Who's Rei? I think I've heard of her, but the name is relatively unfamiliar.

Rei Ayanami, pilot of Evangelion Unit 00, clone of Yui Ikari, emotionless girl with a bleeding eye problem, object of my affections, et cetera.

Is that pic of Rei from an actual episode? That's definatly the first time I've ever saw her smile like that.^_^

Well, my mom got the printer back up and running and finally got more ink and paper for it.

Of course, I know i'll always admire..........

Really beautiful pic of her.<3

Oh, I remember you talking about this, thanks for posting it...a flower really seems to amplify her beauty, especially the daffodil; I know I've said this before, but I'm still rather surprised what kind of effect it had.

XD I like Asuka better.

This Eva manga I have says Rei was designed to be "that girl every guy secretly desires." I didn't understand that. Perhaps her quiet/loyal/beautiful/lone trait combination was made guys hopeful or something.... oO; Whatever the case is, I'd much rather watch Asuka. I don't remember a single scene with her that wasn't exciting or funny. XD Besides, German and red hair. <3333 lol.

Unfortunately I've only ever read the first volume of the Eva manga; it makes me wonder if the premise is actually changed to the point of Rei not being entirely (or at all) made from Yui Ikari o_o; Well, whatever they did to her, it captured my heart as well. Of course, Asuka's aggressive and extroverted nature suit me just fine, but...Rei just edges her out somehow. I think it's because of the delicate subtlety of the emotion she expresses; many people mistake her for emotionless, and I commonly refer to her as such to save time, but there's just a depth there that I don't see as much in Asuka, despite her horribly painful past.

To each his own; I'm also more of a Ritsuko Akagi person than a Misato Katsuragi person; go figure XD

Asuka hides too much of herself, but she's still a genius being able to graduated from university by age 14 and all. XD Rei is definately not emotionless. You can notice it when she slaps Shinji and when she finally breaks down in tears. She's insanely courageous, but not emotionless.

Ritsuko and Misato are just dunkard adults to me, I haven't thought much of them. :P

Nobody would withold a diploma from a girl that violent if she demanded it XD

Yes, her selflessness based in the feeling that her life is a mistake and that she is just a tool (which, unfortunately, is true, at least to Gendo) takes precedence over any natural emotion she may have; such a dramatic change in personality would happen to anyone who felt they had so little (or such a singular and grim) purpose in life x_x

At least Ritsuko can add programming to the Magi faster than an angel can XD I get a feeling that she's just a casual drinker, while Misato is an unabashed lush XD

Misato's definately beer obessessed. XD

The sort of selflessness you described, I felt it before when I was a kid and knew nothing but what my parents or society said... but I don't think that was the case with Rei as she's 14 already. Frankly, I've never ever felt the purpose of my life, so I'm not sure what that has to do with it. I thought Rei was ultimately walking down a narrow but successful path. Not sure why Masato vews her as "unadept at living".

...because she never shows her emotions, not because she's ashamed of them, but because she doesn't know what they are. Emotions enrich life so much once you acknowledge what they are... A lesson I've learned personally :|

and her eyes aren't bleeding, red is her natural eye color. I read in a manga that the makers of Eva did that to give her stare more depth.

I think feeling that selflessness at least once is a necessary part of growing up; it's healthy for one to feel that they have no purpose as long as they aspire to find one, (though simply not finding one's purpose, as you said is your case, is far different than feeling one has no purpose. The latter is a self-defeating notion.) I would not confuse her devotion to Gendo and to Unit 00 with having a purpose, though; one can serve, be loyal, and feel a sense of devotion while still feeling there is no valid reason for their existance; this type of self-abandon can even cause devotion to be stronger if it is singleminded, and Rei feels for the majority of the series that Gendo was the only one who ever showed concern for her life (though, in reality, she knew at the same time how little value NERV as a whole placed on her, as she was widely known to be one of many Reis and, in their opinion, expendable.) The age issue seems to have little to do it because, as you hinted to, purpose is based on one's social interaction, not one's age alone, and, as Rei is completely withdrawn, she tends to delve very deeply into introspection and some facet or another of the existential quandary is always looping in her mind, so anything she discovers of purpose (or lack thereof) is generated by her own complicated thought process. You must also consider that there have been three Reis in the fourteen years of her life; twice she has had to begin life again, programmed with a select few memories and emotions, given less nature and less time to develop than a normal child. These factors combine to create a person who simply cannot connect with the outside world because of a complete disconnect from natural humans and society as a whole; she is not content in her work, per se, but it is all she knows and all she feels she exists for, so she is dutiful to the exclusion of everything that is not required of her. That's why I can completely understand when Misato called her "unadept at living."

Regarding her being successful, she (Rei II, the only Rei in my opinion), died a senseless death against an angel that had the power to challenge her perceptions of reality and of herself; all that was gained since she met Shinji was lost, and, as the final insult to the beautiful person that was budding inside of her, her death was covered up and she was immediately replaced with Rei III.

Sorry for essaying, it's what I do sometimes XD

I get it. Rei I was killed by Dr. Akagi, Rei II was through most of the series, and Rei III is the last Rei, while getting Rei I (and later, II)'s soul, lost its memories of Shinji. I never even noticed that. i get completely the main story, but I guess I missed that sub-plot.

That explains why Dr. Akagi was assassinated. Since she killed Rei I, she could not be allowed to discover the Rei clones, or she'd kill them, too. Much like her daughter did eventually anyhow.

Actually, Ritsuko's mother committed suicide after killing Rei I, as far as I know x_x

But yes, what you said about the Rei I-III subplot is correct; Rei Ayanami's soul is transferred from Rei to Rei as far as I know, because the dummy plug Reis were all described as being soulless, I believe. The function of Rei's soul is only to retain the physical and personality instincts that made her a viable Eva pilot, unfortunately.

yup.

Rei I was killed my Ritsuko's mother.
Rei II sacrificed herself to kill an Angel.
And Rei III was dressed up in bandages to look like the same Rei, but lost all memory of herself before in the soul transfer.

!!!

I can play Rei III on piano. ;_; [/random, feeble attempt on joining conversation, inevitably failing~]

It's a good song. o.o;

I'll be quiet now. .-.
