are lyrics in music you listen important to you?
If you're Lady Gaga fan, well then I pretty much now the answer, but give us your impression anyway!

As for me, it's definitly the most, that's right the most, important thing in a song! Sure music is extremly important, especcially cause I play an instrument, but I doubt I could listen to music that has Lady Gaga, or Katy Perry's lyrics!

I agree, lyrics are important to me. However, in saying that, I like completely random songs, but also songs that have a meaning (my most recent song like is by Madness (no surprise to those who know me), called Mrs. Hutchinson, which criticises our NHS due to them treating everything with medication, without actually studying the symptoms too carefully (this was in the 80s, I guess), and I just love the lyrics of it, and the music was happy, but the lyrics told a different tale)

Lyrics are important in any song. If it has crappy lyrics, a nice tune, but sounds like total crap, then there's a chance I won't listen to the song. But when I listen to some Japanese songs, or any other song which has a different language, I tend to give more importance to other things in the song. I also like the instrumentals and beats in a song. So, it depends on the mixture of all the components really.

No, they aren't important. Something with quotable lyrics is always fun, but the music is the main reason I listen, not words.

While lyrics are important and fun to quote and I'm very fond of overly epic ones, they're not everything. I'd rather listen to good music with bad lyrics than bad music with good lyrics.

They are important to me. I like the songs I listen to have a good meaning within it. If the lyrics are really random, then the song probably won't appeal to me.

lyrics can make an impression but aren't always the power source of a song. i listen to plenty of artists who manage to draw emotions from sound alone while plenty of artists (the singers op mentioned would be examples) incorporate bland lyrics into tasteless sounds and leave no significant resonance with me. but some music appeals to me and some doesnt for all kinds of different reasons, lyrics aren't everything for me

Lyrics and beat/music are equally important.

You can't have a truly good song without both.

Lyrics are definitely important to me. Although it's mainly the music, lyrics can add so much more to a song if they're good. Especially the slightly abstract lyrics, because you tend to relate to them more. However, lyrics can turn me off an artist completely. There's this singer called Eliza Doolittle, and I really liked one of her songs and I was going to get her album, then I heard what one of her other songs was about and it really didn't strike a chord with me and I chose not to listen to her. So lyrics can be good or bad, but either way they're usually important.

They are important to me, but not the most important thing.

It's fine if they aren't that great, so long as the music and stuff is good.

I seperate what I like in music and what I like in lyrics. I can appreciate music regardless of lyrics, The Mars Volta (my favourite band) have mainly non-sensical lyrics, but I cast it aside because I like the music they make so much. I also listen to a fair amount of instrumental music.

I can enjoy good music with bad/no lyrics, I rarely enjoy bad music with good lyrics. So while I do enjoy reading good lyrics a lot, they're not overtly important to me. It can help make me like a band a lot more though, accompanying good music with good lyrics is more of a bonus than a necessity. However if they write a lyrical masterpiece I will likely enjoy it, even if the music isn't that great, because I'll be listening to it just to hear the words rather than concentrating on the music.

tl;dr, I think music and lyrics are two seperate things and I usually only concentrate on one.

I would like to say "NO". Lyrics are not important!!

Lyrics are quite important to me. The Man in Black(Johnny Cash), Red-Headed Stranger(Willie Nelson), Okie from Muskogee(Merle Haggard), Rhinestone Cowboy(DAC), etc. still touch my heart with some of their amazing songs.

And most of those singers sing songs that may not have the best music, but the lyrics are very nice.

Depends on the song. These are the ones that I like the lyrics the most to:

Linkin Park - The Little Things Give You Away
-About Hurricane Katrina and Bush's slow response to it

    Audioslave - Be Yourself
    -The title says it all

    Shinedown - What A Shame
-"What a shame that we're not all the same..." I love sarcastic lyrics...

Of course they are. Lyrics are the ones who dictates the meaning of the song.

Depends, really. I listen to alot of rap, which is obviously the most lyrical genre out there (and I'm sure you people with a huge hate on for rap are gonna sh*t a brick at that). So naturally the lyrics need to be deep and/or cunning. That's what separates good hip hop from songs on the radio bad hip hop.

But pretty much any other genre I don't overly care. I mean yeah, it's a bonus if it's got good lyrics but I'm more focused on the actual music than the words.
