Art or Music?

Okay, so my school offers this early college program. I'm applying for the Visual and Performing Arts Center(VPAC). I can either do art/photography or go into music. I love both, I just don't know what do to. I love my chorus teacher(her students audition for American Idol, America's Got Talent, and one of them sang a song Carrie Underwood was supposed to sing.) If I were to do art, I would either persue painting or photography. If it were music, I would either persue playing guitar or singing(or both).

Help? What would you do in my situation?

    music is art

Really, I'd pick music. Painters/illustrators don't have to have technical skill if they intend to just sell they're work (see folk art), whereas musicians can hardly be successful if they don't know how to play any instruments or sing "properly." But try to pick what skill you're most confident with and run with it. If you end up not happy with your choice, take a different course later, that's always an option.

Like you, I too have a strong feeling for art and music. However, after much consideration I decided to follow up on music over art. As it is true you can express yourself more in art, music does not restrict you from doing the same thing. Really, if it is something you like you can think of it on futuristic terms and choose depending on which may be better suited for you in the future and which can keep you going as things tend to get harder as we grow older.

Music is highly popular today and compared to art you have a better chance at being more recognized and becoming something big. Not to say art isn't something special as well, but if you think you can do something more in music then go for it. It's a decision of choice and whichever you fit better in and want to progress farther in is what you should go with.

Luckily, nothing stops you from doing the other on the side while you put the other choice first. So you can still have the joy of doing the two things you like and it's something I keep up with as well.

    I'd go for music, personally.

I don't know much about any of this stuff, but I imagine that if you take the music route you're going to get a lot of theory and practice time with teachers or other professionals. If you take visual arts route you'll probably still have that, but you'll also get access to facilities like darkrooms. So it seems to me that you can either get a good foundation that you can build from with the music path, or access to materials you wouldn't normally be able to get with the art path. I dunno which is better for you. To me, music is something you can do on your own whenever, wherever, and art is more of a one time chance so I'd go with art.

If you know what you're doing, why not have both? Merging Art and Music together can be the coolest thing ever, or it can really suck, depending on how you do it.

It's an art of itself hurhur

If I had to pick one, I'd go with art. You can be self taught with both but I'm better with my "artistic" abilities (even though music is art lawls)

I think this is one of those, "Go with what your heart tells you." As cliché as that may sound if you like both as much as the other one you just have to go with the one that seems right.

If that doesn't help then I would say pick the one which you're better at. If you can sing or play music really well then go take the music class. If your a better photographer or painter then take the art class.

Additionally, I feel like art would open you up to more career choices. (If that's what your going for.) Being a photographer means you could work for a magazine or send in pictures for newspapers, websites, etc. If you took the painting route you could work in city mural projects or really anywhere that needs a design. If you took the more technical route you could get into computer arts and that branches off into so many choices.

I would go with art it is a lot more fun to me.

I would personally go with (and i am going with) art. I feel i can be much more creative with art than music, not to mention i suck at art. Academically, i think an art degree is more valued than a music one, but don't quote me on that. Just go with whatever you feel you can get more out of, whether it be academically or in terms of enjoying it.

Personally, I'd go for Music, cause I've always wanted to play an instrument, either the Bass Guitar or the Drums. But Art isn't so bad. I hate it, but it's only because I can't draw and that incident a while ago where I threw yellow paint at my teacher's face my accident. ^_^ My friend's love art though. :P
