Are we ever safe?

Wow good topic.
I would say here in the UK we are safe from natural disaters e.g earthquakes.
But they can still happen.
But at the moment anything can happen.
Like in all the news now everyone have been stabbing everyone because of bulling and threating. We live in a dangerous world.

Actually, you get unhealthy by reading all these posts above. You could die 1 second after reading this. I could die 1 second after writing this. Nothing is for sure. But at lest you've lived.

I live near the Twin Cities in Minnesota and I hear of shootings all the time its getting worse and worse. But don't you think that the world is just getting too paranoid? I mean yes a loved one may get cancer or something...
or a tornado may ruin your house...
or a huricane could destroy your hometown...
or a wild fire could burn up your billion dollar mansion...
or a terrorist could blow up a bomb killing massive amounts of people...
or China could build a massive army and take over the world...
or we could run out of gas and the stock market could crash and the world would go through another depression...
or aliens could blow up the earth making way for a new highway saying you should have listened to the dolphins...(Hitchhikers)...
or the Sun could blow up and we would either burn to death or freeze to death within a second...
or a comet could crash into the Earth causing major Tsunamis wiping out most of Japan...
or maybe the Ancient Myians were right...maybe the angry fire demons will wipe out mankind in the year 2012...

Who am I kidding...RUN FOR YOUR LIVES...lol (note I was gonna try and post something inteligent but I got carried away...this works to.)

Enjoy life while you can. Life's too short.

HIV is horrible...And AIDs...even worse.
Not to sound like a total dummy but I always thought HIV and AIDs were the same thing
On topic: We were never completely safe and may never be. I live in the lowlands and if the ocean level rises too much I can say goodbye to my house. And about the nuclear explosions and world disasters happening. If it could've happened, dont you think it would've happened by now?
And one more thing: be glad you dont live in Africa, especially that area where children say being raped is something that's a part of everyday life.
Just be thankful you live in a civilized country (assuming you do since you're on the internet) and just pray to God, Buddha, Misty or whoever you worship.

HIV and AIDS are sort of the same thing. The virus turns into a syndrome after taking full effect.

Africa is also where HIV/AIDS are most common. Just don't have unprotected sexual relationships and hopefully you won't get it.

Correction: Don't have extensively polygamous unpotected sex with people you donn't know whether or not they are infected. Unprotected sex is, after all, the easiest method of human reproduction, which we, as a species, kinda need.

And I was wondering how long it would be until someone brought up this quote, so I guess I will.

"When I hear somebody sigh, 'Life is hard,' I am always tempted to ask, 'Compared to what?'" ~Sydney J. Harris

Life is hard and there's nothing we can do about it.

Au contraire. There's pleanty to be done about it. There are many threats in life, but so many things to delight in as well. Scared of what might happen to you? Then you fail to enjoy your life, truly live it. Life is a precious gift, something to be treasured and used, not tucked away for fear of harming it.

It's a matter of changing your thinking. The media assaults us with all of the possibilities and numbs us to what is. Try, for ten minutes, being perfectly and totally aware of yourself, your actions, and what is around you. It's a liberating and truly wonderful experience, not to think while drinking water, but to truly drink.

Its not always that easy to go through. I've had depression before and it stinks. Yes, there is help, but they just don't say "Well congragulations! You're officially a sad person! Have Prozac!". I wish it was that way though.

Don't talk to me about depression. I never said that doing that was easy. It is, however, immensely helpful. You think I don't know what it's like?! That somehow, I'm immune to those things? I wish.

Actually, I take that back... I don't. I'm glad I've gone through those things, that I still do. Every time it provides me with a new way to think, to feel, to consider myself and my relationships with others. Ultimately, it draws me closer to those I care about and makes me a better person. Every time, I draw closer to God as well. It makes the enjoyable times all the more so too. Life happens, and that includes good as well as bad. The world isn't out to get you, and it's not a horrible place.

Well, eva since 9/11 ive been scared. eva since the London bombinings ive been petrified. Lucky I live in a small town in Australia which dosen't have murderers(or not many anyway) and has nothing worth blowing up, so I think im safe. But Natrual Disasters amaze and terrify me at the same time. Around 20 years ago the biggest earthquake in Austrlian histroy hit my town and 6 people died, so im no were near safe... But safer than Sydneysiders at least

I personally have to agree with ~Ozy~. I've had one of the hardest lives I know. There are only a few people around me that I know who have been through more. And I support them in everything they do.

I've been clinically depressed. I've been anorexic. I've been suicidle. I've cut myself to relieve pain, stress, and guilt. I've been sexually abused by five seperate people throughout my life. My family life is always hanging by a thread. My grandmother only recently passed away. I live a thousand miles away from the one I love. My father may not be supporting my decisions in college any longer.

But have I let that control my life?

Have I adopted a "life sucks" attitude?

No.

In fact, most people see me as a person who has a bright outlook on life. I've turned all these bad things in my life into something good by learning from them. Floods, hurricanes, tsunamis, AIDs... Yes, they are horrible, but instead of whining about them, I help. My church sets up school bags and fun bags for needy children all over the world. I'm an animal rights advocate. I'm pro-life. I teach Sunday School.

I work to make life better for all.

And my trials have only made me further realize that life is precious. Because of the people that have hurt me, I appreciate those who love me all the more. Because of my close calls with death, I better life and love it more.

Don't try to tell me that life just sucks and the world is out to get us all.

Because it's not.

God, call Him by whatever name you will under whatever faith you will, protects and loves us all. The trials he faces us with are only to challenge us and better us in the long run.

Try that outlook for a change.

What if you're an atheist?

It's hilarious how some certain people rant on with a few good points here and there, before they inevitably pull the RELIGIOUS ROPE. Why don't we keep all of that inane jargon out of here? If you're afraid of going to hell, I'm sure there's a time and place for it (at your local church). Watch this turn into another religious debacle that nobody else really gives half a **** about.

* sarcasm, for those who figured that I was being serious.

If you're scared of earthquakes, hurricanes, and whatever else in America, there's many other places you could move to that has little if none of these said natural disasters. It's your choice for whenever you decide to get the hell out of there, otherwise face the consequences, and don't complain about natural disasters wrecking havoc on your life in your country.

Our planet is not for the weak-hearted, which I fully agree with; it's survival of the bloody fittest.

Then that is your personal choice. It doesn't mean that you cannot try to do the same things, be a good person on the whole instead of being sure of how horrible the world is.

EDIT: Why do people assume that whenever religion is brought up, one of the cheastbeating Jesus-freaks is going to jump down another's throat over being atheist, Jewish, Taoist, whatever. I also fail to see why bringing up God, faith in Him or whatever immediately destroys someone's credibility. This is, at the moment, an open forum and people are free to express their faith. Church (or its equivalent) is not the only place that anyone, of any faith can express that. Do not assume that every Christian is going to preach to you. We're not. In turn, don't ask us to keep quiet about our own faith when it comes up in a discussion.

As for your other points, I wholeheartedly disagree. Compassion is the dividing human factor and part of what seperates human sentience from animalistic sentience. Furthermore, Social Darwinism is a misinterpertation of Darwinist theory and fatally flawed as a social system. This is because it denies fundamental human nature, that to rise above the natural order. Social Darwinism, which you suggest, is contrary to rational thought.

I am not, thus, do not have that problem. If you are, my apologies. I am not forcing a religious view on anyone, merely stating what helps get me through. If it doesn't get you through, settle for making the world a better place of your own accord and not by what a God dictates. Either way, you're making a difference.

Thank you for that, by the way. Again, I was NOT attempting to turn this into a religious debate. My religious views are my own. I was not pulling any "religious rope". And it is not "inane jargone". I am not "afraid of gonig to hell". I was merely saying what helps get me through the tough times, as it helps get many other people through tough times.

And thank you for swearing. That's exactly what everyone loves to hear.

Make life as good as you can for whatever reason you use for yourself. That's all that can be done. Have a positive outlook.

If I am interpreting your post correctly, you are saying that I am a religious person. I'm not, I'm an atheist.

If you were talking to Nagayoka, nevermind.

Whether you're Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, Jewish, Christian or atheist, there is always a way to deal with your problems. I had a hard time dealing with depression, thoughts of death, and much more. I'm currently on Prozac and it takes a month to get full effect. Though my problem isn't really my fault, considering its neurological.

Couldn't agree more :] Life is what you make of it. If you sit around saying "oh I'm depressed" guess what? You're going to be depressed. Go out and make something of your life instead. You can let depression overtake you, but you can also train your mind to ignore those things and focus on something brighter. I've done it myself. o_o I was on antidepressants for a long time. Then one day it was just like "... why?" I stopped taking them, and decided to be in control of my life. It's completely possible, so don't use that as an excuse.

I think depression is half neurological and half mental <_< "Mental" referring to willpower.
